Centaur no Nayami – 07

「初めての経験って恐怖と興味が共存… ライムだけどね. / 幼い頃に観たオカルト映画の恐怖は140%増しだよね.」 (Hajimete no Keikentte Kyoufu to Kyoumi ga Kyouzon… Rhyme Dakedo ne. / Osanai Koro ni Mita Occult Eiga no Kyoufu wa 140% Mashi Da yo ne.)
“First Experiences Are Scary and Fun All in One… Pardon the Rhyme. / Occult Movies You Watch as a Kid Are 140% Scarier.”

It always feels good to have episodes that coincide with the real life season. To balance out the Wintery holiday scenery of Sakura Quest, it was a relief to get back to the pool before the summer is 100% over. The public swimming pool was a great back-drop for learning about both how the main girls and Manami’s siblings interact and the standards that the world’s races have regarding swimming. Manami is a tough mother figure to her kitten sisters, the Chi-chans, largely because they’re the most keen on hanging out with everyone. Swimming at the deep-end or climbing all over everyone is an issue, but the episode handles everything calmly, and in good fun. The triplets are hurt, but Sassassul still pays them enough attention to offer them a fun time. Himeno’s little cousin Shino had a very cute moment with Manami’s youngest sister Sue as she helps her enjoy the pool despite being too delicate to get too wild in the water.

We also learn about how some of the races have an easier time swimming in deeper surfaces. Himeno and Shino weren’t able to swim on a decent level until they went in the deeper competitive swimming pool where the mermaids dive in. Speaking of mermaids, the episode revisted the mermaid/cat couple from Episode 2 in explaining how mermaids are able to get in and out of the water with assistance. Sassassul shone particularly in this segment as she won over Manami’s sisters who were fascinated with her mouth and got her on the first step to overcome her fear of water as a result of the water in Antarctica being a death trap. I was worried it would be a deeper issue for her, but her freaky feeling seemed to wash away as soon as she towered over the shallow end of the pool.

The horror story plot is to be continued in the next episode, but it isn’t as gripping to me because the AV club guy isn’t presented as likable. He’s shown as a creep that has to rely on others to help him get with a girl he likes through scary stories despite knowing she doesn’t care for anything other than realism. He also gets excited enough about Himeno’s help that he dives face-first into her breasts. He didn’t think any of this through, but it’s up in the air whether he’ll get a wake-up call in the next episode or if the girl he likes is secretly a fan of ghost stories. The most interesting part of it is the glasses guy in the corner who is more mysterious than he looks, but the second half was relatively weak compared to the first half’s cozy pool trip.

Can you imagine an imaginary menagerie manager imagining managing an imaginary menagerie?

I loved the flat chested joke “my species doesn’t breastfeed, what’s your excuse?”

    • August 22, 2017 at 5:53 amChoya

The set-up was bound to backfire on Kyouko and Nozomi. “Oh, you have the same chest size I do even though your species’ breastfeed”

Without assitance, you mean? She jumped herself out of the water.

She jumped out of the water, but the girls were confused about how she could get in and out before she made the leap. He was on the sidelines, but I’d imagine he was of better use getting her to the pool

The younger kids here are endlessly cute. But can someone remind me why it is that centaurs have to cover up the area above and between their front legs (what would be the chest/breast of a horse)? As we already know, their genitalia are between their rear legs.

I enjoy seeing the Chi-chan’s giving her sister a hard time, and being friendly with everyone. Their disappointment face as they are facing off with Manami as well as their running back and forth between Sassassul was cute.

This series has an odd mish-mash between human anatomy and mythological species anatomy. Where it looks like they cover up where humans would out of decency, but they would anatomically have different reproductive systems as per their mythological canon. Mermaids are in a similar situation where they have a small section of their hips exposed so you can see their human thighs even though mermaids are supposed to have a full tail from their hips below.

Maybe their genitalia aren’t located in the same place as horses.

      • August 22, 2017 at 1:25 pmWanderer

We know where a Centaur’s gentitals are. The girls already studied Hime’s a couple of episodes ago.

    • August 22, 2017 at 6:36 pmqwert

It’s probably just a fashion they adopted early on so things are less awkward around the other types of humans. If that’s the general location of genitalia on every other species it would likely be pretty awkward having it uncovered even if there’s nothing there. The boys in class already fantasize about Hime, imagine if from the front it looked like she wasn’t wearing any pants.

It could also be equivalent to how there are modest swimsuits (for us humans) that cover down to the thighs and even top of the arms. There likely are centaurs swimsuits that do not cover the front leg area, but are considered the equivalent of a string bikini.

For someone complaining about a waste of time, you sure have time to come back and check your own comment and throw more insults.

It IS a bit boring in terms of juicy stories, and the animation looks like everyone drew on 4″ x 6″ pieces of cardboard, but I love everything else!

The first story grabbed more than the last one, given how it’s goal was really to share different types of scary stories. It ended very anti-climacticly, with one of the most abrupt cuts to the end credits I ever seen.

The pool story was adorable. Instead of mentioning how cute Huey, Dewey and Louie are fifty times over, I’ll just say I would spend days watching them play around me. I imagine it would be hectic to actually look after them. It would need 3 Me’s in order to rangle them all, since as Manami says “if there were 3 of me, you’d have 3 times the nagging and that wouldn’t be fun, would it??”

So THAT’S how centaurs put on clothes! :O

Liked the fact that they reined in the totalitarian vibe of recent episodes.

    This is an excellent show!
