The end of the year is here and it’s time for the 12th Annual Reader’s Choice poll. Do you have a favorite series you’d like to see win? Are you just curious to see what everyone else enjoyed this year? There’s no electoral college here. The anime with the most votes wins!

As per the usual, there will be two polls for you to vote on this year – one for regularly broadcast TV series, and another for OVA/movies. We’re asking you for your top 5 picks in each poll, which should stop the results from being heavily skewed towards the mega-popular shows. This year we have an astounding ~160 TV series and ~70 OVA/movies for you to choose from, so make sure you look over the entire list before deciding. Keep in mind that like all entertainment, anime is subjective. There is no one size fits all here. Please respect the opinions of others, even if you may disagree with them.

Criteria-wise, the following is what was used to decide what shows did (or did not) make it onto these lists:

  • For a regular broadcast TV series to be considered, it has to have finished airing in 2017 and fit in the general criteria for receiving a preview. The idea is that you can’t truly judge a series until it’s over, so series such as Mahoutsukai no Yome and Osomatsu-san Second Season will appear on next year’s poll. Series with another season coming but a clear stopping point in the one we’ve already seen are included. This means the first season of 3-Gatsu no Lion will be included this year, while its second season won’t be until next year. Shokugeki no Souma: San no Sara will be pushed to 2018, as the remaining episodes of it’s third season will be aired as a split cour in 2018. At the same time, shows generally aired for all ages/kids were not included.
  • For OVA/movies, it has to have been released on Blu-ray/DVD in 2017 to qualify, ensuring that viewers outside of Japan have had a chance to watch it. This mostly pertains to theatrical offerings. The difference from TV series is that they don’t necessarily have to be complete to be included, since it can take several years for an OVA series to finish.

As far as we’re aware, the anime series list is complete, barring a handful of shows that are animated but unlike “typical” anime. The OVA/movie list is less so, but this is by design; there are lot of really niche OVAs that aren’t really worth considering and there is a tendency for series in this category to be delayed or released at different dates, so accuracy will vary greatly. If you feel there’s something that deserves consideration, isn’t listed, or is listed but shouldn’t be, please leave a comment or send Zephyr an email or tweet at him via @ZephyrRC and we’ll add it in as soon as possible. Please note that the first comment in this post will keep a list of shows added, so keep an eye on that before voting. Last but not least, here’s a special shout out to Cherrie for taking out time from her busy schedule to help compile the polls!

With that said, vote away.

Note: To give viewers more time to vote, the polls will close this year at 3:00 PM PST on January 4th, giving you the most time possible before the Best of Anime post comes out with the results. This means the 3:00 PM in the afternoon in PST or 11:00 PM GMT on the 4th.

  2. It’s surprising that there’s no overly popular anime like Sword Art Online, One Punch Man, or Re:Zero (I don’t consider Hero Academia to be overly popular and Shingeki no Kyojin season 2 was not as popular as the first season). Seems like best of 2017 will be more interesting.

    One Pinch Man
    1. OPM, SAO – sure. Re:Zero? It was a cult hit, but I would put its popularity about the same as Made in Abyss (actually, MiA was probably more popular based on the amount of comments its discussion threads received over at /r/anime).

      Zero
    1. Already mentioned by Zephyr above as to why it isn’t included. But basically the show in question has to conlude this year. The show doesn’t qualify under that criteria as the second half isn’t due to air until April.

  3. It’d be easier if it were a pick one choice. I genuinely can’t think of five shows that I thought were outstanding this year on that list. So I’m picking five that I enjoyed personally.

    Made in Abyss
    Hand Shakers
    Umaru R
    Youjo Senki
Love Live S2(Was torn between this and New Game)

Good luck, may the best show win!

    1. I feel this way as well. I can’t say that 2017 was a banner year for anime. Offhand, I can only see myself buying two of this year’s shows (Konosuba 2, Saekano 2), which is really low. And I guess that the fact that they’re both sequels doesn’t reflect well on the industry (or maybe it’s just me :). That’s two weak years in a row as far as I’m concerned (at least two). I also enjoyed Tsuki ga Kirei, Shuumatsu, and Little Witch Academia so those filled out my five votes. If it hadn’t been for its weird denouement, I might have included Youjitsu in there somewhere. Even Natsume didn’t really do it for me. Oh well, looking forward to the new year’s shows. Hope springs eternal.

  4. What a great year for anime. My votes went to:

    3-gatsu no lion
    Rakugo
    Boku no Hero Academia S2
    Tsuki ga kirei
    Mahoujin guru guru

I’m still missing a bunch of hyped up ones but well, I won’t be able to finish them anytime soon so I consider ti one as my final list. The only beatable ones are boku no hero and guru guru though.

    Youkai
  5. made in abyss
    my hero academia S2
    KonoSuba S2
    attack on titan S2
    blue exorcist S2

seems i’m rather mainstream lol.. but it’s probably bc i didn’t watch many series, especially originals, this year (boo to finals and employment).

  6. Made in Abyss for me was the highlight of this year in anime, even now I can’t get it out of my head !(maybe I should stop listening to its incredible OST)

    Second season/sequel was announced, can’t wait !

    Makoto
      1. Really ? I thought the 1st season stopped at chapter 23, that leaves us with 20 already published chapters past the 1st season now, maybe not so far from a 2nd season material of 12-13 episodes. (Yes, i’m resisting the temptation to read past chapter 23… a real ordeal !)

Anyway i prefer for them to wait and give us a proper sequel than just rush it just for profit.

        Makoto
      2. Yeah, so they’ll just barely have enough for a one-cour from the remainder if that number’s approximately right. After that, if they continue the trend of releasing a volume every year (it’s been taking progressively longer on each volume), it’ll be a while. But yeah, I also suppose it’ll be fine as long as they don’t rush it or try and do anything entirely original.

        Zephyr
  7. Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou was a very good watch with thoughtfulness,
Made in Abyss was really good especially the closing episodes,
Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon, Little Witch Academia, and Sagrada Reset.

  8. Out of curiosity, why is there script code going to lijit.com on this page? If I Google it, it seems to refer to browser hijacking malware.

(Noticed it because Tracking Protection in the browser prevented from poll from loading, which is a separate issue from the lijit.com resource.)

    1. They’re our ad provider at the moment. They did provide some shady ads from time to time a while back though, so that’s probably what you’re looking at. They’ve since changed hands though.

  9. So many to choose, but here’s my selections:
    My Hero Academia S2
Gundam – Iron Blooded Orphans S2
    Attack on Titan S2
    Blue Exorcist S2
    Tsuki ga Kirei (So cute)
    Movies/OVA’s:
    Cardcaptor Sakura (Of course)
    My Hero Academia
    Blue Exorcist
    Yu*Gi*Oh (Nostalgia!)
Now that I look every series over, it was a great year, and Random Curiosity did a great job of covering many of the shows. Happy New Year and thanks!!

  10. TBH, it was difficult enough to choose, since I saw 15 anime to piqued my interest and made me enjoy.
Cutting them down was challenging, but I made my choice.

I can’t wait for your Best of Anime 2017 post, since I was so excited for it, and I go here if the
poll is posted, so here I am!

Hope 2017 was a blast for all of you!

    1. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu ~Sukeroku Futatabi-hen~
    2. 3-gatsu no lion
    3. Made in Abyss (this one wins the Exceeded Expectations award, as it blew me away, especially the last few episodes)
    4. Shingeki no Kyojin Season 2
    5. Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2

It feels weird putting Shouwa and 3-gatsu on 1 and 2 since it feels like such a long time ago that I watched these. Heck, we’re busy with the 2nd season of 3-gatsu at this moment. Likewise for Konosuba S2, which also aired at the start of this year. Going into my selection of this years winners I didn’t know what I was gonna pick, mainly because the best series ended a good 9 months ago. Eventually (and quite easily tbh), I came up with 6 good candidates to vote on, of which Boku no HeroAca just missed out the top 5, and also made a list of honourable mentions which I thoroughly enjoyed.

    Best Movies/OVAs

    1. Koe no Katachi
    2. Kimi no Na wa.
    3. Kizumonogatari III: Reiketsu-hen
    4. Mahoutsukai no Yome: Hoshi Matsu Hito
    5. KanColle Movie

While I normally have a hard time picking anything from the movie/OVA section, this years’ movies made that exceptionally easy, with 3 AMAZING movies, Koe no Katachi, Kimi no Ma wa, and Kizumonogatari III all being contenders for the #1 spot in this category. I completed the top 5 with Mahoutsukai no Yome, because let me vote on next years best anime already, and KanColle because shipgirls.

  14. Made in Abyss is definitely on my list along with Boku no Hero Academia… but things get harder after that. There’s some hard decisions to be made here, If only I had more than 5 choices!

Out of curiosity, does -VANISHING LINE- count for this list? I was pretty certain Garo is continuing into 2018 with the second half airing directly after the first.

    Source for my reasoning: http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2017/12/03/garo-vanishing-line-keeps-it-classy-with-new-theme-songs

    1. We’ve traditionally excluded PG series from our previews, so it didn’t make it on the list. But as it does have appeal outside of the children age zone, it does qualify as an exception so I’ll add it in, thanks.

      Zephyr
  15. This year was crappy. Usually I have a hard time picking 5 because there are more than 5 that i usually like. This year, i have a hard time to pick up to 5. I had less than 5 favorite anime this year.

  16. [[My Fav Movie/OVAs of 2017]]:-

1-Kimi no Na wa (Makoto Shinkai strikes again, Nuff said XD)

2-Koe no Katachi (A wonderful heartwarming story about bullying, disability and regret, animated by Kyoani too -Kyoto Animation for those who don’t know- so there you have it)

3-BLAME! (Great use of anime style CGI, an enticing glimpse into the strange world of BLAME! manga)

4-Gantz:O Movie (Another style of CGI that goes for realism, looks amazing, wish we could get more of Gantz in this style, maybe a series of movies)

5-Genocidal Organ (A throwback to the 80s and 90s when there was a lot of mature/serious anime movies & OVAs)

    —————————————

[[My Fav TV Series of 2017]]:-

1-Made in Abyss (Amazing world-building, fantastic soundtrack, wonderful visuals, interesting characters .. watch it now)

2-Houseki no Kuni (The epitome of anime-style CGI, looks amazing and has fantastic character development, almost best of the season in terms of that, sadly it went under most people’s radars, so sad, i know because i almost missed it myself)

3-Little Witch Academia (Just the right amount of whimsy resulting in a colorful fun feel-good magical adventure by Studio Trigger, it’s Japan’s answer to Harry Potter, and i love it)

4-Kekkai Sensen & BEYOND (Packed full of style and zaniness as expected from the men behind Trigun/Gungrave and the director of Kyōsōgiga, so whatever Kekkai does it does it with a shit-ton of style and panache, it’s almost an art-form in an of itself)

5-Boku no Hero Academia 2nd Season (Grabs the whole old and tired shonen genre concept and elevates it to new heights, living up to the series own motto ..”Go Beyond, PLUS ULTRA!”)

    Hunter-Wolf
  17. Anime:
Knights and Magic, cause Erus ethusiasm for mecha is infectious.
Konosuba Season 2, cause I wish there was a third season so I can laugh and laugh again at totally not drunken Dungeons and Dragons campaign. Also Megumin best girl. Explosion!
Attack on Titan Season 2, cause they’ve set up for the actual action of season 3.
Youjo Senki, for best girl protagonist of the year. Damn you Being X!

    1. The movies did come first, but last I checked were not offered as an airing option for everyone to watch at the time as it was in theaters.

The TV broadcast of the series afterwards is what allowed fans overseas to watch it as well, making it equivalent to a BD/DVD release. I’d also rather not have almost duplicate entries as it’d cannibalize its own votes as well.

      Thanks for the note though.

      –> YGO Arc-V was added.
–> Hidamari was classified as a recap special and technically doesn’t meet all the requirements, but I’ll add it into the OVA/Movie list.

  18. One lesson I learnt from The Story of Art (written by the late E.H. Gombrich) is that an artwork can be great for some very good reasons even if we don’t like it. Taking this into account, here is my list of the best five anime series (in terms of their achievements, not because I like them most):

    1. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu 2nd season. It’s top notch in almost every aspect; had there not been a Boku dake ga Inai Machi, I think the first season of Rakugo should take the place of the best anime last year.
    2. ACCA 13. This is a tale for adult, and a well told one. Being a tale, the story itself does require some suspension of disbelief, but it’s stylish, smooth and charming.
    3. Just Because! Many people just hate this anime or find it boring, but I think it’s the best — not just one of the best — romance anime in recent years. Both Just Because! and Tsuki ga Kirei (aired earlier this year) excel in telling realistic stories with layman struggles and they both try not to be too dramatic, but Just Because! stands out more with its music, cinematic camera angles and atmospheric artworks.
    4. Youjo Senki. It’s just revisionist history in guise of a warring parallel world, but the production is truly superb and is on par with Rakugo.
    5. Juuni Taisen. The story itself is quite predictable, but its storytelling is textbook-solid and it is very strong in the character development department. And to my big surprise, even an undeveloped romance (not to be confused with unrequited love) can be very, very moving.

I didn’t include Made in Abyss in my list. It’s a well produced and solid show and I enjoyed the show very much, but other than the part that Nanachi asks Reg to help Mitty, the rest of the story is not that outstanding.

    The suffocated
    1. I thought that you were spot on with your Youjo Senki praise. I loved the antagonistic relationship between Tanya and “God”. They have to give us more than one season, they had it set up for it too.

  21. 1. Shoukoku no Altair – I don’t like this show, I’m in love with it. Anime that incorporates political intrigue and make it relevant to the character driven narrative are very rare. The main character is admirable and complicated because of his peace-loving nature and the necessity to be ruthless when the occasion calls for it. The world building is great and there are some wonderful Turkish background art. You learn a lot about politics and warfare from this show
    2. Made in Abyss – It had beautiful background art and a mesmerising soundtrack. Brutal at times and even though you knew something terrible was about to happen, it didn’t lessen the impact.
    3. Boku no Hero Academia S2 -This season was much better than the first in terms of content and it also focused on my favourite character, Todoroki Shouto. Sadly, for any series with a huge cast and when the protagonist isn’t your favourite, it can be trying waiting for your favourite character to be in the spotlight, again and BnHA is such a show for me, so I can’t say if season 3 will meet my expectations just the same as this season did.
    4. Tsuki ga Kirei – This show was optimistic with realistic portrayals of middle schoolers. The scene with the wind chimes was really pretty.

    Biggest disappointment:
Kujira no Kora wa sajou ni Utau – It had beautiful artwork that was wasted on a terrible narrative and characters that were generic, hard to connect with and some were gross.

    WarriorsHeart
    1. No. The new Kino series definitely wins the “biggest disappointment” award here. It’s a good show overall, but looks pale when compared to the old Kino series or to Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou (which has greatly surpassed my expectation). The mud whale is not even in the same league.

      The suffocated
      1. Agree, new Kino remake is nice and ok but Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou is way more “Kino” that it and captures the essence of the original Kino really well, it’s contemplative, at times haunting but at the same time beautiful.

Mud Whale has it’s beautiful visuals and music going for it, the story is interesting (in terms of world-building) but the characters are lackluster at best.

        Hunter-Wolf
    2. Kujira was definitely disappointing. Biggest disappointment for me was Shingeki no Bahamut: Virgin Soul, and to a lesser extent KADO: The Right Answer.

…more like KADO: The Wrong Answer. -__-

    1. Dammit. I knew there was a big series that was airing on an irregular schedule that was missing. Guess this was it. I’ve added it into the OVA list at the moment. Apologies and thanks for the catch.

      Zephyr
      1. Thanks for adding, it is listed on MAL as TV show, but because of the irregular schedule it’s actually quite hard to decide whether it should be considered as TV series or OVA. That’s just Shaft for you.

  22. Best TV Series:
Naruto: Shippuuden — Shouldn’t we ALL pay respect to this classic that we grew up with?
    Berserk
    Fate/Apocrypha
Little Witch Academia — Tied with Kemono Friends for the small children-oriented genre. No fantsy art works, but a very, very good story!

    Infini-T Force — Nostalgic.
Kemono Friends — A novel idea about explaining species extinction to children

  23. Just saw the Reader’s Choice Best of Anime for 2017. Whew! What A List! Unfortunately, it’s too long and too many for me to read the title and to remember the Anime. Would it be possible to provide a link to the Anime’s summary page? For me, seeing Anime’s summary page, would be a great help in deciding my 5 favorite Anime series for 2017. For 2018, any chance of increasing the list to 10 favorite anime?

Great Job for all the writers and anyone’s who helps with making Randow Curiosity a great website about Anime in 2017! Keep up the great work in 2018!

    Thanks in advance.

Watching quality anime until the eyes or the mind gives out.

    1. In regards to particular anime summaries, your best bet at this point would be to either look over our previews from each season or to go to a site like MyAnimeList or AnimeNewsNetwork to see individual entries for each show. The preview links would be up on the top right of the page.

As for increasing the number of choices, we do not have plans to increase the amount of possible choices at this time as we feel 5 provides a good balance in terms of giving us a true measure of what readers thought were the best of the season. The end results will show all the rankings of all shows though, so you can refer to that if you want a better sense of what other series ranked outside the top 5.

You’re welcome and thank you for visiting RC as always.

  24. Wow. This is the first time that I do not have a candidate for best anime 2017. For me, none of these animes this year deserves the award. I hope that you respect my opinion. I’ll just leave the poll to you guys and see what anime will win this year

    Ryuuzaki
  25. This season there doesn’t seem to be a particularly overhyped anime (I got caught up in the ReZero hype train as well), but it was surprisingly decent. My favourites were undoubtedly Sakurada Reset and Sangatsu no Lion. I also enjoyed the likes of Natsume Yuujinchou (good as always), Tsuki ga Kirei, and the light-hearted Net juu no Susume. Acca 13 wasn’t too far below either.

      1. These were my 5 votes:
        Uchouten Kazoku 2
        Tsuki ga Kirei
        Sakura Quest
        Houseki no Kuni
        Made in Abyss

I would add Shuumatsu and ACCA-13 if there was more room and Princess Principle as Honorable mention.

        sadamitsu0
      2. How so!?, Naruto was mentioned only twice by people here meanwhile Houseki was mentioned at least five times (including my mention), the only problem is that it got exposure a little late in its run, as it gets mentioned more and more in lists of “best anime of 2017” by youtubers and online anime blogs it will be getting the exposure it really deserves.

        Hunter-Wolf
  26. While Made in Abyss was not my favorite series (I think that was Shingeki season 2), its final episode would be my choice for “best episode of the year”.

    Shingeki no Kyojin Season 2
    Made in Abyss
Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2

    1. Yeah due to the release of the AOTY post and the upcoming season clashing we had to close the polling a little earlier last year unfortunately. This year the slightly pushed preview caused us to push the poll, so I wanted to give back some time rather than have multiple days less. Glad you could get in on this one as a result.

      Zephyr
  28. Actually naming the top 5 is tougher than I expected, but here you go:
    – Rakugo
    – MIA
    – Tsuki ga Kirei
    – 3gatsu no Lion (a bit cheating since my feeling for S2 also plays a part)
    – Sukasuka

    Zeroyuki92
  29. 160 series, and only allowed to pick 5? Quite a frustratingly limited selection. Picking 10 would be just 6.25%

I managed to vote for just 5, but I wouldn’t call them my top 5; just the 5 that I got to before I ran out of votes. It’s not worth trying to refine it any further.

  30. 2017 was a mixed of preferences for me, had some of them dropped out in the middle and all; plus there were not much movies and OVAs that are to my liking, but i think i kinda enjoyed most of the animes last year.

Here are my personal best list of 2017 animes:
