「強襲」 (Kyoushuu)
“Attack”

We’ve had a great deal of flashbacks in the previous episodes so it was nice to see one which centers on present time (the other ones did too, but not as much). Taira and Ryouta’s bond is now stronger and they seem to be able to trust each other which is great. While Taira may be a disadvantage in this game because of his physical condition, he is an amusing character who is growing. It feels weird to use the word “heartwarming” in a post about BTOOOM!, but that’s what their friendship feels like to me. Ryouta could easily leave Taira to make his battle more undemanding, but he chose to be dragged down by bringing Taira with him in hope of escaping from the island. It may be a naïve thing to do, but very moving in a brutal show like this one.

Our duo is now a trio but bringing Himiko into the team was not an easy thing to do. The girl is strong, straightforward, and quite stubborn. It was quite interesting to see Ryouta dodging Himiko’s stun gun several times. He doesn’t look like a person with a lot combat experience. Perhaps it’s just a reflex but still, he was very impressive, however, he was probably only lucky. The food case’s conductivity was his rescue. When Ryouta’s perverted mind showed up after he knocked out Himiko, I felt slightly angry at him. While it’s natural to feel attraction and curiosity around a beautiful girl, it’s very weird to do what Ryouta did. His feelings came off as quite indecent to me because they were so out of place. Luckily, Ryouta had some sanity left and stopped before things went wrong. Still, it surprises me that he’d try to do something like peeping beneath the skirt of a girl who repeatedly has expressed her hate for men.

So now, Himiko is finally a part of the main team which gives Ryouta a great amount of BIMs. Aside from the upgrades, there were a lot of revelations in this episode. While we, the viewers, already knew how people ended up on the island, our protagonist didn’t. At last, Ryouta can see what he did to his mother and how it affected her. His mother has every right to be fed up with her son, but that doesn’t mean that it’s okay to send him to a survival game. I wonder if Ryouta’s mother tried any kind of therapy before making this harsh decision. While she is the reason he is stuck, it’s easy to see that she still cares for him. She probably signed that paper without thinking when she was depressed. Seeing her suicide attempt was truly sad, and I really hope Ryouta makes it back home so they can be together again. Ryouta is finally realizing his mistakes, and his mother regrets sending her son away. Ryouta still has a home to return to where he can redeem himself. But first he must survive the explosive survival game, which not only features deadly bombs, but also lethal animals. The giant lizards do not seem friendly. Taira has an injured leg and Himiko is still affected from the stun gun shot. Things are not looking good for Ryouta!

tl;dr: @MadStereoman – #BTOOOM ep 5: Food, action, revelations, and giant lizards! There’s a lot going on in today’s episode.

Random thoughts:

  • I wish the cup ramen we have over here had lids like the ones in this episode.
  • Is there any system for how you nominate people? If so, how does it work?
  • Where did Himiko find the stun gun?
  • So Tyrannos Japan distributed coffee but not mugs? Hmm…
  • Let the shipping begin!
  • I spot a new BIM type in the preview.
  • Ryouta is obviously making a run for it from the lizards, but would Kousuke do the same?
  • Himiko’s aim is bad for sure. Didn’t Ryouta teach his wife some tricks?
  • Full-length shots: 14, 17, 35

      Age difference, illegal relationship, good.

    Ryouta no Ecchi!!

Quite surprised to see that the fatty’s corpse was quite intact despite being bombed..not sure if this is an oversight or?

    • November 2, 2012 at 10:07 amjrj

if I remember correctly, in the manga that fatty corpse is blown to two pieces… so this is probably a way for anime to censor gore…

  • November 2, 2012 at 9:29 amznail

Not much chance for a shipping war as there aren’t exactly an over abundance of candidates. The main couple is already married too, they just don’t realise it yet.

nice point! so nothing creepy about him wanting to check out the goooods of his “Wife” hehe hes just kinky like that

Generally most of the 12-episode manga to anime series have been ended with anime original endings this year. I don’t think this would be an exception seeing as its already jumbled around slightly.

        I hope I’m wrong though!

    • November 3, 2012 at 3:24 amShinichick39

Might be a possibility of an anime original ending, but who knows, they could make a 26 episode one? Or is it offical that a 13 episode season is in store?

      • November 3, 2012 at 6:26 amKurisu Vi Britannia

ANN says 12 but I’m unsure whether that’s official.

I’d go with 26 definitely being anime official though seeing as the manga isn’t finished and doesn’t seem to be nearing an end.

  • November 2, 2012 at 10:15 amjrj

Sakamoto’s reflex continue to amaze me. But Himiko is so cute for throwing bomb with her eyes closed… the action part is nice xD, and of course the peeping is fun too… you got to say, if a hot girl like Himiko is in front of you in that condition, most men would have some sort of desire like Sakamoto did…

If I remember correctly, Himiko had that stun gun ever since her incident with her former “friends”… that is how her dislike for men started…

23 minutes for this show seems so short :(
and thanks for coverage as always, stereoman!

I see some flaw here. lizards don’t hunt in the night because they are cold-blood reptiles

    • November 2, 2012 at 12:53 pmos

one may say the lizards are not hunting, but being attracted to the camp fire.

    • November 2, 2012 at 4:01 pmKit-a-Ron-Ron-Kat

It is not always true, as some reptiles in very hot climates are nocturnal (too hot blood can be lethal). In the case of the Komodo Dragon though, you are right, they are known to be strictly diurnal.

Then again, one might wonder how Tyranos Japan got so many Komodo Dragon out of Komodo Island…

      • November 2, 2012 at 6:45 pmKoroshiyaKi

Actually Komodo Dragons exist on islands other than the island of Komodo (they can actually swim between islands if the need). Though they are still restricted to being in the island chain of Indonesia. Therefore we have a rough idea of where Tyranos is hosting this death match (given that they said an island in the Pacific this narrows it down to a specific region).

This entire system is basically hotline to hell from Jigoku Shoujo, with a possibility to go back :D

  • November 2, 2012 at 10:56 amKira526

Even though I wasn’t planning on it, I ended up reading all the available manga chapters after watching last week’s episode ^^;; It makes me even more impatient for new episodes lol. That being said, I was NOT looking forward to the komodo dragons showing up! As if people with bombs wasn’t life threatening enough! I literally face palmed though when Ryouta peeked under Himiko’s skirt. Not only was it indecent, but kind of stupid considering the fact that someone could have killed him from behind while he was distracted. At least he stopped himself and helped carry her somewhere safe (at the time).

As far as I know, 12

For some reason or instincts, i dont trust Taira, i feel he’ll end up betraying.

    p.s wooot, it’s pink……….

it was both indecent and out of place but i kind of like the fact Ryouta isn’t a all-round good guy, makes him more human.he is more like someone who has a bad(and strong) personality but pulls through wen it matters.

“While we, the viewers, already knew how people ended up on the island, our protagonist didn’t. At last, Ryouta can see what he did to his mother and how it affected her. Survival game?? more like death game. And i don’t think things will work out tht well. She kind of tried to hav him KILLED(difficult to accept wen it’s ur own mother). While Ryota was being pretty unreasonable surely there were much better ways to deal with the situation.

  • November 2, 2012 at 1:36 pmshurai

Did the letter actually say anything about what would happen to the individuals or just that they would disappear?

If it was just disappear I can’t consider it too bad for the mother to have wished it, cause from my memory most people didn’t even believe it was real. So it’s more like anyone, family or friend, that you’ve had a fight with, not to mention a long fight with, that you wish they were just out of your life. And Ryouta didn’t look like he was leaving home anytime soon it looked like.

I don’t think she ever wished to put him in a life threatening situation, just out of her life, or maybe just out of the house lol.

  • November 2, 2012 at 5:21 pmMartianMage

From the preview… looks like Taira’s gonna bite the dust soon. He’ll prolly surrender the chips have collected so far and kamikaze their opponent.

  • November 2, 2012 at 5:22 pmflCer

just wanted to make this remark:

taira said he won’t play this game to make it off the island, yet they spent screentime to explitcitly show him collecting the shards of the dead bodies.

I think this is foreshadowing a betrayal.

    • November 3, 2012 at 2:27 amgoodstuffs

nah i get the feeling their friendship has to do alot more with taira kinda being a father figure to Ryouta as long as hes not the one gettin it on with his mom! So that fact alone makes him more acceptable than the stepdad lol… and he isnt playing the game but hes smart enough to realize that hey theyre dead anyways why not collect the chips he didnt kill them but if he has them handy he has chance to survive the “game”… in case not playing the game doenst pan out! he still wants to not die ;) cant hate him for that. and well hes older so its not like oh well… time to leet it up pwn sum noobs!! like his young friend mr world top10…

  • November 2, 2012 at 9:47 pmshuin_exe

Himiko always carry stun gun on even on her school days, to protect her self from guys like the fat guy…

  • November 3, 2012 at 3:38 amDjalaal

I can completely understand Ryouta pervertedly taking a peek when such a great opportunity is given. I think most guys would agree with me here. You know guys…
Although I don’t say he should have. I was almost shouting DON’T there. Pity the girl for god’s sake.
This show proves to more than just explosions. I’m starting to like it…

  • November 3, 2012 at 5:01 amwreph

so now look more reason why there all in the island?

ryouta & taira have food seen dead fat guy then lead ryouta to scout seen another corpse & blonde himiko.

give ryouta be nice guy but himiko still boom all the men so dodge both bombs & stun it aim back at himiko at least rid bomb & sorta peek?

cause himiko still stun want boom it all but ryouta stop her & night sure have a kumbaya camp song til more reveal reason in island cause of people they know send them there.

& now prepare to battle giant lizards!!!

  • November 3, 2012 at 8:09 amewok40k

Well, I was afraid that Ryouta will go the way of the previous males encountered by Himiko. Thankfully he had enough self-control, though definitely was temted. I like that angle giving him weaknesses, makes him if a bit less likeable, but at the same time more human.
Poor Ryota’s mother, she actually did try to kill herself after her “nomination”. I can only hope they can ever meet again and reconcile.
Taira has actually some good lines about not giving up and wanting to live, but him actually tracking down dead bodies stones makes me a bit suspicious.
Those lizards are nasty bunch, as dangerous as crocodile, only living on land, and their bites are extremely dangerous with ability to infect wounds with bacteria. They live in smaller islands of Indonesia. Good news is that there must be other islands nearby… Bad news, local law as it is probably can be and was bought by the Evil Inc.
Preview suggests they use mini-drones to watch the game… there will be no easy escape, for sure.

  • November 3, 2012 at 9:05 amKinny Riddle

For Ryouta’s mom, after her continuous effort to simply help Ryouta out of good will and motherly love ends with him scorning her, one thing just piled on another until the final straw broke the camel’s back and she just decided to send him off. I think she knows she’s sending him to his death, hence her deciding to committing suicide afterwards, out of grief for making the painful decision to send an “ungrateful” son to certain doom and not being able to face her own guilt for doing so.

Let’s hope Ryouta redeems himself by surviving, forgives his mom as well as begging forgiveness from her, reflecting on his own behaviour that led her to make such a desperately foolish act.

    • November 3, 2012 at 9:10 amKinny Riddle

The trope of a parent killing off an ungrateful child, and then committing suicide, or simply dying together, is usually found when said child is a villain who used to be good but has gone evil and parent is on the side of the good guys, with the parents often lamenting “Forgive me, son” or “I’ve failed you” before thrusting the dagger, or detonating the bomb, or chanting the spell that’ll kill the both of them and rid the world of one evil.

Though we of course know Ryouta isn’t really evil, but just astray, though he’s not aware of how irresponsible his actions have become that have led to this tragic outcome.

      • November 3, 2012 at 10:52 amznail

He isn’t quite as irresponsible as she thinks either. He did get some side work from his hobby by working for the game company. It should aslo not be too hard for him to get some sponsor as being in the top 10 of the (in this story the most popular game in the world) should be more then enough to get some deals. The issue here is that his parents didn’t tell him they had economic problems. It wouldn’t even be shocking if he has a fair amount of money on the bank and simply didn’t know that his parents were lacking.

    • November 3, 2012 at 3:36 pmshadowalker

u keep using the word “ungrateful” but i don’t think Ryouta’s mom was helping him expecting him to be grateful.

      • November 4, 2012 at 7:52 amSgtKurtz

Maybe her real intention were hoping one day Ryouta became a true human and also a man. A mother hopes to see her flesh and blood become success in life. This is the only way for Ryouta to wake up and face real reality of life.

  • November 3, 2012 at 10:36 amNugester

    Lets go Himiko x Ryouta!

    • November 4, 2012 at 7:49 amSgtKurtz

Cheer them both….both share similar fate in the past, un-wanted by friend and family. They make a better couple

  • November 4, 2012 at 7:48 amSgtKurtz

This anime remind me of latest Predator movie and some random occasions similar to this anime. BTOOOM should be called survival to the fittest. This is even better than Battle Royale…

  • November 5, 2012 at 5:10 amTopboy

    -I don’t expect sakamoto’s family be such a mess.
-Still don’t believe that Taiga is a good guy,he must hide some bad backgroud.
-Sakamoto wasn’t only tried to take a peek but he want to look closer as it could be too.

BTOOOM! is so much fun in very way.
