This week, we find how Rin dies… and it’s at the hands of Kakashi? What? I don’t know about you, but that certainly wasn’t what I was expecting. I mean, the rest of the chapter turned out exactly was predicted in terms of Obito not arriving until there was nothing he could do… but wow, if Kakashi really was responsible for Rin’s death, I could see why Obito’d go nuts afterwards.

In the end, while it wasn’t that great of a twist in terms of the timing of Obito’s arrival, you do have to say that it’s a pretty clever maneuver on Madara’s part, because it certainly looks like he had a part in this… whether in delaying Obito just enough or perhaps even being the one responsible for the situation Kakashi and Rin are in. It’s a bit far fetched considering the Zetsu clone’s state at the moment, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were the ones responsible for attacking Kakashi and Rin, then cloned themselves to look like Rin or something of the sort, leading to this sequence of events. Heck, it’s possible they cloned Kakashi instead too.

And last but not least, there’s always the chance it was one other scenario too—one hinted at in the chapter itself. Noting how Zetsu was saying it might be better for him to take over when fighting and the fact that Obito saw a vision of Rin being killed moments after Zetsu started taking over… it’s highly probable he’s the one that killed her in the first place, using Obito’s body and conjuring up some illusion for him to see. Though, when you consider the fact that we still haven’t found out how Kakashi acquired his Mangekyo Sharingan yet… suddenly the previous scenario becomes much more likely.

But hey, leave it to Kishimoto to still have some tricks up his sleeve. Sadly, it’ll be another week’s wait before we get some (if any) confirmation on what happens though, so we’ll see what happens then.

    1. It’s the only way I see Obito obtaining it at this point, in which Kakashi gains it as well. Similar to how there is a connection between Kakashi’s vision through Obito’s right eye effecting Obito’s own vision, as seen in this chapter.

    2. Obito could always have Madara make him an imaginary friend during all the years he spends holed up being an anti-social little bitch….

Then once he kills that friend……That would explain how Kakashi mysteriously discovered his Mangekyou during the timeskip! Because Obito slaughtered his imaginary best friend in his man hole of OMGTAKEOVERTHEWORLDTOMORROWPLSPLSPLSPLSPLS.

    3. Madara used a Zetsu clone and took control of Kakashi using a powerful Genjutsu =)

Stupid Stupid Obito. I really feel for the guy. He can’t handle reality any more and what’s to escape in the infinite tsukiyomi. Live in a dream world where he can be reunited with Rin. Kinda like the Movie “Brazil.” The only escape is insanity :'(

  1. Yeah, I’m suspecting it too Nadester. I also smell Madara’s influence a little bit myself, even if it could just be overthinking. But he could have lied about needing a second Sharingan to Obito just so he could do what he wanted when he needed him.

      1. Well, considering Madara was probably controlling the 4th Mizukage at the time, he could’ve simply used his Zetsu to find intel on Obito’s friends, then organize some Mist Ninja to go on a mission that puts the Rin and Kakashi in danger. At that time, he would have the Zetsu (who Obito IDIOTICALLY TRUSTED) tell Obito about how they were in trouble and then have him come in right at the point one or both of them died. Madara would hope that, even though this was a forced scenario, that this would show Obito that this world needs to be mind controlled in order to be at peace.

So in the end, Obito’s just a gullible tool.

  2. Obito saw a vision of Rin being killed moments after Zetsu started taking over

See, I thought it was a premonition vision or something like that. But then you realize it’s from Kakashi’s point-of-view. So I think he was just seeing the event take place from Kakashi’s left eye. You know, the one that is actually Obito’s?

    1. Same.

I’m thinking since they were fighting Hidden Mist ninjas, Kakashi was confused and in his desperate attempts to fight the ninjas to protect Rin (who probably were using mist techniques given all that mist in the background), he accidentally hit her with that strike. His inexperience with the sharingan may have contributed to this as he could have been relying on it solely to battle consider his right eye was closed. That would explain him suddenly crying on the last panel, probably JUST realizing what he had done when she said his name.

So basically, tragedy, he was trying to protect Rin but ended up hurting her instead.

Either way, it’s raining and depressing outside and this chapter makes it even worse. Did she even get a chance to confess to him? (I raged when they showed a supposed death scene for Hinata right after she confesses).

Damn it all, being accidentally killed by the love of your life who just wanted to protect you is so depressing.

  3. Kakashi : Good bye Rin, I had no choice.. This was the only way for me to obtain the Mangekyou Sharingan, by killing you, my best friend.

Rin : I understand, use that power to protect the village.. Do what obito couldn’t do, protect the ones that you love.

Obito cried, raged and lose consciousness.

    Meanwhile, in another dimension..

    A wild creature appeared.

/人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\ : would you like to make a contract with me? I’ll give you back your life and power.

Rin : Yes, i want to join my friends. Please !!

Mahou Shoujo Rin was born and now living in the shadows observing both kakashi and obito, catch her appearing at the war after the flashback is over XD

  4. Oh no! That one girl who never did anything but heal and get kidnapped in a couple flashback chapters died! She was such a strong character and left such an impression! How will the story continue without her?!

    1. So this character we’ve barely seen at all who has no personality and no major contributions to the story while being alive is supposed to be the whole reason the story started in the first place?

      GENIUS.

      1. At this point of the story, having a flashback about someone that no one of us gives a single fuck for, and that isn’t even remotely related to the main character, Sasu–*cough* I mean Naruto, is stupid period.

Hopefully, he will blaze through this quickly and go back to the fights.

      2. But considering she’s the cause of all this, we need to know her in order for the motivations to actually make sense. They did this properly with the other villains flashbacks (Yahiko in Pain’s flashback, Sasori’s parents in Sasori’s, Gaara’s uncle and father in his) and the heroes (Tsunade’s boyfriend and brother, Neji’s father). In each of those, we were given perfectly good reason to care about these flashback characters and why they motivated these characters to act how they did when they had the flashback.

Need I remind you of the seven year gap between last Rin’s appearance and this one? And how she still has done to contribute to the story other than be crushed on by Obito for no reason?

  5. Although you should remember that Kakashi didn’t use Mangekyou Sharingan until Part 2.

Meaning he only first awakened/used it in the timeskip. I’m not sure if killing Rin activated it but we do know that witnessing your best friend die or something like that triggers its activation. Since both Kakashi and Obito witnessed Rin’s death, you could say they both triggered its activation. But probably neither uses it or tries to use it till much later on.

As for why Kakashi used Chidori on Rin. Well, we can only speculate. We probably won’t find out the truth in a long time. Perhaps it was planned by Madara. Perhaps not.

    1. Dude, settle down. I’m sure Kakashi had his reasons, he’s just not that kind of guy! Listen, the last thing you want to do is…

*4th Ninja starts, hundreds of thousands are dead*

      …overreact.

  7. I m surprised nobody has put a finger on it already. I saw some ppl discussing that it could be Zetsu’s who attacked Rin and Kakashi, and Madara who planned the whole thing. We know zetsu’s have the ability to make an exact replica of someone else by stealing their chakra. Is it so big a stretch to assume Kakashi was fighting cloned Rin and he killed the real one in the process?

  8. Remember in the past Kakashi give a test to Sakura about killing Naruto to save Sasuke or Sasuke killed by Kakashi. And similar situation happen in Nagato flashback with Yahiko and Konan witch end up Yahiko throw himself to a kunai hold by Nagato. Now i think this is similar to that situation.

  9. I dont think Zetsu taking over Obito has anything to do with Rin’s death, I was under the impression that what Obito saw was simply from Kakashi’s POV since he has his eye, they might be connected with his, being sharingans and all.

  10. This chapter dragged on needlessly, when it doesn’t need to since we know where this is going. Obito turning into an emo etc.

We all know the reason Kakashi did that to Rin is not because he is evil, so we can only speculate that it was all withon Madara’s plans or Rin is a spy or something. Either way, Obito is gonna go all emo over it, then flashback over.

    leokiko
  11. I have a theory about why Kakashi killed Rin: genjutsu/mind control. Not on Kakashi’s part but on Rin’s. Going back to the Gaiden arc Rin was captured and subjected to genjutsu by Rock ninja. We don’t know what exactly happened to her so it is possible for her to have been brainwashed. The fight that Zetsu saw may have originally been against Rain ninja but if you look at the terrain of the battle field it looks like rock ninja were fighting. Obito even mentions that after an explosion that he thought they were fighting Rain ninja whose jutsus traditionally don’t cause big explosions.

  12. Something is not right, this must be Madara’s doing because Kakashi has always thought his students the value of comradeships as He has
always said to Naruto, sasuke and Sakura that He will not let his comrades die and Kakashi has always regretted not protecting Rin like He
said in his final moments when He died at the hands of Pain( till He came back ). Something is definitely wrong and it is not Kakashi.

  13. I get the feeling that….

A.) Rin was under the control of the Kiri shinobi as Zetsu did mention them saying something about “guinea pigs”.

B.) It’s a white Zetsu clone shaped as Rin that was discovered by Kakashi (purposely just so Obito would see it, or by Kakashi just figuring it out)

…it also seems weird how, when asked what Minato was doing, the only answer given was that “he’s busy with another mission”, an extremely simplistic answer.

Though, I actually would have a bit of a problem with the retconning if Obito does awaken the Mangekyo immediately after this. It would mean that, given the eyes are “connected”, that Kakashi would most likely awaken it as well. So that would mean that he had the capability of using it ever since the series first started, but never ever did until against Deidara early on in Part 2…

I mean, yeah, he would still be limited in use, but even just 1 good use can be more than enough, so imagine if Kakashi was able to use it at certain times against certain enemies and how things could’ve been different.

  14. As noted in the english translation, the mist has been working on “experimental bodies.” (p.13) Most likely, in japanese, it is referring to “Jikentai” or experimental works. If that’s the case, there is a chance that the Mist was working on a way to control people’s body. Maybe a little farfetched, but I prefer this over Kakashi accidentally killing Rin because he couldn’t see. The guilt expressed in Kakashi’s eyes while stabbing Rin makes me feel like it was intentional. It is not surprising that Kakashi gained the use of Mangekyo sharingan later in his life. Maybe he didn’t know about it until later. He’s not a Uchiha after all. It might take a while to access these new powers. The whole “kill your friend to get Mangekyo” is still vague to me. How does killing anyone change your iris designs and grant you new abilities? But, this is anime. ANYTHING is possible.

Going back to the past, Obito controlled the Mizukage for quite a bit to kill off the ninjas with Kekaigenkan. Recall that Kisame recognized Obito’s face and referred to him as Mizukage. Most likely Obito was in charge of the mass slaughter in the Mist Village. Was this for revenge? Was the Mist’s Kekaigenkan user involved in Rin’s death? I want to say “yes” because it will tie everything together. If this was Kishimoto’s plan, then it was well thought out (took a while, but well done). It is not explained how Obito was able to control Mizukage. The super mind control Mangekyou sharingan was not in Obito’s or Madara’s position. It was in Itachi’s. But the Uchiha power is OP, so whatever.

    1. As a Shonen-style anime, it’s more or less just the sheer emotion from the feeling of the loss of the one closest to you (doesn’t have to exactly be a “best friend”) and all that emotion swelling out is what triggers it.

It doesn’t even have to be a death by your own hand, as we saw with Sasuke.

  15. “it’s highly probable he the one that killed her in the first place, using Obito’s body and conjuring up some illusion for him to see. ”

Maybe, by who knows. Zetsu isn’t too smart to do something like that. I am wondering why Kakashi awakened the Mangekyou so LATE, it maybe because it didn’t had the Uchiha blood in him maybe.

Then there is Obito, my theory is that he got the Mangekyou because he indirectly killed Rin. Kakashi used Obito’s Eye while killing Rin so it is reasonable how Obito got his eye like that.

  16. I want to see the fight. I mean from the explosions, it looked like it would be pretty epic. But I don’t think that they were the real Kakashi and Rin because of the explanation of where Minato was. The Zetsu clearly didn’t know who he was at first until Obito explained. So, that could be something that they hadn’t planned for. I don’t know waiting or wednesday…again…

  17. Actually now that I think about it, it would’ve been amazing to see how things would’ve worked if Obito returned to the leaf village. Would they be able to activate some of the Sharingan’s powers such as susanoo if they worked together?
