Impressions:
I was looking forward to the School Rumble San Gakki OVA when I heard it was announced, but I wasn’t sure what to expect. After watching the first episode, I have to say it was nothing like I expected and I’m somewhat disappointed in both the production quality (isn’t this supposed to be an OVA!?) and lack of continuity between the previous season, Ni Gakki. For the former reason, I’ll let the screen captures speak for themselves. As for the lack of continuity, the episode started off with some very quick recap of the main characters as per a typical Sukuran episode, but quickly shifted into a discussion of the third semester, revealing a bunch of scenes we’ve never seen before. At first, I thought I had forgotten what happened at the end of the last season, but it turned out that these were scenes to get us up to speed on what’s happening now. Basically, it was like being thrown into a whirlwind of a premise that was difficult to accept right away. To make things worse, the episode continued on in the same manner, expecting us to have absorbed the first two minutes of in-your-face information. Needless to say, it made the episode itself a little hard to enjoy because it felt like it was all over the place (which it was, so I might not even summarize it properly). I would even go as far as saying that unless you still have all the Sukuran characters fresh in your mind, you might even get lost in some of their antics.

In short though, it’s the third semester of school and Tenma finally gets her feelings across to Kurasuma, but he’s leaving for America so he turns her down. Seeing an extremely depressed Tenma, Harima takes it upon himself to beat up Karasuma, who fights back saying he’s just a coward and actually loves her. (Where the hell did this come from!? Also, an emotional Karasuma!) After beating the hell out of each other, the two finally see eye to eye, so Karasuma says that he feels Harima can make Tenma happy. As for himself, Kurasuma says that he’s content with just watching her from afar, then heads off to the airport. Meanwhile, Harima rushes over to Tenma saying he can make her happy, which shocks everyone else. However, instead of confessing, he drags her off to the airport, trying to catch Karasuma in time.

Finally, the opening song is the same as the first season, which is Scramble by Horie Yui with UNSCANDAL. (Horie Yui also plays Sawachika Eri.) The ending song is also the same as the first season, except it’s sung by Tenma and Yakumo’s seiyuus this time, hence the download I’ve provided above.

Addendum:
I renamed the post to episode 25, because this two part OVA is supposed to be the last two episodes of the not-going-to-be-produced third season, which is also the end of the School Rumble series (not counting the School Rumble Z manga sequel of course). According to what I’ve seen online, this is the intended numbering for these episodes. Now as to whether or not episodes 1-24 will be animated, I would say it’s highly unlikely at this point, but if you have information that indicates otherwise, please feel free to send me an e-mail about it and I’ll correct this space. Finally, there’s a clip of Koshimizu Ami and Noto Mamiko talking about San Gakki on the official site, but in Japanese only of course.

  1. This is going to crash harder than the manga’s ending.

Really disappointing. This is coming from a guy that has spent several hundred dollars importing collectables PVC figures and manga’s from Japan.

  2. so i guess they just gonna animate the ending of the manga, , then they better have in there what ever happens in 283….. however it would have been much better if they had made a third season with about them going to the field trip arc and all… awe well.. at least the ending is animated.

  3. Ungas, If u start Reading from Chapter 240 to 282 u will find the scene between those chapters, its a long range but that also what the OAV is basically adapted from…

  4. They jumped over most of the third term to show the end of it and what recently happened in the manga. Looks like this OVA covers some stuff leading right up to chapter 265.

  5. OMBFG!!! An emotional Karasuma???!!!

Umm… Things look kind of rush although Harima still looks as cool as ever. Hopefully, the next episode won’t be so rushed like this one.

  6. @Ungas
They fight in chapters 263 and 264.

Back on topic. It was a little weird seeing Karasuma like that, considering he’s always quiet yet eccentric, but it makes me like him even more. I feel sorry for what happens to him *being vague*. And if they plan to cover it till the end, this probably will be more than two episodes, unless they spread it a little thin.

  7. A lot of people is disappointed with the manga finale : besides having too many open ends, Harima ends up exactly where he was at the beginning of the story. Let’s hope the anime ending is better.

  8. @Fumika:
Actually, I was thinking “continuity”, so I’m not sure why I typed “contingency”. Pretty much for those unfamiliar with the manga (myself included), this episode felt very disjointed.

  10. whats happening here is that the producers are expecting that the audience have already read the manga so that is one of the problems I am seeing here. Another thing is that this specific arc was pretty long, so trying to fit it to a single ( or 2?) episodes is kind of a bad idea and also they cut out a lot of the things (and most of the things) that made this arc somewhat interesting, because to be honest it was king of boring

  11. I am not even going to watch this! I dont know why but the fact that they really didnt put much effort to the best anime ever made on earth is really turning me off.
ALSO WHAT IN THE NAME OF THE LORD ARE THEY DOING? Why didnt they make a whole series? We watched their anime, supported them until the end and now they give us a 2 OVA episodes that skip the WHOLE SERIES? THEY SKIPPED AMAZING SCENES AND SITUATIONS! WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY! No matter how many times i ask i know i wont take a correct answer. All i am gonna ask is where can i read the manga!

WHERE CAN I READ THE MANGA! DAMN YOU ALL(meant for those who made the anime)

  12. I got some idea, they probably plan to make a TV series but probably next year. These OVA’s where just time skip. It would be announce in the 2nd part of these OVA in September 2008.
So I got a feeling SR Term 3 TV series is around September 2009.

    arigatou
  13. Well first time ever Karusuma has flipped.

But I am quite disappointed that they have skipped so many parts of the manga and decided to go to this arc already. I hope they have a sangakki tv series with 26 episodes.

  14. @SanGakki:
Especially as a person reading the manga of SA, I’m sure that Hikari and Tenma being similar is pretty much wrong, not to offense you.
I guess that’s a fanservice for Tsukamoto Tenma&Karasuma Ooji fans (like me XD).
    Great job as always, divine.

  15. This is episode “24” of School Rumble san gakki. 24 in quotes because there is no eps 1 through 23. The next episode is episode 25. As far as I’ve heard/researched there is sadly no plans for them to go back and animate the rest of the series. This OVA is strictly a closing to match the manga and nothing more.

    Koji
  16. lol this isn’t episode 01; it’s 24 or 25 (I forgot which one). Also this OVA is supposed to be a treat for manga readers, which is why it was bundled with a volume of School Rumble. So of course it wouldn’t make sense for an anime only watcher to watch this.

  17. Skips 40 manga chapters, and just says this? …..Damn it, producers of this. Why did you leave out some of the great stuff that was in the chapters of the manga????? Why?

    Ojsinnerz
  18. A true fan will not completely agree with this kind of ending… but I can’t really blame the author. Think about this guys, its kind of hard to have and ending that would satisfy everyone… so I think it was better this way (Can’t stop comparing this with the last two episodes of Evangelion or the ending of Escaflowne)

    Messhermit
  19. Wow, timeskip in the manga, timeskip in the Anime. I HATE TIMESKIPS.

SR doesn’t even get a full-fledged season 3, just a bunch of assorted scenes…40 chapters skipped.

This totally proves what Kodansha thinks of School Rumble: Worthless.

Sorry I am being a bit emotional…I’m just a die-hard SR fan disappointed at the treatment it got.

    W-General
  20. harima u may look BADASS!! but i AINT FALLING FOR THIS SHOW AGAIN!! 2 seasons is ENOUGH!!
if my highschool experience was anything even remotely like this, everybody would still be virgin’s wondering if somebody liked them.
CONFESS!!!!!! CONFESS ALREADY!!!!!!! ALL OF YOU CHARACTERS!!!!!! CONFESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!! IN THE NAME OF PROGRESS!!! CONFESS!!!!!!!

    BROOKLYN otaku
  21. @ Messhermit

So instead of making an ending that would satisfy SOME people he ends with a lame pie fight that satisfies nobody? It almost feels like had KJ wiped his butt on a page it would have been a more satisfying ending. Come on…A pie fight? jesus.

    Some guy
  22. What? So the OVA assumes that the audience has been following the manga? That’s not a very good way of doing things. Besides it practically skips over a lot of material (Kyoto trip, stopping the arranged marriage, Mikoto’s relationship issues, etc) The manga actually has a fair amount of seriousness thrown in along with the comedy, and with the last series being the slapstick fare that it was this might throw the people who only saw the anime.

Though in defense, if you’re buying the OVA’s I guess it’s a safe bet you’ve got all the manga.

    Wererat42
  23. @wereat 42

i agree… all those who have been watching the anime better prepare for a shock…

there’s a big gap from the end of the second season to the third (because it’s supposed to be the next-to-last episode… but still… there’s a gap…) and it would really help if you read the manga (start from 195… that’s one of the big details missed…)

    Kakashi_Crusade
  24. The pictures looks cool, but i don’t like that they are jumping several chapters from the manga and practically they are showing the last chapters of the series, i really hoped to see the third term animated in at least 25 chapters.

I hope they don’t do others mistake like this one in the future, with school rumble z.

    Bakyo
  25. I have to say that I agree, I was disappointed with the out come of the manga and now this OVA. I thought OVA were supposed to be done better than this, but there’s always the Tenchi Muyo OVA that’ll never have an end.

    tacdo
  26. well even though it skipped alot i read the manga so im pretty much ok with it ^_^ i think it was great though, school rumble is the best! im lookin forward to the next ova but it ain’t coming soon like i want it to T_T man karusuma is so hot~ xD

    Sue
  27. I am really angry!

I wanted to enjoy a whole third season of School Rumble, but . . . WHAT’S THIS?!?! It’s just the last two episodes and they aren’t even doing episodes 1-24??? I’m really P.O.ed/

When I heard there was going to a be a third season (Not to mention the scenes they showed off about a school semester trip) I was leaping in joy, but now . . . now I feel violated.

    ncyphe
  28. Enough, I still don’t know why the whole internet is thinking Ep1-24 will not be produced.
(They even showed scenes from those in the first few minutes, geeze.)
This Ep 25, is an OVA, but it is also the original Episode 25.
So in other words, they just used the Ep.25 of San Gakki as OVA, for promotional purposes.
(OVA does not have to be the first Ep or whatever, remember the last SR OVAs having absolutely no chronological order)

    Smith
  29. Oh and:
Whoever did not read the manga is seriously, seriously not recommended to watch this, unless he/she wants death and decay.
This should be a public call, since this is the fattest spoiler OVA in the universe imo.

    Smith
  30. From what I can see no one has officially announced the airing of the 3rd season, however no one has has given proof to counter it. Only the production and promos of the 3rd season which was released back in Feb/Mar.

The only info I dug up as official of the past few days was:
2 OVA’s and as we know the first one was the 25th Episode properly corresponding with the order. The opening shows footage from the series, but the so did the promo. Which there was more animated that takes place earlier… even if it was a little it is prior to the final chapters.

From what I can tell it could be a big setup seeing the 2nd release of the OVA 2008-09-17 corresponds to the winter releases. The first season aired: 2004-10-05 to 2005-03-29. I could only hope the 2nd OVA is not the rumored 26th Episode but possibly the 1st or a separate OVA all together to mess with fans. It could also be a treat for the manga readers out there to show you the end in a different fashion, even if the show will air a full run of 1-26. There are several anime’s that have had alternate endings or changes that fans were upset with anyway.

In short I wouldn’t conclude as of yet that San Gakki isn’t going to air, seeing I haven’t had proof saying otherwise. Also for pure Anime fans out there, stick with patience. We all know that for multi-season releases you get a long 3 – 5 year haul. If it goes with time line I’d say wait “another year” before viewing this. I still hope the third season airs, however releases like this always bother me as well. Wish for the best, but plan for the worst.

    Lil Ed
  31. I doubt there will be a full third season. And just because they showed scenes doesnt mean that there were prefabbed stuff. Most scenes in movie trailers are never even should in a movie at all, or even as deleted scenes.

Anyway, I read the manga, but I still wanted to see it as an anime because I love the fast action humor and also the romantic scenes animated. It makes it more intense, but alas, that won’t happen.

Let’s just hope that the next part of the manga doesn’t shaft us like the anime has.

    Raipier
  32. Sorry, you guys are retarded to believe things basing on absolutely nothing.
There is not even a reasonable argument you can give to show that the third season is not going to air.

    Smith
  33. What i heard from school rumble publishers or w/e they are called is that is they make more episodes theyl sell them with manga so they said something like this -> Manga + 2 Third semester animes and if they will agree on that theyl cut manga by small chapters and sell them each manga with new 2 animes thats what they said that they have in mind. Probly like 40 chapters + 2 anime or something like that not sure my self all they said was that they are thinking of cutting manga and selling it with anime. Thats all i head so far abaut other episodes ;/

  34. I am an avid, avid fan of the SR anime. I read a little bit of the beginning of the manga but not the middle or end.
I’ve been waiting every day since the end of season 2 for a third term, and was ecstatic when I heard about the OVA.

unfortunately I was extremely disappointed (and I’m not an incredibly critical anime watcher)
for one thing, I felt like I was dumped in the middle of the series, even though I had watched all the episodes several times, for another thing it seemed like the animators cut a lot of corners which I would let slide, except if they have a year to do it, they should at least do it right.

can someone please tell me which chapters in the manga I should read to catch up between the end of season 2 and now?

    Mind over Matter
  35. this is very exciting. When you start watching the first episode you think, wow we are finally going to end this. At the end of the episode you think, we get 2 episodes which fast forward the show you know and love. So many things change between season 2 and season 3 that you wont even understand half of it. I am pretty sure we are not gonna get 24 episodes, but i think the fans at least deserve 6-12 episodes to explain every thing. to see school rumble go out like this is really disappointing

    pest3311
  36. Most of the kings I wanted to see animated were just half-a-second scenes!! (Like the Mikoto in a wedding dress) You’re going to have to read the manga to really catch up to what’s happening in San Gakki.

    shenli
  37. *Sniff* I really want them to do episodes 1-24 of season 3!! REALLY DO! I read the manga first, so that’s why I was lookin forward to season 3 as the best season for the anime and they go ahead and rush to episodes 25-26!! WHY?! In fact, they should do episodes 1-26 all over again! School Rumble is the best anime out there! Bleach, One Piece, and Naruto have nothin on school rumble! RARRRR!!! Can’t we throw tomatoes at them until they make episodes 1-24 or something??

    harima_pwns
  38. Man…… Is school rumble season 3 gonna continue, cause im a bit dizzy after some reports that the season 3 is not gonna be continued and that they’ll just gonna release the OVA.

Is it true (need a real answer)

  39. Guys, relax a bit. As Smith and LilEd said, there is no DEFINITE proof that San Gakki will not be produced/aired. I personally am gonna download this, but retain from watching it for around a year, if by then there’s still a lack info/updates on San-Gakki then I would begin to despair. So as of now, there is hope.

    Truez
  40. men! it’s already march! we still dont get any update about SR3!!!!!!!!! i really wish they start airing it!!!!!! so that we can watch online!!!!!!!! huhuhu….i still doesnt loose hope!

    Bigz
  41. i dOnt know if i and the other expectators should be happy ’bout the school rumble san gakki ova,..
-it was not even a bit of what i expect,..it was disapointing actually,..

    mEgUmihimE_012
  42. Oye… Mikoto was going out with Aso in the second season!! Now in these two OVA, the gals have been hooking her up with Hanai…. WTF?? We are really missing something great in those first 24 eps… I’m also sure that they are never gonna release the 1-24 eps, so i’ve decided to go for the Manga!! Damn those lazy animators…..
