Summary:

Having arrived in space, Kazuki tells Jin that, although he doesn’t know what will happen from now on, Jin has to come back. Jin agrees to this and vows to return to Earth with Toa. Meanwhile, Sieglinde has taken control of the Aegis System, and Raina fires it towards Thanatos at 27% output. The reason for this is because they’re not using it to attack Thanatos, but rather as a communication tool. They don’t know if this will work and if their words will get through, so they’re counting on the fact that there is a dragon in Thanatos who has done a Resonance with a human. To their surprise, firing the Aegis causes a bright light to surround them, and it also envelops Jin’s shuttle. Kazuki and Jin thus find themselves reunited with the rest of the Dragonauts in a world that consists of open fields and blue skies. Akira and Machina appear right as Jin figures out that they must be inside Thanatos, and the way the two talk makes the Dragonauts realize that these aren’t the Akira and Machina that they knew. Machina explains that Thanatos is an aggregate of consciousnesses and that she and Akira are only a part of that.

Given the chance to speak, Raina asks Thanatos to stop meddling with Earth any further. When Akira questions why, Sieglinde gets angry because the negative impact of Thanatos on Earth is obvious to her and because she thinks that Akira and Machina should understand since they once fought together with her. Machina, however, points out that she and Akira are no longer the Dragonauts’ comrades. Raina is okay with this and is still willing to work with Thanatos to recover the dragon eggs, but Akira states that the contaminated eggs don’t matter anymore. She and Machina claim that humans are a foolish race, and they don’t need the dragons that do Resonances with such a race. And since Thanatos doesn’t want dragons to be contaminated any further, it has decided to destroy the source of contamination – humans. Akira and Machina eventually cut the conversation short and send everyone except for Jin back to the shuttle. Jin is actually met by Gio and led to Toa instead. However, this is only a shell of Toa’s dragon form, and Jin can’t see or communicate with her human form inside.

When Jin confronts Gio about Toa being saved, Gio asserts that Toa is alive and can live forever by becoming one with Thanatos. Jin regrets letting Toa become like this and, as Jin is on his knees, Gio tries to kill him. Fortunately, Jin notices and manages to get out of the way in time. Gio explains that he’s trying to liberate Jin’s consciousness from his body so that Jin can also fuse with Thanatos, and this will allow Jin to be freed from time and space so that he can spend eternity with Toa. Despite this, Jin continues to dodge Gio’s attacks because he understands that becoming one with Thanatos means that both he and Toa will lose their own selves. He tries to remind Gio of the time the three of them lived together happily, and he cites as an example of their individuality how they all reacted differently to Gio’s cooking. Gio understands this, but he also points to how there’s no other way to keep Toa alive. From within her dragon form, Toa tries futilely to tell Gio that they don’t want something like that. It is at this point that Asim and Garnet appear beside her, and Asim questions if this means she doesn’t need eternal life. Toa asserts that she doesn’t and claims that, even if it’s for only a moment, she wants to be with Jin.

Asim and Garnet try to entice Toa with the prospect of being together with Jin for eternity, but Toa feels that death isn’t something to be afraid of. Because people die, every moment shines when they’re with the person they love – this is what she learned from coming to Earth and doing a Resonance with Jin. When Asim wonders if she means that death is wonderful, Toa clarifies that it is living that is wonderful, but Garnet points out that Gio doesn’t feel that way. Outside Toa’s body, Gio is now explaining to Jin that the three original dragons were sent to check on the eggs and should have returned without doing Resonances. Jin thinks that the accident and subsequent Resonances made Thanatos angry, but Gio reveals that Toa and the other original dragons were merely like lost hair for Thanatos, so it didn’t care what happened to them. Back inside Toa, Asim points to this as the reason that Gio asked Thanatos to fuse with Toa again in exchange for him becoming Thanatos’ successor. Jin meanwhile again refuses Gio telling him to fuse with Thanatos, and he says that he wants to see Toa, even if it’s just for a moment.

Toa feels the same way as Jin, but Asim then informs her that her fusing with Thanatos has begun. She starts to get pulled away, however her feelings, which are in sync with Jin’s, cause a special reaction that reunites them in a blinding flash of light. Seeing Jin and Toa kiss and vow to be together until the end, Asim and the others are intrigued and announce that Thanatos has decided not to destroy humanity. Instead, Thanatos now wants to fuse with all of mankind. The chamber they’re in then starts shaking, and Gio realizes that Thanatos is waking up. He allows Jin and Toa to board his dragon form so that they can escape from what is a massive uncoiling dragon. Back on the shuttle, the Dragonauts are in awe of what’s happening and detect that tons of Ostrums are launching from Thanatos towards Earth. The Dragonauts thus decide to mobilize and leave the Avenir in the care of Kazuki. Back on Earth, Nozaki apologizes to Yuuri and heads off in his dragon form. Jin meanwhile decides that he still has something he wants to say to Thanatos, and so Gio flies towards the huge dragon.

Well this episode doesn’t make me want to bang my head into a wall like last week did, so I guess that’s some improvement. Still, I could barely stand to watch any of the scenes Kazuki was in. All he cares about is Jin, and while that’s technically no different from before, Kazuki no longer wants revenge and is a good guy now, thus making their relationship a lot more disturbing. I could also point to the fact that Jin and Toa were basically reunited thanks to the power of love, but at least I can stomach that stuff.

Anyway, I’ve got little to no hope for the ending being any good. Thanatos’ plan will almost certainly be thwarted, and I get the feeling that Jin and Toa will sacrifice themselves to make everything right. To show that the two will be together forever, the director could even use a final shot similar to that from the end of Romeo X Juliet. And, if for no other reason than to spite me, Kazuki will likely live to tell the tale. I would love to be proven wrong and have the ending turn out to be awesome, but that’s an even less likely possibility than rainbows and a defeat-a-giant-army-with-a-song scene that would make this an even bigger train wreck than it already has been.

  1. My hopes for this show were crushed because Kazuki’s still alive. Wtf, GONZO?

As for another E7 ending, I think I may just want to bang my head against the wall. (Don’t get me wrong though, I love E7. Not this.)

  2. This show was good for most of the series and had lots of potential. But somewhere along the way the makers made some real stupid decisions and it ruined what could HAVE BEEN a great anime. The biggest bonehead move was having Kazuki do a face turn in the 11th hour after so many episodes with him as the villian you love to hate. All was forgiven in like 30 seconds? WTF is up with that? You dont turn a villian like that into a good guy at the end. You turn a honorable villian anti hero type into a face, not a emo weasaly bitch like Kazuki.

  3. One thing that bothers me quite a bit, which became even more apparent after watching this episode, is that the acting in Dragonaut is good (i.e. believable), but the turn of events is absolutely absurd at times. What a waste of a very good cast. 本当に勿体ないよ。

With that said, the Honey and Clover drama ended yesterday (11 eps) and after comparing the end scene to the anime version, I have to say they really did the series justice overall. Since you’ve already seen the anime Omni, I’m sure you’d probably appreciate the drama a bit. I mean hey, it’s better than watching Dragonaut that’s for sure!

As for Dragonaut, yes, we need lots of rainbows. RAINBOWS! If nothing else, I want a good laugh at the end!

  4. Why the hell am I even downloading this crap?… Oh yea, Toa. And Sieglinde’s sixth finger. but thats the all i like about this series. Really, why has gonzo pushed this to the crapper?

  5. Lucky that next week is the last episode or not i cant bare more of Kazuki’s moment as a good guy with all his naive type of talking, it’s painful (your mind keeps on telling you ‘you dont Kazuki just die already’). I wonder why Toa is using Gio’s sword in the preview.

It would be interesting if Kazuki actually betrays Jin and kills him causing Toa and Gio to go insane. And then Toa kills Kazuki causing Gio to go insane because of the resonance thing he did with Kazuki in the beginning. Then Gio explodes destroying EARTH! YEA and Thantos will be like wTF m8? No whatever they do i dont thing they can revive the anime!

yah…I wasted my time watching this anime….but when i think about upcoming april i just cant help it but get extremly excited…so many great animes are waiting for us

Only good thing I’m looking forward to is Macross Frontier. Considering what an overhyped pos Code Geass was, no interest in R2. Druaga is the next Gonzo anime…sides that there is nothing else.
