Reader’s Choice – Favorite Anime 2006

The end of the year is always a good time to reflect on what we’ve seen these past four or so seasons. I’m still in the process of writing up my opinions on the Best of Anime 2006, but I was wondering what everyone else thought. And so, listed below are 99 series that aired in the year 2006 (plus “Other” at the very bottom to make an even 100). I have my suspicions on how people will vote, but I’m very curious to see how this really turns out. Choose your favorite and the winner will get included in next week’s post!

Disclaimer – The methodology that I chose was to include series that:

  • Started in Fall of 2005 but aired the majority of its episodes in 2006. Examples: Mai-Otome, Blood+.
  • Started in Winter, Spring, or Summer of 2006.
  • Started in Fall of 2006 and aired the majority of its episodes in 2006. Examples: Soukou no Strain counts because it airs the majority of its episodes in 2006, even if it doesn’t completely finish until February because of large breaks. However, CODE GEASS does not count because it will have only aired 11 episodes by the end of this year. GEASS fans will have to wait for the second poll coming later this week on favorite Fall 2006 series.
  • Even with these requirements, there were still a few minor/kiddie/unpopular shows that I didn’t include. If for some reason you felt that Sasami Mahou Shoujo Club was the best series this year, then you can always vote under “Other.”

Note: This poll will close Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 at 11:59 PM.

The poll is now closed. Official tallies will be announced soon.

      Suzumiya haruhi for me.

I based my favorites on how well an anime ended. Since, it is such a rarity for Japanese animation to have good endings.

    • December 18, 2006 at 12:11 pmBladewind

Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru got my vote. Its a surprise hit for me, as I usually pass up on this genre. This anime is a reverse Ouran (also better written than Negima), so fans of both series should check out this sleeper hit :p

    • December 18, 2006 at 12:25 pmrandom passerby

      Haruhi for great justice!

    • December 18, 2006 at 12:27 pmMaiku

that’s the sound I made when I went through the ‘Haruhi’ line.
Of course Haruhi will win! >,

    • December 18, 2006 at 12:30 pmMaiku

god dmn it! I do that everytime! that > opposite cancels my messege!!!

anyway, I wanted to say that I wanted to vote for haruhi as well, but so many others did. so personally I voted for Canvas2, because nobody will vote for it… and it’s a really good anime.
only for episodes 3 and 5 I would’ve watch the whole series again! ^^

    • December 18, 2006 at 1:11 pmyoh

haruhi! i didn’t like it much

    • December 18, 2006 at 1:14 pmOtanga

Ouran High School Host Club GO!!!

    • December 18, 2006 at 1:18 pmRai

Lots of great ones this year but I love Ouran the best

    • December 18, 2006 at 1:41 pmsandalHat

      *votes for Ouran*

I’ve still yet to see Honey & Clover II… :(

    • December 18, 2006 at 1:42 pmcleanwater

omg hard to choose….. Shakugan no Shana vs Fate Stay Night?? Also Ouran highschool club vs Zero no Tsukaima… hmm… Ugh can’t decide

    • December 18, 2006 at 1:46 pmcleanwater

i guess ill vote for Fate Stay night to bump it up. Too bad i couldn’t vote for more than one=[. Besides whats so good about Suzumiya Haruhi? I admit it is a good anime but seriously was it THE BEST?

    • December 18, 2006 at 2:00 pmCgreedy

Suzumiya Haruhi was hands down the best show for me with Mushishi & Honey and Clover at close second. Runner ups would be Higurashi,Ouran,Black Lagoon, and Gintama.

    • December 18, 2006 at 2:07 pmtensai_otaku

I don´t like this kind of a pool because there´s alot of genres here!!you should create pools like this:
      school kids
      harem –
      echii – H
best show for kids – hey OMNI SASAMI could be here :D
      fantasy – FATE….etc
best remake – LIKE KANON for example!!
Best game anime – LIKE DISGAEA :D
Originality – like ( Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu ) or (Yomigaeru Sora – Rescue Wing)
and the list goes on…..Sorry i am not going to vote because i liked too many of these ones at the same degree!!And I am convicted that there was too many good ones among them!!
Best classic anime – Ah! My Goddess – Sorezore no Tsubasa :D
I am an old otaku (30) and with my experience on animes i´d tell you that this year we had a very nice competition!!
PS: the ones i´ve posted on this topic are just for reference….because I HAVE AN OPINION BUT IT´S NOT POSTED HERE ;)

    • December 18, 2006 at 2:40 pmLulu chan

Aw tough choice,i would rather not vote or choose. Because half of the animes from the list are my favourite! :D

    • December 18, 2006 at 3:13 pmarcanes

GUYS!!!! check out http://asosbrigade.com/ (news about Haruhi)
      what do you think?

    • December 18, 2006 at 3:29 pmrobot

it would be Ouran High School

    • December 18, 2006 at 3:41 pmloplop

I’m probably the only person who will say Canvas2, I enjoyed it to the point of buying the R2 disks since it will most likely never be released in the U.S. on R1 . . . .

    • December 18, 2006 at 4:13 pmhananon

the best show for 2005-2006 that makes me go AooH is Noein, I didn’t feel this stupendous feeling for such a long time..Blood+ is a good anime too, but It doesn’t has that weird story like noein

    • December 18, 2006 at 4:24 pmFruits

I’d have to say it’s between Mushishi and Noein. I ended up voting for Mushishi. I enjoyed those two the most. They were definitely well made and had you think afterwards and left an impression, which can’t be said about most shows :)

    • December 18, 2006 at 4:47 pmAiri

      Ouran houhou hosto bu!

    • December 18, 2006 at 5:03 pmKiLa

OURAN~ i dont know if i liked ouran or haruhi better so i just picked ouran =) haruhi seems to be getting enough votes >

    • December 18, 2006 at 5:11 pmdg04

Like many others I had alot of favourites from this year, but in the end I decided to vote for Zegapain. I loved the plot and characters and was certainly one of the gems from the year.

On a side note I’m curious what the polls would look like if it was genre based, like favourite comedy, mecha, etc etc. Since it was really obvious that Haruhi would win any sort of poll haha.

    • December 18, 2006 at 5:21 pmHerculysse

      For .
      It’s a perfect work!(^^)

3rd: for its mise en scene/cadre.w

      And I’m watching ,
      with fun.

    • December 18, 2006 at 5:27 pmHerculysse

      (–;)Oh, sorry!

      Vote for Higurashi.
      2nd: Suzumiya Haruhi.
      3rd: Galaxy Ange-Rune.
watching with fun: Otome wa Boku ni Koi shiteru,
Yoake mae yoru Ruri iro na.
      (Ah! and Negima!?)

    • December 18, 2006 at 5:46 pmRavage

Voted for SHnY naturally, though if you had asked which was the best series of 2006 I would have voted for Mushishi(my 2nd favorite this year).

    • December 18, 2006 at 5:51 pmsel

    • December 18, 2006 at 6:06 pmkauldron26

ugh… im disgusted and the votes for shana, haruhi, Zero and ouran. WTF?? wut happened to concepts like story and directing? Black Lagoon, H and C II, mushishi, NOEIN, fate stay night and utawarerumono was far superior. Why do people follow fads and trends… ~sigh~

    • December 18, 2006 at 6:41 pmNinjikiran

The haruhi show was really bad lol… the story made no sense and jumped around every other episode. I just think the character was the charm for most people. I voted for fate but I think Zero definately belongs up there also. The story in zero was fairly original even if you can say it sort of had a matrix feel to it.

    • December 18, 2006 at 6:46 pmYumegari

To be honest, I watched only two of these shows this season. Nevertheless, chosing between Ouran and Nana is a really difficult task. How can I decide? Ouran was sweet and stuff, with all these jokes, funny characters and absolutely beautiful animation. What a pity they screwed the ending (which I hated). As a result, Nana wins – but those were not the only reasons. The truth is that it’s storyline, unique sense of humour and – let me say it aloud – THE BEST CHARACTERS EVER made me completely and hopelessly fall for this series. Seriousy, I adore it. And the last but not least: Ouran is bound to score high without my vote while Nana definitely deserves more attention than it receives…

    • December 18, 2006 at 6:49 pmsquatter

Why The Third has 0%? nobody likes this show??

    • December 18, 2006 at 7:22 pmbananabanana

      I dont see sumomomo.
I think it needs to be there

    • December 18, 2006 at 7:35 pmSunny

      Wheres Bleach?

    • December 18, 2006 at 7:36 pmSunny

Oh I see. Nva mind:P My bad

    • December 18, 2006 at 7:49 pmsi gila

i think this poll is too early since there was anime which is not complete aired yet ..
and that anime, should not be voted just because we dont know how the ending is going to be happened .. the ending for anime is including the part must to be aware of to be choosing as the best anime of the year … dont understand what im talking about? then DIE!

    • December 18, 2006 at 7:55 pmkeith

BLOOD+ all the way, blood plus for ever!

    • December 18, 2006 at 8:01 pmFrance001

well, its hard to choose between Welcome to the NHK! or Haruhi….i love both -.-, i guess ill choose NHK.

    • December 18, 2006 at 8:08 pmjohn_sama

I cant believe only a few people voted for fate/stay night…Its like the best anime ever! lol…well for me though hehe

    • December 18, 2006 at 8:29 pmshojo

It’s a close call between Suzumiya and Ouran for me, but there are other wonderful series as well, like Honey and Clover II, Mushishi, Blood+ and XXX HOLiC.

    • December 18, 2006 at 8:55 pmshia

WAHHH!!!!!! this is impossible! but in da end i went for higurashi =D i liked them all… T.T

    • December 18, 2006 at 9:02 pmRated-E

Suzumiya Haruhi easily stands out, but I also would have voted for Black Lagoon.

    • December 18, 2006 at 9:04 pmClef

Have to admit, this was a hard one to choose. I could have picked a dozen or more, but ended up going with Mai-Otome.

    • December 18, 2006 at 9:16 pmshirokiryuu

I choose Ouran, because Haruhi’s going to get a lot of votes anyways (and i liked Ouran better)

I would also vote for Welcome to the NHK! but i heart ouran more

    • December 18, 2006 at 9:18 pmDarkdam

yes it’s a hard decision, I love Suzumiya, but i also loved utawarerumono too, and shakugan no shana. AHHHHHHHHHH,

I guess i’ll choice suzumiya since that one was the most funny to me.

    • December 18, 2006 at 9:21 pmaya_s

Really tough choice. I feel Zegapain deserves more recognition, but honestly, Haruhi totally blew me away.

    • December 18, 2006 at 9:39 pmdward

Oh my….this is a very difficult choice indeed. I love Fate/Stay Night….I love Utawarerumono and I luuuuuurve Haruhi. So which did vote for? Haruhi of course!

    • December 18, 2006 at 10:03 pmS-chan

Higurashi for me. I feel in love with that. I am so happy they are going to make the rest of the arcs.

Haruhi will win most likely. It was good as well just didn’t give me the feeling like Higurashi, I hope that it too will have another go.

    • December 18, 2006 at 10:32 pmdarkangel

      its so hard to choose..

    • December 18, 2006 at 10:33 pmNeverwhere

If I had known no one would have voted for Saiunkoku Monogatari I would have chosen that instead. Surely I can’t be the only one who adores that series? :(

Such a difficult decision regardless — Haruhi, Ouran, Mushishi, HachiKuro…all so deliciously wonderful. Mmmmmm. :D

    • December 18, 2006 at 10:52 pmGloranor

There are so many great series – Haruhi, Higurashi no naku koro ni, Shakugan no Shana, Zero no Tsukaima, xxxHOLiC, Tsubasa Chronicles, Utawareru Mono, Zegapain, and on and on and on… (and I’m excluding running series here… without that, it would be even longer) – so hard to chose

Guess I go with the series that had the largest wow-effect/was the most touching for me – Canvas 2.

    • December 18, 2006 at 11:16 pmAvexMode

      But does Ichigo Mashimaro counts?

    • December 18, 2006 at 11:18 pmAvexMode

So hard to choose. I don’t see any comments mentioning Strawberry Panic.

    • December 18, 2006 at 11:25 pmfoxfire79

God… Ouran or Suzumiya… Suzumiya or Ouran… A hell, both main characters are called Haruhi!

      Ouran it is!

    • December 19, 2006 at 12:15 amYagami Iori

and my vote goes to SuzuHaru!

    • December 19, 2006 at 12:52 amShippoyasha

I voted for Power Puff Girls Z. lol

I can see how people voted for the other top choices and quite frankly, I enjoyed a whole variety of shows this year.

But something about PPGZ was simply lighthearted and just fun to follow. Other “mostly released in 2006″ shows I could’ve voted for was Pretty Cure Splash Star.

And Black Jack 21 is another underdog mention with a lot of great drama and action.

    • December 19, 2006 at 1:35 amEndz

I agree with neverwhere. I would’ve voted for Saiunkoku Monogatari if i knew that no one voted for it =/. Saiunkoku Monogatari is very underated :(

    • December 19, 2006 at 1:37 amdojikyo

I’m the 2nd person to vote for Canvas 2. As good as Haruhi was, too many of the episodes followed the same formula. Canvas 2, had relatively fewer throw away episodes than Haruhi did, and serves as model for how erogames should be adapted.

Btw, throw away episodes in Haruhi, baseball and 2nd half of murder mystery island. Delaying the 2nd half to show the baseball episode, effectively killed the atmosphere. 2 episodes for a short series.

Canvas 2 – Principal episode and 24 parody episode. 2 episodes for a long series.

    • December 19, 2006 at 1:57 amShinigami

Suzumiya is my one of my favorites, but soukou no starin has to get my vote hands down.

    • December 19, 2006 at 3:08 amShinnosuke

      Where is KANON ?

    • December 19, 2006 at 3:10 amSilver

Hmm… very nice. But I think that Black Cat also deserve some vote too. Same with Hanbun.

    • December 19, 2006 at 3:46 amOmni

-a better way to vote should be a ranking system, like rank your top 3 favorites (or probly top 5 cuz of the number of choices).
-wish it’s a multiple voting system. Guess that’s why the question ask for favourite rather than favourites.
-Never been too fond of these kind of “pick your favorite” polls, as unfortunately, when you only get to pick once, especially when there’s one choice (coughharuhicough) that you can pretty much guarantee is going to win, some choices which would be #2 or #3 on most people’s lists don’t get the representation they deserve.
I agree it would be a better way to do it, but I’m limited technologically. If you can show me a WordPress plug-in that does this, then I’ll be glad to use it. Otherwise, I don’t have the time or motivation to code one myself.

-If the vote button actually did anything, I’d vote Mushishi.
Not sure what your problem is, but I believe this voting plug-in doesn’t work for certain browsers. I tested it and it was fine for IE and Firefox, but not Opera.

-On a side note I’m curious what the polls would look like if it was genre based, like favourite comedy, mecha, etc etc. Since it was really obvious that Haruhi would win any sort of poll haha.
That’s too big of a logistical nightmare. Each series can potentially have multiple genres that it belongs to and I’d have to go through all 99 series and figure out what it best represents (and even then I’m sure there’d be tons of controversy). That’s a ton of work that I don’t have time to do.

      -I dont see sumomomo.
I think it needs to be there

Did you read the eligibility requirements I wrote up top? Sumomomo Momomo doesn’t qualify because it’s 26 total eps and will have only aired 12 before the end of the year.

-i think this poll is too early since there was anime which is not complete aired yet ..
and that anime, should not be voted just because we dont know how the ending is going to be happened .. the ending for anime is including the part must to be aware of to be choosing as the best anime of the year

Again, read the eligibility requirements I posted above. This is the inherent difficulty of multiple season anime coupled with deciding the best anime of a certain year.

      -Where is KANON ?
This was a personal oversight, my apologies. Based on syoboi, I was under the impression Kanon was 26 total episodes, not the 24 it’s supposed to be. If Kanon had indeed been 26, it wouldn’t have made the list because series would have aired exactly 13 episodes, qualifying for the next year (that was the decision I made when I put Shana into this year’s list since Shana was in the same situation last year – though technically Shana has an OVA and several shorts working in its favor too). It’s too late to add it now, but you can vote for Kanon in the favorite Fall 2006 anime poll coming later this week.

    • December 19, 2006 at 5:54 amKurigiri

      Wait, no Musashi? :

    • December 19, 2006 at 9:42 amTassardar

Suzumiya Haruhi is totally owning the chart lol

    • December 19, 2006 at 9:53 amKinny Riddle

Omni, it would have been easier if we were asked to pick 1 out of 10, but to pick only 1 choice out of 100 is just too hard a task. You should always consider giving people at least 10 choices in a shortlist of 100.

I would be forced to pick just Suzumiya Haruhi and ignore other good and entertaining series like Mai Otome, Honey and Clover II, Strawberry Panic and Shakugan no Shana to name but a few.

As a result, I’ve decided to abstain. I just can’t choose like that.

    • December 19, 2006 at 10:32 amTyper

Too many to choose from. There were quite a few nice titles.

    • December 19, 2006 at 11:11 amDeZheKun

Omni do not bother what the rest suggest to you! I view it as a form of critize instead of advice! People Omni already is very busy and yet he still substain this website! He is a great Guy so don’t give him anymore Suggestion where he do not have the time to do!

Omni I support you all the way =)

    • December 19, 2006 at 11:14 ampKjd

C’mon Canvas2! I know you can do it. I’m pullin’ for you. It’s not over till I say it’s over :D

    • December 19, 2006 at 11:37 amEld

can’t believe there is only 3% for Utawarerumono
      so sad -_-
personally haruhi was a good anime but i thought it was to random and they should have had more episodes

    • December 19, 2006 at 11:50 amsoltaire_rev

well, haruhi supposed to be better in the 2nd season, but i think for the title ‘the best’ itself will be for the most enjoyable which is haruhi ^^ (as for aesthetics in storytelling and life-lessons, mushishi may be the best, but it’s not a back2back enjoyment, like haruhi or ouran or zegapain) but still.. i chose mushishi lol

    • December 19, 2006 at 1:19 pmOmni

Omni, it would have been easier if we were asked to pick 1 out of 10, but to pick only 1 choice out of 100 is just too hard a task. You should always consider giving people at least 10 choices in a shortlist of 100.

As a result, I’ve decided to abstain. I just can’t choose like that.
It’s a complete trade-off of how many people I have complaining and what I’m technologically limited to. If I could give people the option of choosing their top 10 out of 100, I would. But as I said before, there’s no plug-in to do that, and I’m not about to write one. Asking people just to write out their top 10 would be hellish to tally and I just don’t have the time for that (never mind the fact that not everyone would speak out).
On the other hand, if I were to personally whittle the list down to the 10 anime I thought deserved the top spot and had people vote on that, I’d get a ton more complaints from people unhappy that their favorite series wasn’t on the list. If you look at the voting, only a handful of series haven’t received at least one vote, meaning that there’s always someone out there who likes a certain series better than anything else.
I truly feel that this method is the best way given the limitations of time and technology, and there have only been a handful of complaints compared to what I could have gotten.

In my opinion, Nana is the best !!! ^^

    • December 19, 2006 at 3:05 pmbagsybabe

though i did love Haruhi, Ouran stole my heart ^^

    • December 19, 2006 at 5:45 pmCarrie

This was hard! I had to choose between Haruhi, Ouran and Nana, but I gave the edge to Haruhi over Nana.. but only slightly! Too bad I couldn’t pick multiple choices. :p

    • December 19, 2006 at 7:35 pmHmm

It’s a shame that Suzumiya Haruhi aired this year, because there’s a LOT of good shows that any other year would have been the best. I voted for Haruhi, but after that my favourite has been Otogi Jushi Akazukin, because Tamura Yukari is

    • December 19, 2006 at 7:45 pmmango

      fate/stay nigght =)

    • December 19, 2006 at 7:54 pmKureejii

It would seem that it’s a battle between two Haruhis -.-’

    • December 19, 2006 at 8:01 pmDot

is it possible to see the vote in numbers instead of percentage?

    • December 19, 2006 at 8:09 pmmewmew

      multiple choices not allowed??? T.T
      haruhi…haruhi…fs/n…blood+…shana…nana…mai otome…bokura ga ita…higurashi…scl rumble…T.T

i ll just go for otome, since it was the series i went overboard over when it came to theories…

    • December 19, 2006 at 9:38 pmPakxenon

      >>>is it possible to see the vote in numbers instead of percentage?

2528 * .%% = voila. They’re also listed in order of votes, so currently, Otogi Jushi Akazukin (whatever this is lol) has the least votes and has votes.

As for people who’ve abstained, 2528 people don’t agree with you. :)

    • December 19, 2006 at 10:19 pmJane

I chose Fate Stay Night…. because of… er character and the feelin i got for the last few episodes…. but still, this could be quite a biased poll. lolx.

    • December 19, 2006 at 11:32 pmDot

      >>>2528 * .%% = voila. They’re also listed in order of votes, so currently, Otogi Jushi Akazukin (whatever this is lol) has the least votes and has votes.

that’s not percise enough given the numbers now well over 2500…1% could range from 25-49 votes and anything less than 0% could still have votes in them

i wanna see which 1% and 0% shows are doing better lol

    • December 20, 2006 at 12:09 amnunpol

Too many to choose. I wish you can choose 5 or 10 more and let’s rate it from 10 points to 1 points… but oh well *close eye and think hard* Pick Fate/Stay/Night.

    • December 20, 2006 at 1:57 amSyiveSe

This has turned into a pretty stellar year for anime… I have a dozen that I’ve enjoyed immensely (REC, Karin, Kanon, Ouran, Bokura, Hatakari, etc). Haruhi owns me, however (or maybe its Yuki, hard to tell) :)

Ouran Host club, that was the greatest, too bad no second season

My vote: Fate/stay night-it was the last episode that did it for me. It was very emotional and Saber’s one of my fav anime characters.

Second choice: Ouran Host Club-thoroughly enjoyed it but that was that-pure fun entertainment.

Last choice: Suzumiya Haruhi-very annoying main protagonist. I would’ve enjoyed it more if it weren’t for those hardcore Haruhiists trying to shove the whole ‘Haruhi is God’ business down my throat all the time.

      God it was hard to choose between Haruhi and NHK, I chosed Haruhi for Aya Hirano ^^;
Other Great shows of the year were as said
      NHK Ni Youkoso
      Death Note
      Black Lagoon

Definitely Ouran High School Host Club for me.
Some others I liked this year were Honey & Clover II, Black Cat (since it’s on the list), Death Note, Asatte No Houkou, and Bartender.
Ouran High School Host Club just blew me away though.
