The end of the year is always a good time to reflect on what we’ve seen these past four or so seasons. I’m still in the process of writing up my opinions on the Best of Anime 2006, but I was wondering what everyone else thought. And so, listed below are 99 series that aired in the year 2006 (plus “Other” at the very bottom to make an even 100). I have my suspicions on how people will vote, but I’m very curious to see how this really turns out. Choose your favorite and the winner will get included in next week’s post!

Disclaimer – The methodology that I chose was to include series that:

  • Started in Fall of 2005 but aired the majority of its episodes in 2006. Examples: Mai-Otome, Blood+.
  • Started in Winter, Spring, or Summer of 2006.
  • Started in Fall of 2006 and aired the majority of its episodes in 2006. Examples: Soukou no Strain counts because it airs the majority of its episodes in 2006, even if it doesn’t completely finish until February because of large breaks. However, CODE GEASS does not count because it will have only aired 11 episodes by the end of this year. GEASS fans will have to wait for the second poll coming later this week on favorite Fall 2006 series.
  • Even with these requirements, there were still a few minor/kiddie/unpopular shows that I didn’t include. If for some reason you felt that Sasami Mahou Shoujo Club was the best series this year, then you can always vote under “Other.”

Note: This poll will close Wednesday, December 20th, 2006 at 11:59 PM.

The poll is now closed. Official tallies will be announced soon.

    1. Here’s my “A list” for 2006, according to your ground rules:

      Nerima Daikon Brothers
      Sugar Sugar Rune
      Black Cat
      Noein
      REC
      xxxHolic TV
      Zegapain
      Kamisama Kazoku
      Welcome to the NHK
      Kemonozume

I voted for Zegapain on your list, but Kemonozume is a close second for me.

I don’t know if the following series should be on the list, because I don’t know how long they are running, but they are also on my “A list” :

      Ghost Hunt
      Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge
      Bakumatsu

      Dave B

      Dave Baranyi
    2. Are polls even allowed to have 100 choices? If I had started mass downloading at the beginning of the year or end of last year, then this would be incredibly hard. However, I only started downloading anime during the summer, so there are only few shows that I’ve actually watched. So the choices are limited for me, but still difficult. Suzumiya Haruhi? Mai-Otome? Zero no Tsukaima? Utawarerumono? Fate/Stay Night? Canvas2?

But I’ll pick Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuu’utsu on this one because of the awesomeness of episode 12 😀

    3. i abstained. too hard to decide one winner. a better way to vote should be a ranking system, like rank your top 3 favorites (or probly top 5 cuz of the number of choices). I have a hard time choosing between: haruhi, fate, zegapain, xxxholic

    4. Haruhi is the hot favorite among internet yahoos; certainly a cult classic.

However, it seems that NANA is the show most likely to stand the test of time.

I voted for Asatte no Houkou, by the way.

    5. There are a few I like:
      Mai-Otome
      Simoun
      Fate/ stay night
I also liked Suzumiya Haruhi, Strawberry Panic! and .Hack Roots.
All in all I really don’t know what to choose^^
      For me it’s a run between Mai-Otome and Simoun^^

    6. I’m not; Suzumiya is one of those shows that will gather an extremely rabid following in a small part of the population.

Other shows may not have as many zealots on their side, but have the advantage of wider appeal.

I still stick by my original prediction; NANA will be the most remembered among the bunch (Honey & Clover doesn’t count; the 2006 run was a sequel).

    7. I chose Mai-Otome, but for me, Haruhi came in close.

I did enjoy Haruhi, but after the 7th episode I started to lose interest. For Otome, I enjoyed it all the way and I’m also enjoying the OVAs.

Stargazer was too short, both the episode number and the length-per-episode, and because of that, it fell out of my A-list despite the better-than-average good storyline and excellent, in my opinion, animation.

Also, with all the titles mentioned in the poll, it just made it harder to choose the anime series I loved the most.

    8. simoun, noein, and Solty Rei doesn’t seem to have a huge following
i watched it and liked it but i personally only watched the eps only once.

i really want to not say that haruhi was the best of the best but i can honestly say i watched more than 1 ep more than once, especially ep 12 and i’m sure everyone knows why.
I will have to sit down and actually watch this series again by the ep count that they list via the preview but i’ll do that later

and boy has time flown by, i was looking for Air, too bad kanon isn’t on the list

But due to slow fansubbing (i’m not dissing them, i’m glad it’s subbed at all and i waited for it)the first two shows i mentioned as well as others probably caused these and a few other’s popularity to drop or not even gain motivation. Zegapain is also part of this. now that all the eps are out, i haven’t felt like i wanted to finish the series yet.

then there’s also the 50+ ep shows, i stopped watching blood at around ep 30 and only finished after the last ep was subbed. it was great and all but the length of it made me lose interest

mai otome is pretty high up there, it’s what everyone was expecting what mai hime was going to be.

I am going to go with Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu because right now i can feel like i could watch every single ep over and over if forced too, especially if they show ep 12

    9. Haruhi will win by a landslide.

For me, I’ll break down into seasons.

      Fall 2006
Best – Mai-Otome (if only Rozen Maiden was 26 episodes…)
Worst – Blood+ (Style over substance? I don’t think so. Though I did pummel through all 50 episodes for the hell of it)

      Winter
Best – Magikano (lol I watched it just 2-3 weeks ago)
Worst – Fate/Stay Night (absolute bomb. damn game fanboys)

      Spring (asides from Haruhi)
Best – Ouran High School Host Club
Worst – Tsubasa Chronicle 2 (dropped it half-way through)

      Summer
Best – Welcome to the NHK!
Worst – Zero no Tsukaima (entertaining at best)

Fall (asides from Kanon and Death Note)
      Best – Asatte no Houkou
Worst – Mamoru-kun (watched the 2 subs released this past week, and I’ll conclude that it’s worse than Happiness!, which I just watched an hour ago)

Honorary mentions: Galaxy Angel-rune, CODE GEASS, (upcoming) Rozen Maiden: Ouverture.

    10. Um, do you mean that polls end Wednesday 20th or Friday 22nd?
It’s okay if it’s Friday, gives me more time to think about it. Anyways, my top nominations are:
      – Ouran HSHC
      – Suzumiya Haruhi
      – Fate/Stay Night
      – Mai Otome
      – School Rumble Nigakki
      – Tsubasa Chronicle

    11. ^_^ Looks like Haruhi was the obvious choice here; but my feelings are with Fate/Stay Night thanks to Ayako Kawasumi. Since September last year, Fate was one of my most anticipated series of this year. Then when I found that Ayako would be Saber, my heart begins to beep a little faster and faster. Maybe at the end I was a little disappointed with the outcome, but we all knew “that end” was coming.

Right, Haruhi Suzumiya no Yuuutsu was a great hit, yet for me Fate/Stay Night was a… GREATEST HIT

      Syaoran Li
    12. I choose Black Lagoon… Apparently it’s not a popular favorite anime of choice. The reason I didn’t choose Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu is simple. It was the harem-esque element of it… Despite being a girl anime viewer, I greatly prefer awesome gun-fu and mindless action found in Black Lagoon over cosplay rape, a delusional meglomanical god, a possibly gay esper and so on found in SHnY…

      Nagumo
    13. i picked something that was rather mellow, aria the natural, even though i know no one else will probably choose it. Peaceful, enduring and a feel-good anime, there’s nothing else to dislike about this series that is humbly presented this year.

    14. I absolutely cant stand the bandwagon effect on Haruhi…90% of the time, people will respond as to why the series is good using the exact same rationale as the person whom blogged before them. The joke works well the first few months, but honestly…at least come up with some more original responses…other than “its an original series and Mikuru is uber moe!!!” or “Shes God, how dare you?!?!?!”

::prepares for a rain of pitchforks, torches, and dirty boxers::

Voted for Shakugan no Shana…original plotline, great artwork, smooth action, tickled my philosophical bone, world class voice talent, and plenty of lolicon. All the same reasons I like Haruhi as well coinfidentally, but I think Shana had more balance. Plus, KOTOKO does the OP/OP2…you just cant touch that.

      starcaptor
    15. SHnY for its mode of storytelling and re-arrangement of episodes. Terribly brilliant and post-modern. Besides the genki-ness of Haruhi is oh-simply-so-amazing. A+ for mise-en-scene. A+ for narrative. A+ for direction.

FSN for its tragic ending and character designs.

    16. i just watched Ergo Proxy and thought the world of it. perhaps i’m biased, i don’t know… but i feel that it was fairly underated. maybe it’s the cyberpunk too, but that doesn’t explain why Ghost in The Shell SAC keeps coming back for more 😀 ah, well…

      fugue
    17. i know no one else will vote for it but i’m going with Gintama. I never watched Haruhi, nor did i see Blood plus XD but Gintama always brings a smile to my face and after a long day at work or school thats what i need.

      Bomber D Rufi
    18. Honey & Clover, Haruhi and Mushishi are the top 3 for me, with Akagi (noticable absentee, considering I’m almost certain it qualifies given your conditions) and Ouran rounding out the top 5 and Higurashi and ARIA the Natural deserving honourable mentions. I guess it’s no surprise what’s number 1 on your poll and H&C is approximately where I’d expect it, but I am a little disappointed that Mushishi is so low. Makes me suspect not nearly enough people saw it.

    19. Ouran for me. It made me laugh way more than Suzumiya did. I guess it’s because it’s more straightforward than the sometimes confusing storyline of Suzumiya (credits given to Suzumiya for unique story telling though!). Ouran appeals to a wider range of audience than Suzumiya (my guess), but Suzumiya has a larger fanbase. But I’ll vote for Ouran anyday! Kudos for making viewers feel warm and fuzzy inside besides providing a lot of laughter!

    20. Never been too fond of these kind of “pick your favorite” polls, as unfortunately, when you only get to pick once, especially when there’s one choice (coughharuhicough) that you can pretty much guarantee is going to win, some choices which would be #2 or #3 on most people’s lists don’t get the representation they deserve. That said, I voted for my #2 choice, considering my #1 is pretty much guaranteed to win with or without my vote.

I was going to post a personal top ten, but considering I had a hard time finding 10 series on this list that I’ve seen most the episodes of, and there waa a pretty decent drop off in quality and enjoyment around #6 or #7, here’s my top five instead.

1 – Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu
      2 – Black Lagoon
      3 – Mushishi
      4 – Muteki Kanban Musume
5 – Ouran High School Host Club

Please note a couple of things. First, this is only representative of my personal enjoyment, as Mushishi would be a resounding #1 if my choices were based on quality. Second, I’d like to note my disappointment at being unable to vote for a series that will have aired 50-odd episodes this year but isn’t on the list. If Keroro Gunsou qualiifed for this poll, it’d probably be my #2.

    21. hey! where are the Shakugan no Shana fans???
well i voted Shakugan no shana!! i dont know why….
as ‘starcaptor’ said its a great anime of the year! well i dont know why would everyone voted for haruhi…well for some reasons that maybe i just dont know why…

but i’m still loyal to shana!! go shana!!

      zaira
    22. sigh… Haruhi has got to be one of the most overrated animes i’ve seen. Not to say it isn’t good, because it’s great, but the amount of popularity it’s gotten despite being only 14 episodes with only a few really good ones just boggles my mind.

      JR
    23. i had a hard time choosing between the two haruhis :/ But i chose Ouran at the end because of its ending. Ironic because im currently rewatching suzumiya haruhi >.> But ouran was more consistently funny IMO. Though suzumiya haruhi had some good comedy like the baseball episode as well as episodes with blowaway animation quality like the nagato vs class president one.

      h0f5
    24. for me, im torned between ouran and blood+.
but knowing that many will vote for ouran, i’ve decided to choose blood+ =)

still, i think higurashi (talking from the point of a non-higurashi-gamer view) and zegapain also deserves compliments for storyline…

    25. Wow….this may be one of the hardest choices I’ve had to make in my entire lifetime. I think I’ll go with BLOOD+ or Strawberry Panic, since SHnY will get enough love without my vote.

I don’t think this is meant to be a competition, so let’s try not to make it into one :p

      Alchemic-Desire
    26. It wasn’t really easy to pick between Haruhi and ZEGAPAIN… But I ended up going with the least popular one (it surely deserves more attention). Here’s hoping it gets a special spot in your year rankings which I’m looking forward to see 🙂

      Ahuri
    27. Well, Shakugan no Shana, I guess. It’s a pretty tight battle for me for MoHS, F/S N, Utawarerumono, Mai-Otome among others, but SnS has left the best impression on me so far. It’s exactly because of it that I’ve been more active in watching anime. Even though I’m convinced that hyped series like MoHS will probably take the cake, my vote goes to what I think is the best anyway.

      Cheers.

      Owaranai Destiny
    28. My favorite of the year must be Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu!!!
This was already foretold that Haruhi would win over everyone after the last episode aired in June. BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

      Nobunaga
    29. Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru got my vote. Its a surprise hit for me, as I usually pass up on this genre. This anime is a reverse Ouran (also better written than Negima), so fans of both series should check out this sleeper hit :p

      Bladewind
    30. god dmn it! I do that everytime! that > opposite cancels my messege!!!

anyway, I wanted to say that I wanted to vote for haruhi as well, but so many others did. so personally I voted for Canvas2, because nobody will vote for it… and it’s a really good anime.
only for episodes 3 and 5 I would’ve watch the whole series again! ^^

    31. i guess ill vote for Fate Stay night to bump it up. Too bad i couldn’t vote for more than one=[. Besides whats so good about Suzumiya Haruhi? I admit it is a good anime but seriously was it THE BEST?

      cleanwater
    32. I don´t like this kind of a pool because there´s alot of genres here!!you should create pools like this:
      Comedy
      mecha
      romance
      school kids
      harem –
      echii – H
      action
      parody
      drama
best show for kids – hey OMNI SASAMI could be here 😀
      fantasy – FATE….etc
      horror
best remake – LIKE KANON for example!!
Best game anime – LIKE DISGAEA 😀
Originality – like ( Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu ) or (Yomigaeru Sora – Rescue Wing)
      Fiction
and the list goes on…..Sorry i am not going to vote because i liked too many of these ones at the same degree!!And I am convicted that there was too many good ones among them!!
Best classic anime – Ah! My Goddess – Sorezore no Tsubasa 😀
I am an old otaku (30) and with my experience on animes i´d tell you that this year we had a very nice competition!!
PS: the ones i´ve posted on this topic are just for reference….because I HAVE AN OPINION BUT IT´S NOT POSTED HERE 😉

      tensai_otaku
    33. the best show for 2005-2006 that makes me go AooH is Noein, I didn’t feel this stupendous feeling for such a long time..Blood+ is a good anime too, but It doesn’t has that weird story like noein

      hananon
    34. I’d have to say it’s between Mushishi and Noein. I ended up voting for Mushishi. I enjoyed those two the most. They were definitely well made and had you think afterwards and left an impression, which can’t be said about most shows 🙂

      Fruits
    35. Like many others I had alot of favourites from this year, but in the end I decided to vote for Zegapain. I loved the plot and characters and was certainly one of the gems from the year.

On a side note I’m curious what the polls would look like if it was genre based, like favourite comedy, mecha, etc etc. Since it was really obvious that Haruhi would win any sort of poll haha.

      dg04
    36. ugh… im disgusted and the votes for shana, haruhi, Zero and ouran. WTF?? wut happened to concepts like story and directing? Black Lagoon, H and C II, mushishi, NOEIN, fate stay night and utawarerumono was far superior. Why do people follow fads and trends… ~sigh~

      kauldron26
    37. The haruhi show was really bad lol… the story made no sense and jumped around every other episode. I just think the character was the charm for most people. I voted for fate but I think Zero definately belongs up there also. The story in zero was fairly original even if you can say it sort of had a matrix feel to it.

      Ninjikiran
    38. To be honest, I watched only two of these shows this season. Nevertheless, chosing between Ouran and Nana is a really difficult task. How can I decide? Ouran was sweet and stuff, with all these jokes, funny characters and absolutely beautiful animation. What a pity they screwed the ending (which I hated). As a result, Nana wins – but those were not the only reasons. The truth is that it’s storyline, unique sense of humour and – let me say it aloud – THE BEST CHARACTERS EVER made me completely and hopelessly fall for this series. Seriousy, I adore it. And the last but not least: Ouran is bound to score high without my vote while Nana definitely deserves more attention than it receives…

      Yumegari
    39. i think this poll is too early since there was anime which is not complete aired yet ..
and that anime, should not be voted just because we dont know how the ending is going to be happened .. the ending for anime is including the part must to be aware of to be choosing as the best anime of the year … dont understand what im talking about? then DIE!

      si gila
    40. yes it’s a hard decision, I love Suzumiya, but i also loved utawarerumono too, and shakugan no shana. AHHHHHHHHHH,

I guess i’ll choice suzumiya since that one was the most funny to me.

      Darkdam
    41. Higurashi for me. I feel in love with that. I am so happy they are going to make the rest of the arcs.

Haruhi will win most likely. It was good as well just didn’t give me the feeling like Higurashi, I hope that it too will have another go.

      S-chan
    42. If I had known no one would have voted for Saiunkoku Monogatari I would have chosen that instead. Surely I can’t be the only one who adores that series? 🙁

Such a difficult decision regardless — Haruhi, Ouran, Mushishi, HachiKuro…all so deliciously wonderful. Mmmmmm. 😀

    43. There are so many great series – Haruhi, Higurashi no naku koro ni, Shakugan no Shana, Zero no Tsukaima, xxxHOLiC, Tsubasa Chronicles, Utawareru Mono, Zegapain, and on and on and on… (and I’m excluding running series here… without that, it would be even longer) – so hard to chose

Guess I go with the series that had the largest wow-effect/was the most touching for me – Canvas 2.

      Gloranor
    44. I voted for Power Puff Girls Z. lol

I can see how people voted for the other top choices and quite frankly, I enjoyed a whole variety of shows this year.

But something about PPGZ was simply lighthearted and just fun to follow. Other “mostly released in 2006” shows I could’ve voted for was Pretty Cure Splash Star.

And Black Jack 21 is another underdog mention with a lot of great drama and action.

      Shippoyasha
    45. I’m the 2nd person to vote for Canvas 2. As good as Haruhi was, too many of the episodes followed the same formula. Canvas 2, had relatively fewer throw away episodes than Haruhi did, and serves as model for how erogames should be adapted.

Btw, throw away episodes in Haruhi, baseball and 2nd half of murder mystery island. Delaying the 2nd half to show the baseball episode, effectively killed the atmosphere. 2 episodes for a short series.

Canvas 2 – Principal episode and 24 parody episode. 2 episodes for a long series.

    46. a better way to vote should be a ranking system, like rank your top 3 favorites (or probly top 5 cuz of the number of choices).
wish it’s a multiple voting system. Guess that’s why the question ask for favourite rather than favourites.
I agree it would be a better way to do it, but I’m limited technologically. If you can show me a WordPress plug-in that does this, then I’ll be glad to use it. Otherwise, I don’t have the time or motivation to code one myself.

If the vote button actually did anything, I’d vote Mushishi.
Not sure what your problem is, but I believe this voting plug-in doesn’t work for certain browsers. I tested it and it was fine for IE and Firefox, but not Opera.

On a side note I’m curious what the polls would look like if it was genre based, like favourite comedy, mecha, etc etc. Since it was really obvious that Haruhi would win any sort of poll haha.
That’s too big of a logistical nightmare. Each series can potentially have multiple genres that it belongs to and I’d have to go through all 99 series and figure out what it best represents (and even then I’m sure there’d be tons of controversy). That’s a ton of work that I don’t have time to do.

      I dont see sumomomo.
I think it needs to be there

Did you read the eligibility requirements I wrote up top? Sumomomo Momomo doesn’t qualify because it’s 26 total eps and will have only aired 12 before the end of the year.

i think this poll is too early since there was anime which is not complete aired yet ..
and that anime, should not be voted just because we dont know how the ending is going to be happened .. the ending for anime is including the part must to be aware of to be choosing as the best anime of the year

Again, read the eligibility requirements I posted above. This is the inherent difficulty of multiple season anime coupled with deciding the best anime of a certain year.

      Where is KANON ?
This was a personal oversight, my apologies. Based on syoboi, I was under the impression Kanon was 26 total episodes, not the 24 it’s supposed to be. If Kanon had indeed been 26, it wouldn’t have made the list because series would have aired exactly 13 episodes, qualifying for the next year (that was the decision I made when I put Shana into this year’s list since Shana was in the same situation last year – though technically Shana has an OVA and several shorts working in its favor too). It’s too late to add it now, but you can vote for Kanon in the favorite Fall 2006 anime poll coming later this week.

    47. Omni, it would have been easier if we were asked to pick 1 out of 10, but to pick only 1 choice out of 100 is just too hard a task. You should always consider giving people at least 10 choices in a shortlist of 100.

I would be forced to pick just Suzumiya Haruhi and ignore other good and entertaining series like Mai Otome, Honey and Clover II, Strawberry Panic and Shakugan no Shana to name but a few.

As a result, I’ve decided to abstain. I just can’t choose like that.

      Kinny Riddle
    48. Omni do not bother what the rest suggest to you! I view it as a form of critize instead of advice! People Omni already is very busy and yet he still substain this website! He is a great Guy so don’t give him anymore Suggestion where he do not have the time to do!

Omni I support you all the way =)

      DeZheKun
    49. well, haruhi supposed to be better in the 2nd season, but i think for the title ‘the best’ itself will be for the most enjoyable which is haruhi ^^ (as for aesthetics in storytelling and life-lessons, mushishi may be the best, but it’s not a back2back enjoyment, like haruhi or ouran or zegapain) but still.. i chose mushishi lol

      soltaire_rev

It’s a complete trade-off of how many people I have complaining and what I’m technologically limited to. If I could give people the option of choosing their top 10 out of 100, I would. But as I said before, there’s no plug-in to do that, and I’m not about to write one. Asking people just to write out their top 10 would be hellish to tally and I just don’t have the time for that (never mind the fact that not everyone would speak out).
On the other hand, if I were to personally whittle the list down to the 10 anime I thought deserved the top spot and had people vote on that, I’d get a ton more complaints from people unhappy that their favorite series wasn’t on the list. If you look at the voting, only a handful of series haven’t received at least one vote, meaning that there’s always someone out there who likes a certain series better than anything else.
I truly feel that this method is the best way given the limitations of time and technology, and there have only been a handful of complaints compared to what I could have gotten.

    51. It’s a shame that Suzumiya Haruhi aired this year, because there’s a LOT of good shows that any other year would have been the best. I voted for Haruhi, but after that my favourite has been Otogi Jushi Akazukin, because Tamura Yukari is

      Hmm

    53. >>>is it possible to see the vote in numbers instead of percentage?

2528 * .%% = voila. They’re also listed in order of votes, so currently, Otogi Jushi Akazukin (whatever this is lol) has the least votes and has votes.

As for people who’ve abstained, 2528 people don’t agree with you. 🙂

that’s not percise enough given the numbers now well over 2500…1% could range from 25-49 votes and anything less than 0% could still have votes in them

i wanna see which 1% and 0% shows are doing better lol

    55. This has turned into a pretty stellar year for anime… I have a dozen that I’ve enjoyed immensely (REC, Karin, Kanon, Ouran, Bokura, Hatakari, etc). Haruhi owns me, however (or maybe its Yuki, hard to tell) 🙂

    56. My vote: Fate/stay night-it was the last episode that did it for me. It was very emotional and Saber’s one of my fav anime characters.

Second choice: Ouran Host Club-thoroughly enjoyed it but that was that-pure fun entertainment.

Last choice: Suzumiya Haruhi-very annoying main protagonist. I would’ve enjoyed it more if it weren’t for those hardcore Haruhiists trying to shove the whole ‘Haruhi is God’ business down my throat all the time.

    58. Definitely Ouran High School Host Club for me.
Some others I liked this year were Honey & Clover II, Black Cat (since it’s on the list), Death Note, Asatte No Houkou, and Bartender.
Ouran High School Host Club just blew me away though.
