I talked the other day about how there was an announcement concerning Suzumiya Haruhi coming on Tanabata (today), which was the same day as some special events in the third novel. Well, it seems that Kyoto Animation has produced a publicity stunt of sorts by uploading a 22-minute flash promotional video onto the official website depicting the events of that night in live action (with Haruhi and “John Smith”) from a security camera point of view. For those of you with niconico accounts, you can watch it here since the official site appears to be down at the moment from probably getting hammered by all the fans trying to access it. For those of you without accounts, there’s also a torrent of it available on Tokyo Toshokan. In any case, I’m very impressed by the extent to which Kyoto Animation is promoting this show since this video matches perfectly with the Newtype magazine announcement. I expect that this will eventually make its way one of the DVDs for the second anime season, but for now, this is almost like getting a glimpse of what a live-action Haruhi would be.

That sounds funny coming from someone who never bought a DVD to support the creator.

  2. Ok then Nano-nano how do you explain the fact that they do blogs on the dvd specials for things like mai otome?

Anyway onto the actual topic, the live action thing was ok…and thats about it really ^^

  3. @Badgerman-
You can get rips of DVD specials on torrents and the such quite easily. Just look at all the Code Geass ones floating around; heck, I have a few of those.

Not implying anything against Omni, of course. I’m just saying.

  4. Was there something that was suppose to happen. I wasted 22 minutes of my life watching that…
I guess its an inside thing if you’ve read the novels and the part that it is based on.
Maybe someone can enlighten us on what they were doing who has read this part in the novel?

“Events in the third novel”. I’m not going to spoil it, but the Wikipedia entry for that particular novel reveals all.

  6. I don’t know what’s more impressive: KyoAni and Kadokawa’s marketing inventiveness, or the fact that many of us would watch 22:51 of that, wondering what Haruhi was saying to “John Smith,” and wondering who was playing Haruhi and Kyon. I think there is a small chance it was indeed Aaya and Sugita. Yes, I am sure there are a lot of people it will not impress, if the Konata “muuu” ad is any indicator. Color me impressed. This may not work as well as “Muuu”, but I love it that they are daring enough to try this kind of viral marketing again and again.

  7. hmm at 1st even i dont know whats was happening other than someone was drawing pattern, but after reading partially of volume 3 only i figure out that it was 3 years ago when Haruhi draw that pattern in school, heck i cant wait to see this ep gets animated, it’ll be good for sure.

  8. I thought the second season would be nowhere as mad, much more serious and less fun overall. Looks like KyoAni is thinking otherwise.
I’ve got their company logo on my altar already. They had better not disappoint me.

  9. To those confused about what you’re seeing, I present some content from the first chapter of the first volume, a scene that was shown in the first (chronological) episode of the series, and while I have wrapped it in spoiler tags to save space, it can not be considered a spoiler for anyone who has seen this scene. If anyone has not seen the first season and still clicks it, well, you deserve to be spoiled for reading this far into a post that is obviously about the second season.

That clear things up for anybody?

  10. Sorry about the doublepost, but I forgot to give credit for the above. Much love to the Baka-Tsuki novel translation project, and to the author, Tanagawa Nagaru.

  11. This is them saying “We already have a virtual faction of fanboys clamoring for the second season, so we don’t even have to do a promo. Screw trying to recruit new fans, we’ll just do this security cam video and the fanboys will love it like they love everything we do”.

That was also what they did with Lucky Star, Name recognition of the studio that did Haruhi alone made it unnecessary for them to need a straight up promo so they did “Muuuuuuuu”, because the massive number of fanboys they already had from Haruhi would love it regardless of what they did. They really don’t need to do anything difficult ever again at this point.
