Summary:
As Kyon is being dragged out of bed by his little sister, he’s thinking about why he is involved with Haruhi when everyone else around her is an alien, a time traveler, or an ESPer. At school, he asks Taniguchi if he’s a normal male high school student. Taniguchi doesn’t think Kyon’s normal, citing the incident where he caught Kyon with Yuki in his arms. Kyon tries to make up a story that involved Yuki collapsing because of anemia, but Taniguchi doesn’t believe him. During class, Haruhi is dressed up in her gym clothes because it’s hot and because she has cleaning duty today, so those clothes will be easier to move in. A really bored Haruhi starts wondering what the next costume for Mikuru should be, suggesting maybe cat ears, nurse clothes, or a queen outfit.
During club hours, Kyon has control of the computer and turns on the option to reveal all hidden folders. He checks the one labeled “mikuru” and specifically looks for the birthmark in the photos. It is indeed there on her left breast. Mikuru comes by to serve him tea and catches sight of that folder with her name on it. As she’s trying to get him to open it, Haruhi walks in and sees the two of them really close together. An angry Haruhi kicks him out of the room so that she can change out of her gym clothes. Haruhi ends up putting on her bunny outfit and then works on Mikuru’s hair for the rest of the afternoon. While playing Othello with Itsuki, Kyon thinks about how everything is normal and they’re going about their monotonous life. Kyon feels that it’d be good if these peaceful times continue, but he knows that Haruhi doesn’t feel that way.
That night, Kyon goes to bed, but soon gets awakened. He opens his eyes and sees Haruhi’s face. They are both dressed in their school uniforms and are at school. Both of them have woken up in this gray world, which Kyon realizes is a closed space. On Kyon’s suggestion, the two try to leave the school, but come to the edge of the closed space and can’t go any further. Inside the school, they try the telephone out, but that doesn’t work. Surveying the landscape, they see the entire gray world around them, a sight which gives Haruhi a bad feeling. The two make their way to the club room where Kyon brews some tea while Haruhi continues to stare out the window and try to figure things out. She decides to explore around the school and instructs Kyon to stay in the club room.
After Haruhi leaves, Kyon sees a red sphere floating outside the window. The sphere changes into a silhouette of Itsuki and carries Itsuki’s voice. Itsuki explains that these are abnormal circumstances: if this were a normal closed space, he would be able to enter, but because it’s not, he can only appear in this incomplete form. He says that Haruhi became disgusted with the old world, so she decided to create a new one. No one knows what happens to a world when it loses its god – it could continue on as it is or it could become nothing in an instant. Itsuki notes that Kyon and Haruhi have disappeared from the old world and are now in the new one. This new world is closer to what Haruhi actually wishes for than the old one was.
When Kyon asks why he’s here, Itsuki is surprised that Kyon hasn’t figured out that he’s the one chosen by Haruhi, the only one Haruhi wants to share the new world with. He jokes that the two of them are like Adam and Eve because they can bear children and increase the population. Anyway, Itsuki says that this will become a world Kyon is familiar with, but it will still be different. As for returning to the original world, Itsuki suggests that it’s possible if Haruhi wishes it. With his form fading fast, Itsuki gives Kyon two messages: one from Mikuru apologizing to him because she feels at fault and one from Yuki telling him to turn on the computer. Having said that, Itsuki disappears.
Kyon turns on the computer, but gets only a black screen with a cursor. Suddenly, Yuki starts communicating with him through the screen. She tells him that the Integration Thought Entity is disappointed because the possibility of evolution has been lost. Haruhi has the power to create data, a power which the Integration Thought Entity does not have. If this ability of hers were analyzed, they thought it would be possible to find out how to auto-evolve. As Yuki is typing this, Haruhi is exploring a classroom and sees a bright light outside. Yuki continues on by saying that she’s betting on Kyon. They want Haruhi to return to their world because she’s an important observation subject, and Yuki personally wants Kyon to come back; she wants to go to the library again. The final words Yuki types Kyon are “sleeping beauty.”
As Kyon is thinking about what Itsuki and Yuki said, he hears an explosion and a bright light starts coming through the window. There is a shinjin right outside. Haruhi bursts into the room excited about the shinjin, but Kyon grabs her and runs outside as it starts destroying the school. Haruhi remains excited and happy about the strange things around her, and doesn’t seem to care about returning to their original world. She doesn’t even care about the SOS Brigade – she’s now having these interesting personal experiences, so there’s no need for her to search for mysterious things anymore. Kyon tells her that he wants to go back to their original world, and explains that he liked the way he was living with all of this friends around him.
Haruhi says that he’ll be able to meet them again because she knows that the darkness won’t be here forever and that the sun will rise tomorrow. Kyon continues to insist on the old world, so Haruhi lets go of his hand. She asks him if he’s not fed up with the boring world and if he doesn’t want something more interesting to happen. Kyon responds that he used to think that, but he’s been through some interesting things in the past several days. He tells her that although she doesn’t know it, the world revolves around her and it’s moving towards an interesting direction. As the two are being approached by a shinjin, Kyon starts thinking about what Haruhi is to him and realizes that he doesn’t think of her like Itsuki, Yuki, or Mikuru do.
Remembering how future-Mikuru had mentioned Snow White and how Yuki had typed him “sleeping beauty,” Kyon figures out what those two had in common. With his hands on Haruhi’s shoulders, he tells her that he thinks ponytails are moe and that it would suit her best. He then leans in and kisses her just as the shinjin gets to them. The entire world seems to get sucked away and when Kyon opens his eyes again, he’s fallen onto the floor of his room. Unable to sleep, he wonders if it was a dream and how real it all felt. He’s not sure if this is the original world or a new one, and doesn’t know if he has a way of ascertaining this. At school, Kyon is surprised to see that Haruhi is sporting a ponytail hairstyle. She tells him that she had a nightmare last night and couldn’t sleep. Looking at the ponytail, Kyon tells Haruhi that it really suits her.
In the aftermath of everything, Itsuki thanks Kyon for what he did. He suggests that it’s possible this is a world created last night, but in any case, he feels privileged to be able to meet Kyon and Haruhi again. In the club room, Yuki reports that Kyon and Haruhi disappeared at 2:30AM the previous night. Kyon asks her about others like her and if they’ll attack him like Ryoko did. Yuki tells him that it’s ok because she won’t let allow them. Mikuru enters the room and tearfully hugs Kyon since he’s ok. She quickly pulls herself away though, because the same thing would happen again if Haruhi sees them together. Kyon doesn’t understand that, but does mention to her about the star-shaped mark on her chest. She checks and discovers that she does indeed have such a birthmark, and starts hitting him trying to figure out when he found out. Haruhi catches them, but she has a smile on her face because she’s got another costume for Mikuru – a nurse outfit.
Kyon explains that he later turned in the club application for the SOS Brigade. But because they wouldn’t approve of “Suzumiya Haruhi Brigade to Make the World More Exciting,” Kyon changed the full name to “Assisting the Student Council in Changing the World Association.” As for today, the club is meeting once again for a search for mysterious things. However, it’s only Kyon and Haruhi this time because the other three couldn’t come. He arrived early since it’s only the two of them and they have the rule that whoever is last gets fined. Kyon has got various things to talk to her about, such as their activity plans, Mikuru’s cosplay clothes, etc. But first, he knows that he’ll talk to her about aliens, time travelers, and ESPers.

Well there was no OP for this final episode, they just went straight into it. The ending credits came on as they showed the epilogue, with Bouken desho desho? playing in the background.
So pretty much everything Itsuki explained to Kyon in last week’s episode comes into play here. The biggest surprise this episode was the kiss, though I’m sure most people reading this already spoiled themselves through the novels so it probably wasn’t that big of a surprise. I wish they had given a closer-up shot of it, but then again, the overall scene wasn’t all that romantic. It did have some great choral music, which I’m told is Gustav Mahler’s 8th Symphony.
Overall, this was a good ending, though I’d hesitate to say great. It doesn’t leave me with quite the same omg-wtf-this-was-such-a-good-ending-nothing-can-compare feeling that I get at the end of some series (FSN and Mai-Otome for example). That may be partially because they jump around so much in the timeline, so I know that this really isn’t an ending. Along that vein, I was also kind of hoping for some grand revelation on why they skipped around so much, but I didn’t see any. In any case, I’m hoping for a sequel. There’s plenty of things they haven’t explained (like the talking cat as many of you have mentioned), and there is plenty of material left from the novels that they can still cover. I’d love to see how Kyoto Animation handles it.

Final Thoughts:
A little over three months ago, I admit that I hadn’t really even heard of Suzumiya Haruhi. That’s mainly because of the lack of promotional information and the lack of a good website, so I didn’t even cover this show in my spring shows preview. Boy was that all a mistake. One of my first thoughts after watching the first/zeroth episode was “this is genius.” Practically overnight, the Haruhi phenomenon exploded, and suddenly Suzumiya Haruhi stuff was everywhere in the anime community, especially related to the ending song and that dance. 14 episodes and a lot of aliens, time travelers, and ESPers later, it’s hard to find a person who wasn’t greatly impressed by this series. I once again have to applaud Kyoto Animation for the fabulous work they did here. I don’t think any other studio could have pulled it off quite like they did. The voice actresses also did a fantastic job, so a round of applause for Hirano Aya, Chihara Minori, Goto Yuuko too. Hirano Aya in particular showed us how incredible a voice she has with her songs in episode 12. Like I said earlier, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a sequel 🙂

  1. Man, somehow I was kinda hoping Kyon and Haruhi would at least kiss, if at least to calm Haruhi’s emotional state and prevent the destruction. But judging from the bottom row pictures, it looks to me like they’re on a date, and that would tell me they’ve become a couple. If that’s the case it would be a nice finish to the series.

  2. I wanted a close up of the kiss, and at least one more hoorah for Fang-tan, but alas…

Mikuru and Haruhi both had more moe modes than I can shake a stick at. I dearly hope that this is not the end but merely the beginning. Kanon be damned second season now!

  3. Im fairly certain they will make a sequel, considering the fact that if they didnt alot of people would complain, and the fact that there is still alot more story from the novels they can tell.

  4. Can someone help me out here…
Because Ep1 was not part of the normal continuity it’s actually episode 0, right?
Given that this is a 14 episode series, and that episode 14 was actually episode 9, does this mean that there’s a gap somewhere?

I’ve got all the eps except this one, and no episode claims to be episode 11, so what happened to it?

  6. Yay…….pretty much ended how i expected, even though i have no idea what was said (HAD to dl the raw just so i could see it 😉 )

as for Kyon and Mikuru……..i reserve my comments as either they are intentionally trying to fool us with the gestures and mannerisms or Kyon is gonna get in some serious trouble if he ever gets with her.

I eagerly await a 2nd series, as much of the novel i have seen so far looks very good and would like to see what KyoAni do with it.

  7. I expected that kind of scene to happen but…

There are certain scenes in some of the earlier episodes that suggest (those after episode 6 in the chronological timeline – Boredom, Mysterique, Lone Island, Live, Day of, and particularly Somedays) that Haruhi has a liking for the normal human Kyon – how she stops after he tells her, and the smiles and the sort of embarassed Haruhi scenes.

Q: did she know that it was real?

  8. i wanted more episode of this probably they’ll make ova’s. for some reason after watching the whole series i wanted more nagato and mikuru episodes than haruhi episodes.

  10. Its so sad that such a great anime has ended. This is one of the best anime Ive ever seen and Ive never shown so much anticipation to the release of the next episode. Heres hoping for a sequel and more Haruhi madness!

  11. In the novel he says to her afterwards “I liked you with a ponytail” (or what that was) – so she might have suspicions.

“Best Last ep since canvas 2” – Seconded

…now, lets all hope (ask Haruhikami for ;-))) for another season or 3 – enough material is in the novels

  12. HAruhi think all was a dream, only Kyon and the rest of the brigade know it actually happened.
In the next episodes they are not a couple, but they might as well be the way Haruhi always act toward Kyon. I was not surprised by the end because I had already read the novel.

  13. OMG THIS NEEDS A SECOND SEASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn’t like the music with them in the closed space. It was loud and disturbing the romance. 🙁

Otherwise, a perfect ending. I’m expecting them to open the second season with the conversation at the cafe when they were meeting at the end. Pretty funny! ^^

Imouto-chan ALMOST had a win in this episode. T_T

In the episode Kyon tells Haruhi that he’s ponytail-moe while they’re in the closure-space. He later comments on her ponytail in “Real life” too (“Niatteruze” -> Fits you). Guess they rewrote that a bit then.

  15. in the end, I pity kyon, having to live with a self centered little brat like haruhi over his shoulder screwing him out of any hope of happiness of his own. he’s pretty well been given the short stick in this deal. makes you ask yourself; if you can’t live for yourself, is it worth living? living for the sake of another is a noble thing, but, when it’s forced, it’s loathsome.

personally, I think someone in that world needs to slap some sense into the little bitch and get it through her head that as “god” she’s got a responsibility to all the people in the world, and being self centered is not acceptable. to hell with what she thinks. appeasment is a fool’s way out.

  16. Nya~~~
I’ve waited for this ep just to see
    1 – The kiss scene
    2 – Ponytailed Haruhi.

And I must say i’m impressed, even if it’s a bit different from the novel.
anyways, we need a second season. Volume 2 (Cultural festival, making of Asahina Mikuru Densetsu no Bouken, Shamisen) and many other chapters are still waiting to be animated.
but the funny thing is if this anime have a second season is that the chronological order would tranceds season.

  17. LOL. Destiny should arrange for a second season of haruhi! Hmm, but taking into account of the confusing timelines, i would prefer if kyoto stuck to a normal timeframe. =D SO Haruhi and kyon gets tgt in the end? Thats great! ahah. I think eben though kyon sounds exasperated at times, but i feel he really dosent mind haruhi, he probably just dosent know it =S

  18. how does being destined suck?
the kyon x mikuru relationship as shown by the anime seems kinda shallow, as it just revolves around breasts and nonsensical stuff…. sure, he might wanna bang her, but serious relationship??? don’t see that.
kyon x haruhi relationship actually evolves and become something more deep… lotsa episodes show how their relationship evolves. Check out the REAL last episode…. that should give u an indication of how close they’re getting; and also the cave episode of course.

Rewatch the wholes series in its proper order… you’ll notice the general flow and see things u might’ve missed. At least I did anyway… for the record, remember this is just episode 6 of 14. It’s actually quite amazing that the series could’ve been re-sequenced and was still as coherent as it was. The Kyoto animation guys are damn good.

and btw, Kyon does become more forceful and tells Haruhi off in some episodes; even though he knows the risk (the end of the world).

  19. this is highschool stuff, all that really matters is breasts and minor shiit.
yeah Haruhi’s exciting as hell, and kyon notices all of haruhi’s follies, but it seems too perfect (the whole opposites attract) it’d just be interesting to see kyon X mikuru stuff; doing this would allow material for more seasons and it wudn’t be repetetive.

    plus…mikuru’s soooo hottt

  20. I believe they chose the best music for the shinjin rampage scene. The text of the part 1, the part that is played in this episode, of the ‘Symphony of Thousand’ goes like this.

    Latin:
    Veni, Creator Spiritus,
    mentes tuorum visita,
    imple superna gratia
    quae tu creasti pectora.

    English:
    Come, Holy Spirit, Creator blest,
    and in our souls take up Thy rest;
come with Thy grace and heavenly aid
to fill the hearts which Thou hast made.

They could have chosen one of the music from Haydn’s Creation, but from ep.11, the Haruhi staff has shown a heavy preference to late Romantic and early 20th century music, the the choice of Mahler. Here are more informations for those who wants them.

  21. Aww…I can’t believe that’s the last episode. I’M GONNA MISS MIKURU!!! *CRIES*

*Ahem*….seems like a decent episode. It does show how important Kyon is to Haruhi and I’m kinda glad that Kyon express his feelings for Haruhi. I’m not sure whether Haruhi takes it seriously but after that incident, I’m sure Kyon sort of realise who he really likes. Now…..I’m gonna pray they have another Haruhi anime in the future.

I agree with you on this. Remember “Days of the Saggatarius”? When Kyons said that even if Haruhi lost, she won’t destroy the world, and Itsuki mentioning that he’s jealous of the understanding (he’s actually jealous that Kyon keeps ignoring his advance *shudder*) of Kyon and Haruhi, it shows that Kyon understood Haruhi more than anyone else. It’s just that he’s so shallow he doesn’t even notice that Haruhi has a crush on him.
Also, there is a chapter that tells us what really happened 3 years ago, and it involves kyon. (remember that haruhi mentioned that she thought she met Kyon before)

  23. I also thought that the kissing scene in the novel would be more romantic but if you take into account the situation then and Kyon’s personality, it does suit the scene. At that point in the novel, Kyon had only just known Haruhi. They had yet to reach that level of respect and trust that was explained by Itsuki in Ep 11, though they were still close in terms of friendship.

  24. Why do you people keep saying that the kiss was romantic (or wants it to be)!? It was never meant to be!!!

    1. Mikuru dropped hints.
    2. Yuki dropped a hint just before to confirm Mikuru’s hints.
    3. Kyon already says he has no interest in Haruhi romantically.
    4. Considering his personality, I doubt it.
    5. He was in a desperate situation.
    6. He did it so he could save the world, not feel her lips.

At the time, he still think Haruhi’s a bother. by the time we got to the 3rd novel, they are very much close

  26. Ok I just had to comment on this because haruhi was one of the best animes I had ever seen, and for those who are interested, check out http://www.baka-tsuki.net/project/index.php?title=Suzumiya_Haruhi for the novel translation. Those people are doing a real awesome job over there. One of the reasons why this anime is so awesome is because of the way that the story is written. Haruhi is god and everything revolves around her desire to have an interesting life. Haruhi likes Kyon, so in order for the relationship to be interesting to her, Kyon cannot easily just fall in love with Haruhi. This is why Kyon is easily annoyed by Haruhi and instead likes Mikuru. If Kyon were to simply like Haruhi then that would be boring for her, but at the same time Kyon could never be with Mikuru because that would go against Haruhi’s desire. God this series is so genius; it is incredible. There needs to be a second season. There is enough novel material for one.

  27. As for Kyon x Mikuru stuff, or rather the reason we won’t see much deeper relathionship of the two, I would point out the hair style comparison of Kyon’s sister and Mikuru.

OK let’s compare SSs, the middle one of the 5th row(Mikuru) and also the middle one of the 6th row(The lil sister). Especially on the forehead side, their hairs look veeery similar, to say the least.

This notion leads me to guess Kyon’s sister and Mikuru are related, possibly the former is(or will be, whatever) the mother of the latter. If so, Kyon is an uncle of Mikuru, and Mikuru should know that. And maybe thats a part of the reason why Mikuru seemed pretty comfortable with Kyon around all the way from the day 1, but seems to try not getting *that* intimate with him. Of course that’s also because she is prohibited to fall in love with people in the past(to her) time-space , and also because if those two fell in love, the godness of Haruhi could end this world with anger and disgust, though.

  28. The novels are still ongoing, right? I haven’t reallybeen keeping up with the Japan-side popularity, but I believe it’s been quite a hit there too. I doubt they’d just leave this series without a sequel given how incredibly well it’s done.

They’re probably just waiting for some more novel material to be made so they can animate it, as well as giving their funding a chance to take a breather after the huge big-bucks they must have used to have this level of animation for 14 episodes straight.

It would be a big huge risk to go the Bleach way and have fillers, because I don’t this series would be as good if we ended up straying from the story and making a side story. And what the heck would it be about?

you’ll be suprised on how much the anime skipped the novel. If it goes like this, the novel has about 2 seasons more worth of episodes

  30. the anime did skipped some parts of the novel. But all those it skipped is not very important. Like “describing the surrouding” and also Kyon’s continiuous bragging how Mikuru is better than Haruhi etc. There are so parts it skip from the novel like the teleportation device for the “day of sagtaritus”.

But due to the fact they skipped such parts, it makes the anime better. It is less draggy than the novel. All the important parts from the novel are clearly highlighted. Sometimes i get bored from reading the novel because Kyon had complained too much and he talk alot about the past which we already knew.

  31. Man I didn’t have an opinion on this anime. Seeing as I couldn’t muster up much of an opinion on Evangelion anyway, I’ll just say the one thing that distinguishes good anime from bad anime.

The time I spent watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (as well as Evangelion) was not wasted.

Still, did anyone else other than me feel that Kyon’s kiss on Haruhi was rather… forced?

  32. Just watched my copy of ep 14 and Haruhi was AWESOME !!!

Its gonna be my 10/10 series for the year .

Of course now a die-hardcore Suzumiya Haruhi series fan , I’ll join with the rest in saying there’s more to be wanted as an anime series . So the studio better deliver !

  33. After watching ep 14, I decided to go back and rewatch some of the earlier episodes starting from 1-4 and low and behold. If u watched ep14, go watch ep 4! It seems more like a continuatation from ep 14. Yeah, it was really rough to follow along the eps from the beginning of the series cuz things change around so much and there are so many little details that u have to pay attention to or u miss stuff. Now make sure to watch ep 14 carefully and than see ep 4. Enjoy! 😀 I hope to see a second season too, tehehehe.

  34. i really liked this episode but i was kind of expecting a bit more. it was still good though. and when kyon says he doesn’t think of haruhi as a classmate or how everyone else thinks of her, then what does he think of her as??

    hushhushyou
  35. I am almost willing to bet my life that they will make a season two.. Just think of all the money and positive reputation oppotunities they will miss out on if they didn’t! I still wonder about the whole three years ago thing.. Looks like I will just have to go through the novel ^^

    henohenomohejin
  36. I read all the comments… well some of u are making sense but others?… C’mon u guys, Kyon isn’t attracted to Haruhi? If u look closely at ep 14 when Kyon&Haruhi are runnig from the Celestial and Kyon tells Haruhi that he really liked the place back there, where their friends were, Haruhi suddenly stops and looks at him curiosly. Surely she’s in love with Kyon and because of him she would’ve changed the world it would just take some time to persuade her.
About a kiss: Kyon already guessed (when he was thinking about Aliens and Time Travelers hints) that kiss would change everything back as it was, but he didn’t kiss her the very moment he realised it(because some say he had no other chance), he started thinking about Haruhi, what she really meant to him and when he realised it only then! ONLY then he kissed her. And he didn’t care about Celestial cause Haruhi said they wouldn’t harm them, SO Kyon kissed her by his own intent.
Other than that Kyon liked Haruhi from the begining, because HE started a chat with her the first(and many other times) and he was atracted to her physically as well(he said in the begining that she was a beauty), the problem was that he didn’t think he had a chance with her because he knew she dumped all the guys who she went out with. It’s just he can’t believe and realise (until he discoveres it with others help) that shes in love with him!
Oh, and there’s also one thing: Mikuru and others… Haruhi could easily remake them and he knew that and he was not in a pinch because there would be no harm to him.

There are much more criterias and facts… so please take your time thinking as this anime isn’t the one u could wholy reailise with just one “see through” u must watch it at least 3-4 times…

  37. i’ve rewatched that ponytail part so many times, it’s just so funny(even though that’s not really the word i’d use to explain it)

i thought kyon’s voice actor was awesome, though all of the voice acting was top-notch. AND SOO WAS THE SHOWWWWW

    Batt!tz
  38. as in many romantic comedies, both Kyon and Haruhi stubbornly refuse to accept their own feelings towards each other…
gosh I’m gonna miss SOS brigade’s insane activities… next seson please!!!!

  39. Been watching series again in more or less the ‘chronological’ order, and I was surprised how many new things i noted when relating them to the correct timeline.

regarding ep14, the KyonXponytails ‘confession’ jumped out on me on my recent rewatching of ‘boredom os SH’ ep4 (broadcast) when Haruhi gets Mikuru-chan in the cheerleader outfit 😉

“hmm, a ponytail would be good here” > looks to Kyon > thinks: oh yeah, like hell i’m building up Mikuru in Kyon’s eyes > abandons idea……..

when i watched it originally i thought it was just Haruhi being her normal contrary self, how wrong I was.

I am probably the last person to notice this, and I only mention it cos despite what others have said, I found the episode shuffling to bring a new level of interest to me. I mean, I have watched each episode about 10 times now…….much more than any other anime i have, even those I have had for years 😉

Additionally, it seems obvious that Kyon in this ep realises that Haruhi likes him in a more than friends way, but I cannot chronologically see much change in his behaviour towards her……i mean, if i was the crush of a high omnipotent being who could blink out a world with a thought, i would be a little bit nervous. only thing i really noted that could tie in is that Kyon gets more vocal in refusing or diverting Haruhi’s ‘games’, as he seems to have realised that she follows his every command (wow, how cool would that be)

  40. I don’t think Haruhi will dump Kyon, because(i think) when Haruhi talk to him was unlike what she talk with other guys in Junior High. Maybe she was just too lonely so she had change. Let me tell U the Chapter2 novel was extremely perfect.

the 1st time Suzumiya Haruhi LONELY:12yrs old
When HARUHI GO TO North High:16 yrs old(she found SOS Dan in May = she was lonely till 13thMay)

Note:Eventually they were not destined like Midori no Hibi.

    U7
  41. You all are all wrong! Please think carefully Itsuki,Asakura,Nagato and Mikuru never said that Haruhi and Kyon are destined,OK. I’ll tell You why:Suzumiya Haruhi meet Kyon 3Years ago or they are childwood friends. Haruhi love Kyon the 1st time they met(I think)!! Haruhi need someone to talk to,like Mai from Mai HiME she was very lonely and motherless. Haruhi is lonely till she talked to Kyon(She talked to Kyon 9thMay).

I wish Kyon will understand Haruhi feeling and the past of Haruhi, Haruhi just wanted to talk alone with Kyon.

  42. sorry for my spam comments if U all read novel 4,you will see Kyon’s name(not sure if it is his real name),John Smith.

Why Mikuru said they can’t be together because (maybe they are brother and sister).

This just give a hint of novel 4,and in School Rumble NiGakki: Come on 3 gakki!

  43. I highly recommend reading the light novel version of this series, which you can find at baka-tsuki (google it). While Kyon and Haruhi don’t end up as a couple (if they did the series wouldn’t span 8 volumes), the relationships between Kyon and the rest of the cast develop in very interesting ways.

  44. I know that forcing love won’t do,but I think that Kyon is more pity than Sakai Yuuji(after watched finish Shakugan no Shana in Youtube for 3 days)

Sakai Yuuji is love triangle state;Kyon is in the love square state.

Ina few months later(for all Haruhi and Mikuru fans),I found that MikuruXKyon relationship is annoyed me!!!!!

Mikuru is a spolit child OK N’ Kyon is totally Baka.
I wish Kyon will reject the stalker of Haruhi and his process(Ashhina Mikuru)
If Kyon marry Mikuru, I will not forgive him!!

    I hate Mikuru.

    U7
  45. Sorry for this comment anyway I found that Mikuru like Yoshida(only a deducting process not they are spoilt)She is only a stalker.

(SHnY):If Kyon marries’ Mikuru in the future after Tanabata & upset Haruhi I’ll not forgive him & I’ll curse him to death!!!!!!
    Show Spoiler ▼

Mikuru is unforgivable;she knows that the more Kyon like her the more suffering they are(Kyon & Mikuru never realized that only Haruhi, Koizumi & Nagato)

Mikuru is more stupid than Kyon & she is too spoilt Kyon wild guesess will never come true.

Haruhi needs Kyon more than Mikuru. Mikuru is too annoying.

Kyo got many questions to asked Haruhi, about her past& more.He is in love with Mikuru by her appearance.(I wish all the Mikuru/Ashahina fans quit so nobody support MikuruxKyon)

I wish all of U see Baka-Tsuki & see the process of Kyon relationship between Suzumiya Haruhi ; Nagato Yuki & Ashahina Mikuru.

  47. What can I say? Awesome show, need more of it

There are indications that Haruhi Season 2 might air in Fall 2007. But I am not getting my hopes up until I see the REAL official announcement. Until then, here’s much hope for a superb follow up with season 2!

  48. I wish U all see Baka-Tsuki:The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi涼宮ハルヒの消失 Chapter 6.

Some episode of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu shows us that Haruhi ataully care for Kyon:Someday in The rain(ep9), Lone Island Scrome II(EP8),涼宮ハルヒの消失(Chapter 6)

Mikuru din’t care about Kyon at all in ep10,ep9.

If Mikuru fall the cliff with Kyon she and Kyon will do kissing or what.

    U7
  49. I don’t know why you guys prefer Mikuru, she has nothing but a cute appearance. I fall in love with Hiruhi and her personality. Deep down in your heart, you would see who can be a btter companion in life, Haruhi or Mikuru?

Actually this season hints their relationship as well. It’s not some hot love but it’s the kind of love that you get to understand each other bit by bit. It’s beautiful. I don’t read the novel, so I don’t know if they actually end up with each other, but there is one thing I can bet my life on (*_* rushing to my death, remembering Chiyo chan from AzumangaDaioh) that the 2 will get very close, that they can deeply understand each other. Becoming a real couple is just a matter of time.

BTW, Kyon didn’t really show “the love” because of his personality. You must watch the eps very carefully, you will she how much he understands Haruhi and cares about her. He just doesn’t realize it yet.

  50. haha…so far i’ve read about haruhi and asahina fans, but i’m all for yuki!!! 😀 but, i really feel that haruhi & kyon should be together lol – i want yuki for myself *grins*
ANYWAY, just for those who’s still confused about the actual chronological order of the anime – you guys realise that, after the end of every episode, where they’d show a short preview of the next episode, haruhi would always seemingly report the wrong number, and kyon would always correct her? Well, in actual fact, kyon is only reporting the correct NUMERICAL order, whereas haruhi’s reporting the correct CHRONOLOGICAL order. So actually, the correct chronological sequence would be ep: 2, 3, 5, 10, 13, 14, 4, 7, 6, 8, 1, 12, 11, 9.
Hmmm…and, not to disappoint anyone here, but i’ve read somewhere that there’s currently no definate plans for a season 2 (yet), and that anything we hear abt a season 2 in the works are jsut rumours, so, don’t get your hopes up (yet), yeah? Though personally, i wanna see it happen too 😛 Vol. 4 of the light novels rock! it’s my fav vol so far 😀

  51. At first, I was pondering whether KyoAni has the budget to actually do a second season of Haruhi with 24 eps, but now that I saw them pull it off with Kanon’s type of graphics

I don’t think budget is really a problem anymore 🙂

They have plenty of novel material to work with, so hopefully we will see season 2 after Clannad at Oct 2007

  52. This series also makes you wonder, i mean Itzumi was right that the biggest mystery of all is Kyon, he is suppose to be a normal human being yet he got mixed up with them. Also i dont know if you guys noticed, but Yuki seems to follow Kyon and only him. In that episode where they went to the beach house of Itzumi’s friend, when Yuki was asked not to open the door for anyone, she didnt even open the door which cause Haruhi to become irritated, but as Kyon told her that he will take over her order and asked Yuki to open door, she did so. Also the other episode where they had the battle the computer club, when Kyon ordered Yuki not to cheat, she followed him and notified him of the computer club’s cheating ways and modified the entire game code program, and in the end asked for Kyon’s permission. Even though Haruhi was supposed to be the boss of the team, as well as when the Computer club’s president wanted Yuki to come by their club sometimes, she looked at Kyon as if wanting for his approval.

  54. Is there going to be a season two to this? The only idea i have that could be good for season two is that Why does the world revolves around Haruhi and the reason why is that on her 10th birthday she wished for something fun and all of a sudden that birthday wish she made the world revolves around her. This is my best storyline for season two that i could think of the other thing i would like to see in season two (if they would do one) is does Kyon sister have a name they keep calling her Kyon sister. The other funny thing i would find funny is that Kyon meets a vampire or werewolf.

  55. whee-ness- I want to come to where ever you are right now, put my hands around your neck, and shake some sense into you. Are you insane (in a bad way)!? Haruhi and Kyon were meant to be, and Mikuru has to be the most annoying character in the show!

Saint X- She probably thinks it might be, but isn’t sure.

  56. I believe this anime is one of the best animated animes i ever saw.

The story is top notch too. But after ready a good quantity of comments here and there i wonder why everybody seems to accept the fact that Haruhi is the god everybody thinks she is. Or rather why does everybody thinks Kyon is a regular human being ?

Is it because of what Itsuki said at some point is the series ? Or maybe because he is the narrator ?

But what proof do we have that he is “normal” ?

I have the feeling that everything revolves around Kyon, not Haruhi. All the characters, all the stories, all the mysteries. He is always half surprised, half blasé about what happens around him. Wouldn’t he be the bored one rather than Haruhi ?

    Think about it !

The first monologue he delivers in episode 2 (chronologically the first one), about how he doesnt believe in santa claus but in aliens, espers and time travelers … way before he meets with Haruhi.

Why do we only see these kind of special persons around later on if it isnt for him to somehow “summon” them ? How come it isnt some other kind of special stuff ? It is way too convenient in the story to be just a mere coincidence.

Furthermore, the whole plot revolves around him. All the characters open to him, and only to him. All of them. Haruhi who never talked to anyone before, ditto Yuki, Itsuki etc. The cast is made for him to enjoy. The cosplay i find especially revealing, why on earth would a GIRL (Haruhi) take such interest in bunny costumes and maid outfits ? The answer is she is there (her personality, the club activities) to put them on Mikuru and herself for Kyon’s guilty pleasure. There are several clues during the series as to how much he enjoys this.

I dont think the world revolves around Haruhi. I believe Kyon was bored and created everything.

The whole theory Itsuki discloses to Kyon while in the cab, going to the “closed space” where he will see his first giant is also (i believe) a clue to that end. If Haruhi was the one creating the universe around her, i dont believe it could be like this, it just doesnt fit with her personality. She would be the one talking with the aliens, living the adventures, witnessing all the stuff Kyon does. Yet she doesnt, why is that? My explanation is that the cave metaphor (or whatever else it is named) applies instead to Kyon. Think about it, rewatch the show, it all fits.

Why does he never believe the murder is a real one on the island ? Is it because he has faith in Haruhi like Itsuki tells him at the end ? Or is it because he KNOWS he would not do this himself, were he the real one behind all of this ?

I also happen to find the narrative process highly suspicious. The way he is the main observer of the plot and the characters reminds me of Agatha Christie’s “Ten Little Niggers” or “Ten Little Indians” for you Americans. It is (for me) just a clever trick to deceive us.

To summarize, Haruhi being the “god” of this worlds just doesnt fit. Replace her with Kyon everything makes sense regarding his personality.

Now wether she also is something else (a bit like a god like him) i dont know. Maybe, maybe not. I read that there is a whole book with the story going on without her … How is that possible if she is the central character of this world ?

well enough ramblings. I’ll rewatch the show later and see if i can pick anything else.

  57. I just read lots of stuff from other forums speculating on the Kyon-God theory I exposed right there. Makes me happy to have foreseen it by myself, makes me sad not to be the only one xD

But here you go, i read this on another board, and though it really interesting. Maybe it has nothing to do on this blog, but it illustrate my previous rambling. It is the first speech Kyon gives in the anime, but much more elaborate. Read for yourselves :

“”I wanted to be the one who saved the girl kidnapped by aliens and imprisoned in a bowl-like fortress. I wanted to be the one who used my courage, intelligence and trusty laser gun to fight against villains from the future trying to change history for their own gain. I wanted to be someone who could banish demons and monsters with a single spell, battle against mutants or psychics from evil organizations, and engage in telepathic fights!

But wait, calm down. If I really were ever attacked by aliens or whatever, how could I ever possibly fight against them? I don’t even have any special powers!

Well then, how about this: one day, a mysterious new student transfers to my class. Except he’s really an alien or from the future, and he has telepathic abilities. When he gets into a fight with the bad guys, all I need to do is find a way to get involved in his war. He’ll handle all the fighting and I can just be his flunky sidekick. Oh my god, this is great, I am so clever!

Or maybe, if that doesn’t work, how about this: one day, a mysterious power inside me awakens, something like a telekinetic or psychic ability. I discover that a lot of other people in this world also have similar powers, and then some sort of paranormal society recruits me. I’ll become part of this organization and protect the world against evil mutants.

Unfortunately, reality is surprisingly cruel… No one got transferred to my class. I’ve never seen a UFO. When I went to places that were rumored to be haunted, nothing showed up. Two hours of intense staring didn’t make my pencil move a single millimeter, and glaring at my classmate’s head didn’t reveal his thoughts to me either. I couldn’t help but get depressed at how normal the laws of physics were. I began to stop watching for UFOs and paying attention to paranormal TV shows because I finally convinced myself it was impossible. I even reached a point where I only had a sense of nostalgia for those things.”

is a quote from Kyon from the light novels. it says clearly that he wants to see all this stuff but doesn’t really want to be too involved, but just a sidekick. And all the events happened so far in the anime, confirms what happened, and therefore proves to anextent that he could be considered as God.”

  58. Why i’d like to know is how much free will and unique personality all of the SOS Dan really have. Are they independent and sentient beings? Or just the thoughts and wishes of Kyon?

And have they realized that He is God (or something akin)? I wonder, and guess we wont know ’till the end of the books, as that would kill the story. My guess is that they know allready, at least Yuki knows something of that i am sure. (“I will protect you”).

My chips on Kyon being the man.

  59. I like the art, fluent animation, and the story starts off strong and ended with a big jaw opening WTF?!

The final episode ruined the whole excitement I find this this series. I am sorry but I find this anime to be too overrated.

  60. I’m NOT SURE but from what I heard, words going around that Haruhi’s original second season was cancelled and that a new director has been hired for the next Haruhi which I think can be roughly translated to “The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya”. Again I’m NOT SURE ABOUT THESE DETAILS.

    I HOPE it’s true though. 😛

  61. I too found this to be an annoyingly overrated series, but watching it again, in the chronological order knowning that there’s more (in the books and the second season) has just made it one of my all-time favorite anime.

  62. Wow! I love this episode! I especially love how Kyon said: “That ponytail looked so good on you, it was criminal.” To Haruhi. And the next day Haruhi is wearing a ponytail. It just shows how much more Haruhi cares about Kyon. 🙂

  63. Huruhi Suzumiya was an interesting anime. I actually just finished watching it (dubbed) recently, and found the order of the episodes to be completely confusing, having watched them on DVD. I’m not sure what I would have thought of the series if I had seen it in the broadcasted order. Ie, episode 14 is episode 6 on the DVD, and episode 14 on the DVD was episode 9 in the broadcast. Still, I enjoyed the series a lot.
