Summary:
When Kyon first meet Suzumiya Haruhi, it’s during introductions on the first day of high school. Haruhi proclaims to the class that she had no interest in normal people and cared only about aliens, time travelers, people from a different world, and people with supernatural powers. Kyon tries to talk to her, but she has no interest in him because he’s not one of the types she mentioned. His friend, who went to the same middle school, tells Kyon about all of the things she did in middle school, including an incident with graffiti, an incident when Haruhi put all the classroom desks out into the hallway, and an incident where she painted the school’s roof. Haruhi also had no interest in the guys, saying that she had no time for normal people. As his friend is talking, Kyon starts to notice Haruhi more and more. He outlines three particularly eccentric behaviors. First, she changed hairstyles every day. Second, she started changing her clothes in the classroom while there were still guys around; she holds the male students at the same level as potatoes. Third, she temporarily joined all the extracurricular clubs in school, but ended up in none of them.
One day, Kyon asks Haruhi if she had been changing her hair daily as a counter-measure against aliens. She asks when he noticed, and a conversation actually starts between the two. At one point she starts staring at him and asks if they’ve met before. The next day, Kyon finds that Haruhi has cut her hair short. The two start talking more and more during homeroom, and when the class switches seats, Kyon ends up in front of Haruhi again. The topic of clubs gets raised, but Haruhi has no interest in any of them. Kyon then unwittingly inspires Haruhi to start her own club. She later tells him that she wants him to help file the official paperwork while she goes and secures a clubroom and members. She ends up taking over the art and literature club’s room and recruiting their first member, a quiet girl named Nagato Yuki. The day after that, Haruhi brings a girl named Asahina Mikuru, who seems very reluctant to be there. Kyon comes to realize that Haruhi brought Mikuru only because she was cute and had big breasts. Haruhi has Mikuru quit the calligraphy club, which Mikuru agrees to do only after noticing Yuki sitting and reading. The new club is named the S.O.S., which stands for 世界を大いに盛り上げるための涼宮ハルヒの団 (Sekai wo Oini moriagerutame no Suzumiya haruhi no dan – the Haruhi Suzumiya group to bring much excitement to the world). Kyon is already resigned to the fact that Haruhi will do whatever she likes.

This episode is mainly about how Haruhi and Kyon’s relationship developed and how the club got started. Haruhi’s eccentric, but really opens up (kind of) once she warms up to Kyon. He, on the other hand, finds her oddly intriguing, but once he gets to know her he really can’t stop her. They make for an amusing couple, without the romantic implications.
So this second episode is hilarious, especially Haruhi explaining moe (even the SHUFFLE! in Comptiq magazine that she holds up lol). I really like how the pacing of this episode, combined with the music, made things funny (a prime example being the changing hairstyles scene). I wasn’t sure about this show before, but I am now – this one’s a keeper. Amazing quality animation, hilarious plot and characters…what more could you ask for?

  1. Dang, I wish there was a post edit function… ^^b

Does anybody else get a feeling of similarity to another particular series? I’m thinking Shakugan no Shana. 😀 No, not from plot and stuff. The Melansholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is based off a seinen novel (just like Shakugan no Shana) that is serialized in the magazine Shounen Ace. Looking at the character designs on the covers of the novels here (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=26413), they look /very/ similar to the Shakugan no Shana’s novel character designs here (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=26413)

It’ll solidify this series’ potential to know it was made by the brilliant Noiji Ito who made Shakugan no Shana. 😀 😀 😀

  2. *really hopes for an edit post function* lol ^^b

Found out a few seconds ago that SnS and Haruhi simply have the same illustrator. :\

Oh well, this series is more than awesome enough anyway. 😀

  3. Ah yes, Art resembled Air because they’re both ANIMATED by Kyoto Animation.
The novel illustrations are similar because they’re both DRAWN by Noiji Itou, an artist who seems to be gaining momentum in the ero-game world…

  4. “Why did Haruhi strip in class? >_>;;”

According to the main character, she thinks of men as potatoes.

Lol, Itou Noiji’s character designs are always so loveable XD

  5. So far, the only relation this anime series has in connection with Shuffle! is that three of their voice actors are in THIS anime series as well. We have Sugita Tomokazu (Rin) who is playing Kyon. There’s Sayaka Aoki (Shia) who is playing Kyon’s sister. And finally, Yuko Goto (Kaede) playing Mikura. Anyone else would like to add to that, feel free.

  6. If Haruhism spawns a cult of SOS brigades I think the world would be all the better for it. The explaination of why poor Mikuru got drafted was hilarious. Kyon x Haruhi, interesting couple I wonder how much mayhem they’ll cause and how much Kyon is going to clean up.

  7. i love the voice acting for this series and the animation’s great, plus the whole story thing seems to be pretty crazy which is good because you get tired of the same old plots 🙂

  8. the result kyon was draft?
    hmmm….

    read the novel…

actually, haruchi gave a clue in epidsode 2 when she mentioned tt “have i seen u b4 somewhere?”

as a matter of fact.. she did. just tt kyon was not aware of the situation…

watch on.. ya know the result soon enough~

  9. WHAT? No one has noticed how effing great the ending sequence was animated? By far and away the best ED sequence I have seen in recent memory.

Haruhi and co dancing? That’s like half the show for me. XD

  10. “OK…I’m gonna get flame by the lolicon but damn the girls look so young compared to the male characters! It’s hard to believe…”

No flames.. but you should stand near more japanese (or asian) women. Hell my wife and her cousins (japanese ancestry) are in their 40s and everyone of them still get carded at bars. Every exchange student we or our friends host look like jailbait and they’re in their 20s.
Anyone married or going with them gets “those stares” (cradle robbers). Not that I’m complaining… but I have to “de-gray” my hair to reduce the mob impulse to tar and feather me.

Suzumiya is entrancing… her *existence* makes the world more interesting 🙂
Hope they’re able to maintain the level of wittiness and energy.

  11. Ah, I definitely watch this one. I wasn’t sure after episode 1 (or 0), but now I’m totally sure.
I love Haruhis eyes but Mikurus voice annoys me; I hope she never ever again talks as much as she did in the previous episode.
