「憂鬱なクリスマス」 (Yuutsu Na Kurisumasu)
“Melancholy Christmas”

Why can’t we get two episodes of Wotakoi a week instead of one?

General Impressions

Man, this week’s episode was all kinds of cute. Slowing things down by stretching out our sense of time with lots of Christmas time talk, it was great to see just how different our two main couples are. Be it how they handle their struggles to something as simple as how they go about celebrating Christmas, it never fails to amaze me just how well this show handles relationship building.

Starting with Naru and Hirotaka, I love how they’ve continued to be the perfect embodiment of an anime/game/otaku loving couple. Because as awkward as they can be when it comes to the romantic stuff, it’s all worth it when we get to see Hirotaka activate boyfriend mode. As the one who takes the initiative and tackles problems head on instead of letting them fester, it just feels so good knowing that there’s a really warm and caring individual underneath that stone-cold face. But don’t let me take away anything from Naru who also does her best at not taking issues and turning them into full blown problems. A relationship is a two-way street and her ability to also partake in the discussion is just such a breath of fresh air that together the two make a couple that you can’t take your eyes off of.

Shifting gears to Kabakura and Hana, it’s nice to see a more standard couple balance things out. As two strong willed individuals, it makes sense that they’d butt heads more often than others, but watching them come back from the brink of mutually assured destruction is probably where their charm really shows. It varies each episode on who takes the first step, but I think Kabakura is the one who really did a fantastic job this week. Making up for his huge mistake of not doing anything with Hana for Christmas the year before, it was cute to see him do something so lovey-dovey when you’d assume he’d be the last to do so. Between working his ass off while ingesting way too many energy drinks to preparing a reservation at a real fancy looking place at least 6 months in advance, I don’t think there’s much you could really ask of from your significant other. But as if that wasn’t enough, we got to see Hana return the favor by getting something that any fan knows they would love.

God, can next week just be here? After another fantastic episode, I can’t wait to see just where things go as our couples continue to get closer and closer. In any case, I’ll catch you guys here next week where we’ll hopefully get to see an even better episode. See you then!
