Summary:
Many years ago, Diva first made Karl into a Chevalier under the watch of Solomon and Amshel. In the present, David and Lewis see online that Diva’s concerts have all been cancelled except for the final one. Today is actually Javier’s birthday, meaning that Lewis and David are baking a cake, and Kai and Monique are out shopping for groceries. Kai doesn’t seem to be paying attention to what Monique is saying, making her wonder if he’s thinking about Saya. He suddenly notices something in the distance and runs off. That something turns out to be Saya herself, looking the concert posters which are now all marked cancelled. Kai is worried about Saya, but she’s fine after having healed. Saya starts to walk away, but Monique runs up and invites Saya to Javier’s birthday party. Much to her delight, Saya agrees to come.
At a US military airstrip, Van is finishing the preparations for the move. However, his assistant alerts him to an abnormality in Zone Z’s luggage compartment. It’s Karl, and he’s opened the container housing the Corpse Corp soldiers. This news is reported to Amshel and Solomon. Those two know that Karl will be going after Saya. Solomon comments that Karl views Saya not only as an enemy, but also as something to live for. Amshel surmises that because of that, Karl can’t kill Saya. Solomon then wonders if Karl should be rescued, but Amshel doesn’t think so. Back at Gray’s house, Javier’s birthday party is in full swing with lots of familiar guests including even Mao and Okamura. When the dog starts barking, Monique notices that the other guest she invited has arrived. Saya comes in bearing a large gift – a teddy bear – for Javier. She turns to leave right after Javier thanks her for it, but Gray stops her, suggesting that she celebrate the birthday with them. Since Monique pulls out a chair for her and Mao also speaks up, Saya ends up staying.
But as the party continues, Kai finds Saya standing alone in the kitchen. He recounts memories from Okinawa of their father screwing up at making a cake for Saya’s birthday. Saya remembers that George had made a feast instead. She feels that that those days were like a dreamlike time, but that’s over now. Kai admits that he’s been thinking a lot about why they fight, thinking about Javier and Nahavi’s laughing faces, and wonders if they can return to that. But Saya responds only by saying that she’s a Chiropteran. Suddenly, she hears Karl call out her name. She grabs her sword and runs outside to meet the Phantom, who immediately goes off on a speech about how Saya is like his beautiful goddess, equal to Diva, whose existence brings chaos and destruction to the world. He snaps his fingers and a group of five Corpse Corps soldiers appear. Karl’s plan is to use them to keep everyone else out of the way while only he and Saya dance.
Hagi holds off two of the Corpse Corps, while Lulu, Moses, and Karman appear to fight the others. Kai also uses his special Igniter bullets to riddle one with holes and blow him up. One of the Corpse Corps charges right at Kai, but David stops him with a bullet to the head. A second comes out of nowhere, but Lulu is just as quick to tackle him. Kai returns the favor immediately by shooting the soldier right behind her. And when Karman gets double-teamed, it’s Hagi and his cello case that steps in to help. Meanwhile, Saya has been knocked into the nearby shed by Karl. His voice floats around her, saying how happy he is that it’s just the two of them, with no one interfering, so that she can think only about him – only about killing him. Karl appears behind her, happy that his beloved Saya is in front of his eyes.
Racing towards the farm in his car is Solomon. Earlier, Amshel had asked him if he had remembered the time when Karl became a Chevalier. Solomon recalled that it had not been Karl’s wish to be one. Amshel says that according to Gregory’s theory, Diva’s blood changes everything. The Delta plan was started once Karl was chosen: the seed was sown in Russia, it budded in Germany, and it bore fruit in Vietnam. Amshel had wanted Karl’s body as only experimental material, but Karl had wanted Diva’s love, something that he wasn’t going to get. Remembering Amshel’s words, Solomon speeds up the car. At that time, Karl is pinning Saya down with a barrage of spikes from his arm. Several of them cut her and one even pierces through her leg.
Karl points out his ugly arm to Saya, saying that he accepted it as an offer from Amshel so that he could defeat Saya. He has used to question what a Chevalier was; receiving Diva’s love was his only hope, but Diva had left him. He finally realized that the only person who could understand him was Saya, the enemy. During all this, Saya has pulled the spike from her leg and her blood has dripped down from above onto Karl’s face. Karl suddenly gets riddled with Igniter bullets from Kai. Now in his Chiropteran form, Karl knocks Kai aside and runs out. Saya first makes sure Kai is alright and then goes outside to continue her fight.
Karl suggests that they die together as both Saya and he have been betrayed by their families. The two charge each other, but then Karl grabs Saya from behind. His goal is to kill her by tearing her neck and drinking her blood, which would also kill him. After Karl succeeds in biting down on her neck, Saya hears Kai calling out to her. She slowly realizes that she can’t die here because she has people to defend. In a flash, something cuts off Karl’s left arm, freeing Saya enough so that she can turn her sword and stab herself straight through the stomach. Because he is standing right behind her, her bloodied sword also pierces through Karl. As he crystallizes and dies, Karl turns around and sees that the one who cut off his arm was Solomon.
As Saya struggles with the sword still in her body, Solomon kneels down in front of her. He tells her that if she forcefully tries to take it out, she’ll damage her internal organs. Instead, Solomon does the job of pulling the sword out himself. As Hagi and the others come to Saya’s side, Solomon orders the Corpse Corp back to their beds. When Saya asks him why he helped, Solomon replies that he was envious of Karl – true to himself, living his own life according to his desire. However, Solomon thinks that that was a misunderstanding because Karl was actually just lonely and had figured out that Saya had the same feelings. But Saya and Karl are different because Saya has friends all around her. And yet nonetheless, Saya chose solitude for herself for the sake of her friends. In his own solitude, Karl hadn’t noticed that even after seeing her.
Much to everyone’s surprise, Solomon also reveals that Diva is going to Christina Island in one week. Saya asks him why he’s telling them that, and Solomon replies that he may also be lonely. Then, in a gust of wind, Solomon disappears. A healed Saya gets back up and takes back her sword. Kai wants to know if she’s going, and of course she is in order to defeat Diva. He reminds her that she’s not fighting alone, that this is also their fight. What’s more, he wants to protect her. Saya gasps after hearing this. She starts to say something then stops herself. In the end, all she can do is call Kai an idiot.

Preview:

As expected, Karl finally made his move on Saya. They did a pretty good job making him a little crazy and deluded, with all his talk of wanting to die together with Saya. I can’t help but think that with him wanting Diva’s love and then going after Saya, all Karl needed was a strong mother figure in his life lol. But it’s not entirely his fault, as both he and Amshel knew that he was an experiment all along. If nothing else, it serves to remind us once again that it’s Amshel who holds all the cards.
The effect of the Shifu this episode feels a bit, well, cheap. I had expected them to appear again in a moment of dire need, but it felt more like they just showed up and helped out a little against the Corpse Corps. Heck, I’d say that Kai contributed more to the battle than they did, which is both a testament to their small role and Kai’s growing ability. It’s also Kai who reminded Saya that she’s still got people to protect, and it’s Kai who Saya can’t refuse in terms of going with her to the island. This just further reinforces my belief that it’ll be Kai who changes Saya’s solitary attitude.
Next week, the two sides head for a showdown on Christina Island. It should also be the introduction of the fourth OP and ED. 🙂 I’m going to miss hearing 「This Love」…

  1. Karl! NOOOOO! Poor, poor crazy Karl. I hope some time Solomon doesn’t go out in such a sad way.
Yes, we do learn a little about Karl’s past this ep. He fell for Diva hard but she didn’t care for him. So he thought that only Saya could understand him.

  2. hmm maybe karl was just feeling… lonely, out of place? since alot of the plans for diva his brothers are involved in are to do with business and he wasn’t erm, included? perhaps saya was his only drive to help diva in a way, so he tries his best to defeat her and gain recognition? i do pity him…

  3. Enough with the “slut” comment. You anime fans are so used to think of women as virginal and pure that when one female is in a seductive pose, you scream slut? tsk tsk tsk

I don’t know why but I feel disconnected of all those characters…And Karl “loving” Saya because he felt rejected by Diva? Come on!

  4. That was fast! Poor, deluded Karl; he was obsessed with Saya like some crazy stalker after Diva used and tossed him aside like a toy. They could have elaborated a little bit more on where he came from and how he met Anshel and Solomon with flashbacks, though. It’s time like this that I wished I could understand Japanese (but watching the show live when it broadcasts locally is pretty cool). Diva looks really seductive in that shot. And now she’s masquerading as a little boy… what is she thinking? o_O;

I was wondering why Karl didn’t crystallize and die after biting Saya on the neck and presumably draining some of her blood? Isn’t Saya’s blood poison to Diva and her minions? Or does it have to be blood mixed with blood? But I do remember that Irene died drinking Saya’s blood, though (her death was sad ;_;). Confusing. Maybe Karl smoked, but didn’t inhale, eh? Heh.

Solomon does come to Saya’s rescue, and so do the Sif (yay!). I have to say, this ep started off slow (seeing David in an apron mixing cake batter made me laugh) but the action toward the end kicked butt. Very nice animation and blood all around. Kai was getting some good shots in too. I have to admit envying Karl a little; who wouldn’t want to give Saya a hickey? Good way to go, I think. 🙂

On a side note, is anyone else a little confused about Mao and Kai’s relationship now? Mao seems to hang out with Okamura more and more (regular odd couple there, and they banter like they’re married, lol) and no real reactions toward Monique (she likes Kai too, eh?) or even Saya (though the idea of KaixSaya is just, um, weird, even if Monique keeps thinking Kai likes Saya in that way). Are Mao and Kai even together anymore, or have events changed them both so much that they’re just friends?

    Keep up the good work!

  5. Okay, Eurys

your blowing things out of proportion.I said she LOOKS like a slut I didn’t say she was.But for good measure I’ll correct myself, Diva isn’t a slut…….she’s a spoiled, self-absorbed, little Bitch…………Happy now?

  6. neways…in the “slut” looking pic of Diva..isnt she supposed to look like Riku???
That was way in the past, when she first made Karl into a Chevalier. That’s why she still looks like she used to.

  7. @Ryuma: Karl wanted Saya and him to die together, that’s why he bit her. Even if Saya wouldn’t commit harakiri, Karl would have died eventually, but probably a little slower.

  8. what did karl told saya he wanted to go with her ? i did not undertood this part .

Solomon is really a snob . he reminds me of Tamaki . how ? well..they guy is a chiroptera , but he bother to take his car to go to saya’s place . c’mon..the dude can move 3 times faster then his car . i bet he can even fly . but no….he has to take his damn car .

  9. Omni, glad to know you’re better and blogging. Do take it easy. ^^

Diva was actually sleeping in the first screenshot. Amshel woke her up.

Poor Karl. He cheated death twice but not a third time. He was just so obsessed with Saya that it turned destructive. I feel sorry for him and for Solomon because out of all the Chevaliers, he and Karl seem to be the closest. Great teamwork from everyone in this episode. I love the dynamics between all of them when they fought.

Kurotsuki: Solomon is Not a snob. Didn’t you watch his expression when he held a piece of Karl? He took a car to the Zoo the last time and no one said anything. Maybe he prefers to drive than speed-run, you know?

    koyuki-san
  10. meh….who said snob can’t feel pain ? 😛

ok…i’ll admit i have grudge against solomon for choping off Karl’s arm thus surprising him and making him easly stabable by Saya .
don’t misundertand me , i did not wished for Saya to die or whatever , hell no , i love Saya ! but..Karl was just my favorite chevalier…and i dint like his death.. he was badly betrayed..and his last word were ” kisama” when adressing to his brother…what a horrible way to die 🙁

    kurotsuki
  11. That was harsh of Solomon to attack his own brother in surprise rather than save him.
Solomon could have just pulled Karl away and still protect Saya.
What kind of jerk allows his brother to die?

  12. Well, this episode was pretty good. I was happy that Kai finally let Saya know that he still cares for her in words. Saya was going to try to dismiss his feelings , but she was actually happy that he stills cares for her even is she is a Chiropteran, and only could come with the typical “BAKA” that girls use when a guy say or do something that they are happy about but don’t want to admit. 🙂

  13. wow… great episode! i feel a little sorry for karl. in the first place he did not wish to be a chevalier and just wanted to be loved by diva… poor guy.

omni, dont overdo it dude… take care! ^^

  14. i think Solomon in the 1st place had like Saya and slowly turning it’s back to his fellow Chevalier’s and Diva. but i think it’s still early to speculate. i hope Solomon will help Saya’s group in the battle against Diva.

    Kai
  15. Nice episode… Thanks again for blogging…

Not much of Hagi in this one. I do hope that Solomon goes to Saya’s sad. I think he cares too much for Saya to be Diva’s chivalier.

  16. I don’t think kai will become a chevalier unless he is dying and saya wishes to save his life and kai himself does not express any interest in immortality or power he will be with saya as a family as a brother for however long he has as a human being. as for karl that was sad all he wanted was diva love but he was nothing but a toy to her and a guinea pig to amshel then again it seems amshel is holding the cards being the puppet master cause diva is just a child looking for amusement or perhaps that is a guise for her real nature perhaps she is more cunning than she lest on.

It seems with diavas blood amshel wishes the destiny of mankind perhaps he will make them all into chiropterans in a sense becoming god

  17. Sheska, fine, I just don’t like people using this word so easily, that’s all, especially since Diva has just woke up, and I don’t see what’s slutty here.
It’s also fascinating that because a woman is a villain, it seems more easy for some people to throw bad words…
Diva is mostly stupid to not send all her chevaliers at the same time to kill Saya. Instead, we have the generic “I’ll send someone weaker, oh, I’m bored, let’s go”.

    eurys
  18. Its not pure in the least kurotsuki it actually crazy he thinks he can control the destiny of an entrie species and that earth is one big experimental playground. as for if all become chiropterans what will we feed he could easily create artificial humans like he created the shiffu as blood sacks or make an artificial suplement of blood who knows. or animal blood as an alternative

  19. well that was fast. the replacement for Karl that is, he even looks a bit the same (with the hair style and all…).

i have to comment that saya as the episodes go by she seems more and more… less coll.if you think s=about it she’s seems way weaker than the previous episoeds (e.g the one when kai first see’s her after a year.) and her hair is not as gud sumhow…

and to Vamnpire Warrior; don’t you thik its weird that saya and diva need food even thou thier servents don’t? maybe the sevents need it too, or it helps thier body a bi at least.

anyway me n’ my sis are going to an anime festival in a month were going to cosplay a bit (not fully on!!!) i’ll probably wear a “daddyhat” and she’ll wear some “neko mini’s”. i hope you know wat they are!

but if there is enough time in the exam period sis might go as Ranma (girl version) as 4 me i don’t know.

  21. Don’t you know the bit at the start was a flashback – they do loads of character past stuff when a relatively unknown main character dies in anime. You know Karl’s gonna die as soon as they do major flashbacks

  22. I wish the episodes would come out sooner but I am sad that Blood+ will end in about 12 episdoes, =(
I wish Solomon could be with Saya if Hagi leaves like he always thought he would.

  24. Um, ew and wow but not too surprised at the same time. There are some intense spoilers out there as the series draws to an end. It would be safe to say I feel as if I’ve been sacked by a load of bricks. I better watch myself, lol. This also corroborates some of the goings on in the manga anyway….

  25. I luved Karl. And… I really hope Kai /isn’t/ the one who she ends up with. I’m not too fond of him. I hope Saya ends up with Solomon or Hagi. Leaning towards her intended fiancee, but I wouldn’t be too upset with blondie. I just wanna see Hagi happy! x__x
