April means that another new season is upon us, and like the past fall season, it’s chock full of premieres, including some big names like CODE GEASS and Macross. With the exception of a few shows, I was relatively disappointed with the past winter season, so hopefully this one will be better. As usual, I’ll watch the first episode of most shows within certain parameters (in other words, not the kiddie shows), and what I list here are the chances of me actually blogging something based on my initial impressions from promotional material. However, even if I list the chances for a show as good or guaranteed, it doesn’t necessarily mean I’ll stick with it for more than a few episodes.

By no means does this list reflect every single anime series that is going to be aired, though I did try to be as comprehensive as I could. Check out MOON PHASE for an entire listing, syoboi’s calendar for specific air-times, and Fansub Wiki’s Spring 2008 page for who’s tentatively subbing what.

Technical Note: All times are given in a 24-hour, relative-day format where times are extended to show which day they belong to. For instance, Friday morning at 1:30AM would become Thursday at 25:30 to show that the episode aired late Thursday night.

Allison & Lillia

Premieres April 3rd, 2008
Airtime in Japan (JST, GMT+9): Thursdays at 23:32
Airtime in U.S. (EST, GMT-4): Thursdays at 10:32
Information Links: ANN Encyclopedia, AnimeNfo, AniDB, syoboi
Based on the novels by the author of Kino no Tabi, Allison & Lillia is a series that will take place in two halves. The first half is set in a 1940s era world where a war has been raging for a long time, and the main character Allison is an air force pilot. She and her childhood friend set out to find some treasure that can end the war, and apparently they succeed because the second half of the series features their daughter Lillia and her boyfriend in a post-war environment. This is a Madhouse series being broadcast on NHK, so it’s hard not to be reminded of Dennou Coil, but this has a different production crew working on it and has a completely different feel. The characters here look interesting enough, but this is airing on a Thursday, so it’s in competition with a lot of other series, and I wasn’t particularly impressed by the promo video. Mizuki Nana fans might also want to take note because she plays Allison here.

There are two shows in this upcoming season that I’m absolutely positive I’m going to blog, and Macross F is one of them. I couldn’t say enough good things about the first episode when it premiered at the end of last year due to its incredible production quality, and if the rest of the series is anywhere near that good, I’ll be a very happy camper. If you haven’t yet seen the first episode, I highly, highly recommend you go find it and watch it.

xxxHOLiC continues the supernatural story of the high school boy Watanuki and the dimensional witch Yuuko, and like the first series, it’ll probably be without any Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle crossover references. I’m actually rather conflicted about this series because though I’ve enjoyed the manga, I lost interest in the first anime series partway through, and while I really liked the work Production I.G did on the Tsubasa OVAs, it’s unlikely that kind of quality will carry over to this television series. I may end up watching the first episode just to hear the OP by Suga Shikao and the ED by SEAMO.

To LOVE-Ru is a series that’s about a boy who one day meets an alien princess that falls in love with him. And then fanservice ensues. And then some more fanservice. And if you’re reading the tankoubon instead of the weekly chapters, there’s explicit nudity. What I’ve read of the manga makes me think that there’ll be little to no substance to this series and that it’ll just be one fanservice episode after another. There’s technically nothing wrong with that, but it isn’t really the kind of show I want to be following week after week. In fact, if I were really looking to follow a pure fanservice show, then I’d probably choose Kanokon (see below) instead. Still, at least the animation quality in the promo videos doesn’t look too bad.

This series involves a boy (his last name is the title of this series) whose job it is to handle cases of trouble, and one day he meets a very young girl from a rich background who needs protecting. It is a somewhat dark looking show coming from the same cast and crew that did Red Garden, but to be honest, nothing about it really stands out for me. And given my predisposition against potentially bratty kid characters, I’m not sure how much I’d like this.

Gonzo’s big series for the spring is a joint MMORPG and anime project that continues the fantasy Tower of Druaga franchise. The fact that there’s an MMORPG being produced along with this anime is a big enough red flag in my book, but seeing that Gonzo is behind it makes me want to just completely ignore it given all the subpar series they’ve put out lately. However, the saving grace here is that the staff working on this show isn’t the typical Gonzo group. In fact, Gatou Shouji, the author of the Full Metal Panic! novels, is writing the screenplay for this, and he’ll be reunited with Chigura Kouichi who directed both the first FMP! anime and the acclaimed Last Exile series. The description of the story on the official site (ANN has a translation) sounds like typical fantasy fare, and the various promotional videos don’t do much to change that notion, though they did have some rather powerful RPG-sounding music courtesy of Final Fantasy XII composer Sakimoto Hitoshi. Druaga is also interesting because Gonzo is trying something different by offering free streaming video and official subtitles, available on the same day as the Japanese broadcast, via YouTube, Crunchyroll, and BOST TV. For me, that in itself might be worth checking out just to see what their translations are like.

Mizuki Nana’s other leading role this season is as the protagonist of Itazura na Kiss, a popular shoujo manga that ran during the 1990s until the mangaka suddenly died in an accident. The story is about a normal girl who has an unrequited love for a popular and handsome guy, and after her house collapses, she moves in with him because their fathers are old friends. Given the relatively poor luck I’ve had with anime adaptations of shoujo manga (with the exception of Ouran), there’s a pretty good chance I’ll skip this entirely, especially after I tried reading the first volume and got kind of bored of it.

Based on a manga, Amatsuki is about a boy who is visiting a high-tech museum of Edo during the Bakumatsu when he gets attacked by a monster and is sent to the actual time period. By coincidence, he meets a classmate who had also been sent there but had arrived two years earlier, and the story follows their adventures. I thought one of the manga’s strongest points was its artwork, and so the character designs for this anime adaptation aren’t that appealing to me, but the story here (which doesn’t take place entirely in the Edo period world) is interesting enough for me to want to watch this. Plus there’s some strong voice talent featured here (Paku Romi, Fukuyama Jun), and I liked the music that was in the promo video.

One of the two series this spring season featuring fox girls, Kanokon is about a weak-looking boy who transfers into a city high school from the countryside and, on his first day, he’s approached by a beautiful, big-breasted girl who’s fallen in love with him and is actually a fox demon. I put emphasis on big-breasted because every single description of her I’ve read includes some variation of that, and I think it should give you a good idea of what this series is really about. If you’re still unsure, just check out what the artwork on the official website changes into if you wait long enough, or see these magazine scans. The rest of the cast is made up of various other types of youkai, including a female wolf one who also falls in love with the main character. I don’t really have high hopes for this show because I see it as simply an outlet for fanservice, but there are enough big name voice actors working on this series (including Noto Mamiko and one of my favorites, Kawasumi Ayako) that I may have to watch the first episode.

Having aired one season already last fall, Da Capo II is back with another one this spring. And whereas the first was focused on Koko and Minatsu, this continuation looks to be about Otome and Yume, and the official website hints at some ultimate miracle. However, after the disappointment that was the first DC II series, I’m not really sure if I want to sit through another one – the series has lost a lot of its appeal. For that reason and because there are some other potentially interesting Saturday shows airing, I’m not going to immediately commit to following this series like I might have in the past.

Kamen no Maid Guy may be the single title I’ve been waiting the longest to see animated (nearly three years now). The story involves a normal girl who’s half a year away from turning 18 and thus getting the right to inherit her grandfather’s massive fortune. To protect her, her grandfather assigns her a shark-toothed warrior maid (to quote Dom, “a superpowered weirdo in a maid suit who doesn’t know the meaning of restraint”), and hilarity ensues. It’s a very fun manga to read with the scenario being similar to the funnier parts of Full Metal Panic!, and I’m hoping the anime adaptation can capture the style of humor that makes it so great.

Blassreiter is about a German city where corpses are being resurrected and turned into grotesque figures that attack people. In this same city, however, some living people appear who also have the ability to turn into these grotesque figures, and these people have to fight in a battle royale of sorts, all while their power eats away at their minds. This is another Gonzo series, but unlike the Tower of Drauga anime, I have a hard time finding something redeeming about Blassreiter. The CG in all of the promotional videos reminds me too much of Dragonaut, and there’s really nothing about it that makes me want to watch it. It should be noted though, that BLASSREITER is getting the same streaming and subtitle treatment that I mentioned above for Druaga.

Hayate no Gotoku! may be ending for the time being, but animation studio SynergySP and director Kawaguchi Keiichirou are continuing in the same Sunday morning timeslot with their next series, Zettai Karen Children. It takes place in the not-so-distant future where tons of people have ESP abilities, and it focuses on a trio of powerful 10-year old girls who have attitude problems and work for the government to stop criminals. Hirano Aya fans should take note that she’s on the cast and voices the spunkiest of the three girls. What I’ve read of the manga didn’t make the story seem all that special though, so it’s likely that this will go ignored in the sea of new shows.

This is the other anime this season featuring fox girls, and here, it’s a Tenko (a kitsune that’s lived at least 1000 years) voiced by the talented Yukana. The catch is that this Tenko has been alive so long that it doesn’t remember whether it’s male or female, so it can be either gender when it changes into its human form (its male form is voiced by Nakamura Yuuichi). It’s an interesting concept (Ranma-esque even), but it remains to be seen if the actual story, which involves the Tenko being unsealed and called on to protect a young boy who’s being targeted by evil spirits, is any good since I haven’t gotten a chance to read the novels this is based on. This will be taking Rental Magica’s timeslot and is animated by the same studio, ZEXCS, so if you liked the style of that, you might like this. As for me, I might give this a watch, but a couple of other Sunday shows have priority.

One of those Sundays shows is Nabari no Ou, a story about a boy who has a very indifferent attitude and becomes involved in the world of ninjas thanks to the fact that he carries a legendary power inside of him. I know that might sound generic, but it’s hard to explain without delving deeper into the all the ninja terminology involved. The manga is pretty interesting, and the promotional video for the anime made it look promising. It’s also noteworthy that is a J.C.STAFF production that once again features the Kugimiya Rie (voicing the male lead) and Hino Satoshi (voicing one of the ninja friends) combination, so if you liked them in Shana or Zero no Tsukaima, you might like them here too.

Special A is about a group of high schoolers who are the most successful out of all the students at their school. It focuses on the girl who’s ranked number two and how she continually challenges the boy who’s ranked number one in pretty much anything she can think of. The story’s setting and sense of humor reminds me a lot of Ouran, and I really wish that BONES was animating this, but instead, it’s being done by Gonzo (and AIC). That’s not to say that Gonzo can’t do a good job, but as I mentioned above, my faith in them right now is at an all-time low. On the plus side though, Fukuyama Jun is voicing the aforementioned male lead, and he appears to be using his serious Lelouch/Zero voice. Gotou Yuuko is also in this as the main character, but it has taken some getting used to the voice she’s using here (as heard in the promo videos), so I’m not sure that’s necessarily a good thing. The prebroadcast special that aired a couple of days ago gave me a decent good idea of how this show will be, and though I wasn’t really impressed by it, I’ll probably still watch the first episode because I enjoyed the manga story so much.

The Angelique franchise is getting another series, and this latest one has the title character and her bishie friends fighting demons called Thanatos (just saying that word gives me bad memories of Dragonaut). Soul Eater is a fun series about a group of Shinigami students who are after 99 human souls and 1 witch soul so that they can change their partner weapons into Death Scythes. I was a little surprised when it was announced that BONES would be animating this because the manga has a very distinct style that can be a bit crude at times, so I had a hard time imagining this being done by almost the exact same team that did Ouran (in fact, both Sakamoto Maaya and Miyano Mamoru are voicing characters here too). Still, having that BONES team work on this can’t be a bad thing. The added gimmick here is that there are two versions of this series airing every week: a regular 6PM version and a late night version that’ll supposedly have additional stuff. However, the late night version doesn’t air until three days after the regular version does, so if I do end up blogging this, I’d probably be following the regular one.

Itazura na Kiss may not be a shoujo series that I’ll watch, but Vampire Knight certainly is. It takes place in a school where there is a Day class and a Night class, and the two need to be kept separate because the former is made up of humans while the latter is made up of vampires. The heroine is one of the few humans that knows that secret, and of the two male leads, one is a human who hates vampires and the other is a vampire who saved the heroine’s life when she was little. It’s more interesting than I might make it sound, and I’d watch this just for the story. As an added bonus though, this has a pretty strong vocal cast too with the likes of Horie Yui, Miyano Mamoru, and Fukuyama Jun.

As the name might suggest, this series focuses on two sides of the world: the normal one and the shadow one. The unsuspecting main character gets dragged into all this when he meets a mysterious man dressed in black, and after a series of events, he’s forced to become a shadow being. The premise sounds interesting enough, however when I tried reading the manga, I lost interest in the second chapter. Although there are some interesting characters, the monsters are rather generic looking, and I had some issues with the story’s pacing. That may not be a problem in the anime, but there’s still not much motivating me to watch this.

It takes place in a future where people’s consciousnesses can be connected through infrastructure called the Network, but since this was insecure, a more secure network was built. The story follows a cyber diver who investigates the strange things going on inside this new network and how it affects reality. I find this noteworthy less because of the story (which has the typical Shirow Masamune deepness and complexity) and more because there are some interesting people on the staff like Blood+ director Fujisaku Junichi and Furuhashi Kazuhiro who also happens to be directing the aforementioned Amatsuki this season.

I think Crystal Blaze gets the award for most generic sounding English title this season. The amusing thing is that its official English title Glass Maiden isn’t much better (why did they need to change the name anyway?). Unfortunately, the plot comes off as feeling just as generic: it’s a detective story (officially, “a hard-boiled buddy story”) where the main character meets a girl with no memories and investigates some big incident, supposedly complete with spectacular gun battles. There’s really nothing about this that makes me want to watch it, but the sad thing is that I may end up doing so anyway because of the relative lack of new Tuesday shows.

Himitsu ~The Revelation is a show from Madhouse with the same director and character designer from the Rocket Girls series that aired last year. It’s another mystery story, but with an interesting twist: it occurs in the near future where investigators can use MRI technology to extract memories that show exactly what the brain saw, up to several years before a person’s death. The manga that this is based on can be disturbing in the dissected bodies and people committing suicide sort of way, but it also carries a deep look at the emotional and ethical ramifications of the technology and the burden on the investigators who know other people’s secrets. It was a better read than I thought it’d be, so I might give this a chance.

Madhouse is also putting out Kaiba (no, not the Yu-Gi-Oh character), a surreal looking series by director Yuasa Masaaki. The title character awakens with no memories and only a pendant with a photo of a girl, and he meets various people and regains those memories in his travels across the stars as he tries to figure out who he is. Noto Mamiko, Kuwashima Houko, and Paku Romi are all in this, but to be honest, it’s not the cast or the artistic style I’m most interested in, it’s the opening song. It’s featured in one of the promo videos and has an ethereal quality that, when paired with the animation, make me really want to watch this. Unfortunately, this is another Thursday show, so it might be hard to fit this into the schedule.

This season’s Noitamina show takes place in a Japan where laws have been passed to control the media. Opposing this is an armed library group, and the story is about one particular girl who joins them. It sounded a little dorky to me at first (talking about the forces of the library just makes me want to laugh), but the manga is pretty good , and the production quality on the anime version looks like it’ll be fairly impressive. Combine that with Inoue Marina voicing the female lead, and I might try to find room to watch this.

Let’s get this out of the way first: Junjou Romantica is a boys love (aka. yaoi) series. And it can get pretty damn explicit at times (I forced myself to read some of the manga). If that doesn’t bother you, or if it appeals to you, then you might find this to be a lighthearted and fun series with several parallel plots, one of which follows a teen who gets involved with his tutor. The anime, which is being broadcast on a surprisingly large number of TV stations, looks like it might downplay some of the BL aspects in favor of humor. It’s also noteworthy that this is being animated by Studio DEEN and has the same director and script writer as Higurashi. In any case, I’m willing to approach this with an open mind, but given that this is another Thursday show, it’s unlikely that I’ll have time for it.

Golgo 13 is a manga series that started in 1968 and has been going ever since then – volume 148 is set to be released in April. The title character is an expert assassin who has no allegiances and no morals, though he does have a personal code that he follows. The manga chronicles all the various hit jobs he does, and the anime might take a pretty episodic approach too with its 50 episodes. In that regard, this isn’t the type of series that I’d blog, but it might be one that I’ll watch every now and then if I ever get bored.

If there’s one really wacky series this season, this could be it. In Kyouran Kazoku Nikki, an incarnation of destruction was defeated by humanity, but it had left a curse before dying: its child would awaken in 1000 years and destroy the world. Approximately 1000 years later, mankind is able to use DNA testing to figure out a group of people who could be that child, but they still can’t pinpoint exactly who. What they decide to do is to put all these people together in one family with the hope that the person who is the real child would develop love for their family and would no longer want to destroy the world. The wacky part comes in when you consider some of the characters in this family: a cat-eared loli (who’s the mother figure no less), a lion, a biological weapon, and a jellyfish. That’s got dysfunctional written all over it, so I think this has the potential to be hilarious.

In addition to Zettai Karen Children, Hirano Aya is also voicing the female lead in this series, the English name of which is apparently Chiko, Heiress of the Phantom Thief (the Japanese name translates to the Daughter of 20-Faces). This accomplished thief, who steals beautiful things, takes Chiko from her family because she has a beautiful heart, and she ends up joining his gang. I’m not too keen on the character designs – Mr. 20-Faces reminds me way too much of Roger Smith and I really just don’t like the way Chiko looks – but this appears to be a fairly action-heavy series with some pretty good animation (BONES is collaborating on this), so it might be worth checking out.
Odds I’ll Blog This: Decent

The list above has the 30 major series premiering in April, and like I said at the top, it doesn’t include the kiddie shows (such as Onegai My Melody Kirara or Net Ghost Pipopa). It also doesn’t include Penguin Musume or Candy boy, which are animated shorts airing later in April and May on the Nico Nico Anime Channel. In any case, I’m very excited about this new season because there are so many series that show promise, and it’s going to be hard trying to watch them all. The one thing that I found a little odd is that, with the exception of the newest Yu-gi-oh series, there’s nothing premiering this season on Wednesdays, so I’m likely to be left with just Bleach. Fridays, on the other hand, which I’ve typically found relatively light, now have several shows to choose from. What never changes, of course, is the multitude of potentially good shows airing on Thursdays, and that’ll be the day I have to be the most careful in picking what to watch and blog.

Like I’ve done for previous seasons, I’ve uploaded a torrent with the promotional videos and commercials of many of the shows I’ve just talked about. Included in the pack – 47 files total – are: Allison & Lillia (PVx2), Amatsuki (PV), BLASSREITER (CM), Crystal Blaze (CM, PVx2), Da Capo II SS (CM), Itazura na Kiss (CM), Junjou Romantica (CM), Kaiba (PVx2), Kamen no Maid Guy (CM), Kanokon (CM, PV), Kurenai (CM, PV), Macross Frontier (CMx3), Monochrome Factor (CM, PV), Nabari no Ou (CM, PV), Neo Angelique Abyss (CM, PV), Nijuu Mensou no Musume (PV), RD Sennou Chousashitsu (PVx2), SOUL EATER (CM, PV), Special A (CM, Pre-broadcast Special), The Tower of Druaga ~the Aegis of URUK~ (PVx4), To Love-Ru (CM, PV), Vampire Knight (CM, PV), Wagaya no Oinarisama (CM, PVx2), xxxHOLiC Kei (CM), and Zettai Karen Children (CM, PV).

Note: CM = Commercial, PV = Promo, and I intentionally did not include any CODE GEASS promo material because I’m sure most of you have seen enough of it by now. If not, you can find most of those videos streamed in the R2 Primer post.

    I’ll give Golgo 13 a chance.

  2. Woot! Can’t wait. Soon, the world will be able to see just what’s going to happen with Lelouch.

Not to mention it airing in the U.S later this month, but that’s beside the point. >_>

    Lulu FTW!
  3. HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! i’m burning up!!!! “always wanted to say that”, but good lookin OMNI. u deliver the goods, and DAMN!! such meticulous research, WOW!! and i gotta agree with “SAIROU”, d-gray is getting pretty hott, but with all this new candy it really doesn’t make much sense to go back.

  4. Kanokon vs To-Love-Ru …

Kanokon have the advantage of being a light novel (not it says much, Goshuushosama Ninomiya-kun also is a light novel and … meh ) as To-Love-Ru is current ongoing manga series subjected into “yet another anime adaptation”, of course Seto no Hanayome is one and turned out very good.

Both have the advantage of being on the very late night slot so they push the envelope, on proven track record I think Kanokon have the “light novel” advantage as To-Love-Ru have the “ongoing manga adaptation” disadvantage.

  5. Despite the large amount of people that seem to be disappointed with this season (not including this blog) I seem to be getting a lot more good initial impressions for anime than I have in quite a while. The only thing it’s lacking is a KyoAni show. *pointedly stares down Haruhi design/production team*

  6. Soul Eater, The Tower of Druaga ~the Aegis of URUK~, Macross and Vampire Knight sound great! I’ll probably try and watch those x3! I wasn’t that impressed with Code Geass, but yes its definitely worth following the second season so I’d still watch that. I’m not too sure about what the Gonzo works will be like, because as you say, Dragonaut…..left me in devastation. Thanks for doing the preview again Omni, especially since you’ve been sick too! Is Gonzo really gonna sub the episodes and release it on internet for free? It sounds a bit too good…..I’m hoping the subs aren’t in terrible English.

  7. Thanks a bunch for the preview, Omni! 🙂

The ones I’m watching for sure are CODE GEASS, Special A, Vampire Knight. The ones I’ll check out are Nabari no Ou, Soul Eater, and Kyouran Kazoku Nikki.

Looks like this spring is going to be *a lot* better than what we had during winter (I only had Gundam 00 to watch .____.). 😀

  8. Well, I can’t believe you skipped Itarazuna kiss and definitely watch Vampire night or saying Special A is decent = =. The latter two shows are just an ordinary Shoujo manga which bore the heck out of me. While Itarazuna kiss while reading on and on , it is pretty impressive. But yeah if you like that “Ouran” , which is an ordinary shoujo for me also, you may have the right choice of which show you would blog ==”.

  9. In no particular order

    The big 3 for me:

    Soul Eater
    Macross Frontier
    Code Geass

    Other stuff I’ll check out:

    Nabari no Ou
    Amatsuki
    The Tower of Druaga
    Allison & Lillia
    Nijuu Mensou no Musume

    Iron Maw
  10. I can honestly say that nothing really pops out as a “must watch” series for me. I’ll probably just hang back for a few weeks and see what people say about these new shows. Thanks for the preview!

    Neo Horizon
  11. I’m definitely watching Toshokan Sensou, Code Geass, and Allison & Lilia. Thanks for the torrent– now I can narrow down my choices (I had like, seventeen other series on my maybe list and now I can make some decisions based on the trailers)

  12. its okay i guess, but only a few look really good to me…
and that sucks omni, u were forced to read a yaoi manga…wow
what if someone caught you? i’ll be watching code geass, macross
    frontier, and maybe amatsuki?

  13. This season looks epic. I remember this time last year seeing a preview of Gurren Lagann and being like eh… then as I watched the first ep it turned into OMG EPIC!

Looking forward to Code Geass, xxxHOLiC, Vampire Knight, and Soul Eater.

    camon
  14. OMNI you are doing just like as I do in new seasons…download every episode from all the series watch till episode 6 and takes the conclusion to continue or not….as practicaly I keep watching everything until the end….SABISHI NA WATASHI NO JINSEN!!!

    DEMO TOTTEMO TANOSHI DESU!!!

:D( I think i´ll never post my outcome review comments from the past season series because it takes too much time besides aside from gundam00, the comedy ones from usual, the ” NEVER ENDING ETERNAL ” shounen actions and the harem ones….nothing OMG to talk about….just gundam00 was amazing and that´s all!! )
I think I am watching SOOOOO MAAAANNNYYYY animes that I am starting to guess who are the bad guys , what they want, what´s going to happen, who loves who and who keeps up with till the end…and who dies…..COME ON JAANESE ANIME WRITERS I KNOW YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS ” CLICHE SICKNESS ” IMPRESS ME!!!
I bet you got bored this past season for sure OMNI!!
    😀

  15. Yay! Spring preview!! Thanks Omni!

    I hope you’ll blog Vampire Knight…

I wonder what’s the new anime for the Doroku (Sat 6PM) slot in place of Gundam 00, since I don’t see it listed. I also remember seeing a new anime called Real Drive and thought the artwork was cool, but it’s not listed here.

What I’m really looking forward to is only Code Geass R2 and Vampire Knight, I’ll follow Macross from here (I have no idea why I downloaded the first episode and got bored within 2 minutes and watched the rest skipping at intervals and still wasn’t impressed…)
And there’s a lot of series that I intend on stocking them up to watch monthly or something.

Fukuyama Jun is in like tons of series this season.. I wonder how he can cope, when Lelouch is probably the hardest character to voice I’ve even seen so far. I am going to watch all the series that he’s casting in! Where’s Souchirou Hoshi and Ishida Akira in a lead role?? All I see is Hoshi with a small role in Vampire Knight.

    Yukiruchan
  16. woot! thanks for spring 2008 anime list! 😀
    man! nice shows!
i’ll be watching these for sure!
    -Code Geass R2
    -Macross Frontier
    -xxxHOLic kei
    -Soul Eater

i’m not sure if i can watch these animes but let see if 1st episode can change my mind
    -Tower of Druga
    -Special A
    -Nabari no Ou
    -Kamen no Maid Guy
    -Vampire Knight

i hope you’ll blog my soul eater since the manga is totally hilarious! 😀
anyways thanks and more power to ya! 😉

    k0na-yume
  17. For me, it’s Macross Frontier, Code GEASS, Kamen no Maid Guy and Kyouran Kazoku Nikki for sure. As for the others…. Amatsuki, Nabari no Ou coz I like te mangas….. maybe Soul Eater as well, although the manga is a bit childish….. Himitsu (Top Secret) ~The Revelation is done by MadHouse, so I may catch that as well…. perhaps Kanokon.

Vampire Knight is a definite NO for me…. I hate the manga with it’s weak/eternally depressed characters an pansy designs for the males, but it’s shoujo after all and chicks dig sissy-like guys, I guess.

Yeah…. Dragonaut was horrid (Celine Dion Power of Love CRAP)…. I’ll approach the Gonzo offerings with utmost caution.

The Kure-Nai manga is actually pretty decent, and the little child ain’t as bratty as you think, so I’ll definately watch the first few episodes.

RD Sennou Chousashitsu…. Shirow Masamune + Production I.G have delivered in the past, so the first few episodes will get some download hits from me for sure.

xxxHolic and to~Love~ru…. I’ll stick to the manga.

There’s also a show called Michiko &(to) Hatchin about a female escaped con and a little kid…. Not much info…. but it’s by Manglobe Inc and the promo traier was pretty cool/artsy.

Will probably catch a few other’s…. I’m currently really into foxy chicks after Horo & Dummy so maybe I’ll give Wagaya no Oinarisama a try. I loved Kino, so I’ll be looking forward to Allison & Lillia too.

With the exception of Vampire Kinght (soo cheesy….uugh!), it looks like a decent Spring 08.

    Cheerz!

As for now, I’m gonna start watching Gundam 00, the Darker than Black DVD special episode, the last 2 eps of Minami-ke Okawari and the first ep of Bus Gamer…..heh.

P.S…. in case I forgot to mention it, Vamp Knight is PURE SHIT!! Hah!

    Lithium17
  18. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention…. For those of you who like vampire type stories, try the Blood Alone manga. Definitely one of the best…. unlike vampire ‘barf’ knight.

    Lithium17
  19. Well, besides Code Geass, there are quite a few I’m interested in, including Vampire Knight, Real Drive, Nabari, xxxHolic, (not in any special order) and maybe Monochrome Factor….
I haven’t seen any Macross series, so maybe I’ll try to start it sometime….this year.

Oh, and did you really have to use Suzaku as the face of Geass R2? >.

    Final
  20. Oh yeah…I forgot to mention Special A too. The characters in that series seem interesting, especially the male lead, and some of the side characters. I’m really interested in how they would end that anime.

    Final
  21. ill watch every new anime available in the net. Its useless to say that you watch this certain kind of anime if that anime is not available. I love anime and I will watch any kind of anime available.

    kencute321
  22. There to many new anime to try watching -_-. Macross Frontier, To Love-Ru (I liked the manga personally), The Tower of Druaga ~the Aegis of URUK~, Amatsuki, Kamen no Maid Guy, Code Gease R2, Nabari no Ou, Special A, Vampire Knight, and Soul Eater.

Crap, thats 10 + The other few i’m watching and still haven’t ended. And if there some shows that end up potentially good, then crap……………. -_-. A jump from 5 good shows to 10+ possibly good shows. Frick is all I have to say to that. O by the way, there’s a manga adaptation to Kanokon that started a few months back I think.

    Sora no Kaze
  23. And now that I just realized, Alot of them are on the same day -_- ahh damn. There a whole lot of manga-anime adaptation love thats been happening this spring. DAMN YOU PRODUCERS FOR PUTTING OUT GOOD STUFF ALL AT THE SAME TIME!

    Sora no Kaze
  24. I for sure will watch:
    Blassreiter (looks quite interesting.)
Code Geass R2 (no need to even explain)
Macross Frontier (loved the first ep.)
xxxholic Kei (animation qwuality tripled. Ohkawa has influence over the script and lots of other pluses for it.
Himitsu (Top Secret) ~The Revelation (strange and interesting, it seems)

    Will try:
    Druaga
    Allison & Lillia
    Kamen no Maid Guy

    Unknown Voice
  25. Hi, I for 1 is looking forward to Wagaya no Oinarisama. The novels has an above average story til bk 6 at least(there are hints of more interesting stuff undisclosed yet though), some nice actions (fighting with magic etc) , some nice doses of commedy but what really shines for me are the different characters and their interaction with each other(contributing to commedy and the heartwarming areas of the show).

Of course the anime could always mess up and ANN shows it as 13 episodes only….

    sairx
  26. Omni hope u feel better already ^_^
thanks for the spring season list
code geass is a must watch for me
Hope that u will blog vampire knight and Special A
i was so happy when i heard that it is been animated.. hehe.. been reading the manga since book one

    shiro-chan
  27. That’s a hell lot of interesting series to watch. Still out of all these i’ll probably concentrate on Special A, Code Geass, Macross Frontier and Vampire Knight. Apart from that might check Monochrome Factor, Amatsuki and Soul Eater – we’l see after first episode if they’re any good.

    Void
  28. The first season of xxxholic wasn’t all that, I agree with you there. Myself, I LOVE the manga series. I’m assuming that the second season will be much better though. It’s because there should be more interesting arcs. It seems like the second series will be starting with the spider arc (which i really look forward to)

  29. Code Geass is finally here. We had to wait months for the finale of the first season then months for the second season to get here. The hype has never been higher, and Pizza Hut is likely to get alot of business this weekend.

    Blue_Mercy
  30. For me Wagaya no Oinarisama (since the Ranma concepts seems funny), Macross Frontier and Geass season II and maybe Kanokon (for the fanservice). But besides no of the shows interest me a bit. As for Vampire Knight I know the manga but don’t like it too much.
Whatever, as one of my friends said recently, anime is starting to lose imagination.
And I’m just out of the phase where I watched like 20 shows at once (nor I have the time for that now).

  31. Sheesh there seems to be nothing but fail this season.

Only Macross Frontier and xxxHolic are worth watching. And maybe Code Geass, To LOVE-Ru, and Kanokon are possibilities. All the others just seem to reak of fail!

    Hudson
  32. Thanks for taking the time to write this.

I’m definetly watching Junjou Romantica and Toshokan Sensou, and I’ll probably watch Kanokon,(the character designs…they’re ADORABLE. X_X) and Itazura na Kiss, too.

    Story
  33. Omni, are you feeling better? I hope you are
WEll if you haven’t read the vampire knight manga series, you REALLY SHOULD! It’s an amazing series, you should definetely blog vampire knight…no seriously!!! Check out the manga it’s REALLY REALLY quite good, like it’s shoujo but there’s quite a bit of action and the storyline is actually AMAZING!!!

Apart from Code GEass and Vampire Knight though, Himitsu looks really interesting, and don’t blog to-love-ru, it’s a huge disappointment even though there’s eve from blackcat! >.

    alliecat
  34. To-love-ru = ecchi harem (hope it didnt suck like the R+V adaption) – it even has a transgender it that weird Alien/Human- Harem (dont Fuck with green Haired women!)
Kanokan – well need to read the light novel but sound promising
Geass 2nd = MUST HAVE IT (better Yesterday ^^)
Vampire Knight – Another Adaption. 26 Episodes should be plenty of time. however – i fear that it will be an “anime-only” ending (screw you claymore-animators…)
RD Sennou Chousashitsu – “??Diver” – Yeah Another work von shirow – Yeah ^^
Soul Eater – funny Manga – will replace OnePiece – probably…
Special A – another Lovestory goes Adaption Love/Hate…anime only end?
Macross – well 2nd Episode for sure ^^

However – with all that “newly” Mangaadaptions… nice new stuff and even some remakes (Birdy…Birdy the might)…
Where are my Adaptions of “Mx0” and “Pretty Face” (both from Kano Yasuhiro)???

well…we get Titty Twister aka Double “D” 3 Aka Ikkitousen 3 in summer…so there still some chance to get a good winter program… zero no tsukaima 3…xxxholic 2….damn…

were watching too many anime… and thats good so!!!

    see them all not really
  35. OMG
    ITAZURA NA KISS~~
THE DRAMA IS SOOO GOOD! I wonder if the anime will have the same kind of comedic pacing as the two live adaptions? but the character design for the anime looks freakin LAME
so many shoujo titles…vampire knight is the type i hate XD Special A too, just didn’t do it for me. the female characters just don’t have that extra spunk that others (like the lead girl in INK has)

but you know i will watch at least the first episode of that angelique show, because i want to hear the tegomasu song ai ai kasa 😉

besides code geass, i’m super excited to watch Toshokan Sensou.
so many titles! i feel poorly for you omni! at least this will be better than the last two seasons, both of which bored me to no end. i would help you, if only my japanese were a bit better.
it’s pretty clear you won’t have time for dramas this season XD
too bad, the outlook is pretty damn fine.

  36. Itazura na Kiss got turned into a really popular taiwanese drama, called ‘it started with a kiss’ check it out, its actually really good, onto the second season now

    blizzak
  37. Many series to watch… I think it’s time to watch the first season of Code Geass…
    To Love-Ru and Kanokon… I love fanservice/ecchi, so I think I’ll check it out.
Macross Frontier and Vampire Princess… I’ll try these too…
Kamen no Maid and Kyouran too, the last comedy anime that I watched was Lucky Star. =]
And I’m looking forward to Negima’s OADs too.

    Maedhros
  38. yes! code geass2,my CC is back and hoit as ever *moved to tear*
btw, i have heard alot if macross but never bother to touch it.SO may anyone tell me how good is it compare to codegeass or it is similar to gundam?

    mysterious
  39. i’m a bit surprised that vampire night didn’t get the guaranteed blog cus it’s the only show in mondays that doesn’t suck. kanokon also should’ve been blog cus we need some fanservice on saturdays and i’m pretty sure omni ain’t going back for another DC for blogging that sh**.

those that got guaranteed blog r really nice like another season of code geass

    clipz
  40. Sairou: There’s no way I have time to make up all 40 or whatever episodes I’ve missed, especially not with all these new shows. I’ll just stick to the manga for DGM.

puyomon: Probably not…the beginning of May is a bad/busy time for me real-life wise, so I likely won’t be adding anything.

SeedFreedom: You really don’t need prior Macross knowledge to enjoy Macross F.

saris: Itazura na Kiss reads as a very typical shoujo work to me, and those types of titles don’t interest me nearly as much as they used to. I typically prefer shoujo series with comedy elements or action elements now.

asdf: As I said at top, I don’t guarantee blogging anything unless it’s marked Guaranteed, and there are only two series marked as such this season. I think I’ll be okay.

Yukiruchan: Doroku as we know it ended with the first Gundam 00 series. It’s now nichigo (Sundays at 5PM), and CODE GEASS R2 has that spot. Also, Real Drive is up there. It’s called RD Sennou Chousashitsu in Japanese, though I nevertheless included the English name in the description. Just search the post for “real drive”.

Lithium17: Michiko to Hatchin isn’t on this list because it’s not premiering in the Spring season. In fact, it has no airdate yet.

angelicdevil and Landaren: Bus Gamer already premiered. Did you miss Patrik’s post on it?

alliecat: Yes I am. Been drinking lots of liquids.

clipz: Vampire Knight isn’t guaranteed because Soul Eater is also on Mondays and that’s being animated by BONES to boot. I’m only going to be following one Monday show at most, and it’ll be whichever of those turns out to be better.

  41. I’m going to be checking every single serie listed here, and then decide which ones i keep, but the guaranteed ones are pretty much geass r2 and macross just like you omni lol

    chupacabra
  42. Man, everybody puts Code Geass and Frontier in their list! Of course, I do that tooo! ^^
Is Vampire Knight really that good? The 1st chapter is a little boring… Maybe I should try.
Looking forward for Nabari no Ou, Amatsuki, Kamen no Mad Guy, xxxHolic. Damn… How about my school!?!?!? T.T

  43. well, Vamp Knight is typc. Shoujo, just pretty faces and school stuff – in this special case spiced with two species conflict (normal mankind should not know that Vampires truly exist) –> therefore Day/Nightclass – and a triangle relationship between the girl and her two “friends” (vamp/vamp hunter)… well read the Manga, then u know that it might turn quickly from roses to guns, and from flower power to bloody incest…and so on – im looking foward it ;-p

To love ru: ecchi alien harem – i read the manga, too at laughed pretty good – but if its the same quality as that crappy R+V adaption u shouldnt watch it (damn those quys who turned it into a second ikkitousen – screw them- waaaaaaaaaaaaaagh)

Soul Hunter: a must watch! Funny Manga! Action Comedy and…Death ^^ Childrenfriendly (more or less)

Sekirei ? – watch the first 20 chapters of this – will propably turn into ecchi harem style…with ” Lovely Powergirls”…and had some good laughs…reminded me (ironic on )a bit of cross-over of Pokemon meets PowerRanger meets Softhentai meets Armaggedon(ironic off)…Probably give it a look though…

macross and geass: MUST SEE IT MUST SEE IT MUST SEE IT MUST SEEEEEEEEEEEEEE IT…*eyedrops someone?*

in any case – whenever its a Manga adap – go looking into the Mangas first

    Anotheronebitesthedust
  44. xxxHolic Kei Yeah!!!at last…i thought higurashi season 3 would be now aired, i guess i was wrong.Vampire knight!!!!!!I will definately watch this, i am addicted to the manga. To be honest only xxxHolic Kei and Vampire Knight caught my eye….:(

    Nicole
  45. I am NOT pretending to be Super-Cool, instead i will watch what i really enjoy: ToLOVEru, Kanakon, xxxHolic Kei, DaCapo II Second Season, Zettai Karen Children, Wagaya no Oinarisama, and probably some others, if they begin to feel fun!

  46. ROSARIO X VAMPIRE 2ND SEASON ANNOUNCED FOR OCTOBER 2008!!

” BANZAI!! BANZAI!! BANZAI!! BANZAI!! BANZAI!! ”

    ” MIZUKI NANA BANZAI!!….” MIZUGI ” NANA BANZAI!! ”

PS : as I cook perfectly someday I´ll have her taste my LIORI ( cook )!!

  47. whoa, it seem like a trustworthy review… until what you said about vampire knight and junjou romantica since they both are highly acclaimed manga. junjou romantica in particular being a one of the highly bought yaoi series. i think that desire a little bit more than poor….

    nopq
  48. ROFL nopq:

Nobody gives a shit about yaoi series in this site maybe shoujo but certainly not yaoi, if you’re such a expert why don’t you open your own blog for that yaoi seire if you love it that much

    chupacabra
  49. First I just watched Macross Frontier and it was F**king epic. Second I can not wait for the second season of Code Gease I hope it lives up the the fist season.

Aside from the fist two show I also intend to watch Kamen no Maid Guy, Kanokon, and Nabari no Ou. I hope they all live up to my expectations.

On a side note I don’t think that Macross Frontier has “Movie quality graphics.” Where as they are good they are not excepitional at all times, which for me is a minor annoyance. Other than that as I said before it is F**king Epic.

    Woden
  50. Yay! Vampire knight is coming yeah!! Vamp knight’s manga is really Nice! And so is special A I’ve read the mangas in special A (manga) it’s obvious that the main guy (Kei) likes the main girl (hikari) but she’s really dense ^_^

    Athanasia
  51. Anotheronebitesthedust: Sekirei isn’t coming until this summer.

nopq: As others have pointed out, I’m not claiming that Junjou Romantica or Vampire Knight are bad. In fact, there’s a good possibility that I’ll end up blogging Vampire Knight. Nevertheless, you have to understand that the differences in people’s tastes in anime and manga are just as different their tastes in movies or food are. Not everyone would watch a Junjou Romantica type series, just like not everyone enjoys CODE GEASS.

  52. Just saw first ep. of Kurenai, it felt good, so i add it to my watchlist. xxxHolic Kei is as good as i anticipated. What comes to Allison & Lillia, i don`t know yet, despite being a long-time historical aviation fan. Macross Frontier looks like Macross must. Then i must confess: Of animes like Code Geass, Soul Eater, Vampire Knight i feel there`s no need to mention separately. Tsuzukeru…

  53. Omni, I didn’t mean to offend your decision for blogging anyway ^^. Just wanna say that Itazura na kiss, if you just read like volume 1-2 of the manga, it’s pretty ordinary Shoujo. But if you have read all of them or at least read past volume 5 , it turns into a memorable , funny and tear-wrenching ones especially after the main couple marry each other. It ‘s the perfect example of good shoujo which the main girl really loves the main guy unconditionally and not acting like a stupid typical shoujo main girl. I say this as a Shoujo manga hardcore reader. If you compared the hilarious element in Itazurana kiss and Vampire Knight or Special A, Itazurana kiss is much more fun. Vampire Knight and Special A, to me and many friends who are shoujo manga readers are dull, plain like an unoriginal book with the interesting cover and have the very same storyline hundreds of shoujo mangas before them had. It’s the same as Ouran high school host club, which the gags in there have been used many times in other mangas before it. So it’s not the matter of whether it has joke, action element or not, if it’s plain and cannot make the reader impressive, that’s the end to it. Well, I would say the opposite if you are the newbies shoujo manga reader anyway . Hope you don’t mind I’m saying all this, I like your blogging, so it’s just funny when you batch the good one like Itazurana kiss while blogging the shallow storyline with flashy style animes like VP , SA, that’s all. But maybe I should not complain since I don’t know whether the anime will live up as good as the INK manga or not ^^.

  55. i am a little nervous (in a crazed obessed geeky sorta way! ) about CODE GEASS because when a show has a first series (or epiode if a moive) which is so AWESOME you never thought it possible theres only one thing that could happen…. Dissappointment. Im not saying that it will be dissapointing by no means (ive super hyped myself up for this for along time by having the last week dedicated to watching geass all the way through again) im jut saying that the SCOPE for dissapointment is HUGE. so large in fact it mildly frightens me when i think this show, purely because of the sheer GENIUS of the first series could fail to live up to expectations a bit like what happened with the matrix (as far as all my peers and most of the western world thought)[i thought it was awesome in an overbaked way!] or for me like what happened with G.I.T.S S.A.C 2nd gig or more recently [sort of] Gundam Seeed Destiny [how da hell can you bring Mu back????]

  56. List of shows I’m interested in for this season: Nabari No Ou and Toshokan Sensou. Runner ups that I’ll check on at some occassions: Special A, Vampire Knight, XXXHolic Kei, and Monochrome Factor (which I also thought the manga was just about ok, but I looked at the Japanese Wiki and there were some odd things revealed in those spoilers. Especially, about a few of the main characters. O.o)

  57. I just watched the 1st episode of Daughter of 20 faces. After the decent/exciting OP, I thought the show was going to be predictable and boring. Instead I’m quite happy how the episode turned out.
