「黄昏の・・・ 上級契約 (ハイヤーエンゲージ)」 (Koukun no… Joukyuu Keiyaku (Haiyaa Engeeji))
“Twilight of … Advanced Contract (Higher Engage)”

After another season of one of the cutest love stories I’ve ever seen, it comes to a rather predictable end. But who says that predictable can’t also mean awesome?

Because not much happened in the episode, it’ll just be a huge final impression post! More after the break!

If there was a show this season that kept me on my toes and captured my interest without ever letting it go, Chu2Koi Ren is up there with the likes of Kill la Kill and the good parts of Golden Time. But even with it’s near perfect balance of lighthearted humor and heart wrenching moments that just kept you coming back for more, this sequel did something that I really appreciated. As an added bonus, instead of rehashing all the things we went over during the first season like character introductions or chuunibyou as a whole, Kyoani did a fantastic job of bringing us back up to speed without sacrificing the pacing of the story. Basically, I don’t think there was an unneeded episode throughout the whole season. And unlike the first season, I loved how things felt a bit separated this second time around. We had the overarching story of Yuuta and Rikka’s relationship but in-between there was room for every other character to get a chance to shine.

Takanashi Rikka x Togashi Yuuta

The couple whose bonds have transcended time-space itself, these two are probably one of my favorite pairings ever. They’ve put in their fair share of sacrifices while trying to discover just what it takes to build a stable relationship while under the scrutiny of the omniscient Nibutani. They’ve come to a mutual understanding about just how chuunibyou affects things in their relationship and accepted it whole heartily. They’ve even overcome the boundaries of shyness and grown from pinkies, to holding hands, all the way to openly embracing each other without caring who’s around. But out of all things I could talk about, my favorite would still be how the two handled the Sophia situation.

Unlike a lot of other anime couples that tend to epically fail whenever an “X” factor is thrown into the mix (Kimi ni Todoke for some reason popped up in my head), I was extremely pleased with how Yuuta and Rikka handled the whole thing. While it may have taken an episode or two for the actual problems to surface, I just can’t get over how smoothly things went. From Rikka only showing just enough jealously for Yuuta to get the picture in the beginning to Yuuta actually figuring out what was going on and coming up with a creative response, the outcome of what should have been a horrible disaster was pretty pleasing. (Disclaimer: I don’t necessarily like how we got to that outcome though. As you pointed out in the comments in that episode, it kind of felt like Sopha got shafted. Something that I’m sure a lot of us agree was a little unfair!)

Nibutani Shinka and Tsuyuri Kumin — Best Side Characters of the Season

Nibutani and Kumin-senpai both hold a special place in my heart. They’ve both provided such a huge amount of support to everyone in the show that it feels wrong to call them side characters. I guess maybe I can call them the Main Side Characters? Haha.

Seriously though, they both have been so important to the story and development of Yuuta and Rikka’s relationship that it would be a sin not to give them the props for all of their hard work. Starting with Nibutani, I can’t help but just call her simply amazing. As much as she wants to deny it, she cares so much about all of her friends that she’ll go to crazy lengths to help them when they’re suffering. And if that wasn’t enough, her go-getter personality has her trying to help everyone before their problems even start — which sometimes gets her in trouble with Yuuta but nonetheless gets the job done. In the past few episodes alone she’s played a major role in just about everyone’s life. You rock Nibutani.

Then you have Kumin-senpai, someone who I personally thought was a lazy sack of potatoes until I discovered just how brilliant and insightful she is. Besides her amazing performance during the Siesta episode, she’s the senpai who knows just when a few simple words can make change happen. Be it when there’s an argument going on or someone’s completely lost, she always has just the right words to make things better. Now, if only she would completely stop using those awful one-liners!

Shichimiya “Sophia” Satone

The girl who stole my heart even when I thought it was already gone, Sophia is the best girl. While it’s set in stone she’ll never get to rekindle the fire she once had with Yuuta, I enjoyed watching every second she was on screen. Maybe it’s because she’s like the animeification of some of my own real life events but watching her struggle with her emotions to the point where she almost broke down just felt so real that at times I swore I could feel the pain swelling in her chest.

I’ve talked on and on about Sophia throughout the past like five posts but if I had to pick just one single reason to watch this second season, it would definitely be to see Sophia and all her antics. (I need to go watch Chu2Koi Ren Lite episodes later. Fuuuuuuuu)

Dekomori Sanae and Isshiki

Out of the entire cast minus Yuuta’s family, Dekomori and Isshiki probably got the least amount of screen time this season. Well, I suppose Isshiki got the least but that’s beside the point. In Dekomori’s case, I loved the little sister role she managed to play. Be it to Rikka as her “servant” or to Nibutani as the girl she has a love/hate relationship with, her influence on these two brought some really great episodes. My personal favorite would probably be the Fake Mori Summer episode where Nibutani and Dekomori really got the chance to show their true feelings for each other.

Isshiki, I wish you and Chihiro the best.

Final, Final Impressions

From start to finish, the second season of Chu2Koi was great. With high production values all around and a great love story that almost gave me almost everything I wanted, there was never a dull moment to be found. If there was a fault to be found with the series, my only gripe would be how Sophia’s feelings for Yuuta were handled. But like I said earlier, the outcome of it was satisfying and in all honesty sometimes life is like that — sometimes you just lose because the cards just aren’t in your favor.

So to everyone who’s made it this far, thank you for reading my posts and riding the Chu2Koi Ren train with me. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did and maybe in the future we’ll get a third season where Rikka and Yuuta actually lock lips together? 😀

TL;dr: Great sequel to an already great show. With all the characters playing an important role, the main couple gets a chance to really discover what it means to have a “relationship”. Also, sharing mana is my new pastime.

    1. Deko x Nibu will always be my OTP of the show.

And yeah, I feel bad for Isshiki.

And this show could have used more Touka, her loli girl, and Stalker-san.

But anyway, a good second season in the end.

    2. Not bad sequel eh? For the most part it was just a shitty rehash of the first season, there was absolutely no plot for more than half of it’s episodes, Yuuta and Rikka’s relationship progressed even slower than in season 1, it took them two seasons to start holding hands, they made Makoto black (extreme tan) and gay, and overall it was just waste of my and everyone else’s god damn time, and its “not bad”? People like you are the reason we get bad series.

  1. Disagree with you on the impact of this season Takaii, I found it staler and more monotone than the first.

It seems overall that this season did not know what it wanted to be. It had to be SoL to keep the humourous feel of the previous season, but it also needed to be a serious romance and analysis of chuunibyou. Then there had to be moe to keep the cute and lighthearted feel, yet realistically portray its characters in tune with the teenage romance. In the end Chuunibyou touched on everything without mastering any single one.

Personally it gets a 6/10 from me. The SoL and moe is all fine and good, but it lacks the consistent plot and significant character development to boost it from “above average” into the “good” territory. Before I’m downvoted to h*ll and gone note that I’m not the only one to think this, the sale data for this season is half what the first cour brought in. If anything KyoAni is learning that moe alone is not enough to sustain a series indefinitely.

    1. I’m gonna have to agree with you. I enjoyed the first season a lot, it had everything, comedy, romance and even a bit of drama to make things more interesting. And while I felt that the 2nd season started on a strong note, it kind of failed to deliver. After everything is said and done… nothing is done! I am gonna be honest here, but I feel that Shichimya’s introduction was absolutely redundant and in the end, added little to nothing to the story, to point that it felt like a filler, something to waste some time with. While it may have been fairly entertaining in itself, as a whole, it provided no progress to the story at all.

      Also, while I completely expected KyoAni to troll everyone with the last episode, especially when they were talking about a kiss from the very beginning, I mean, who thought it would actually happen? I’m still annoyed that it didn’t happen, though ;_;

All in all, this show goes from 8/10 for the first season to only 6/10 for the 2nd one, as well.

      1. I agree about Shichimiya. Yeah, I love the girl and she was fun to watch, but she was an obvious plot device at best. It’s just disappointing how she was handled. And where did it get us ultimately? Not much farther. It’s not so much about the progression from pinking holding, to hand holding, to hugs, to kisses, to sekusu, but about the advancement in the characters. And while it doesn’t necessarily feel like we’re back at square one, we didn’t get much return on our investment.

On the other hand, the production values were spectacular, and I absolutely loved all the humor. Nibutani x Dekomori stole my hear—my main reason for looking forward to this show every week. Plus, I think Takaii is totally right about Nibutani and Kumin-senpai. Best girls, right there.

    2. Although I agree with what you guys said, i give it a different scoring. 8.5/10 for the first season and 8/10 for the second season.

I am just wondering that if the season was part of the light novel or was some outside of the original light novel story. I mean, the light novels were only two volumes.

      banzemanga
      1. From what I have heard only the setting was largely carried over from the light novel, the plot and character development was different. Shichimiya was apparently more “dark” (guessing manipulative and cynical) than the version we got here. Not to mention both Yuuta and Rikka supposedly kissed, twice, in the light novel.

    3. I agree with you, Pancakes. S2 essentially thew away any character depth Rikka obtained in season 1 to focus on her being cute and chuunibyou. Unfortunately, most of the enjoyment derived from chuunibyou has vanished by now – the jokes have worn thin and are no longer funny, and sometimes they go into chuunibyou just for the sake of chuunibyou, rather than to show how characters were conflicted about it (as in the case of Nibutani going chuunibyou against Dekomori in S1).

For all that you say about romantic development in S2, Takaii, Rikka was more romantically flat for most of S2 than she was in S1. Her character essentially regressed. I honestly can’t call being able to hold hand much progress if Rikka’s still constantly lost in her delusions, never really seeing what Yuuta is doing for her. She’s essentially a kid. The one character who brought genuine romantic depth to the scene was Shichimiya, with her conflicts about whether to retain her childishness or grow up and fall in love, but Kyoani seems to be taking a conservative and immature approach to it: ignore love, ignore growth, ignore maturity, everything is fine as long as you keep your childish delusions. Yuuta’s lines at the end of this episode are utterly representative of this. They don’t have to grow up. They can just be utterly passive and everything will just work out in the end, because of course there will be a happy ending waiting for them.

S1, I realise, was criticised for encouraging immaturity in much the same way. But S1’s focus wasn’t on growth so much as it was on coming to terms with and expressing your inside identity. S2, on the other hand, literally pushes you to regress back to your eight-grade self. Given Japan’s already regressive culture of NEETs and hikikomoris, this makes S2 not only less entertaining compared to S1 but a more mistaken and sickeningly childish depiction of life.

    5. I got a 6/10(MAL ratings) from me as well. Nibutani really saved it from being getting 5. Best character of the series IMO. I felt her frustration about the lack of progress between Yuuta & Rikka every single time.

    6. No one should downvote you, IMO. Your thoughts are respectful and clearly reflects your opinions on the matter. I happen to agree with you as well. The season felt pointless and the development was stale. It all felt like KyoAni was more interested in cashing in on the first season and they certainly just mailed it in.

  2. It’s impossible to hate any character in this series, though the damn cat could have held those cute little babies in for a few more seconds XD.

I will admit though, when that damn phone rang, the amount of jamaican patois and cursing that came out of my mouth is pretty ear cringing.

…..Isshiki…….has evolved……in more ways than one, if you catch my drift 😉

  3. Ya I was a bit disappointed with how KyoAni ended Sophia’s love for Yuuta, but this was still a very enjoyable finale. I never really got too into the first season, but this season was utterly fantastic! Oh and Chihiro, Isshiki’s new friend, looks like a character from Free!

  4. TBH, as the season ends, I have mixed feelings about this show. To put it bluntly, too much chuunibyou for me. JMO, as I realize that a big draw for many of the shows fans, but what drew me to the series during season one, wasn’t the chuunibyou fantasies itself, but how it affected the lives of the characters and how they struggled to overcome it as they move towards becoming young adults.

So I entered the second season expecting that. Maybe that was a mistake on my part, but I honestly did expect some progression (or at least an effort) by Rikka and maybe even Dekomori to move past constant chuunibyou. Of course I didn’t expect that to happen overnight (bad storytelling if it did IMO), but something even if it came in a “two steps forward, one back”, stop and start kind of way.

That really didn’t happen from what I saw. Instead, to me it seems that chuunibyou took center stage on equal footing with the characters. Everything was solved via chuunibyou, and 12 episodes later, when all is said and done, Rikka seems the same as she did in episode one. Actually, she might have regressed a bit. I was also a bit frustrated with the progression of Rikka’s and Yuuta’s relationship. To be clear, I’m NOT talking about progressing in the same manner or level as the the cat., but rather something beyond getting totally embarrassed every time their hands accidentally touch, or the word “date” is mentioned. They’ve been going out for a few months now, haven’t they?

For me, the strength of this season was the “side” characters, specifically Shichimiya and Nibutani. Shichimiya is best girl IMO, but Nibutani is a close second. Nibutani wasn’t a favorite of mine first season, but she definitely was by the end of this season. She was wingman, mom, close friend – supportive in every way to the others. Damn… can I have two best girls?

Shichimiya edges out Nibutani simply on the “feels” aspect. Episode 10, as sad as it was, IMO was the best episode this season (still feel sorry for the poor girl :<). It's also a great example where I think the show's true strength lies – not the chuunibyou fantasies, but the characters as they struggle with the pains of adolescence. This wasn't a bad season, but I would have preferred less chuunibyou this time around.

    1. It felt a bit too easy to just brush off with such things as “moving forward at their own pace” like Yuuta did all the time. If they did really move forward, it’d be fine, but with how very tip-toe their relationship progressed, it sounded more like an excuse NOT to move forward later on, so it’s easy to see why Shinka was so upset and annoyed at the two.

The better parts of it being, as you mentioned, Satone and her situation by the end or Rikka actually admitting that she was scared and such. Those are things that many viewers can really relate to.

Still, all the sweetness from this, Mikakunin, and the last bit of Golden Time made my diabetes explode.

      HalfDemonInuyasha
    2. This cour is a case of “might have beens” and “if onlys”. If only Rikka had tried to shed her Chuuni personality (with occasional backsliding and failures). Or if only Rikka had kept her Chunniness because she was afraid Yuuta wouldn’t find the “real” her attractive. If only Rikka had reverted back to her Chuuni personality because she felt threatened by Sophia and thought Yuuta liked Sophia better because she was so into Chuunibyou fantasies.

I don’t disagree on your top two characters, but I put Nibutani in first and Shichimiya in a close second. Shichimiya consciously gave up on reality and I think she loses points for that. I would have liked to have seen her become more like Dekomori who is well aware that her Chuunibyou is just a fantasy. Nibutani was even better this cour than the last and Kumin has become a great sidekick for her.

      Bear
      1. I believe they all are aware that it’s just a fantasy. It’s the decision of which one will take the fore with each of them that matters. Sophia forced herself into the fantasy world to keep from dealing with real life feelings. Nibutani is desperately looking to be normal (and that becomes almost like her own private fantasy with the extreme’s and tropes she uses). Dekomori is still young and enjoys playing around (but she knows when to play the ojou-sama). Kumin is interesting in that she’s on the periphery of the fantasy world. She’s actually envious of how everyone looks to have so much fun in a world in which she can’t fully participate. This would be a cool examination on what potentially heavy things are on her mind, but it won’t go there. Yuuta is forced to into this DM type role in order to try to communicate. Rikka… I think they ruined her. When she was ‘losing her powers’ I was happy because I was hoping that this was character development. She didn’t have to totally let it all go. It could have been expressed chuunibyou style where she gets progressively weaker in combat until the ‘final battle’ where she passes the baton and focuses on life with Yuuta. Then her heart and body can be ready for more than holding hands and actually kiss. (Seriously. I’m all for moving at the right pace, but it’s been a year. I’m not asking them to go at it like sex starved teens, just don’t look like you’re about to die when you’re about do something more intimate than holding pinkies in private).

tl;dr – Everyone knows that its play and fantasy. They were on the right track with the ‘losing powers’ thing, but Status Quo is a cruel and angry god.

  5. Hmmm so how much progress did we get? Not much in my opinion.
The show was decent I reckon: Nibutani, Deko and Kumin-senpai were good side characters who provided good comedy and even tried to get the plot moving here and there.

However the romance was extremly lacking, Rikka became more and more annoying and immature in my eyes especially in comparison to Sophia (poor girl).
Togashi was incredibly stale this season.
He has the patience of a sage thats true and he is not a Beta such as Honoka (WCW) but I dont see this relationship going forward if all he does is waiting.
In certain parts you would think Rkka was more of a little sister to him than his real sister.

All in all I dont think it suceeded in fulfilling the expectations from the first season but still a fun watch anyway. Status Quo Hurray!

  6. I almost flipped my bed over in rage at the predictable near kiss on the lips. If it wasn’t for the cute kiss on the cheek exchange that happened just before, I might’ve punched a hole in the wall too boot.

It is very rare that I say a sequel far excels over the original (Clannad After Story is the only other series in mind), but I must say that this series is one of those few that managed to do so. Its likely due to the inclusion of Sophia that added an extra dynamic to the series to make it feel fresh and fun.

  7. That’s fucked up KyoAni. You know what you did was wrong! Just shit all over Isshiki’s feelings and try to make it seem like he was living that Free! life. The whole scene gave me the same vibes I was feeling from Shin Sekai Yori. Out of character and the lengths anime will go to change a character makes me shake my head.

I know someone will point out the time when Yuuta and Isshiki was mistaken as a couple. Well I say f that! Only Yuuta and Rikka can have a happy end! That was to be expected, but to just troll Isshiki bro like that, why ya gotta be so mean?!

Oh right, Chimaera gets to have a happy ending with all its little children. Yumeha is probably going to get back with Touka (lol). Kumin is going to be fine as long as she has a pillow. ALthough she is perfectly fine with using her hands as a substitute because that’s what Masters of Sleep do. Nibutani has Dekomori, but Isshiki…why?!

I’d rather you just NTR Isshiki and make up some character that Kumin falls for instead of letting him get molested and possibly raped.

Why even have Isshiki show up at all during this season? He fails at being comedy relief, unless some very evil people laughed at his pain.

Dare I say it, I felt bad more for Isshiki than I did Shichimiya.

    magoiichi
    1. Yeah, I rather liked Ishhiki in the first season, but cringed every time he showed up this time around. It also made it look like all of Yuuta’s friends were girls which would be… rather unusual to say the least.

      Hochmeister
  8. Let us have a moment’s silence for Isshiki’s virginity. (Way to go Chihiro. 😀 )

Why do I get the feeling some of the guys from Free have slipped this scene into the script? LOL

  9. I don’t know why, but them not kissing at the end seemed right for this anime. If any anime can get away with slow progress Chu2koi can. Didn’t expect much in terms or relationship development at the beginning of the season so I was able to enjoy all the episodes.

    The Atomic Dwarf
  10. And so this season ends without kisses…between Nibutani and Dekomori. Boo! 0/10

Jokes aside, I enjoyed this season, and I’d say it’s about on par with the first one. The first one had more plot happen versus the more comedy/romance of this one, but it stumbled a bit during its drama. This one screwed up a bit with the resolution of Sophia’s feelings, but she was a lovable character regardless. My biggest worry about her being a third wheel was laid to rest as well, as she didn’t interfere and never even stood a chance – her story was all about heartbreak. And the way they told that story was done masterfully.

I agree with you, Takaii, that the way this season was built from a lot of little mini-stories was pretty well done. We had Yuuta and Rikka’s plot with their problems of getting physically closer, you had Sophia’s heartbreak, the vitriolic best buds relationship of Shinka and Dekomori and even eps where Kumin gets a chance to shine (which I felt was where the first series was lacking). Lots of character development followed, and the resolutions that came out of them were mostly very satisfying to watch and made sense as well. As a result these characters have really grown on me. Man, I’ll miss them, really.

So overall, this show avoided most pitfalls it could have fallen into, gave us more of the characters we love and the chuunibyou aspect was handled even better. For what is basically an add-on sequel, it went above and beyond my expectations. This show was solid from begin to end, and it was one of the more enjoyable ones this season for me. Not sure if we’re getting a sequel (or if it, again, even needs one) but I know I’d watch it if it aired. Because more Shinka is never a bad thing.

    1. Deko better drink that milk. Rikka has curves.

A shame they didn’t have Sophia line up but we all know from the pool and beach episodes where she’s at. I do believe Kumin takes them all to town though.

  12. It was fun & all, albeit not as much as the 1st season, but it didn’t really go anywhere.

Now,let’s get straight to the point: KyoAni has been lacking big time recently. Fans & haters aside, the people who were neutral to them(*raises hand*) are getting tired of them and some of them are not even bothering to watch their shows anymore.

  13. I actually found myself thinking that this would have been the type of episode that would give purpose to this season. It’s too bad this was the season finale, because this was pretty decent.

  14. Poor Sophia (;_;) Relegated to being the wingman of her love rival, basically giving her advice and pushing her to do what she herself would have done with Yuta. My heart goes out to her for being such a good and strong friend amidst such adversity and heartache.

I was disappointed in this episode because I was fully expecting it to be about Yuta chasing after Sophia about her goodbye (i.e. the novel route), her fully letting out all her feelings, they have an awesome chuuni battle, and them amending their friendship at long lost. I wanted more drama and tears and yes, another Sophia episode. Instead, the goodbye was noted as nothing more than her closing out her feelings (i.e. “good bye Yuta, my unrequited love”) and again she is now a background support character on the same level of Deko, Nibutani and Kumin. Nothing against them but Sophia deserves to be more than than, she’s best-friend material to Yuta instead of being connected to him mainly via Rikka now. This actual episode would have been an awesome Episode 13 but instead they end it at 12 episodes.

The novel did more justice to closing out Sophia. While I didn’t necessarily see it ending the way it did in the anime as it was in the novel, I would have liked them to carry over all that action and suspense. They did well with the drama up to EP 10 but lost steam.

Overall, it was a good season up until the last two episode for me.

Hope for a third season, and for goodness sake throw Sophia someone to be with. Out of all the girls, you built up her the most this whole season and even at the end when she was reinforcing Rikka under the bridge, you still showed how amazing a person she is. The girl deserves her own! (I will also accept an alternate telling OVA with her as heroine).

  15. Ok, they’re finally going to do it! A little bit closer… closer… it’s finally happenin- Darnit, gypped again! [forehead, meet palm].

At the end of the first season I was rather skittish about the idea of a second; I didn’t think it would live up to it. In the end, while season 2 definitely wasn’t a flop, it didn’t knock the ball out of the part so to say. While I liked the themes of romance being more complicated than simply entering into a relationship (let’s face it, the hard stuff starts after that), there wasn’t that much conflict or development between the main couple. Heck, everything was pretty much resolved in episode 2 when they decided to take things at their own pace. However, Rikka and Yuuta’s lack of development was made up for by the quirky humor and the excellent supporting cast, especially Nibutani and Sophia. All in all an enjoyable season, but not as good as I feel it could have been.

  16. I didn’t really get all the rage people had for not having a kiss.

Sure, this season had it’s ups and downs. I kinda liked the message in this ending though it could have been delivered well had this been an episode prior to the finale.

Overall I found this more relaxing than season 1. Though I did find season 1 to be a lot better paced overall. Not to mention it had made use of great build ups. Insert songs sold me to that series.

This season was a tad too episodic for my expectations. It felt like it didn’t use its time efficiently. Still, it was a very amusing show. I will miss more Deko x Nibutani moments. 🙁

  17. Ohoho…ChuuKoi…i definitely always had a good laugh in every episode i watched (except Sophia’s heartbreak)

As a starter, i like the idea where Rikka decided to improve their relationship. Deciphering her chuunibyo’s speech, even she gets tired of the same cycle in her daily life with Yuuta. This is where our female casts come in. I love it when everyone of them offer help to Rikka, and that girls-talk moment and sista power!

Shinka has always get my attention ever since the first season. I really love her character. She is seriously a great friend. And Kumin sees that in her(the reason i love observer like her), and the way she praises Shinka with that sweet smile shows how lucky they are, especially Yuuta(Rikka’s confession during the first season) has a friend like her. The fail-attempt of kissing really landed a heavy blow on Shinka lol…

And as for our sweetheart Sophia, i cant missed the every second of her expression during the last part. She sees herself in Rikka, and she made sure Rikka wont end up with the same regret. It was bittersweet, we can see how the romance between Rikka and Yuuta during the riverbank stings her a little. And im proud of her courage and how she decided to move on.

Last but not least, Yuuta. He may got me annoyed with him a little, especially how he treats Rikka like a child. I’ve been accusing him for his attitude towards Rikka, that he is the reason why Rikka became so helpless without him and wouldnt want to grow out of her syndrome. But despite of this, i like his loyalty towards Rikka. He may seems like generic MC, but he is still a prideful guy with guts after all. 🙂

lol at Shinka and Kumin during the sento’s part. XDD “Dynamite”, “Tiny;Pretty~” Oh you girls and your proud big assets! XDDD

Thank you for blogging Chuukoi Takaii-san. It was a fun experience watching this series. Perhaps one of my favorite among KyoAni’s works.

  18. yo FUCK THE CAT OK. marathoned the shit out of chuunibyou just now and overall, yes, it was a great series, but (and i know i’m going to get flak for this) goddamnit.. ren’s ending was some real pussy shit. i’ll admit, they had some balls when they forced satone’s crying face on me, but this… this ending… nibutani did a damn good job emulating the audience’s reaction! i know i’m overreacting but i just find it a little half-assed when the studio decides to build on the story but gives us that kind of ending.

honestly feel like nibutani is not appreciated by yuuta enough as a character. she’s his best friend and yet he doesn’t get shit for telling her to stop butting in his business! this series was cute all around and the first season definitely had me in tears during the finale but goddamn is yuuta just mindbogglingly dense as a character. i know he’s basically a romcom staple by being clueless about rikka but come on, at least show some gratitude to your best friend!

it seems like a real damn shame when such a great cast of characters are not supported by the execution of the plot. satone, for instance, is such a gripping character. her story with yuuta was really heart-wrenching and we all knew the problem had to be fixed somehow; but i felt like her final “battle” with yuuta was just plain shallow and lacked any sort of closure. i’m guessing now that “bye-bye” was just a way for her to make her final decision, but (imo) the studio took it for granted!

ren is a mess but it definitely didn’t fail to deliver on the chuunibyou novelties. i have a feeling, though, that too much emphasis was placed on trying to not rock the boat. i bet many people would like to argue that progress was made but this all just felt like an extra to me. a side story that could have easily been a damn good sequel, but instead, ends up being hollow and unambitious.

  19. wtf so much drama and it ended up just like that. Seriously this series needs more guys, i mean such attractive girls and yet most aren’t even potential to be harem, it would add a lot of love triangles but then again it would just be like nagiasu.

I agree with some people saying it didn’t have a clear plot.
