Kirino’s hair is supposedly dyed brown, but only in Kyousuke’s dream does it actually look like it is.

「俺が妹と恋をするわけがない」 (Ore ga Imouto to Koi wo Suru Wake ga Nai)
“There’s No Way I’m in Love with My Sister”

The model middle school student is secretly a younger sister-obsessed erotic game maniac! In actuality, it’s not quite that bad, but it sure sounds more interesting when I say she poses for pictures to earn money for feeding her addiction. It’s all about taking stuff out of context. As mentioned in the Fall 2010 Preview, we have the story about 17-year old high school student Kousaka Kyousuke (Nakamura Yuuichi), who hasn’t gotten along with his 14-year old sister Kirino (Taketatsu Ayana) for years now. However, all of that changes in very awkward ways when he stumbles upon her love for ages 18+ porn games. If that weren’t bad enough, they also happen to be the sister complex (siscon) incest variety, where it’s all about older brothers having their way with their little sisters. Hilarity ensues when Kirino decides to reveal her hidden stash to Kyousuke in belief that he would understand her “hobby” and not look down upon her because of it. It was at that point that I respected Kyousuke for taking the benevolent approach, yet laughed at him for the hole he just jumped into.

Pedophilia and incest notwithstanding, Kirino does have the tsundere makings of a girl who someone in Kyousuke’s shoes may be wishing wasn’t blood-related. She sure gives pretty damn misleading signs with the way she mounts him in his sleep, slaps him, and tells him to keep his voice down, which probably had everyone and their moms thinking she wanted a late-night “quickie”. If not that, then the fetish that her eroge of choice caters towards is more than enough for Kyousuke to think that she wants to get into his pants and let him have his way with her. From everyone’s perspective except hers, it sure looked like her secret stash of PC games and anime DVDs weren’t the only things that came out of the closet, especially when she crept up on Kyousuke seeking approval. Incidentally, the beauty of this series (and what’s probably going to turn Kyousuke into a full-fledged siscon) is that Kirino isn’t even aware of the misunderstandings her hobby is causing. And to think, she even has the audacity to call him a pervert for asking her if there’s any deeper meaning to her hopeless obsession with cute younger sisters. It’s unfortunate for Kyousuke, but hilarious for me because I can take enjoyment from the fact that I’m not in his shoes. If I were, I probably would’ve killed myself already from facepalming too hard.

On top of the crisp animation that I’ve come to expect from AIC, this adaptation doesn’t disappoint in terms of cuter character designs than the manga and comedic material that just works. Kirino’s forcible way of dragging Kyousuke into her hobby for a “supposed” objective opinion should prove to be the driving factor from hereon in, plus keeping her hobby a secret from their no-nonsense policeman father Daisuke (Tachiki Fumihiko) and mother Yoshino (Watanabe Akeno). There’s also the normal girl from Kyousuke class, Tamura Manami (Satou Satomi), who clearly has a crush on him, as well as some otaku friends of Kirino that will be showing up. As this was only a setup episode of sorts, I’m expecting the laughs to be even better in the coming weeks. This premiere did have its moments though. See below for some of my favorites.

Kirino looks pretty cute form this still, but comes off as a snob with the way she ignores Kyousuke.

The secret is out because Kyousuke forgot to put the barley tea back into the fridge. Stardust Witch Meruru!

So this is what it feels like to be framed with incestuous porn.

Gotta love how Kyousuke knew his mother would jump to conclusions. Even better was the way he lured out the true culprit at the dinner table.

Now THIS is what you call an offering.

“Take your porn and leave! Throw it out if you claim it’s not yours.”

Someone should tell Ayana that she’s not playing Ako from kiss x sis in this series…

…regardless of whether or not Kirino owns the kiss x sis DVD box set.

I’m going to take a wild stab and say that one of Cross Days’ endings involves a boat.

It’s like she’s opening a DVD porn shop on the side of the street.

Those eyes… are not normal. See what Cross Days caused?

I guess it’s no secret how pedophilia develops. Fashion magazines with underage girls!

I don’t know if Kyousuke was looking at Kirino’s eyes or about 30cm below, but I know where I was. It was her eyes of course!

Kyousuke looks to us for agreement on how messed up his sister is. Yes Kirino, people do think you have a brother complex!

Wake up slap #2 and Kyousuke’s “first time”… (with an eroge).

To think she’d get upset over Kyousuke kicking Shiori-chan off the bed. Maybe he wants to train her into a masochist Kirino! Ever thought of that!?

So I’m thinking she just wants nonjudgemental friends… who are into incestuous porn.

Preview & End Card

Boo, preview-less previews. At least there was a nice end card.

Do you have a younger sister? Or maybe a older sister? If no, you have no IDEA how this is absolutely wrong in every single way possible. I just want to ask how many people have younger sisters. Whats your perspective of this show? What about older sister on a perspective in this show?

    1. I got two younger they are both EVIL, had a older cousin that used to live a floor below, wasn’t too bad, then she hit puberty and hell broke loose, my sisters took after her.

      Dthiswhtuseek
    2. You should watch it before hand, it’s just moe, there isn’t any boundary stilt-walking like Kiss X Sis persay, if you ask me the title can be interpreted as ‘misleading’, since the brother isn’t showing symptoms of a sis-complex or pervesion in general. another take is exhibit a.

Exhibit A) Bakemonogatari quote – Araragi: “No, sis-complexes are only fantasies of those who don’t have a younger sister.”

(i’ve got a younger sister too, same age/stature as the heroine, and…yeah..sorry, just no. i’m not offended by the show because little sisters are borderline annoying and family after all.)

      Dawn
    3. I don’t have a younger sister, but I do have an older one. I’ve never seen my own sister as anything more than a sibling, but I can still get a good laugh out of the story here. It’s just an anime after all. Besides, I’m not in Kyousuke’s shoes, so I don’t see Kirino as a sister.

    4. I’ve got an imouto around the same age as Kirino. She ignores me and never lets me talk to her friends and….etc.So I understand Kyosuke’s feelings of being mistreated quite well.I laughed when Kirino claimed that sisters don’t love their older brothers in real life, since it reminded me of my situation lol.Oh the irony.

      GodKnows
    5. I have a younger sister as well. Not by much though. We were raised to love one another and be close. So currently, we live alone together. Funny how that whole ordeal turned out. But yeah, never really thought of my younger sister in that way. She’s not cute at all. xD

Like Kirino says, don’t mix it.

    6. Well I am a younger sister, in particular one with an older brother, yet I don’t find this show to be offensive at all. From my view the focus is more on the comedic part of Kyousuke’s situation.

I think its just better to not take shows like this too seriously. There’s no use putting it into a real-life context and getting all weirded out by it when thats not what the show is set out to do.

      kuripuri
    7. People who have blood related younger sisters will most likely never think of them in that way, but a non blood related / adopted younger sis could be a different story.

Human Society just made it that way.

      Hagiri
      1. @Hagiri
Lol. I have an older brother and we aren’t blood related in any way (being that we were adopted from separate families). I can’t say that I’m attracted to him at all.

        @Divine
        I’m liking the new layout.
        No complaints.

    8. I have a younger sister and a few younger cousins. All adorable until they hit later years in high school…Then total 180 and we all grew distant. Not that I mind that much, we all live different lives now and then. No attraction whatsoever since I still see them as possible annoying brats with no respect to their elders.
So in a sense, I do feel what Kyousuke is going through.

      Shinjiro
    9. well, got 2 sisters, one 2 years younger than me, second 13 years younger… the older is a drinking hard metallica fangirl, but we are on the same wavelengths regarding much of the world, she loves some anime, but generally has no time for extensive anime watching
the younger one is studying philosophy now (she has been drawing manga about cute versions of historic philosphers doing fun things) and is complete otaku, down to playing j-rpgs (she’s not into eroges though, and luckily, not into incest) – she is watching the show together right now with me and we have lulz all the way
my best memory with her is when she borrowed Agent Aika to our dad who asked for something spicy for night watching 😛

      ewok40k
    10. I’m not really offended by this show either. In fact, it made me laugh a great deal. I just wanted to know some views and outlooks on what made it so popular, or how its one the most anticipated show out there. You could say that this is just out of random curiosity (After all, its the name of the site!)

As for me. I have an older sister. I find this hilarious and funny, yet I don’t actually hate my sister in real life, BUT I’m not in any way near the world of incest. I do say though, if this gravitates towards incest, it’ll just ruin the comedy. We already seem to have a show that is like that coming up! *wink wink “Yosuga no Sora”

      1. No, the story is more about how they begin to trust each other and they relationship goes better. Until now in the manga they haven’t go into an incestuous relation and it doesn’t seems to go in that way, at least not at the rate of aki-sora. I prefer this one, story is far better and the characters are better developed, and sex isn’t used to justify things.

        lol
    11. I’ve got a sister who’s two years younger than I, who’s also the middle child in our family. I think this show’s bang on when it comes to how younger sisters act with regards to their family, completely ignoring us, being distant, minus the eroge part of course. My sister’s completely cold to us, depending on the mood though. But being the older sister I’ve gotta say, having a younger brother is FAR worse than a younger sister. >_>

      frice
    12. I have both younger and older sis, I stuck at middle but still I never thought of them as anything but siblings, I don’t even wanna imagine anything else. But anime is anime, nothing but fiction so watching this does nothing but making me laugh nothing more, nothing less.

      mike
    13. i have two imouto’s and for me they’re just plain annoying at home…(rivals at PC usage and all)

I don’t really believe this is something like a serious sis-com relationship is gonna develop here…unless they’re not blood related.

      ufobaby
  2. Ugh the one i watched had bad sound quality gotta re-watch to enjoy awesomeness, though i hope there won’t be any adverse affects for adding the “first time” scene at the end don’t want a anime original ending haven’t had too many good experiences with those.

    Dthiswhtuseek
  3. I enjoy this style of writing a bit more, with comments on pictures without having to click on the links. Also, it helps that the comments that came with it were funny. I didn’t even noticed the Sis x Sis box set, but I did notice the Nintendo CS.

  4. Hahaha.

“What the hell are you doing in my bed, get out! -kick-”

    “waaa…onii-chan, im sorry T_T”

He passed the perversion test, good job Kyousuke.

(BTW, nice catch on Cross Days Divine–bad ending haunts the screen cap. hilarious.)
This and Bakuman are my favorites. Can’t wait til The World God Only Knows, also.

    Dawn
      1. haha i read you– i can’t make it out from when I watched it, but i wouldn’t be surprised if most if not all of them were parodies of real life eroge-counterparts.

(I’ve read my share of VN, but…i wouldn’t recognize any of the sis-con variety regardless ~.~)

        Dawn
      2. I’m no expert, but when I saw the games I thought they looked real. And lo and behold, in the credits there are a listing “Game Package Help” (roughly) and listed under that is a couple of companies that make the games Kirino likes. Only companies I recognized was feng and Circus.

        Greg
  5. Nice ep, I actually liked it more than I thought I would. I just thought all it had going for it was it was an otaku siscon fetish thing, but I realized the quality of the animation, writing, and humor really make this show shine.

    exia
  6. “I don’t know if Kyousuke was looking at Kirino’s eyes or about 30cm below, but I know where I was. It was her eyes of course!”

No, it was not Kyousuke looking down. It was the viewers.

    sadakups
    1. Are you serious? I thought the character design in the manga was way off.

The character design for the anime basically follows that of the novel illustrations and is thus closer to the original.

In fact, Wikipedia Japan reveals that novel illustrator Kanzaki Hiro and character designer for the anime Oda Hiroyuki are actually one and the same person, he is credited twice here using his two aliases for some reason. He probably wants to distinguish himself professionally in different fields, using one alias as an illustrator and another as an animator.

    1. that’s not entirely true – cross days is like a retelling of school days. It actually has no death routes – rather, they have a trap heroine (hero?) instead that Makoto can go gay with. I think hes actually the main protagonist for cross days… i’ll get around to playing it someday, its already on my computer waiting to be played

      Kiseki
  7. Wait, this is Oreimo? What a misleading shortname; had no idea what it was when people kept referring to it. Or I’m just way out of the loop

Heh, this. Good stuff, I’ll probably keep up with it.

    Vsin
  8. As soon as I saw the part where she rips open the “street side porn shop” I paused and thought – “Oh lord the otakus are going to have a field day with this one…”
(Oh lord…now that I think about it even I knew what most of the boxes were making a reference too. I’m just waiting to see this new Mintendu CS and Final SYSTER IV is…oh let the imagination run wild with this series…phew…phew…gone…)

I’ll admit, this season has had some really rather pleasant surprises in terms of first showings. Also I really like your new style of blogging Divine, the screencaps are funny as hell and you always seem to know what the viewers are all thinking…”30cm below…” indeed…bwuahaha xD

    akizuki09
  9. Yep~ Winner.

There’e a lot of good comedy coming out this season! I wonder if there are more funny shows airing.. Wow. I haven’t laughed so much in a day. :]

Diggin’ the post style too. It’s fun to read. ^^

  10. I think I like the old layout better. Just so used to seeing the screen caps at the top. But I guess this has it’s merits as well such as allowing you to put comments right under them. Didn’t one of your other writers use a similar format like this a loooooooong time ago?

Anyway, this show definitely delivered in the laughs department.

“…regardless of whether or not Kirino owns the kiss x sis DVD box set.”

    It says “sis x sis”.

Oh and she must really like the “_____ Days” series because she owns 2 copies of the school days visual novel.

  11. Love the Layout wider seems a lot better, I didn’t think I’d fall for the sismance story but the comedy is great, also the kissxsis referance ^^ I think all I really needed to hear is Fumihiko Tachiki say “Die” and know the boundaries enough to close my eyes if Daisuke got a hint of the situation.

    Bluance
  12. Loved this first ep. But I just don’t see this in a very “incest-y” way. The hints are obviously there, but I don’t get the “Kirino wants to sleep with her brother!” vibe… (I’m actually pretty glad about this…)
And yeah, she has lots of eroge, but there is something to be said about “not mixing the 2D with the 3D.” I mean, I enjoy watching things in anime that would NEVER happen in my real life BECAUSE they would never happen in my real life. Anyone who is watching a show titled “My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute” is in a somewhat similar situation as Kirino is with her siscon eroge, and how many of us want to go and “make love” with our family members? I see the strong likely-hood that Kirino doesn’t have a brother complex at all, no matter how much it’s hinted at in this story (that needs a fanbase after all you know.)

    innerchihiro
  13. yeah it’s the only great show i’m gonna watch this season besides BLEACH! hail ayana-chan! haha…

does anybody find similarity in kyosuke’s father and kenpachi? no, especially the “Die” part:

    it’s just a little too alike…

waiting for more episodes to come~

  14. Kirino is cute as hell, and crazy as hell, but I can’t wait for Kuroneko(black cat) showing up next week. I bet she’s gonna be very popular here, maybe as popular as or even possibly more popular than Kirino down the road.

    U Doh
  15. LOL at Tachiki Fumihiko playing Kyousuke and Kirino’s dad. Just like in Nogizaka Haruka, he just fits in nicely in the role of “strict dads with an otaku-child problem”.

Nakamura feels right at home with his Tomoya voice, while I think I still haven’t got off my K-ON withdrawal symptoms when I hear Ayana as Kirino and Satomi as Manami, I still think of them as Azu-nyan and Ricchan. (Satomi’s English turns out to be not too bad, she probably picked up a few words when she was interviewed by blogger Danny Choo. XD )

    Kinny Riddle
  16. Upon playing back in slow motion, some of the games I recognize besides Cross Days in Kirino’s eroge collection includes:

    Akane iro Somaru Saka
    Summer Days
    School Days
    Sakura Sakura
    D.C. II

In fact, it seems she keeps more than one copy of each of the above in that huge pile of boxes.

    Kinny Riddle
  17. There’s no OP and ED animation this week, though the OP was played in the credits.

Months ago, AIC has asked fans to contribute songs for their ED, as they’ll be using one different song per episode after this one. We’ll see if they keep to their word.

    Kinny Riddle
  18. DAMN IT!! i almost died with AZU-NYAN–ah no–KIRINO’s MOENESS!! can i keep her??!!–*shot*

Anyway, i really liked how the two got to interact quite nicely (at long last) just because of that eroge game..LOL.. kyousuke seemed to be a responsible older bro now that he’s somewhat given the chance..i’m only praying that this won’t turn out like kiss x sis..XPP ugghh.

KIRINO-NYAN~ FTW!!! (satomi’s voice is unlikable here for some reason, maybe bec. she fits character’s like ritsu more? I WANT THAT DEEPER VOICE OF HERS!!)

    keiOnDaisuki
  19. Yay! Very good first episode, just what I remembered from reading part of the novels/manga. Getting slapped twice and then kicked out of a chair for choosing the best answer was a bit much, but downright funny.

Hearing Ayana in her angry voice is really entertaining, especially in Trinity Universe and MM!

    fall3nbs
  20. this is a fine one so far
it was pretty clear that kirino isnt in love with him yet, im hopping that kyousuke is gonna fall in love first before kirino

it was funny when he chose the kick the little sis out of bed, such a brutal guy but I sometimes choose similar actions like that just to see what might happen
note: I dont have any eroge/hentai games, I meant choices like RPG ones

    amado
    1. I don’t think you got the memo. There won’t be any incest love. The story is about creating a normal Brother-sister relationship from an estranged one using her hobby as a driving factor.

      paparaharaha
  21. “Those eyes… are not normal. See what Cross Days caused?”

    rofl

This was actually funnier than what I was expecting. As long as they cross any boundaries, I’m sure this will continue to give some nice laughs.

    Flare
  22. “I probably would’ve killed myself already from facepalming too hard” Thanks D. That made me chuckle right off.
Imouto’s first episode was sweet. Superb animation and art, funny (and possibly even) awkward story and I’d want to see where it leads to. My OMFG signals were raised so many times only to have me LOL/sigh in relief at the comic results. The cast did a good job. Let’s hope everything stays up to par for the rest of the season!
D, I really do like this new format. I don’t know how the rest of the gang feels now but definitely getting used to it.

    Shinjiro
  23. I’ve been living forcyhis day to come: ever since I listened to the drama cd, I knew I’m gonna love this series. The seiyuus were too fitting for these characters; especially Nakamara Yuuichi playing Kyosuke; it’s like his character was made for him.

    Karis
  24. I’m not into (read: hate) the kind of relationships seen in the games the sister plays (and I really, really hope this doesn’t turn out that way) but I did enjoy the episode.
Especially the school scene where the brother is talking to that normal girl. I thought their conversation was really funny and I really like the girls ‘see you tomorrow’. I hope there’s more of her in the series.

    stefkov
  25. @Kelfi…
I have a year younger (25) than me sister (same mother and father), ten years younger than me (16) sister (my father’s children from another woman),thirteen years younger (13) than me sister (my father’s daughter from another woman), eighteen years younger than me sister (8) (my father’s daughter from another woman)

I’m close to my first sister until we went separate ways in high school. From shy and softspoken turned into a dangerous beauty. To be honest, we almost did something taboo for being curious and don’t have the right mind set back then. I met my two sisters whenever my father comes to our house to get my sister for having a lunch/dinner outside. I became close to my third sister when I was in college, since her mother left her daughter in my first sister’s care occasionally when she’s busy. My third sister have a different feeling towards me, good thing she’s young back then so I went outside for a walk while they watch Cartoon Network.

Opinion for this anime is indeed a blessing in disguise cause most of brothers out there don’t know the true nature of our sisters.

    arigatou
  26. Hmm. Serious opinions here. First episode definitely did not live up to expectations.
Other than Kirino and her cutie-tsundere act(how does she even have so make up that every scene shows her red cheecks?), I found Yuichi Nakamura acting’s for the elder bro much more interesting. Who in the right mind will slap your elder bro in his sleep in the middle of the night? The only few interesting points i really wonder why she dyed her hair brown(i think she look better in black, maybe just to secure that modelling job) and what eroges she had at her disposal.
Production quality wise – normal, especially from AIC. I have seen better for AIC’s productions in Campanella’s first episode.
Overall – major dissappointment for me.
    Now flames away.

    Joker_Extreme
    1. I’d glad I didn’t come in with expectations. I also noticed her blushing a lot, but I found it cute. I don’t really focus on (or can’t notice) production quality unless I’m watching it side by side :/ (I decided to take a look at some of the old performances in k-on and man, the first season looks like crap).

No one should flame you for having your own opinion, especially when you express it in full sentences :p

  27. the only thing that bothers me about this show so far is that nobody seems to care that a middle-schooler is playing PORN games… i kept waiting for the “you’re too young/can’t legally own these games!” moment and it never came. why bother labeling anything R18+ if nobody bats an eye when a 14-year-old buys it?

    diet otaku
    1. I think Kousuke did point out that fact in the novel, so expect him to say something about it if he hasn’t already.

In fact, later on in the story, Kirino would even send Kousuke queuing up in Akihabara in midnight for the latest eroge to be released, as she couldn’t buy it herself due to her being underage. lol

      Kinny Riddle
  28. Question to the novel readers out there, there will be a new character not yet shown in the anime, named

    Show Spoiler ▼

  29. Oreimo is living up to my expectations. The first episode was really a joy to watch, with AIC’s high quality animation and the hilariously funny moments of Kyousuke finding out his little sister is an imouto-otaku. Looking forward to seeing more of this, since Kirino is adorable.

    akani
  30. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

This is Hilarious! I had a good LOL while watching the series! 😀

but on the other note, a girl imouto whose an imouto-porn game otaku wants to play imouto-porn with his Niichan?? I’m sensing a tsundere imouto with brocom with his Niichan…

good thing niichan doesn’t raise a single flag to his imouto this episode…who knows where this would lead though…gonna watch out for more laughs in the next episodes! 😀

    ufobaby
  31. It was explained in the middle of the episode that she always role play the character of the ‘big brother’ in the ergo games. ie. She IS playing the typical game role that the consumer of this particular subtype of ergo games plays.

    BigFire
  32. rofl this is funny shit!!! I like it already lol

    Btw, I just want to ask if anyone here played eroge/visual novel before?? coz for me I’ve played some before such as Little Busters! EX, Chaos Head, Akane iro no Somaru etc but, some of them are fun to play (due to character development/plot etc…) however majoirty are really BORING to play IMO… I mean its same shit unless its something special or “different” from other games…but I’ll rather watch anime or read manga of that game -_-;;

    What do you guys think??

    chococya96
    1. Yeah, I actually played ‘Yosuga no sora’ which has an anime coming out soon. I didn’t really reckon much to it but maybe the show will be better, obviously the 18+ scenes will be left out……. I think?

      Smell The Coffee!
    2. well… it really depends on what kind of game you play… if it is like Chaos Head, Umineko no Naku Koro ni (neither of which I have finished, unfortunately due to my insufficiency in Japanese…) or even Bladr Sky series (an awesome story despite it is eroge), then it is ok and even cool because plot is what moves them forward… but if you are purely into eroge game, then I assume it will be boring…

      jrj
      1. There are obviously varying quality, but some games like Tsukihime or Fate Stay Night are of rather high quality and have a lot of story in them. But it’s rather telling when you can make a complete anime out of one path of a game.

        Znail
  33. nice review here… I love the new format, very befitting 🙂

at first I had lots of doubts about this one… but the first episode just turn out to be much better than I have expected 🙂 Especially toward the end… so funny 🙂

Love the kicking sister out of the bed choice… GJ there…

Lol at Cross days and SisxSis…

    jrj
  34. I sense red alert’s every where, but the mood, voice acting and funny brother character makes it amazingly funny. Lol I liked it when the sister said ” like I said. It’s ~SOOOOOOOO~ cute.” Sounded like she was going to die for a second there.

    MrBrownSound
  35. My gosh, that was one of the most awkward things I’ve ever watched. XD I don’t know what the writers were building up to here; is it going to be a rehash of this same type of awkwardness? Are they going to wean Kirino away from that habit? Are they going to turn this into a kind of incestuous relationship? It’s hard to tell.

    hoiut
  36. Read and found the novels quite enjoyable. Usually that signifies that I won’t like the anime too much. But this is an exception. Very well done by the animators.

And for those who are pondering where the story’s going, just wait and relax. It’s comedy.

  37. THE original is the novel version and the manga version is an adoption. And it’s no wonder this anime version has different character design from the manga version and on the other hand, looks exactly the same as novel illustration. The character designer of this anime version and the illustrator of the novel one are actually the very same person, just with different pen names.

    U Doh
  38. I’ve got a younger sister. I’d die for her if I must.
