「険しき道」 (Kewashiki Michi)
“A Hard Road”

After taking a week to figure out what it wants to do, it feels like Kumamiko has managed to hit its stride.

Round 2 – Uniqlo

After last week’s somewhat disjointed attempt at getting some laughs out of us, I think this week was a lot more successful with what it tried to do. Dropping the huge breaks in-between jokes in favor of hitting us directly, I was chuckling quite a bit throughout this episode. Starting with the first half of the episode, I’ll never get over just how hard this show pushes the idea that Machi is some backwards bumpkin who’s a few generations behind the current trends. Highlighting minidiscs this week, I was actually kind of surprised that she actually knew what it was. Because, if we’re being honest, I don’t think minidiscs really took off.

Where things really started to get good though was then Machi finally embarked on her journey to Uniqlo. First, I wonder how they got the rights to actually use the store’s name! Especially for a big global brand like Uniqlo! Second, was I the only one who wasn’t too surprised to see everything fall apart for Machi? Seeing how she actually knew about the Uniqlo (even though she was wrong about what kind of store it was), I thought it’d logically follow the story would hit us somewhere else. But even with my mind thinking about it, there’s no getting over seeing a ridiculous looking bike explode into a ton of little pieces.

But even when you thought the jokes were over, the show managed to squeeze in just a little more right when we thought Machi had managed to overcome all the crap fate through in her way. With Yoshio and Matsu taking a prime opportunity to poke some fun at Machi, it felt like a rather fitting ending for her wonky escapade.

Looking Ahead and Thoughts

Luckily, in the end Machi managed to make it to Uniqlo and get some of that fancy HEATTECH wear. While the weather outside looks way too hot to wear something like that (especially under a Miko’s outfit!), hopefully things will go a bit more smoothly for her next time.

In any case, I’ll maybe catch you guys next week. I’m still deciding on this one. Also, sorry for the late post! For some reason I thought this show was a Wednesday show when it was really a Sunday show. Whoops.

  1. So, is this going to be a gag challenge of the week Anime?

I’m still trying to understand this show – I get the feeling that
it’s really making very subtle pokes at Japanese culture and
that maybe I’m too removed to get the full depth of the jokes.

Anyway. it’s an entertaining watch – wonder if she’ll ever get
    to go to that school…

  2. I’m pretty sure that in these instances, they’re paid a sum to advertise the brand. Also, I dunno, I don’t think I’ll watch it but the character designs look nice. Also minidiscs, lol.

  3. I love this kind of comedy where there’s a long build up to the final joke, gathering giggles here and there until the hilarious climax. It makes it even funnier to watch.

Btw, nice CGI Bike. It is from the same studio that do the cgi Bikes for Bakuon?

but then, the 2nd part was a bit “confusing” as if she is do some product placement for the shop

    Curious? Go watch it
