Summary:

Having escaped from the spa resort, Jin, Toa, and Gio are hiding out in the city trying to figure out what to do. Jin wants to return to Earth with Toa and live quietly in a small town where they won’t be found. Toa seems to be willing to do this, but Gio walks off by himself and stares up at the sky. Jin goes after him to ask if he’ll come live with them too, and he reassures Gio that he’s not getting in the way. As they’re sleeping later that night, Toa gets a vision of Thanatos, but she calls it “Mother.” After telling it that she hasn’t forgotten her mission and promising to bring everyone back, she wakes up. Talking to the still-sleeping Jin, Toa expresses how happy she was that he wanted to live together and claims that she really wanted to do it. However, she still has things that she has to do, so she leaves him with a kiss. Jin wakes up a little later to find Toa gone, and though he tries to look for her, he can’t find her.

In the middle of this, Gio gets attacked by Widow, and Kazuki shows up to punch Jin. Since he cares more about finding Toa, Jin asks Kazuki to let him go, but this just serves to make Kazuki angrier because he considers having Gio stolen more important. Kazuki claims that he simply wants Gio – who he considers to be his possession – back. He notes that Jin has changed since the day of the shuttle accident, but Jin doesn’t care about any of this, including Kazuki hitting him. Jin just wants Kazuki to let him go look for Toa because he wants to see her. Hearing this causes Widow to remember a scene from her past where she had to be restrained while a loved one was wheeled off in a gurney, and she loosens her grip on Gio long enough for him to break free. Telling Kazuki that he’s not an object, Gio punches Kazuki in the stomach and then carries Jin off. Widow isn’t able to catch them, and Kazuki is left yelling about himself being Gio’s rightful master, not Jin.

Laina meanwhile is meeting with Yonamine Kou, and the reporter passes along information about how Garnet met with Amagi and is connected with the Spirytus incident. Yonamine knows that there’s someone who’s communicating secretly with Garnet, but he doesn’t specifically say who it is. Laina then returns to his own room and finds Toa waiting for him. She willing allows herself to the ISDA and is later being watched over by Laina’s group when Kazuki arrives to ask about capturing Gio. Laina tells him that it’s still under the Girouard military’s jurisdiction and suggests that Kazuki worry about himself because he’ll be penalized for coming out here without permission. Frustrated with this, Kazuki has Widow approach Jin and Gio to tell them that the ISDA has captured Toa. She brings them to meet with Kazuki, and Kazuki thinks that Jin won’t be able to see Toa again if she returns to Earth on the shuttle that’s being prepared right now. After hearing that the ISDA research team will use her like a laboratory animal, Jin gets on his knees to beg Kazuki for help.

Kazuki first asks how Jin feels to have someone precious taken from him and wonders if Jin understands his feelings a little now. Gio interrupts to reaffirm that he doesn’t belong to Kazuki, but Kazuki doesn’t care and wants Jin to give Gio back in return for his help getting Toa. He takes Jin’s indecision and silence to mean that he wants to go through with the deal, so Kazuki sends Widow to retrieve Toa from the ISDA shuttle. She’s easily able to do so and gets away with Toa, but when Toa finds out that Widow is taking her to Jin, she starts resisting. Widow knows that Toa wants to see Jin and even gets her to admit as much, however Toa still feels that she can’t see him. While waiting for Widow’s return, Jin tries to apologize to Gio, but Gio just wants to know if Jin can protect Toa. Jin feels that he can, and Gio takes this to also mean that he was getting in between them after all. Widow then arrives back, and Gio returns to Kazuki as part of the deal. Toa, however, still refuses to go to Jin and claims that she can’t be with him. To show him why, she tosses him the other half of the bracelet that once belonged to his sister Ai, though it now only says “To A”. Toa finally admits that it was her who collided with the shuttle and it was her that killed Jin’s family.

Dang, it’s frustrating to see anyone bow down to a jackass like Kazuki, especially since Kazuki likes to rub it in. And since Jin had to give up Gio too, I don’t see why the two of them don’t just work together to get her back themselves if they were that desperate (or at least if Jin was that desperate). There’s no need to prostrate yourself in front of that haircut. I’m glad that at least someone in the episode (Sieglinde) commented on how bad it was.

Anyway, the big “shock” this episode is that that Toa was responsible for Jin’s family’s death and got her name from the fragment of Ai’s bracelet. Of course it wasn’t too big a surprise since this has been speculated about ever since episode three. The bigger question is what Toa’s mission is and why she refers to Thanatos as “Mother.” I’m a little unsure at this point if Thanatos is evil or whatnot because the bad guys so far – Garnet and company, soon to be joined by Laina – clearly have that bad guy feel to them. But there’s a lot more of the series to go, so there’s plenty of time to develop the Thanatos aspect of the story. I just hope emo Kazuki doesn’t play a part in it.

  1. I feel kind of bad for Gio. Jin is pretty heartless towards him. I guess since I think Toa/Jin is pretty poorly done, so I don’t see his reasons for giving up on people to save her. Shocking, Kazuki is a bitter and jealous asshole.

  2. many people have already mentioned this and I am amazed that there were people out there that didn’t think of it as a FACT. I already knew that Toa was the one that caused the accident. The only one that didn’t know this was Jin and some of the cast of the show with the exeption of Toa. If Jin can forgive Toa right away, that will prove his love for her.
Man the wait for next week episode is going to be worst than the wait for this week.

It looks like Kazuki didn’t know neither from his reaction when Toa confessed she was the cause of the disaster years ago.

I thought that Jin would at least get a spine after he met Toa. It seems he is just at coward who gets support from women.

  5. Why do you think Jin is a coward? Because he doesn’t wanna fight? Right now he just wants to be with Toa, so why would he care about Gio exactly? It’s not like Gio was helping Jin because he likes Jin either. They both wanna save Toa, so it’s a little exchange. Gio doesn’t have to listen to Jin, but since it’ll fee Toa he does it anyways.

The past few eps, to get to Toa, Jin has shown a backbone just fine. So again, where does he come off as a coward?

  6. lol. The Toa/Jin thing is starting to uh… feel weak to me for some reason. :/ In the beginning, it seemed to come out of nowhere. It’s supposed to be redemption on Toa’s part? I never saw why Toa had a reason to like Jin in the beginning (no, I’m not bashing anyone–just wondering).

I don’t say Jin is a coward because he doesn’t want to fight. Rather, he was the one who said that dragons are not possessions. And here he gives Gin to Kazuki like if he were to be the master. If he has a backbone, he should just risk his life and let Gin do whatever he wants. Eventually, Gin will help him too.

  8. Now, the worst thing that can happen at the moment is for Jin to turn his back to Toa just because he knew what happened years ago; and then go back crying to Toa begging her for forgiveness and with an old cliche that he loves her.

  9. Finally something that actually was a sort-of “surprise” in the series…. though I guess I should’ve realized it from the hints they’ve shown so far in the series, now I’m curious to as what Jin will do now that he has found out that Toa was the one who caused the shuttle accident and killed his family… Also to regarding Jin as being a “coward”… In terms of him being a capable “heroic character”… There is little he can do as portrayed by his character, in the series they’re portraying him for the most part as an average teenager (with depression) who has no training (military, survival, weapons, etc.) what-so-ever in the series… So all the actions he’s taken so far are “realistic” in a matter of speaking in what an ordinary person may “do” (as far as in the series goes)… However, this does frustrate many viewers due to the fact that he has very little capability of doing anything “heroic” yet as he is the main protagonist in the series along with Toa, and Gio taking up secondary protagonist… I do however think that his character will progress in confidence in the later part of the series causing him to make more “daring” decisions/actions because if his personality doesn’t change… That WOULD make him “spineless” and just make his character development in the series pathetic… Though they have started the “change” already, but how far they take it is still to be decided…

  10. I’m also curious to what role Widow has to play in the series and who the other two original dragons were, I’m guessing that one is dead because the show the “doc” discovering a dragon that crashed to the earth and when she touches it, it disappears into dust-light-particles (don’t know the word(s) to describe the fading of it), my guess of the third dragon would be widow… Though this is still up for debate, I hope there’s more background to widow because supposedly a dragon goes berserk without it’s dragon “master” and I’m also curious of what happened to her “partner” and what actually led her to helping Kazuki (who is still an emo-self-centered-whining-bitch).

  11. Hmm, certainly an interesting episode. That Toa was the one who crashed into the shuttle was something people were more or less expecting, but that Toa has some mission from Thanatos and such was rather unexpected. Makes one wonder exactly what her mission is as well as what Thanatos’s motives and such – and how exactly those makes it a threat/antagonist in this story. I didn’t expect the revelation to come yet too. I figured it’d be revealed somewhere around episode 12-16… Oh, and having learnt that THAT’s from where Toa’s name came was a surpise as well!

As far as his “deal” with Kakuzi went, I think people shouldn’t blame Jin too much. It was, IMHO, one of those “impossible choices”.
I’m curious as to how the situation will go on from here and on though – as well as how exactly the situation between Jin & Toa will resolve itself.
