「一番長いということ」 (Ichiban Nagai to Iu Koto)
“The Longest”

It finally looks like we’re reaching the beginning of the final arc here, where hopefully, and I really stress HOPEFULLY, we get some answers to how the past connects everyone together.

Though still a massive trainwreck as always in terms of plot, we did receive some important information in terms of Youto’s past. We have definitely not heard the last from long-term wishes, as it seems apparent that at least one, if not two separate ones, are at work here. The first one is warping with Youto’s memory of the past by forcibly blocking his memories, while the second is either warping the Tsutsukakushi household’s past, or is warping a subset of the household’s memories. For some reason, someone wished that the truth to the past not be accessible, but now the questions are who…and why.

In terms of who, it looks like the most likely culprit for these wishes lies with Youto, as he is the one who can remember Tsukiko and Tsukushi’s mother, and as such would explain why he maintains such a careful boundary between himself and the Tsutsukakushi sisters. As for why, considering how the most viable link we have is between Youto and the mother, we can assume that Youto was deeply traumatized by her death, and perhaps we can also guess that he feels responsible for it in some way. Maybe such guilt would explain his controlled attitude towards the sisters, instead of happily taking in their affections for him. Of course this is all speculation, but with all the crazy overpowered cat statues that have affected this story, it’s worthwhile to try piecing together something amidst all this chaos! It’s all purely speculative, but it sure is fun to try and guess what Tsukiko and Youto will see in the final arc.

Speaking for this episode though, I am disappointed with how Azuki and Emi have turned into awkwardly structured side-characters who serve only as road signs for Youto to return to tbe main plot. They barely received any time at all and their appearances seemed mostly forced. Now, I wasn’t too bothered with Azuki’s fanservice and clinginess, but what did bother me were the scenes after the first half. Azuki basically came out of nowhere to serve merely to make Tsukiko feel bad, while Emi received even less time and less importance (was her appearance even necessary here?) by directing Youto to, “take care of business.” It was a poorly scripted and directed episode that didn’t mesh well, and if it wasn’t for the over-reaction of the vice-captain and Tsukushi over lewd things, I would call this episode a flop directing-wise.

However, the story has finally set itself up to give some serious answers, and hopefully this current wish will do more good than harm to the understanding of these characters. Up until now, Tsukiko has been constantly giving us a stream into her thought processes with her plainly toned words, but now it is time to investigate how Youto finally ties with the Tsutsukakushi family as a whole. Although the next episode is labeled in exploring Tsukiko’s environment, more likely than not, based on the hints given to us, we will see Youto having more revelations than any member of the Tsutsukakushi household. Let’s look forward to seeing just what burdens Youto has been hiding from himself all these years, and what shadows of the past he must face, and must overcome with Tsukiko at his side.

  1. Tsukiko needs to take that plane to Italy and stay there for good. Her jealousy and paranoia are turning her into an severe annoyance. She was getting quite obnoxious lately but right now she’s simply ruining the show. She can take Emi with her too.

Two lights are shining brightly in all this darkness though.

      1. but, but she can simply wish for the younger brother to be his on the stony cat.

2 Youtos : one for the little sister, one for the elder sister = win
Add one for Azuki as well

  2. I agree that, more and more, it seems like someone wished Yokodera’s memories away. I wonder if it has anything to do with (as far as I can recall) the absence of his parents.

While Tsukiko’s yandere-ness is cute, I can’t believe I’m rooting for baka-Tsukushi’s happy end. Just wow, her idiocy is endearing.

    1. Seriously, why don’t you go start your own blog so you can do your own rehash of the plot synopsis for every episode in bad English all you like rather than contribute nothing to the discussion here?

  4. You’re complaining about Azusa and Emi not getting much screentime? Really? Do you honestly believe that keeping them around for longer would be beneficial to the already immensely confusing plot?

I think that if their involvement was bigger, it would’ve only unnecessarily complicated things further, and we’d still be none the wiser, especially since it seems like neither of them have any real significance to the plot anymore. Right now, it’s all about how Youto and Tsukiko (and perhaps Tsukushi, too) are really connected, so it makes sense that the main focus shifts on them now and that we see less of the other characters.

And I would like to have at least this huge mystery between him and the Tsutsukakushi sisters cleared up first; the whole romantic aspect between him and Azusa and/or Emi can wait.

    1. I didn’t suggest they get more screentime, I suggested that their screentime was for the most part, fairly useless and felt tacked-on. I would rather they get less, more meaningful screentime, than some awful tacked-on screentime just for the sake of screentime.

“Azuki basically came out of nowhere to serve merely to make Tsukiko feel bad, while Emi received even less time and less importance (was her appearance even necessary here?)

  5. Ever since Emi stepped into the fray, it started getting confusing. The Cat God is simply made too powerful, granting and cancelling wishes at will with seemingly no strings attached. As a wish-granting machine, a Cat God is far more economical and less bloodier than a Holy Grail, that’s for sure.

The only explanation I could guess for the Cat God’s unconditional granting and cancelling of wishes is that maybe for every wish granted or cancelled, the Cat God accumulates some sort of mana, allowing it to finally free itself from its petrified status, first via possessing Azusa, and now in a rabbit form.

    1. I’m still waiting on how they’re going to explain that not-so-subtle foreshadowing when Tsukushi mentioned how wishes shorten a person’s lifespan…many episodes have passed without a follow-up on it! D:

  6. Every Saturday, it feels kind of weird watching Kaji Yuuki doing such a wacky comedic role on Henneko, and then a few hours later watch him do the hot-blooded angsty Titan Slaying Eren in Attack on Titan.

His falsetto imitation of Vice President early on this episode simply cracked me up, followed by his unreserved harassment of Tsukiko hiding inside Barbara.

    1. I think pervy, wacky comedic roles fit him better to be honest. It’s hard for me to take him too seriously in a more serious role(Shin Sekai Yori’s Satoru was probably his most successful “serious” one so far but he wasn’t the main character there)but I find him pretty good for shows like Hentai Ouji & Highschool DxD.He should be in more of these if you ask me 😛

      1. He also voices the seventh Jojo of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, the cowboy that can shoot out pseudo black holes from his fingers. I think he’s a decent voice actor when you get past the fact he’s now typecast as the underdog character voice actor.

It works great in context for Johnny Joestar at least.

    1. Well, she did wish that she wouldn’t “express” her emotions openly like she used to. In this case, I’d take it as, literally, facial and vocal expressions in terms of “expressing”, so she won’t smile, she won’t frown, she won’t cry (in a traditional sense), she won’t laugh, she won’t show shock, surprise, disbelief, or anything. Even her cliche “kyaa!” was just an emotionless whisper.

Her face will just have that same emotionless, blank expression with that same soft-spoken monotone voice.

Doesn’t mean the rest of her body won’t show anything though, lol.

This is what happens when you pretend to be a pillow doll and stick your feet out in the opening.

The author just love Italy that much huh? The sisters’ dad is Italian (I didn’t realize it at 1st), Emi is Italian, the school got turned into Rome… etc, etc.

Tsukiko, you are obsessed about Yohto because you think you know him the longest. But knowing someone for a shorter time than that doesn’t mean that you aren’t important to him.
