“Another Battle”

You know I wasn’t expecting too much from Overlord this week. A little battling, a bit of shrewd political scheming, heck maybe even some time honoured rape faces for spice. But this? Oh yeah, this I can get behind. Comedy, comeuppance, and the hint of even more to come; Overlord certainly knows how to never disappoint.

The immediate question at the end of last episode wasn’t so much whether our tank of a prince was going to screw with his orders but how. It was very clear from the start the guy wasn’t cut out for intelligence gathering, so lo and behold when first impressions wind up proving correct. Local residents don’t want to play ball? Nothing a bit of weaponized coercion cannot solve. To be fair though the concept of hostage taking isn’t that bad an idea for the circumstances (even if morally repugnant), armies throughout the ages (at least up until the end of World War II) have practiced it as a means to expedite victory, and given what the Kingdom knew of Ainz and his local ties there was no reason to doubt the strategy would fail here. The issue for our chad blondie is that he never banked on the village having the likes of Enri in charge. Carne village might have a good set of walls and a populace willing to defend it to the last man, but when it’s also got a girl capable of summoning a literal army to boot, well darling, that’s something you don’t want to mess with. Just ask Fred.

Beyond the joys of simple comedy, however, is understanding that Enri and her village defense this week were little more than a sideshow. As Ainz briefly summed up Carne village is effectively worthless, beyond a few people it doesn’t matter in the greater scheme of things and spending resources on its protection largely wasteful. What, doubted Papa Bones had truly gone full evil? Yeah time to correct that belief, especially when even the likes of Mare have bought hook, line, and sinker into the Demiurge-fuelled praise of ossified genius. The situation really shows just how far Overlord has come from its more parochial beginnings though, as where the defense of towns may have once dominated the discourse of certain arcs—i.e. Enri’s rise to village leader earlier this season, Clementine in the first season—now the game is all about establishing control at large. Enri and her village may have featured once again, but our big boy prince would have perished regardless of his success with that information gathering attempt because it’s all about armies now, and a nonexistent army is not a winning one.

Not like anyone is in doubt as to the thrashing awaiting the Kingdom in the near future of course, but you have to admit these poor bastards have no idea what’s coming. With goblins, men, and more spooky scary skeletons than you can shake a stick at ready to rumble, the upcoming slugfest is going to be glorious.

Author’s Note: I’ll be away doing oil sands engineering stuff next week from the 23-26 so next post may be delayed. I’ll try and get to it, but it all depends on how nice the camp internet (and my workload) will be.

  1. Nice touch that they added Ainz doing recon with the mirror of remote viewing (wasn’t mentioned in the LN) and Lupusregina now doing real time updates. As the LN kinda showing the battle at Carne and at the plains almost occurring at the same time.

Enri’s CG Goblin army though is kinda odd XD, but overall a appetizer ep.

  2. Another good and solid episode. My only gripe is Ainz still appearing clueless when it comes to what is happening. We established here (again) that Enri is special as she beats goblins in arm wrestling and able to shock Ainz by summoning a 5000 force army but he doesn’t seem curious to want to know why she is able to do so. Initially I thought he know of her abilities but nope. She more and more appears to be a wildcard. Still loving Ainz facial expressions though XD

    1. In vol.9 there’s a trivia explaining the horn’s requirement.
Below is I copy from reddit:

The user must be of a beginner-level; Lv.10 or under. Her character sheet clearly states that, by the end of Vol.8, she tops out at Lv.6.

The user must have at least 1 Job-Level in [General]. Since the item has “General” in its name (which the LN takes a moment to specifically point out), it makes sense that it was made for an actual General.

The user must be confronted by one or more enemies whose combined levels equal 100 or more. When she blows the horn, she is being chased by a Company of 100 soldiers. Now, even though they’re probably just peasant levies, and most of them might not even be over Lv.3, the fact is that their WAS exactly 100 of them.

      1. Actually the mounted soldiers are usually household troops and as such are better trained and equipped (as horses are very expensive to maintain) that was actually one of the reasons that Enri caught the eye of the guards at E-rantel way back in the earlier eps of this season ( as why would a girl dressed a peasant have a horse). So those mounted troops would prolly be in close to lvls 6 to 9

    2. she didn’t win the arm wrestle, you can see by the orc (jugem)’s facial expression after ‘losing’ that he threw it on purpose – presumably to boost her reputation and standing among the other villagers, ogres, goblins, etc.

    3. i think i have an solution why the Goblin General Horn work this way now.. It is the “different” mana that pours into the Magic Item. In Yggdrasil the Mana was coming from the Server and in this World the Mana is from the living beings.. the Mana “evolute” the Magic Items as he knows

or Erni is like him an old Player that lost her memory or was “reborn” into this world. Perhaps in the game she was some kind of female warrior capable oof leading. perhaps even an female clan leader druid? well, pick your her class that need a bit of her female muscles and leadership.. Paladin would fit good into this

    4. He might remain clueless because he doesn’t know about Enri’s abilities just yet. Lupus hasn’t really been upfront until now regarding the happenings in the village for example, and Enri’s command voice could easily have been overlooked by Lupus as a quirk not important enough for Ainz’s attention. I imagine if her growth was known Ainz’s reaction would have been completely different.

The ultimate army that is probably second place in Overlord, first place is Ainz’s army. Notably, since the Prince had an army of five thousand, then this may be the reason why Enri had summoned a large army. Would want to know how smart the Goblin Strategist is to compared to other smart characters. Goblin Strategist = Demiurge..

Anyway, obviously all of the Orcs are dead; I wonder how many human casualties were there.

Sort of wanted to hear how much the idiot prince was tortured. In anime, such as Tokyo Ghoul, Jason had plenty of screen time to torture innocent people. Sadly, bad guys don’t get screen time when they are tortured (well, I have yet to see such case).

Notably, Where was grandma Lizzie? I guess Nfirea hide her somewhere safe?

Anyway, I feel no sympathy for any of the Kingdom’s soldiers killed. If we noticed, some of them were willing to mercilessly chase down women and children (Enri’s group), and presumably rape and kill them. I would understand killing people, who are willing to fight (in this case it was the armed villagers and goblins fighting in the front), but even if it was a cruel order from the idiot prince, I would imagine a soldier, with a decent sense of morality, would just ignore fleeing women and children rather than chasing them down.

On the side note, the goblins Enri summoned are a sentient and permanent existence, wonder if Ainz’s goblins are the same.

    1. well based on the LN Lupusregina tortured him for 30 minutes straight before finally killing him off. If you’d want an example of how she operates go watch the Clementine vs Pleiades Eye catches of the Ple ple Pleiades series. XD

    2. “obviously all of the Orcs are dead” Huh?

“Where was Grandma Lizzie?” I believe that she stayed behind to protect the pharmacy lab.

“the goblins Enri summoned are a sentient and permanent existence” Which brings up the question on how Carne Village is going to feed another 5000 goblins, especially with winter coming.

      1. Well, I didn’t see any orcs alive. The anime didn’t show it.

Anyway, I am sure Ainz can lend some undead to help with cooking and feeding. I would be surprised if magic can’t help with growing LOTS of food.

        Greed
      2. also right now there are many fresh corpse on the battlefield.. villagers and soldiers.. so i do not think Ainz-samas underlings in task to grew his undead army would miss this chance

    1. i would change the appearance of them.. Here in the episode they introduce their Squadron with “we are the blabla under the command of General blabla”… i would changed it so, that all of them get zoomed into an corner of the picture.. so 5 Introductions 5 corners/windows on the screen.. “we are the blablabla Squad”.. would every one speak.. to speak then all with one voice “we are under the direct command of General blabla”.. give this introduction more “Wummmssssss” (power)

remember the ears are capable to see things that are invisible for the eyes…in Knight of Sidonia the sound of heavy steel Mechas moving and so on..

Redcaps. Those are a pain in the rear no matter which D&D you’re playing. They’re not goblins to sneeze at, they can harass even a well-rounded high-level team. DC Heroes Online (or was it City of Heroes?) had some annoying Redcaps as well.

Here we have another “you’re going to die no matter what” situation. I would have thought Aniz would tell his minions to let the Prince go to warn the others to not come back.

  5. I do have to say that Madhouse is being quite pragmatic about the anime adaptation. The Overlord light novel is quite exposition heavy sometimes so they cut bits out for better flow. Sometimes it works (like this episode mostly) and sometimes it doesn’t (Brain’s first duel with Shalltear). Still I have to say they make Barbro despicable enough for us to cheer his death even though the anime incarnation of Barbro is much, much nicer than his light novel counterpart even if only by omission. We do not get to see his jealousy of his younger brother, his plan to rape Nabe through the use of his royal prerogatives, his intention to pretty much purge all of his supporters once he becomes King or him offering a quarter of the Kingdom to Ainz if Ainz would help him seize the crown (which would likely involve deposing his father and killing off his siblings).

Yeah, you heard that right. The anime did away with 90% of Barbro’s worst antics and he’s still that unpleasant.

Still I have to compliment Mikako Komatsu (Lupusregina’s seiyuu) for a good job this episode. She managed to make the “Sadist with the Smiling Mask” a reality and her quick switching between tones really sold that aspect of Lupusregina’s character.

  6. Why you could summon this big Goblin Army? Well, because she done “faction” with the Goblins already had. She gain their Trust, respect and even treat the Ogers well.. Well, they had an own House and such. She embedded the Goblins in the Village life and the old ones…

So with time, she rank up her Faction with Goblins into an General, perhaps she is even “Admiral” rank now

    1. I was assuming he could watch but could not hear the conversation. If the village had decided to go against Ainz, the outcome might have been very different. As it was, after they handled most of the army, he let Lupusregina clean the rest up.

      touit
    1. That was the first thing which came to mind, not including the issue of housing and social order. It’ll be fascinating to see if it’s dealt with in some manner later on, or if the goblin army will simply up and disappear because reasons.

    2. You know one of the things I noticed was how environmentally responsible
the village seems to be – for example the wall surrounding their village.
A lot of lumber, but yet the surrounding forest seems to be largely intact
(I didn’t see a bunch of stumps nearby). Which (should) mean they went
some distance to get the lumber and haul it back. So, yeah, it’d be
interesting to see how this huge army is fitted into their village considering
they outnumber them 100x or so…

  7. gotta love Ainz getting surprised by events and then pretending to be “all according to plan”
anyway, all hail Enri, the Glorious Goblin Generel
she might take E-rantel now for Ainz and as a base to support her newly acquired army…
also Lupusregina has literlaly killer facial expressions 😛
and that prince was too dumb to live
not because how he handled the village, but because he thought using hostages against Ainz would work
apart from 4 people well secured by Lupusregina (who in the end didnt have to intervene anyway) all villagers were expendable to him
also the Goblin Strategist looks lke Sun-Tzu of greenskins 😛

  8. Was rereading the novels and one thing that was an interesting difference between the lightnovels and the anime was that the light novels actually mention that the walls surrounding the village are made of stone where-as the anime has those same walls made out of wood. Might just have been an animation decision to make it easier on the animators but still an interesting difference between the two walls.

  9. Actually, with this Carne isn’t exactly not worth keeping anymore. Demiurge will likely make Enri’s rise to being the Goblin General mean something profound and special. Thereby making Carne be a necessary place to keep around (other than just the potions).

After all, it’ll probably become a town where Goblins, Orcs and Humans co-exist, as Ainz will want to study Enri now. I can also buy it as being the reason why there won’t be any hardships either, because it’ll force Ainz to actually feed Enri’s army and keep them around. …though, knowing Ainz, that isn’t going to be for free, so he’ll get Enri to become an actual General in his own army.
