Summary:

Adiane can’t believe that the princess Nia would be away from the capital and ultimately decides to back off for now, but she vows to come back. Upon returning to the Helix King though, she is shocked to learn that he has thrown away his daughter and doesn’t care what happens to her. Having promised to exterminate the humans and eliminate Nia, Adiane runs into Viral after the meeting with the Helix King. The still-injured Viral blames himself for Thymilph’s death and wants to go with her to the next battle, but Adiane has already decided to fight alone because she wants to be the one to avenge Thymilph. Back on the Daigurren, Nia is having a feast under the watch of a crew that is now very suspicious of her. Kittan, who calls himself the leader of the Gurren Brigade, tries to interrogate her, but she seems not to understand any of the words he uses, such as “enemy” or “fist.” Since he personally didn’t have much luck at it, Kittan turns to Simon to get information about the enemy out of Nia.

Nia had heard from Kittan about everything her father did, but she feels that he wouldn’t have done them without a reason. Although he thinks that the Helix King is the bad guy and someone that he hates, Simon doesn’t know if he hates Nia too. Simon was able to fight because Kamina was there and trusted in him. When Nia questions who Kamina is, Simon explains it to her, making her realize that she can’t help if everyone hates her. Simon doesn’t thinks that anyone hates Nia and explains that Kamina didn’t fight with hatred. No matter how serious the situation, Kamina always had a smile on his face. Yoko then chimes in that Kamina was really stupid, and since she wants to hear more about Kamina, he goes on to talk about a time when he and Kamina got trapped underground during an earthquake. Simon was afraid of dying like his parents, but Kamina encouraged him to go forward, and so it was Kamina not giving up and not letting him give up that saved them. Simon knows that it’s always been like that, and without Kamina, he can’t do anything. That’s why he wants to become like Kamina.

Nia, however, disagrees and cites how Simon saved her by himself. She asks why Simon is so obsessed about Kamina, and Simon’s simply responds by saying that Nia didn’t know Kamina. Nia agrees that she can’t know someone who’s not here, but she also feels that Simon shouldn’t depend on someone who’s not here either. This statement causes Yoko to lash out at Nia, accusing her of not understanding Simon’s feelings because she didn’t know Kamina. Taking a stand, Nia claims that although she might not know Kamina, she understands Simon – he’s not someone who can’t do anything, so he shouldn’t be endlessly obsessed with Kamina. This gets Yoko even angrier and makes her question if Nia knows whose fault it is that Kamina is dead. Yoko agrees that no matter how much they mourn, Kamina won’t come back, so it might be easier if they forgot about him. However, it’s not so easy to forget. Noticing that Yoko is crying as she walks away, Nia declares that she wants to know more about them.

A little later, Adiane strikes again and wants to talk with Nia. Since they need to buy some time before they can get the Daigurren moving again, Kittan is willing to hand over Nia despite Simon’s objection that it’s dangerous. Nia personally wants to go and Yoko lets her, though she’ll be watching for if Nia attempts anything funny. The first thing Nia asks Adiane is if they are causing humans suffering, and Adiane confirms that their mission is to exterminate all humans, as per Nia’s father’s orders. Realizing what Adiane thinks of humans, Nia demands to be taken to her father. This is the point where Adiane ends the pleasantries and explains that Nia isn’t a princess anymore because the Helix King abandoned her. Reminded of how he had watched Nia’s box being thrown down that ravine, Simon rushes back to the Lagann and tries to activate it, but to no avail. Getting back into her Gunmen called Sayrune, Adiane transforms it into a scorpion and point its claws and stinger at Nia. Since Adiane says that she’ll kill Nia just because she was ordered to, Nia questions if Adiane would die if the Helix King told her to.

Adiane has no answer to this, so Nia continues by saying that Adiane is mistaken and that the humans haven’t done anything wrong. When Adiane points out that the humans killed Thymilph, which is enough of a reason for her, Nia counters with their loss of Kamina. Nia feels that people get sad and hurt when someone dies, and she asks if Adiane feels that it’s strange they keep hurting each other like that. Since Adiane doesn’t care and is ready to kill, Simon gives up trying to start up the Lagann and just runs out on foot to save Nia. The rest of the group follows him in their respective Gunmen, but they don’t make it in time to stop the Sayrune’s stinger. Fortunately, Yoko’s rifle blasts do. Simon is meanwhile overcome in speed by the Gunmen and trips onto the ground while the Gunmen all tackle the Sayrune at once. The Sayrune has no trouble handling her opponents, but when Leeron finally gets the Daigurren moving, he is able to use it to punt the Sayrune. Adiane is about to get crushed, though luckily for her, Viral arrives in the Enkidu to save her.

Viral is adamant about leaving with Adiane despite her not wanting to go, but he does catch sight of the Gurren first. Not knowing that it’s Rossiu piloting, Viral vows to come back and finish things, but for now, he gets away with Adiane. In the aftermath, the entire team cheers for Nia because of how she stood up for them to Adiane. Simon, however, was not able to participate in the battle and walks away limping from his fall. Nia brings some food to his room later and tell him that she knows he came to save her faster than anyone else. She thanks him for that, but Simon never answers his door. Instead, he remains in bed, distraught over how he can’t become like Kamina.

I liked this episode, but it lacked a certain excitement and intensity that previous episodes had. Perhaps it was the fact that it was the supporting cast doing most of the fighting and Simon unwillingly sitting this one out (leading to more angst for him). I really hope that something happens soon so that Simon will gain some confidence. He may not be able to replace Kamina, but he should be able to make himself cool in his own way. Nia meanwhile I’m expecting more and more to die eventually. Having the Helix King abandon her is one way to get her onto Simon’s side, but it also means that the bad guys are now gunning for her. If she does die, it would probably be another step in the process of Simon growing up – losing a girl he loves or something.
Finally, there’s one important thing I have to note about the preview for next week’s episode in relation to what [anon] translated. In the preview, Nia is talking about the dark, deep, and frightening hole in a person’s heart, not flower as [anon] says. It’s the difference between the word ana (hole) and hana (flower). It likely relates back to what Yoko said in episode nine about the hole in her heart and the one in Simon’s.

Angst is too weak of a word to use. He’s damn EMO!

Viral and Adiane are a couple?

  • June 2, 2007 at 10:24 pm7Th

    No, they’re team-mates… kinda.

  • June 2, 2007 at 11:03 pmGP

Yoko seems pretty pissed in this ep, seems like she doesn’t like Nia much.

  • June 2, 2007 at 11:09 pmwonton

i would be surprised if yoko wasnt pissed at nia, afterall, she is the helix kings daughter who’s henchmen killed Kamina

You don’t see too many mecha with boobies for eyes these days. Or giant walking mecha bases with sword-wangs (or drills-wangs), heh. Gotta love GL’s suggestive character and mecha designs. Now that one of the 4 generals is dead, I wonder if Viral will be promoted to be a new general (even if his name isn’t/doesn’t start with the letter of one of the 4 building blocks of DNA – ACGT). Helix King does make more sense now, along with Viral’s name. Though I wonder how the whole beastmen angle fits into the story (genetic experimentation on humans, probably, if Adiane has a scorpion’s tail and Viral a little on the monkey-king-ish side). Things got a lot more interesting with Nia’s introduction.

I want to know who gets the honor of walloping the executive who thought this made the most sense being aired at a children’s hour. This *deserved* to be on during adult prime time so they could flex their skills. I understand the DVD releases go a long way to overcome those issues :)

Can’t wait to see the recent pack of episodes subbed.

  • June 3, 2007 at 3:38 amEirias

Maybe the new replacement general will have a name based on Uracil.

  • June 3, 2007 at 4:14 amtay

oh boy, simon should really drop the “cant be like kamina thing..” time for him to shape up and grow up!! cant wait to see wht future simon looks like! this totally rocks!

  • June 3, 2007 at 4:24 amGil

    Who was in the Gurren?

  • June 3, 2007 at 4:28 amOmni

    Rossiu was piloting the Gurren.

  • June 3, 2007 at 5:21 amTripleA

    1. I hope Simon turns neo-Kamina fast… or at least grows some balls
    2. Viral thinks Kamina is still alive… wonder if this fits into the story somewhere

  • June 3, 2007 at 9:35 amRasmiel

I hope Simon drops his emo attitude A.S.A.P…As much as I enjoy character development, I’d like to see some courage for a change.

  • June 3, 2007 at 10:30 amDrakron

Simon is trying to act as Kamina, that is why Lagann is not working.

Until Simon acts as Simon is not going to work, Simon is Simon and not Kamina but its going to take some time before Simon manage to understand that (its called “character development”, at least proper one).

  • June 3, 2007 at 1:50 pmDiinytro

Wow, that robot has some big tits.

  • June 3, 2007 at 3:41 pmEra

probably simon is going to get out his trauma next episode.

  • June 3, 2007 at 7:29 pmAnonymous

Simon will get out of emo mode by doing what he does best, Drilling. And then Lagann will work once more.

  • June 3, 2007 at 9:34 pmKenji

good episode. i personally like the whole character development thing. dont want simon to become strong all of a sudden, but of course wish for it to happen eventually. makes me want to watch the next episode already.

    lol vagina dentata

I have to say this episode was very disappointing. I am not happy with Simon being in emo mode this long. I’m also surprised how Yoko is not supporting Nia’s argument. Yoko should know better. She knows that Nia is right, even though she does not want to admit it. I could understand how she feels, but she can’t always cling on to her memories of Kamina with despair and anger. This also applies to Simon. I am sick and tired of him acting as he is Kamina’s shadow, who can not live up to his expectation. Not once, and I mean not once, did Kamina ever tell him to become like him.

I am expecting next week’s episode to be the last episode of Simon being in emo mode.

From what I’ve seen, the only way Simon would get his senses back is if Kamina came back spiritually and punch Simon in the face for the third and last time. Clearly, Nia seems to be not helping right now…but that can all change next week since she has taken the right step this week, despite being naive at times.

  • June 4, 2007 at 4:27 amEnd0rphine

Woner if he only wants to be like kamina so he can have a ‘connection’ with Yoko.

  • June 4, 2007 at 5:11 amGuy

I’ve watched the raw’s and i watched the sub by [anon](Although the subs were all gumbled what player do you guys use i cant cleary see the subs), anyway Simon cant ever be Kamina, and i hope he realizes this. He cant become Kamina, but he can surpass him. As for Nia i see her playing a key role in his comming out, but i could be wrong i have been before :/.

  • June 4, 2007 at 7:10 amtay

^use media player classic or zoom player, comes together w/ cccp codec.

this is wht happens whn u hav someone shadowin the main protagonist.. and thts also the main reason i hated kamina and all his big talk.. anyway in my POV, simon should really leave this “dai gurren dan” thing and go solo (well mayb together w/ Nia and Rossiu) since in this ep it clearly shows that they can fend for ‘em self (well not until som big baddas enemy shows up n beat the crap out of them).. its hard for simon to lead a bunch of testosterone filled team.. kittan really is on my nerve now.. but i can also see simon gets his act together whn som really, really badass enemy show up and save the day and the team realize w/out simon, there would nvr be this so call “dai” gurren dan in the 1st place.. ;p

  • June 4, 2007 at 1:44 pmjiv

I wonder why no one has commented the fact that someone wants to blow the brains up off nia. At fisrt i thought it was Yoko. But given that the title is actually “Simon, remove your hand”, it seems that Simon is the one that going to try to kill nia.

  • June 4, 2007 at 2:48 pmGuy

Titles can be missleading, but we wont know for sure till next week.
    I cant wait!

  • June 4, 2007 at 2:54 pmDis

About Simon becoming “cool in his own way”, check out the start of epi 1.

I am getting so many E7 vibes off of this show recently xD

rofl, this shot made me laugh so much XD.

anyways, i agree with the many of posters here @_@ that simon gone-emo-mode isn’t really a fair sight to see lol. But I think it sort of shows how Kamina’s role-modelling will indeed bring about the change…but i wonder how this is going to end…@_@ i hope it’s not going to be one of those open-ended plots..

  • June 6, 2007 at 10:04 pmfoot13

I have a feeling that the beastmen are gona become allies eventually and simon is gona be the leader of everyone and the plot is just gona keep gettign bigger. Look at the first episode there in space! And it looks like some sort of war.

  • June 8, 2007 at 4:12 amNez

Yeah, Dis has got this one right: I’d bet anything that the guy in the beginning of Ep. 1 is Simon, AKA older Kamina with a crazy-ridiculous space-army, all the confidence, and none of the ineptitude of the original. I mean, come on! Look at ‘im!

Also, whoever made the comment about the mecha with boobs for eyes… that’s freaking NOTHING compared to where its mouth is. Heheh.

  • June 8, 2007 at 7:45 pmtay

….the guy in ep1 IS future SIMON.. not AKA older KAMINA (whr did tht came from?) note the drill in his hands and the phrase SPIN ON LAGANN..

  • December 7, 2007 at 11:43 pmAnonymous

Damn, Adiane has a huge mouth. Poor Viral, getting beat up so much. D8

And that mecha has boobs. That’s not normal.
