「宇宙一の男」 (Uchuu Ichi no Otoko)
“The Greatest Man in the Universe”

Episode at a Glance:
After conquering a planet quicker than expected, Gid Lucione Deviluke informs Zastin that he’s going to pay a visit to Lala and meet her fiance. While he’s supposed to keep his mouth shut about this, Zastin decides to pass on this information to Rito, so that he can behave admirably under the watchful eye of the supreme ruler of the universe. With that thought in his mind, Rito feels that things will be okay if he conveys his honest feelings for Lala, but is unsure exactly what those are when he’s reminded of Haruna. To make things worse, things at school don’t put Rito in a good light as he gets wrapped up in another Saki vs Lala dispute (where Yui falls victim to some bondage), and run-ins with both Run and Konjiki no Yami.

Later on, Rito is taking out the garbage with Haruna and is almost able to confess his feelings for her, but is suddenly called to the rooftop by Mikado-sensei. There, Rito is left with a woman, who’s been watching/photographing all of his antics for the day and taken an interest in him. Just as Rito’s about to get kissed, Lala’s father appears and declares that he’s failed the test. While Rito first thinks Gid is some lost kid or Lala’s younger brother, he soon finds out otherwise and is about to get killed along with the rest of the Earth for his half-hearted attitude towards Lala. Thinking of all his friends, Rito tries to stop Gid, but Lala suddenly shows up and tells her father not to hurt him. In tears, Lala declares that Rito’s the person that she loves, so Gid decides to give Rito some time to become a man befitting of Lala—the greatest man in the universe.

Back at home, Rito is troubled by becoming the greatest man in the universe, but quickly decides to do so some way or another to prevent Gid from destroying the Earth.

Impressions:
For those that are unfamiliar with the manga (myself included), I felt this episode gave quite a few indications that Lala’s father wouldn’t have an appearance befitting his position. This kind of took away from the surprise when he showed up looking like a young Goku, but for a love-comedy series such as To LOVE-RU, it only feels right that he looks kind of silly. In any case, the story seems to have focused back on the Lala x Rito x Haruna love triangle now and I’m personally looking forward to seeing how Rito acts now with the weight of the Earth on his shoulders (literally). While I’ve enjoyed the introduction of all the female support characters thus far, the “main” love triangle is still what I’ve been wanting to see more of. The preview seems to indicate that Rito and Haruna have (finally) expressed their feelings for one another and that Lala has been left out of the loop, so hopefully things are proceeding in that direction. I guess the question is, will Rito be true to his heart and choose Haruna, casting aside the lives of everyone on Earth? *play dramatic music here*

Other than that, it was nice to see Yami again, even though it was only for a brief moment. I’ve taken quite a personal interest in Yui’s character as well (based on personality of course…), so those with a similar taste will probably appreciate the fair amount of Yui fan-service this week. I actually felt kind of bad for her since she was just stepping in to stop the Saki/Lala dispute as a member of the morals committee, but hey, a little innocent bondage (wait, is there such a thing as “innocent” bondage? o_O) still pales in comparison to some underwear down, oshiri pen pen (spanking) right? >_>

  3. this episode kinda screwed up lala’s dad’s character. in the manga he was a bit more fun and perverted, but the end result is the same i guess. still the presentation was kinda bland.

  4. I so want to see LalaxRito. Its ok to have the triangle with Haruka but eventually they need to find her another love interest or something so Lala and Rito can hook up. Also anyone else think that the blond assassin (forget her name) seems to be very similar in voice and character to other naimes? She very similar to Eve (Black Cat), the lead in Monster Princess, Sakura in Da Capo II, I love her characteras well.

  5. these guys keep putting more japanese perversion like tentacles(ep.4) and bondage(yui).

On a serious question who was the girl that hug yuuki rito. Is she an image of lala’s late mother or just an extra, because i wanna know every character that shows up in the show.

please keep blogging this until it’s finish. I hope you also blog seikerei when it comes out.

    Ah!
  6. @Splash:
Konjiki no Yami is played by Fukuen Misato, who also played Eve in Black Cat. To LOVE-Ru and Black Cat actually have a similar creator, which explains why Yami resembles Eve and why they decided to cast the same seiyuu.

    @Ah!:
If it’s the woman you’re referring to, that was simply a doll used by Lala’s father to test Rito, as mentioned in teutates’ spoiler tag above. In the credits, she’s merely listed as “woman (女)”, so I believe she’s just an extra here.

  8. Gintama episode 63 said it best when gintoki was talking about jump manga and mentioning that you know how a manga is gonna end its the ride in-between that matters.

It’s gonna be Lala x Rito its just that Haruna is one of the more likable harem character and it will break my heat to see her lose unless the manga tries something different which I doubt.

  9. I dunno, I think the best part about this show/manga is that he still hasn’t stopped liking Sairenji just because Lala throws herself at him. Of course, being someone rooting for Haruna and Rito, I expect that to be the outcome.
