Reader’s Choice – Favorite Anime 2007 Poll

It’s time for the Second Annual Reader’s Choice Poll! There are a lot of good choices this year, and I’m still in the process of choosing my own favorites (having a hard time deciding between GEASS and Gurren Lagann, among others), but below, you can vote for your Favorite Anime of 2007 from a list of every single series that’s ended this past year.

If you voted in the first annual poll last year, you might remember that I had a somewhat complex set of criteria for shows that were included on the list. This year, I’ve decided to simply include every anime series (no OVAs or movies) that ended in 2007, with the only exceptions being the handful that ended last January. The general idea is that you can’t judge a series properly until it’s completely over. That means fans of Clannad or any of the other currently airing shows that are two seasons long will have to wait until next year’s poll (and that’s also why Kanon is on the list).

All together, there are 135 choices, plus “Other” in case there’s a relatively obscure anime series you really enjoyed that’s not on the list (or even something that I just neglected to add). Choose your favorite and the winner will get included in next week’s post!

This poll will close Wednesday, December 26th, 2007 at 11:59 PM.

Which new series are you looking forward to the most in Spring 2014? (Choose up to 5)

    Gurren Lagann FTW!

  • December 20, 2007 at 8:17 pmKyi-chan

    NANA ^^!
Death Note a close second – these left the biggest impact on me =]

  • December 20, 2007 at 8:35 pmvex

I still dont understand why code geass would be on here if Clannad wasnt. Code Geass is having another season and didnt even really end. O and Kanon btw.

  • December 20, 2007 at 8:37 pmMajestic

Gotta be Dennou Coil. By far the most original and fun series I’ve seen in awhile.

  • December 20, 2007 at 8:45 pmVoxune

Tegen Toppa Gurren Lagann! hard to choose between TTGL and Code Geass.. But I think Code Geass is more like best of 2006, en TTGL is just the best anime from 2007

  • December 20, 2007 at 9:00 pmSenefen

    Code Geass!
I read most of death note so that killed it for me when it came out. Watched it all over the last few days with my brother tho.
Anyway Code Geass still, I think it was the only series I enjoyed all the way to the end this year.

  • December 20, 2007 at 9:09 pmYamanote

    GURREN LAGANN!!

  • December 20, 2007 at 9:20 pmUchiha Melody

Nodame Cantabile all the way! =DD

  • December 20, 2007 at 9:41 pmady6

Multi selection (example 3) will prove to provide better picture of the favorite anime, however in this case, Bocanno will get my vote.

  • December 20, 2007 at 9:54 pmTelliamed

Hardest part is I haven’t actually watched most of these shows. Tentatively, I’d vote for Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. (I’m gonna think about it a few days first)

Pardon the self-promotion, but I’m hosting my own poll, where you can vote for OP/ED songs. (link in the name)

  • December 20, 2007 at 10:02 pmmonkey sanchez

    Baccano
    sayonara zetsubou-sensei

  • December 20, 2007 at 10:03 pmmonkey sanchez

    Baccano

  • December 20, 2007 at 10:13 pmburu

    BLUE DROP!

  • December 20, 2007 at 10:27 pmCarrie

I had to vote for Nana, cuz it’s my favourite series of all time. If it was onlu series that aired this year, I would have given it to Lucky Star, I think.

  • December 20, 2007 at 11:19 pmDon

Hard to choose between Geass and Gurren Lagann. Kannon was good too. But I decided to go with Darker than Black. I just loved it cause how refreshing it felt to watch.

  • December 20, 2007 at 11:41 pmw

Mononoke for sure then followed by Dennou Coil. But DC’s ending and other flaws let Mononoke top it.

  • December 20, 2007 at 11:59 pman eggroll

    easily code geass

  • December 21, 2007 at 12:01 amLadies Man

    cmon DARKER THAN BLACK!!

  • December 21, 2007 at 12:30 amjenabella

    CLAYMORE !!!!

  • December 21, 2007 at 1:17 amThom

    Nodame Cantabile.

  • December 21, 2007 at 2:01 amvexx

This was massively difficult with Lucky*Star, Kanon, Minami-ke, Sketchbook, Gurren-Lagann and the like….

I ended up throwing Lovely*Complex a vote because it actually is that rare creature in romantic comedy that does not trainwreck at the end – and all the characters and couples were nicely developed characterizations. … and the great dialog and voice acting.

  • December 21, 2007 at 2:40 amFlameStrike

    Easy enough, straight to Kanon

  • December 21, 2007 at 3:13 amfilou

Gurren Lagann!! By far the best.
    Hey Anikiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii : )

  • December 21, 2007 at 3:19 amshirokiryuu

    DENNOU COIL!!

  • December 21, 2007 at 3:32 amJenose

i think there are not many fan for my favourite anime.

    Ai-Chan!

  • December 21, 2007 at 5:52 am天災流川

    Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann.

  • December 21, 2007 at 6:23 amVenire

Wow, my choice right at the top. Nice going, Baccano!, already on the top =P

  • December 21, 2007 at 6:34 amMaimeDaifuku

I just noticed that Nagasarette Airantou got like no votes from the people who comment.
What a shame. All the production money was for the last episodes and the ending was such a crappy one…

SUZU, WHY DIDN’T YOU JUST GRAB IKUTO AND JUST TAKE HIM?!?!?!?!

  • December 21, 2007 at 7:42 amAiras

Code Geass for the win o/

  • December 21, 2007 at 11:36 am4ran

it is not fair ! more then 1 series dsrvs to be the best of this year :F

  • December 21, 2007 at 12:20 pmAlastor

It’s gotta be either Darker than Black, Code Geass, ef, or Higurashi. I would have added Death Note on my top list but I didn’t particularly liked the second half with the inclusion of Nero and Mell. Since Code Geass will probably get the majority of the votes in my group of favorites, it will have to be between Darker than Black (heads) and ef (tails). Let’s flip a coin. And the results are….
Heads! Okay, Darker than Black it is.

  • December 21, 2007 at 12:24 pmAlastor

    Nooooo! There’s a caching problem. I can’t vote. =( I guess I’ll have to wait.

  • December 21, 2007 at 12:29 pmoofuri ftw

looks like i’m the only one who voted for oofuri. real hidden gem. anyway, how come genshiken 2 is on the list? isn’t it still being aired?

  • December 21, 2007 at 12:47 pmlogcake

    u should allow multi-picking! it’s hard to decide :p
my faves: darker than black, dennou coil, and saiunkoku

  • December 21, 2007 at 1:57 pm~REM

WTH? 1 out of 135 choice? Impossible man!
I just rank my top 6 show

    Claymore
    Dennou Coil
    Lovely Complex
    Seirei No Moribito
    Terra E
    NANA

  • December 21, 2007 at 3:32 pmJose Fuentes

My favorite till the moment has to be ef a tale of memories since it has not ended yet but it last episode gonna be the 22 of december.so its ef. if not then seto no hanayome

  • December 21, 2007 at 5:28 pmkamira

    Oh god…such a difficult choice.
But between the very original and enjoyable Dennou Coil, the amazing but still unfinished story of Nodame Cantabile(I really want another season!!) and the impressive Gurren Laggan, i’ll stick with the last one just because it really is an epic.

  • December 21, 2007 at 7:38 pmKatapan

Ookiku Furikabutte, definitely. Too bad the series’ popularity is close to non-existent here.
Kekkaishi would be a close second, but it doesn’t fit the criteria for the poll anyway, so the choice was easy.

  • December 21, 2007 at 8:37 pmTom

I can’t pick i would go crazy to pick one but these are definitely my top:
Ghost Hunt, Heroic Age, Seto no Hanayome and Minami-ke.

Average: Code Geass, Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun, Lovely Complex, Myself;Yourself, Mushi-Uta, Claymore, Kishin Taisen Gigantic Formula, Shounen Onmyouji, and Tokimeki Memorial ~Only Love~.

Bad: School Days, Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei, and probably everything else

My idea of a good anime is one that I am willing to sit down and watch from beginning to the end, some of these anime series like Sumomo mo Momo mo, Shining Tears X Wind, and many others i only watch the first few episode then stop.

But I am surprise Clannad is not there, that definitely go to my top.

  • December 21, 2007 at 8:38 pmTom

Forgot to add Rental Magica to my top.

  • December 22, 2007 at 12:10 amSomethingLeft

    @ Tom
Interesting list you got there, pretty different from my picks.

I had to either sell out Kanon…or TTGL. In the end i voted TTGL… Im sry Kanon, maybe some other time.

  • December 22, 2007 at 12:18 amkruzer

definitely Gurren Lagann, but no way it’s gonna win on this blog.

  • December 22, 2007 at 12:23 amForwho

Chevalier is Le Chevalier D’eon right? It’s hard to choose between Baccano and Le Chevalier D’eon.

  • December 22, 2007 at 1:24 amhasako

Omg so many but dennou coil…it beat the higurashi kai just by abit and if it was the first season of higurashi it woulda won but dennou coil was just so good

  • December 22, 2007 at 3:06 amgintama

    lucky star!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • December 22, 2007 at 5:19 amD

    Night Wizard
It’s really rare one for anime based on TRPG.

  • December 22, 2007 at 6:42 amstarcaptor

I predict it will be a showdown between the KyoAni-Halo-Effect duo, Death Note, Code Geass, and like…a shared 20% of the pie for every other series people pick >DD

My personal pick was RomeoxJuliet. Original re-take, well animated, and the pace was very appropriate.

  • December 22, 2007 at 7:01 amLight-kun

Claymore was the best even though the ending could have been better…

  • December 22, 2007 at 9:20 ampanda monium

it flew under the radar a bit, this one, but i absolutely loved sola. gem of a show: not overambitious, but did what it set out to do perfectly.

  • December 22, 2007 at 1:09 pmjiroNIKA

    LUCKY STAR!

  • December 22, 2007 at 1:30 pmheavenANDhell

So many contenders! I can’t pick one! Although I would like to pick Death note, but I also liked Code geass! AWWWW!!!!! I don’t know which one to pick! Can I pick all? lol

But Death note is on top of my list!

    RIP KIRA……

  • December 22, 2007 at 1:42 pmMatt

Gurren-Lagann, hands down. BACCANO! was a serious contender but what it had going for it was mostly zaniness, and Gurren-Lagann does zany like no other.

  • December 22, 2007 at 1:49 pmGod

DEATH NOTE!! best animation, best soundtrack and best plot :D

  • December 22, 2007 at 4:58 pmMinikui

best animation is Seirei no Moribito, no doubt. (Best plot as well imho ;)

  • December 22, 2007 at 6:29 pmlady_varg

Gurren Lagann. Most memorable lines, characters, the battles were amazing, nothing I couldn’t love about that show. Dennou Coil, Code Geass and Baccano! tie for a close second though.

  • December 22, 2007 at 7:24 pmKarasuhebi

    Where’s NARUTO? NARUTO ended in 2007…. >.>

    -Karasuhebi

    P.S: Not a joke.

    Myself; Yourself is da besttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • December 23, 2007 at 1:55 pmSora no Kaze

Busou Renkin! had to be it, since it was one of my favorites. I wish we could ahve more choices. Then I would have chosen Clannad, Lucky Star, and Code Geass.

  • December 23, 2007 at 2:11 pmStormFangs

It was hard to chose…so many good series this year…Code geass,Nana,School days….
But Lulu won my vote,in the end

  • December 23, 2007 at 3:15 pmKiwi

    For me Ghost Hunt

  • December 23, 2007 at 4:00 pmShadow-Chan

Terra e… and Seirei no Moribito.

  • December 23, 2007 at 4:53 pmBonta-kun

MINAMI-KE!!!… XD omg… it has been a while that i saw a really good comedy anime

  • December 23, 2007 at 5:53 pmeipu

Darker than BLACK for me *__*

  • December 23, 2007 at 6:30 pmSasha

    Negima!? for me.

Unlike most of the people, I didn’t enjoy Geass or Lagan.

  • December 23, 2007 at 7:48 pm41nano

Great year overall. Personally, I retain:
-From Fall: DEATH NOTE, Kanon and CODE GEASS.
-From Winter: Hidamri Sketch and Nodame Cantabile.
-From Spring: Gurren Lagann, Lucky Star, Bokurano and Darker Than Black
and from Summer: Zetsubou Sensei and NICE BOAT!
Overally, lucky star is the best imo

  • December 23, 2007 at 9:42 pmAbby

Can we have Multi-picking? No? Oh well.

  • December 23, 2007 at 10:46 pmMidori

Hard choice, but was Code Geass in the end for me.

  • December 24, 2007 at 3:52 amRyan

I like Nodame Cantabile, it had a nice story, and was not as complex as Code Geass.

  • December 24, 2007 at 4:32 amMiraNai

Ugh… I used to really like Romeo x Juliet but once it hit somewhere beyond the middle it became less interesting to watch… And I was disappointed that they went the supernatural route with the series. =/

It didn’t seem like a lot of anime kept me interested this year, not Code Geass or Gurren Lagann…. I wanted a good romance series but we got stuck with School Days. Wow, I really wanna know where that one stands. (Almost voted for it, too.)

Using spoiler tags because I don’t want others to see my vote unless they’re curious.

  • December 24, 2007 at 12:35 pmwa-totem

Dennou Coil. Though Code Geass and Darker than Black followed closely…

  • December 24, 2007 at 1:52 pmKaioshin Sama

Gurren Lagann for me, but if I had to pick who the winner will ultimately be, I would suspect it will end up being Lucky Star because of the Kyoani effect alone. It’s very hard to break through that level of rabidity and fans these days who just probably won’t watch Gurren Lagann or anything else non-Kyoani/Romance/Slice of Life, because of it’s genre to see how fun it is. Plus Lucky Star made frequent references to Haruhi (something everyone and their mom has heard of), while Gurren Lagann’s treats were for fans of old Super Robot anime that most in the west have probably never even heard of, so few will get the refs. Maybe next year the trend will end and just by being in the right genre or by the right studio won’t carry the day. Even still it was refreshing to see a unique series “make a breakthrough” in an increasingly one tone form of art.

Though I could easily end up being wrong this year, and if so it would be quite a tremendous surprise.

  • December 24, 2007 at 5:01 pmpiccu

There were lots of nice anime this year, including the ones that started last year fall season, of course ;D
I’d say Baccano, eventhough Code Geass, School Days and Claymore were fairly outstanding as well.

  • December 25, 2007 at 11:39 amNeo Horizon

Kanon and Gurren Lagann. I’m so torn. T___T

    *votes for Kanon…*

  • December 25, 2007 at 4:31 pmfake

Kodomo no Jikan, Best Anime of the year 2007.

  • December 26, 2007 at 4:13 amPakxenon

Me and a few other people. Voted for iDOLM@STER Xenoglossia. Yep.

Runner-ups for me would have been ef and School Days. After that, Death Note and Higurashi Kai.

  • December 26, 2007 at 3:48 pmDesh0

    Top 3 2007:

    1. Death Note
    2. Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann
    3. Code Geass

I vote for Death Note, one of the best series of all time.

Either Code Geass or Lucky Star

  • December 28, 2007 at 6:09 pmSkyLark

Is Death Note bolded for anyone else? Does bolded signal what we voted for?

I ask because I voted for Minami-ke, and was really letdown when it stopped being covered here at eight episodes in!
