「鳳凰星武祭」 (Houou Houshibu Matsuri)
“Phoenix Star Warrior Festival / Phoenix Festa”

Every week Asterisk seems to just get better and better. Here begins the Phoenix Festa!

Countering OP with OP

Seeing how Ayato is already pretty overpowered on his own (even with a built in time limit to how long his powers will stay activated for), it’s pretty tough to imagine anybody or anything getting through a combination of Ayato and Julis. I mean, when it comes down to raw numbers, those two probably top the charts in all aspects. Toss in all their teamwork training and Ayato’s flashy performance during their opening match, it almost makes you feel bad for anyone who’s up against them! That is, until the show introduced us to Aldy and Rimsy, a pair of autonomous puppets that for all intents and purposes have redefined the word “overpowered”. Basically, how do you beat robots that have the processing power to deflect bullets mid-flight and the personality traits of an old married couple? Throw in Aldy’s extremely powerful shield that can apparently block any attack and it feels like there are some real shenanigans at work here. At the end of the day though, I can’t wait to see what a battle between all four of them would look like. Because if this episode was any indication of what’s to come, it’ll be just as awesome as it is pretty.

Irene Urzaiz

Man, I wish we got to see more of this girl! With hair as red as fire and fangs that any ookami would be jealous of, I can’t wait to see what this Irene character is all about. Coming off as a tough cookie with a sweet spot for her sister, there are so many questions surrounding her past and purpose that I really hope she gets a whole episode to herself. From what little we saw though, it seems that she and Dirk have a past together, something I doubt most people would want.

Looking Ahead

Gah! This episode introduced so many different things that I’m having a bit of an information overload. With new characters and old ones gushing back onto the stage, I’m really curious how the show is going to handle all of it with the few episodes it has left for this first half. From Irene’s mysterious introduction to the insanely strong Aldy and Rimsy, it looks like Ayato and company are going to have a real situation on their hands soon. In any case, I’ll catch you guys next week where we’ll hopefully get some more answers. See you!

    1. Haven’t read the source material, but Saya and Kirin better up their game if they want to stand up to those two behemoths. If they went at ’em from what we’ve seen of them so far, they’re going to get slaughtered.

      Should be fun, amirite? XD

  1. I’m not sure if I paid attention enough but… how is it fair that contestants get to use crazy good weapons versus small frys like the ones Julis and Ayato faced? Did I miss something? And the two “puppets” decked out in armor vs two normal students with just normal powers… seems a little unbalanced in restrictions to me o.o

    1. I think stuff like Ogre Luxes count as the student’s ability, since you need to be compatible to use them. Plus it’s the student’s own abilities that count the most. Just look at Kirin, she’s using a normal sword lol and she was number 1 in Seidokan for quiet awhile.

  2. If those were puppets then I am a talking dog! Theye are self-aware! How do they even count as weapons control by Hernesta and the other when they completely by their own will? Those two are pair of Terminators with a few screws loos and enough fire power to kill Jhon Connor a million times over. By the way, I love extravagant software Hernerta used in Aldy, the guy is quiet the large ham.

  3. This anime surprises me more and more as it goes along. It and Rakudai Kishi began as pretty much the same exact show frame by frame, moved along rather similarly, then branched off. Rakudai was the first to enter “objectively good” territory, but Asterisk managed to follow pretty damn well and I think I might actually like Asterisk more at this point in a good number of ways.

It’s this episode that made the idea that this anime will have two cours into a truly appealing idea. I’m genuinely surprised, these anime managed to take what was good about their respective genre and amplify them in two separate ways, but not too much as to be overbearing somehow.
