Spring Season 2006 is right around the corner, and I’ve finally made my picks for the series that I’m going to watch. Before I go into the list, I do have to say that there are tons of shows this upcoming season (estimated 70+) and that this list comprises maybe one-fourth of that. Of the shows I mention, odds are I’ll only end up blogging around eight or nine of them (plus the four series that carried over from last season).

For a more complete listing that includes the shows carrying over, see the Spring 2006 Schedule page (or the table version).

Note: All times are given in a 24-hour, relative-day format where times are extended to show which day they belong to. For instance, Friday morning at 1:30AM would become Thurday at 25:30 to show that the episode aired late Thursday night.
By no means is this list complete, these are just the series I watch/am planning to watch. Check out MOON PHASE for an entire listing, syoboi’s calendar for specific air-times, and AndrewLB’s Spring 2006 Wiki for who’s tentatively subbing what.

Joshi Kousei Girl’s High

Premieres April 3rd, 2006
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Mondays at 25:30
Airtime in U.S. (EDT, GMT-4): Mondays at 12:30

A comedy series about six girls together in an all girl’s high school sounds like a good premise. They’ve also got Kage Kara Mamoru! director Fujimoto Yoshitaka and some solid voice talent (like Mamiko Noto).
Simoun

Premieres April 3rd, 2006
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Mondays at 25:30
Airtime in U.S. (EDT, GMT-4): Mondays at 12:30

Now this show has a really interesting premise: girls who have to choose their gender when they become 17 years old. The title Simoun apparently refers to the airplane/machine that the girls pilot. I don’t particularly like some of the character designs, but I think this show has good promise.
Strawberry Panic!

Premieres April 3rd, 2006
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Mondays at 26:45
Airtime in U.S. (EDT, GMT-4): Mondays at 13:45

With all of the hype around this series, it really needs no introduction. The setting of a all-girl’s academy reminds me a bit of MariMite, except this show has plenty of yuri. That alone should be a good reason to watch this 🙂 I’m also just a bit curious on why Shimizu Ai is voicing two different characters.
Ouran High School Host Club

Premieres April 4th, 2006
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Tuesdays at 24:50
Airtime in U.S. (EDT, GMT-4): Tuesdays at 11:50

A Shoujo Comedy? Done by BONES? I am so there… I actually haven’t read the manga yet (but it’s apparently being put out by Viz), but this sounds like it has great potential. Now if only Maaya Sakamoto (who plays the female lead) did some singing too…
Makai Senki Disgaea
http://akaitsuki.net/
Premieres April 4th, 2006
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Tuesdays at 26:00
Airtime in U.S. (EDT, GMT-4): Tuesdays at 13:00
Information Links: ANN Encyclopedia, AnimeNfo
Based on the popular strategy RPG by Nippon Ichi, Disgaea is about Laharl, the prince of the netherworld, his (very funny) journey to become Overlord, and all of the characters me meets along the way. After seeing the Promo DVD, I’m very optimistic that this series will have the right mix of humor and action.
NANA
http://www.ntv.co.jp/nana/
Premieres April 5th, 2006
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Wednesdays at 23:25
Airtime in U.S. (EDT, GMT-4): Wednesdays at 10:25

Yazawa Ai’s current hit manga NANA, about two girls named Nana (one who is a punk rocker and the other who’s just looking for love), is now being made into an animated series. I’m most looking forward to the music that will come out of this series. If nothing else I hope this’ll be a lot better than last fall’s Paradise Kiss. The good thing is that the two series share almost none of the same cast or crew.
Inukami!

Premieres April 5th, 2006
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Wednesdays at 25:00
Airtime in U.S. (EDT, GMT-4): Wednesdays at 12:00
Information Links: ANN Encyclopedia, AnimeNfo
The description sounds like this show will have a pretty standard loser-guy-acquires-harem-consisting-of-girls-with-powers plot. I’m watching it because I’m a sucker for those type shows and because I hope that the comedy aspect plays more heavily than whatever romance aspects there are.
RAY THE ANIMATION
http://ray.tv/
Premieres April 5th, 2006
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Wednesdays at 26:00
Airtime in U.S. (EDT, GMT-4): Wednesdays at 13:00
Information Links: ANN Encyclopedia, AnimeNfo
A medical drama about a girl who has special “god’s eyes” that give her x-ray vision. Not really sure about this one because I’m not much into medical dramas, but it was a decision between this and Witchblade and this won out.
ZEGAPAIN
http://www.zegapain.net/
Premieres April 6th, 2006
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Thursdays at 18:00
Airtime in U.S. (EDT, GMT-4): Thursdays at 5:00

A Bandai/Sunrise mecha property, how could I go wrong? Seriously though, I’m drawn to this because I expect it to be a large budget show with a good dose of drama and mecha action. I’m not that impressed with the mecha design (which are rather fluorescent in color), but I doubt that’d bother me. Another plus for the series is that Akino Arai is singing the opening.
Kamisama Kazoku
http://www.toei-anim.co.jp/tv/kamisama/
Premieres May 18th, 2006
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Thursdays at 22:30
Airtime in U.S. (EDT, GMT-4): Thursdays at 9:30

A series about a son in a family of gods who falls in love. The character designs remind me a bit of Eureka Seven, and rightfully so since the character designer Maniwa Hideaki has worked on both shows. However, with a premiere date in mid-May, this show is still a ways away.
The Third ~Aoi Hitomi no Shoujo~
http://www.kadokawa.co.jp/fujimi/sp/thethird/
Premieres April 13th, 2006
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Fridays at 24:30
Airtime in U.S. (EDT, GMT-4): Fridays at 11:30
Information Links: AnimeNfo
A spunky girl goes on a journey in a brutal desert world. It sounds interesting enough, but I’ll be honest: I’m watching this show because it’s in the same timeslot as SHUFFLE!, HanTsuki, and now Shinigami no Ballad. In other words, WOWOW has a fairly good track record and I’m willing to try whatever they air.
xxxHOLiC
http://www.tbs.co.jp/holic/
Premieres April 6th, 2006
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Thursdays at 25:00
Airtime in U.S. (EDT, GMT-4): Thursdays at 12:00
Information Links: ANN Encyclopedia, AnimeNfo
The first of the two CLAMP series I’m watching this season, xxxHOLiC is a story with supernatural themes about a special boy named Watanuki who ends up working for a witch named Yuuko in a modern day setting. The manga has some crossover with Tsubasa Chronicle, but I doubt that the animated version will do anything special with the other series since they’re airing on different channels (TBS for this and NHK for Tsubasa). Also, Suga Shikao is doing the OP to this series. He sang several of Honey and Clover’s insert songs as well as the xxxHOLiC movie theme.
Nishi no Yoki Majo Astrea Testament

Premieres April 7th, 2006
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Fridays at 25:45
Airtime in U.S. (EDT, GMT-4): Fridays at 12:45

a.k.a. The Good Witch of the West. I’m not very familiar with the original novels but it sounds like it’s got a good deal of fantasy and maybe romance. If it’s got good animation (and backgrounds as good as the ones on the website), this show could have a lot of potential.
Tsubasa Chronicle
http://www3.nhk.or.jp/anime/tsubasa/
Second Season Premieres April 29th, 2006, Series Blog Archive
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Saturdays at 18:25
Airtime in U.S. (EDT, GMT-4): Saturdays at 5:25
Information Links: ANN Encyclopedia, AnimeNfo
I watched and enjoyed the first season. If they can keep the same level of quality they had for the Outo Country arc for all of the second season, I’ll be happy.
Himawari!

Premieres April 8th, 2006
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Saturdays at 24:30
Airtime in U.S. (EDT, GMT-4): Saturdays at 11:30
Information Links: ANN Encyclopedia, AnimeNfo
A comedy about ninjas, now where have I heard that premise before? I have a feeling that this series will lean more romance than comedy, but we’ll see. The ninja outfit designs look rather unique, and eufonius is singing the ending.
Soul link

Premieres April 1st, 2006
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Saturdays at 25:35
Airtime in U.S. (EDT, GMT-4): Saturdays at 12:35

I’m sure all of the SHUFFLE! fanboys, myself included, are watching this series just because it’s a work by Navel. The description on the official page makes it sounds a lot like a space-academy-action type series, but I’m hoping for some good character drama too.
Kiba
http://www.ki-ba.com/
Premieres April 2nd, 2006
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Sundays at 8:30
Airtime in U.S. (EDT, GMT-4): Saturdays at 19:30
Information Links: ANN Encyclopedia, AnimeNfo
This seems like it’ll be pretty average shounen action, especially since it airs in the morning. There are some stunning and vastly different locales drawn up, but I doubt the series will look quite that good. Still, Kiba seems like it’ll be pretty big budget, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
School Rumble Ni Gakki
http://www.school-rumble.net/
Premieres April 2nd, 2006
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Sundays at 25:30
Airtime in U.S. (EDT, GMT-4): Sundays at 12:30

I’m highly anticipating the second season of the popular school comedy-action-drama after having watched the incredible quality OVAs. More Yakumo and Eri please!

  1. Kiba, Himawari, Tsubasa Chronicles, xxxHOLiC, School Rumble, Zegapain and Disgaea definately. I’m wondering whether to watch Witchblade or not as well as Utawarerumono. .hack//ROOTS seems pretty interesting, but seeing that I didn’t like .hack//SIGN that much, I’ll probably not watch it. Oh and Digimon SAvers too. A fifth season after a 3-year-absense. Wonder what they’ll come out with. I might watch an episode or two, just to see what they’ve come out with XD

  2. Looking forward to Soul Link.

While i am a big fan of XXXholic manga i am not looking forward tot he anime. They just finish vol7 and has started hinting of a darker storyline. Qithout spoliing i am afraid that the anime is going to go side track simply do to the fact that the manga has just start on the main storyline and has yet to reveal all the secret behind it. Due to that the naime people will have to come up with their own stuff which will suck.

    XellOS^_-
  3. There’s just too many xD toooo many to pick! I’d pick Soul and Sch Rumble definitely as the next starting shows to watch. I hope some of these harem/shoujo/romance series are as good as some of the ones we have seen in the past.

  4. after looking at moonphase and andrewLB’s wiki, my head’s ready to explode with all the new shows this season. the only ones i can definitely say i’ll watch are tsubasa s2, school rumble s2, soul link, disgaea, tawarerumono, .hack//roots, xxxHOLiC, and digimon. i’ll try the rest on a trial basis to see if they are any good. god, i will have NO free time this spring watching all this anime. goodbye life!

  5. Man I really wanna check out Joshi Kousei Girl’s High if ANN is correct in stating that it’s an adaptation of the manga High School Girls by Toma Oshiwa – I have volume 1 of that manga (and found that the character names all match!) and it’s chock full of sick humor, but the real kicker is that all the events in the manga are based on the author’s real life experiences :O. example Show Spoiler ▼

  6. I have so many series that I’m going to follow, but I’ll have to consider dropping all the non-appealing series without giving them chances because watching anime is really time-consuming -_-;

Definitely looking forward to Disgaia, Utawarerumono, School Rumble, and Soul Link though.

  7. A series not on your list that I’m looking forward to is Air Gear. I read the manga and I love the concept of roller blades with semi-flying capabilities. Plus it’s just plain ecchi.

    KiraTakuto
  8. Eri is my goddess!

I’m looking forward to Air Gear too, just hope they give Mikan lots of screen time.
And Revy too for Black Lagoon.

KiraTakuto, I like your taste in anime.

  9. There’s just so much this spring that I don’t even know where to begin… If I were to cut it all down to series that I must watch, it probably would be School Rumble, Tsubasa Chronicle, XXXHOLiC, Joshi Kousei, AMG, and Zegapain. There’s just so much to pick and choose from that I really can’t go on story premise alone this season. o.O

  10. There are several titles I’m looking forward to: xxxHOLiC, Disgaea, Soul Link, and the new seasons of School Rumble and Tsubasa Chronicle. The Third ~Aoi Hitomi no Shoujo~ looks interesting; it’s rare to see an action anime with a heroine protaganist. I’m also surprised at how many shoujo-ai series are coming out at once. Looks like it’s shaping up to be a pretty good season.

  11. I tae it that Demonbane isn’t on the list of anime you’ll watch for Spring 2006 only because it’s airing in March, right? /RIGHT/???!!! XD

If you ignore that series…well, then /BLASHPHEMY/!!!! 😀

    Shinji103
  12. My series will be Tsubasa, School Rumble, Soul Link and Makai Senki Disgaea. MAybe also xxxHolic, but I’m not sure here, because I didn’t like the animation in the movie. So this 4/5 series^^
That’s also my max. since I already have 250GB of anime..

    *Chi*
  13. The start of the new season would definitely trouble my time management. There are way too many titles in the upcoming season, I’ll have my hands full with just the series that I just “have” to follow because of reasons such as: sequel to a previous series I watched or animation of a manga series I read etc. XD Then add in the titles I want to check out because it caught my interest, I don’t really see myself leaving the house all that often! hah 😛

  14. Thank you for introducing so many new animes. There appears to be to me so many good ones. I’m going to watch 14 of them. I wonder how many of them I will keep watching to the last episode. But you amaze me, Random Curiosity. Where can you find time to watch so many animes? I know you are enjoying playing Final Fantasy XII, blogging so many amines. I wonder how many hours a day you can sleep. Anyway you are amazing. Please take care and blog as many new animes as possible. I’m really looking forward to them. Ganbatte.

  15. I am most looking forward to series including Nana, xxxHolic, Ouran High School Host Club and the new season of Tsubasa Chronicle. The new season crop of animes look really interesting and I may widen my selection once some of them start rolling on the screen. I am really spoilt for choices, hehe!

    shojo
  16. Hrm, I’m interested in Tsubasa, xxxHOLiC, School Rumble, Soul Link, Himawari, The Third, and perhaps Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu (Simply because the novel was illustrated by the same person who illustrated the Shakugan no Shana novels).
But really, theres too many to pick this season…

    Kaito
  17. Right. To watch 13 series.. I want to watch less, but enjoy them more.
It’s also difficult to discuss in forums about 13 animes at the same time^^
But you can of course watch first 13 series and then focuss on the ones you really like.

    *Chi*
  18. To address some of the series that have been mentioned so far:
Utawarerumono – There are too many Monday shows I want to watch more than this one, so it got cut early on from the list.
.hack//ROOTS – I haven’t really enjoyed a .hack series ever, so I’m not too gung-ho to try the new one.
Demonbane – It’s a bit further away, and unlike Kamisama Kazoku (go figure), it didn’t catch my eye.
Air Gear – Yes, I do read the manga, but no I’m not planning on watching this series. It’s partly because I don’t like Oh Great! series in their animated forms (TenTen comes to mind) and partly because Tuesday lineups are already pretty strong.
Black Lagoon – Meh, just didn’t feel like watching this.
AMG and ARIA – I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again: I didn’t watch Season 1, I don’t plan on watching Season 2

And as for the 13+ series comment, that’s perfectly possible. I certainly do AND I blog that many.

  19. For the record, I currently follow (count with me now):
Angel Heart, Bleach, Jigoku Shoujo, Magikano, Shakugan no Shana, Kashimashi, Mai-Otome, REC, Shinigami no Ballad, FSN, Blood+, Kage Kara Mamoru, and Canvas2.
    There, 13 😛

  20. Lots of comedy this spring which is always a plus in my book. Can’t say I blame you about air gear TenTen was atrocious. I have high hopes for disgaea, joushi kosei, and ouran so I can only hope they deliver.

    hiken
  21. Definitely more than 13 if current animes + the new shows.

I’m having doubts with some of the “shoujos-only” shows Omni listed. So they are generally for girls to watch or actually generally guys?

    sinistral
  22. OMGG so much animes! Gosh and kh2 coming next week O.o I’ll be so busy man LOL. Oh well…hmmm…my series will be…Naruto The Next Generation (in 2 weeks), Tsubasa, Soul Link, maybe Kiba, xxxHolic, Disgaea, School Rumble.

But about School Rumble….I downloaded last time…and it have no subtitles in tokyotosho. Can u tell me where to download it ? I’m looking for it.

    AznSoulBoy
  23. People stopping subbing School Rumble because the JP company actually complained (which doesn’t seem to happen often), so even without it being licensed in the US, a lot of the sites stopped carrying it.

    kiryuu
  24. Not to worry Omni, since the post was on Spring season anime.. so worth mentioning. But I do know you wont cover AMG season 2, as you have previously mentioned. 🙂

    fisherman horizon
  25. I’ll definitely watch NANA and Ouran High since I’m currently following the manga now, both mangas are still continuing with NANA reaching Vol.14 and Vol.7 for Ouran.

I don’t know how they are going to end NANA though, I think the manga is still very far from reaching the end, maybe they’ll end it half way through the manga? 🙂

    Serene
  26. I am Definitly going to watch a lot of those I was pretty dissapointed by the last two Anime seasons and hope that this one(I will surely be watching Digimon Savers,Disgea, School Rumble, Himawari, The Third ~Aoi Hitomi no Shoujo~, The Third ~Aoi Hitomi no Shoujo~, Joshi Kousei Girl’s High) will be a lot better
