「叛逆の騎士」 (Hangyaku no Kishi)
“Knight of Rebellion”

After weeks of being rather negative toward Apocrypha, this week’s episode finally did it for me.

General Impressions

While I try my best not to be biased toward certain characters, I’d be lying if I said Mordred wasn’t my favorite character (with Frankenstein’s Monster being a close second). As both the figurative and literal “Saber” of the show thus far, it’s been a little depressing thinking about just how little we’ve seen of her/him. Luckily, this week’s episode did a fine job of rectifying that as we got a much closer look at Mordred’s past and the internal struggles that he/she is dealing with. Between the parental issues to trying to discover his/her identity, I think I’m most excited to see how the story fills in the gap between what we saw today and Arturia impaling Mordred during that battle on the hill. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for the story to fill in all the holes.

Moving on to the bigger problem at hand, boy was it fun to finally see all sides of the Greater Holy Grail War finally interact with each other. Not only did we get an epic battle between Mordred and Jack the Ripper, who thought we would see Fiore actually leap into combat? As someone who the story has painted as “weak” due to her lack of legs, never would I have imagined her having some kind of Doc Ock inspired suit that would allow her to nimbly move around the battlefield. That said, if we’re talking about surprising and unexpected battle skills, Shishigou’s ability to understand the battlefield and use whatever he had at hand felt just as good if not better. I mean, when was the last time you saw someone hop into a car and genuinely slam into someone? Hopefully Fiore manages to make it through this one since she hasn’t really gotten an opportunity to show us just what she stands for and I’m not sure if I’ll be able to handle whatever happens to Caules afterwards.

Anyways, with the story in the midst of its first true battle and all sides on edge, I can’t wait to see just where things go next week. If I were to make a guess though, I have this feeling that Ruler is going to step in at some point and force some type of ceasefire due to some kind of rule being broken. In any case, I’ll catch you guys next week — see you then!

P.S. Please avoid posting spoilers in the comments! If you need to talk about spoilers, please use the spoiler tag (instructions above the chat box)! Thanks for your understanding and if something needs to be changed, feel free to ping me on twitter at @rctakaii and I’ll get it fixed asap.

  1. Oh man… Why does Nasu do this to me? Why does Nasu give me fun and amazing females who deserve much better than the lives they got when they become Sabers? I’m speaking of Altira, Nero, Altera and now Mordred.

Before continuing, Altira is what Type-Moon is calling the King Arthur instead of Arturia. Yeah, I don’t get it either, but that’s apparently what Fate/Grand Order people/gamers have been told.

Also, OMG we got to see Rhon… Rhon… Rhonsomething lance being used! I’ll just call it Rhon, but Rhon is perhaps one of the more interesting weapons that Altira has. I heard about the backstory of Rhon and it is quite interesting that Altira picked Excalibur over Rhon.

As for your guess Takaii, I’m going to say that the Red Assassin creating the Hanging Garden of Babylon is probably the “rule breaking” that you are thinking is about to happen. I mean, if it is supposed to make the Black team feel utter despair, I’m sure it’ll violate some rule.

      1. To be fair, it was Nasu who recommended Seig to be the MC.
The idea was using a male homunculus because at that point all were female.
They want to show how fucking expendable homunculi are to mages through the exciting history of the little homunculus who could.

  3. This flashback is awkward as hell where two obviously female characters are constantly referred to as male; it’s just extremely jarring and makes the whole thing seem ludicrous. Even ignoring that, this episode was moronic even by this show’s fairly low standards.

    SabrinaK
    1. While I don’t disagree, I’ve come to terms with it.

Arturia is supposed to be a man — therefore King Arthur (Him)
Mordred is supposed to be King Arthur’s son — therefore Prince/Him

      Even though.. both are female.

      Fate Logic ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      1. It goes far beyond gender in this case, Arturia in the original Fate Stay Night only saw herself as a King, not even as a person, where Mordred sees helself as a knight and heir to King Arthur, that´s why get so pissed off at being called women since they discarded a good chunk of themselfs.

        haseo0408
    2. Well it’s something the original Fate suffered from already. In all flashbacks featuring Saber, they referred to her as “he”.

They explained this literally with “A wizard did it!”.
Merlin put a glamour on Altria so everyone percived her as male. So for all the people seeing her, she was a guy, as all thier senses told them so.
Morgan le Fay who also was a mage, could see through this of course. This is why she didn’t seduced Altria like in the story, but stole some blood for creating a clone instead. I guess she also hid Mordred’s gender that way.

      Kyral
      1. Didn’t Morgana see through it because she was her cousin or sister? She obviously would not know Arthur’s actual gender in that case. Also didn’t Guinevere and Lancelot also know that Arthur was actually a girl. I do wonder though if Mordred ever found out about Arthur’s secret.

        dean
      2. The only people that knew about Arturia´s true gender were originally King Uter, Merlin, Kay, and Morgan. After she became King only Agravain and Bedivere discovered Arturia´s secret, Mordred never discovered the secret.

        haseo0408
    1. This girl can summoned as Berseker because she´s a complete blood knight, even among the Knights of the Round Table none could match her ferocity in the battlefield, so yeah, you could say she´s like a lion just like Arturia. It helps the fact she has dragon blood runnig thruog her viens just like Arturia.

      haseo0408
      1. – couldn’t beat Arash
        – was going to suicide blow herself up against him
        – only killed a tired and badly wounded Gawain after he had a long exhaustive fight with Lancelot
        – is also dame dame level retarded

Still better then her “dad” though.

        ssjokg
    2. Don’y worry mordred. Even if you werent acknowledged by the king you are still luckier.

You got a badass and skilled master but not ruthless and cares for you. Meanwhile the king’s luck for master is like e rank. All she has is a gary stu that gives no fuck about her and an autistic idealist as masters.

      DarknessSerpent
  4. Ginobi47
    1. Because Mordred is an edgy actual faggot who murdered her own father and destroyed his kingdom because she was a selfish and retarded little bitch. Not really heroin material. More fitting for the villain.

      Vali-Lucifer
      1. Nah what doomed the kingdom was Agravain dying, who we even see in this episode in the flashback. He kept the Round Table together through the power of SPITE (For him). Then Lancelot killed him and Artoria had to trust Mordred to run the kingdom as Regent because the remaining members were worse than him/her at it.

        TheVoid
      2. Based on the flashback, I’d put most of the blame on Le Fay. She definitely seemed to be the “Palpatine” to Mordred’s “Anakin” – constantly boosting her ego with talks about being Altira’s child, how she should be king, and so on, so by the time Mordred confronted Altira about it, the rejection just broke her.

        HalfDemonInuyasha
    2. Are people in this thread baiting or is there something I’m not getting? Mordred is literally just a more bratty, angsty and insufferable version of Saber. There’s nothing redeeming about her that isn’t derived from the fact that she’s another Saber clone.

I mean come on I couldn’t have been the only one who laughed and cringed at her flashbacks in this latest episode.
      >I’LL KILL YOU ARTAAAAAH REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

      Tomboy
  5. Poor, poor Mordred, Morgan Le Fay really did a number on her, manipulated that poor girl since she was young, decieve her using her own dreams to down right brainwash her at the end to destroy everything she was loved. Arturia cannot be blamed either, she was a victim in that tragedy as well; Artoria gave up her identidy as a girl, her happiness, her freedom, her future, all to give her people a bright future, and the thanks she gets was betrayal at every corner, even her own Knights of the Round Table didn´t even bother to try to truly know her (only Belvider was a true nice guy according to the Gardens of Avalon novel, the rest were selfish pricks if you ask me), seems to me that Camelot was full of ungrateful bastards, as Arturia herlself said it in the Fate Route of the original game: the King protected her people but the people did not protect their King.

At the end of the day Morgan was the true monster of the tale, well it fits because Merlin mentioned in the Gardens of Avalon novel that Morgan Le Fey was more a eldritch abomination by the end of her life than human, all fueled by her envy of her sister, that´s just insane.

Of all the people, I would like to see dead in this anime, this idiot is one of them. He reminds me of a certain retarded Kayneth who died because of how his arrogance, annoying sense of elitism, and Ill treatment to his great Servant sent him to the grave. We should noticed that Waver Velvet had become Lord El-Melloi II in this world, which implies that Kayneth died, AGAIN! Man, multi-verse must really hate him. So I should expect Gordes to be killed off. He has no redeemable features.

Otaku spotted. I wonder if Magi can learn spells from the internet?
Anyway, what computer is that? I would expect the kid to have a high quality flat screen computer monitor, since Gordes drove a fancy car, but his computer looks like some ugly antique.

    L002
    1. Looking at the phone Kairi was using and given Waver’s age, this is probably set around the same time as the original F/SN (in an alternate universe). F/SN was originally published in 2004, and I believe it was set around that time. LCD monitors existed, but they were not all that common.

That, or his sister beat him up and stole his allowance to built her spider mech.

Fun fact, I actually had to resort to the same procedure as Berserker when one froze up in front of me. Or may be it was the power switch, can’t really remember. It was a long time ago.

  7. I don’t know if its spoiler or not but I’m going ahead with it.

In Deen Stay Night and Fate Zero, Saber mentioned about several regrets she had in her past life. Is this one of them? Plus the final battle in her past life in Deen Stay Night, is this that battle?

Speaking of bitches….wow, some people in this comment section are just straight up cranky/bent out of shape. Like some of their frustrations is easily answered if they paid enough attention.

    1. Siegfried, Karna and Achilles are even more broken in power levels than Gilgamesh in terms of power, the divine armor they each used is enough to give most gods trouble and Shirou defeated Gil because his Unlimited Blade Works was the perfect counter to Gates of Babylon. Shirou couldn´t stand a chance in this Great Holy Grail War, twice as many Servants and Masters and most of the Heroes just plain cheated in the superpower lottery.

  13. I /want/ to watch Apocrypha properly, but based on what I’m keeping up with, aside from the good scene direction in the first episode, this has been a very poor adaptation of the novel. Not that the novel is without its big flaws, but the anime’s had a lot of incongruous details or lack thereof bringing it down in addition to not very refined fight animation.

From the comments I am reading, I can understand that people are saying Mordred looks unintelligent because of how she is playing with the cat but give her a break, I don’t think she had a decent parent that properly raised her. Not to mention, if anyone had seen Aho Girl, you understand that Mordred is smarter compared to the heroine of that anime

Notably, how is Mordred’s Master able check the bodies? I don’t think the police would casually let a stranger check dead bodies like he did. I can understand maybe he used hypnotic spells, but he must have at least done something to avoid the security cameras, meh

  15. Too many people die when they are killed 🙁

Especially the lovable ones. I still hope we get a FSN reboot where we can have an Illya, Medusa, and Medea route

That said, while playing FGO, I realized that they probably are the luckier ones despite the greater threat, on account of being able to get resummoned.

  16. What a waste.

As stated before, this series is just clumsy in its execution.

Red Saber was the only reason we watched this series thus far – having read a few summaries of her story online, she had amazing potential to carry this series; it is a story far more tragic and compelling than Arturia’s. But now it is clear that they have squandered a golden opportunity to save this series, instead opting for more dry and clumsy exposition. The story of Mordred should have been drawn out in separate flashbacks, revealing her aspirations and hopes as a loyal Knight – and a loving daughter – to her Sovereign and parent, Arturia, twisted tragically into hatred by her own rejection.

It also has the curse of being inevitably compared to Ufotable’s work, with all the subtlety and elegance of Fate-Zero and their version of UBW. They didn’t just draw on the source-material, they expounded on it beautifully – from Lancer’s tragedy to Arturia’s realization of her failings as a King.

How much could Ufotable have done if they focused on the perspective of Mordred?

    So much potential.

    So much wasted.

  17. In addition, someone translated some comments by original author’s novel, also scriptwriter of the anime, Yuichiro Higashide, from anime magazine Animage.

Animage: What kind of relationship does Astolfo have with Sieg?

Higashide: His feelings towards Sieg are passionate and frank. Incidentally, Astolfo doesn’t care about male and female gender differences at all. If he loves someone, whether they’re a man or woman is a trivial issue. If Sieg wished for it, he would have probably happily become his partner. Astolfo wholeheartedly believes that Sieg is the love of her life and love him as a man.

Ugh, disgusting. Not only is he a shota trap, he’s 100% gay.

    That’s pretty gay!
