“Super Bag in the Heart”

「スーパーバッグ・イン・ザ・ハート」 (Supa Baggu in za Hato)

Souta & Inami:

For the past two weeks Satou and Yachiyo have been in the spotlight, but this episode was all about Souta and Inami (and Yamada). As I’ve come to expect, any episode that features the Takanashi family becomes much less hilarious – like the second episode of this season, there wasn’t a single laugh out loud moment that came from that selection of characters. This week they came from others, mainly Yamada and Izumi’s editor. The set-up for the Souta and Inami meeting wasn’t particular funny, but it did effectively build up amusing encounter.

Yet, as as much as Souta and Inami made me smile this episode, the single most touching moment was Souta reminiscing about his first meeting with Popura. I’ve finally come to the decision that I can’t get behind this pairing. Inami’s development in this season has been great, and her interactions with her crush have been cute, but as an actual couple I just don’t see it. Maybe that’s an unpopular opinion… but Souta/Popura all the way! I doubt it will happen, since WORKING!! has always spotlighted this relationship, so I’ll just enjoy what I can and hope I get a few laughs along the way.

Regardless of my bias against Souta and Inami as a couple, the second half of the episode was a return to form – nowhere near as funny as the previous two episodes, mind you, but still amusing. Inami arriving with boxing gloves and a paper bag over her head got a laugh out of me, as did the blushing at the end of the episode. As I said, it’s cute, but it’s not enough for me to be aboard this ship. I refuse entry!

Meanwhile, at Wagnaria:

YAMADA! She’s had a subplot in every episode so far this season, hasn’t she? Why? (answer: she’s the best). This one was just as hilarious as every other before it. Yamada’s fluctuating moods never fail to amuse me, but I do feel sorry for everyone who works with her. Her quest for finding her new favourite food had me laughing at a few points: her naming Souma as her helpful big brother, before he disappears from her side; Yamada returning to her natto; and her being cute as a button till the very end. Yamada, I love you. Keep being you!

Overview – What’s Next?:

Going by this episode, it does seem like we’re heading for a Souta/Inami resolution by the end of the season. I can’t say I’m particularly looking forward to it, but I won’t hate it either. I’ll take it as it comes, and accept whatever happens. As for next week, however, I’m very much looking forward to it. It’s a Yamada episode – the best kind of WORKING!! episode.

  1. I agree to you Samu. I was a Souta/Popura fan this past two seasons though I can see Mahiru as a potential love interest and ship but I feel like they should develop it more so I can be invested in their relationship (like Jun/Yachiyo)

But this season, last episode and this episode and the spoilers I have found made me ship this two now and I could get more invested later on (hopefully). And it looks like my theory is right that around episode 6 should be the start of Yamada’s arc.

  2. Who knew that of all the characters to help Souta and Inami at least start talking together again, it would be Izumi! The most useless character the whole series somehow manages to get the gears going through her desire to be cared for the rest of her life! How she managed to sniff out Inami despite barely surviving 10-15 minutes outside will forever be a mystery though…

  4. I personally always was Souta/poplar shipper. But it was obvious since the end of S1 that mangaka herself ships him with Inami. So I just hope for any romantic conclusion. At least this season Inami stopped being annoying.
