「オレの貞操がピンチになった件について。」 (Ore no Teisou ga Pinchi ni Natta ken Nitsuite.)
“About the Time My Chastity Was in a Predicament.”

More than last episode, this is the episode when I can begin to feel the rush. A lot goes on during this episode, and side character like Itou are reserved solely for helping the main couple, whereas the doctor doesn’t even rate a name. The nice thing is that, even though the rush is more evident, it hasn’t gone off the rails yet. It’s still working, even if everything outside of the main two (the world, the other characters) is barely sketched out.

This episode had to do with communication issues between the main pair, as is only fitting for a romantic anime. Communication issues are the go-to move of this genre, because without them everything would be too easy. This time it has to do with the aforementioned doctor, and whether they should bang or not. Unlike the show I’m going to blog next (welcome back, Harem King), it’s imminently reasonable that Tsutsui wouldn’t sleep with Iroha this time, because he is treating her as an actual person (outside of some sleep deprivation-induced narcissism) rather than an object to get his rocks off with. Also, he’s a virgin and scared. I feel him. The first time can be a lot to handle. Which is what she said, hur hur hur.

Probably my favorite moments were: (1) when Iroha lied about dating the doctor and not being a virgin, but then immediately regretted it when she say Tsutsui’s face; (2) the mother’s and little brother’s reactions; (3) and how Tsutsui managed to get out of his own way and give her a good present in the end. The mother was undoubtedly the star of the episode, loved her palpable astonishment and shipper-on-board status, but I also liked how much of a teenage relationship these too have. It feels like they started dating just because they wanted to, and they’re feeling things out together. That’s good! That’s how a lot of relationships, and especially first/high school relationships, actually work. Nice to see characters just figuring it out together.

I also got a chuckle out of what a teenage boy Tsutsui is. Instead of enjoying the relationship while it’s happening, he’s worrying about the fact that it can’t (I guess) last once she moves away (she’s never said how far she’s moving though). From my more seasoned point of view, I’ve long since accepted that most relationships won’t last forever, so it’s better to enjoy them while they’re there. Half a year isn’t bad! But it’s relateable for a teenage boy with stars in his eyes for his first girlfriend. The rush might be on, but they’re still hitting some nice notes.

I’m still not sure whether I’ll continue with this—it’s pretty nice, but it’s a stacked season and I still worry about the rush—so I’ll either see you here next week or on a potential finale post in several more weeks past that’s time. Cheers!

  1. Shame that it’s gonna be a rushed adaptation. Was really hoping for the anime to expand upon the really rushed ending of the manga, but at this rate that’s just idle hope v.v

  2. Midway thru episode 2, and the thought just struck me. Is this going to be another of those cry my eyes out anime – because the girl have limited time left and live her life to the fullest?
I am a sucker for these type of gambare anime.. think of KimiUso and Taiyou no Uta and One Liter of Tears

    1. Hoods Entertainment is the main studio behind this. It’s the same one that gave us the dumpster fire known as Märchen Mädchen. I wonder if there was any collateral damage from that mess that affected the production for this show.

      1. Honestly, I doubt that’s the main factor. It’s the rush, or really what the rush is symptomatic of. If the production team really cared about making this a good adaptation, they’d have put up enough money for 2-cour, right? But they clearly don’t. The studio is probably working with a third of what their Congress has promised far less budget than they’d need to do it properly (sorry saw Hamilton recently), and any animation woes are just another symptom of that. Honestly, they’re doing a good job so far given the constraints they’re under.

  3. Well, some stuff(probably mainly side stories) could get cut short or skipped later on but so far actually, there has not been much of rush. At least as for the relationship between the main couple, I can say it has been well adopted.

I would say this series should not be dropped,

    1. Yeah, as usual, I don’t know the source material, but I’d say that unless other stuff is VITAL towards building the main relationship, then as long as the relationship itself – the main focus of the series – remains intact without going off the rails somehow, then that’s what is most important for me.
