「ラジコンじゃなイカ!?」 (Rajikon Janai ka!?)
“Isn’t That Remote-Controlled!?”

Sheer laughs aren’t always the focus of Ika Musume and this week reminds us of just that with some teary-eyed melodrama. I gather just about everyone anticipated that Ika would end up breaking Takeru’s new remote-controlled car, but I don’t know if the same could be said about Ika sincerely repenting for it. Kudos to Takeru for being the better person and not holding it against her, even though he ended up making her feel worse by doing so. The same goes for Eiko for recruiting the three idiotic scientists to fix the car and offering Ika for a day so that she can really make it up to Takeru. Those geeks just had to use an M.I.T. button for the new functionality they added, though I have to admit the DeLorean-like transformation was pretty cool. I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on one of those babies.

「七夕じゃなイカ!?」 (Tanabata Janai ka!?)
“Isn’t It Tanabata!?”

Ah Tanabata, the Japanese star festival that originated from the Chinese (one of many). This was easily the funniest skit for me, as I found Martin’s disrespectful “Where’s the wish-granting bamboo?” line pretty hilarious. I just love how Eiko hit them with the science vs. religious bat and the three idiots didn’t give a damn. Eiko’s somber moment of seriousness wasn’t too shabby either, simply because Ika hit a soft spot of hers. Other than that, there was plenty of randomly inserted silliness throughout: Kiyomi wishing for bigger boobs, Sanae explaining the festival’s origins that saw one of the few delusions where Ika embraces her, and Ika getting her priorities straight in the end on what to wish for. What caught my attention the most was the brief flashback about Eiko’s creepy dolls, Johnny and Depp, which reminded me of the creepy yet really well-scripted skit from the first season. Mmm, that was such a good skit.

「一人遊びしなイカ!?」 (Hitori Asobi Shinai ka!?)
“Won’t You Play Alone!?”

Ika’s childish and easily amused personality is always fun to watch, especially when she owns herself in the face. I realize this is no Mitsudomoe, but I wouldn’t mind seeing more slapstick moments like that. I’ve always said the best kind of “ownage” is self-ownage, and that’s particularly true when it comes to our favorite squid girl. The rest of the skit wasn’t overly humorous, but as usual, had that naive Ika charm to it. Takeru never ceases to amaze me with how considerate and respectful of Ika he is either.

* The RC car is featured in the ending sequence this week.
* Note: Ika Musume will be on break again next week so that the other broadcast stations can finally catch up.

  1. So it was interesting to note that calling the scientists the “three stooges” in the previous awful Let’s Learn English sketch was apparently the literal translation of “san-baka.” I always thought it just meant “three idiots”…

  2. Each skit was so funny, and yet had that Ika Musume sadness feel to them… It’s like if this episode brought me the same amount of joy and sadness, cancelling it each other or something.
Especially Eiko wishing to pass, I’m like that too right now…

Takeru is a sort of model child generally speaking, but there’s also the fact that his osananajimi relationship with Ika is showing serious signs of development. Give them a couple of years and things are going to get complicated.

    1. Are you talking about the blonde girl in white dress on the top? That’s Saber Lily, an alternate outfit for Saber (Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Zero) from the video game, Fate/Unlimited Codes.

  4. Wow Ika really went against the standard anime type there. Would have expected her to hem and haw/finf excuses/etc on breaking the car but she came out truthfully. Ika 1, Other anime kids 0. When they pressed the MIT button, it looked a lot like the old MASK cartoon with vehicles transforming.

The other 2 parts were funny in fits and starts especially how everyone was wishing for things that Ika probably wouldn’t like. The ant chapter was quite good. There are so many things you can do for fun but when we grow older, we can’t do it because its not “adult-like”.
