「決壊の時」 (Kekkai no Toki)
“Moment of Breakdown”

Episode at a Glance:
Recalling how Yukimi always said that involving surface world people is despicable, Yoite gets pissed off when he sees him at Hana’s door looking for him and Miharu. However, Yukimi leaves as soon as he finds out that Hana is a surface world person, unbeknownst to Yoite and Miharu who had already left.

The next day, Raimei talks to Kouichi about how Kumohira didn’t return home yesterday and admits to secretly helping Miharu get the Engetsurin. Hearing this comes as no surprise to Kouichi though, as he thinks even Kumohira noticed her suspicious behaviour lately. Depressed about not being able to keep it a secret, Raimei mentions how Miharu has returned to Banten, and how he told her the other day that he’s trying to use the Shinrabanshou to help Yoite and potentially others. After asking for her help, Miharu had also told her to kill him as a Shimizu if she ever feels his intentions become bad. Reminded of this, Raimei feels that both sides might understand one another if they just talked. She’s also disappointed in her inability to secretly help Miharu, but Kouichi says the world would be a better place if people weren’t shrewd and hiding things all the time. Therefore, he insists that she stay the way she is as he likes that side of her. One inadvertent confession later, the two of them notice they’re being followed and take off running.

Yukimi catches up to them and after a minor scrum, Raimei accidently reveals that only Thobari knows where the Engetsurin is. Hearing this, Yukimi demands to know where he is, so Raimei agrees to show him. After silencing Kouichi’s opposition and apologizing for betraying him for Miharu’s sake, Raimei leaves with Yukimi even though she doesn’t actually know where Kumohira is. Shiratama then arrives and guides Kouichi to Miharu and Yoite’s secret location, where the two of them are under the impression that Yukimi’s after Hana. After surprising them, Kouichi reveals that Raimei went off with Yukimi somewhere, so Yoite decides to go look for him. Similarly, Miharu decides to look for Kumohira in order to lighten the burden he’s placed on Raimei.

After leading Yukimi to school on a day off, Raimei turns on him in an attempt to protect the Engetsurin. With the help of a fire extinguisher though, Yukimi pins Raimei down, takes her cellphone, calls Miharu, and tells her to call for help. Unbeknownst to both of them, Kumohira is actually at the school and shows up shortly after to help Raimei. Claiming he’s not a lolicon, Yukimi hands Raimei over, so Kumohira tells her to leave. On her way out, she runs into Yoite who completely ignores her. Meanwhile, Yukimi fights Kumohira and is hesitent to kill him without learning the location of the kinjutsusho; however, Yoite arrives and uses his Kira to get rid of his gun before he even has a chance to. After telling Kumohira to get away from here, Yoite approaches Yukimi saying that this doesn’t concern him and to leave, and resorts to attacking him when he refuses to do so. Shocked that Yoite is helping him, Kumohira suspects that this is because of Miharu, who later shows up with Kouichi.

Realizing he’s here, Kumohira questions Miharu what him and Yoite are after if it’s not for the Kairoushuu’s sake, but Miharu simply asks for the Engetsurin. Seeing as Kumohira won’t hand it over though, they all head up to the rooftop, where Yoite reminds Yukimi of how he said it’s pathetic to involve people from the surface world. While concerned for Yoite’s well-being, Yukimi takes off because everyone’s arrived. Miharu then takes Yoite back to Kumohira and Hana’s place, where the Kira user is haunted by nightmares of a woman (supposedly his step mother) wishing he had died. Shaken up, Yoite tells Miharu to hurry up and erase his existence. Upon seeing his decaying hands though, Miharu reminds Yukimi of how he said he didn’t want to die at Alya Academy, and how this seems to contradict his desire to disappear. With Yoite refusing to talk about it, Miharu says he wants to know why he always looks so sad and why kindness seems to make him suffer, so Yoite simply says he doesn’t want any of his bothersome deeds as a death god to remain. While Yoite claims this is part of their agreement and is why he protected Kumohira, Miharu tells him he’s not a bothersome death god and thinks of how he actually resembles himself. During this time, both are unaware that Hana overheard them from outside the room.

Pondering the situation, Kumohira wonders how Yoite is able to get through to an apathetic individual such as Miharu, and whether the Kairoushuu plan to tear the kinjutsu from Miharu or use it once they’ve gathered all the scrolls. While uncertain which it is, he feels that Miharu’s in danger either way and he has to keep him away from them, leaving only one thing for him to do. Kumohira then overhears Hana mumbling about her farsightedness, so he tells her it’s something he likes about her. Amused, Hana says she wants to visit his old village if he ever gets over his fear of vehicles. The next morning, Hana finds a bunch of Thobari’s things in the garbage and a picture of the two of them missing from a frame. Realizing he’s gone, Yoite is concerned about what to do with the Engetsurin now and elsewhere, Hattori discusses with Ichiki about the burden on Yoite and how they took him in, but how him and Miharu are eventually going to betray them. Back at Hana’s place, she sees Miharu and Yoite off and figures that Thobari will be gone for a while this time.

Impressions:
I’d say the blurring between protagonists and antagonists seen before is really starting to show now, and if we were to pick a clear antagonist, it would probably be Hattori at this point. While Yukimi and Raikou still seem loyal to their Kairoushuu leader, I’m suspecting they’ll come around for the “greater good” (whatever that may be later on). As for Yoite, going up against Yukimi is a pretty defining moment of where he stands, and while he feels indebted to Hattori and Ichiki for saving his life from an evil guardian, they don’t seem all interested in his well-being any longer. I wouldn’t be surprised at this point of they merely saved him to use him as a tool, but that’s just speculation at this point. Hopefully the next episode will reveal more about Yoite’s past though as this one didn’t.

On another note, I felt bad for Hana after Kumohira left without a word, but seeing as he took the picture of the two of them with him, I don’t think it was an easy decision for him to make. While Kumohira is stern in his resolve about Nabari world matters, he evidently cares about Hana a lot, so here’s to hoping that he doesn’t get killed despite his annoying hindrances in the past.

  1. The drawings in the Manga are much more delicate, the way the Mangaka captures expression is amazing; you’ll forgive me if I say I have never seen anything to compare in terms of beautiful characters and subtlety of expression… (goes off on tangent)

  2. @Eri, I can’t stop watching it either even though I’m a little confused with what’s going on sometimes. So Thobari’s gone into hiding now that everyone’s after the Banten scroll. I wonder how long he’s going to be on the run.

  3. kagebutsu// The anime is almost completely original material now. Episode 15 was the last episode to stay true to the manga plot-wise, and that was at the end of volume 7 of the manga. Right now 49 chapters of the manga are out and volume 9 will be out sometime in August.

Raimei~~~ She was wonderfully moe this episode.

  4. so… this is original material. I haven’t read the 8th book yet, so I don’t know how much plot the later episodes gonna share with the manga, however, I do hope that the anime would have a fine ending. Since they wrapped up the manga material quite early, they have many episodes left to set up for the anime ending.

  5. I agree with Divine’s impressions.
On the other hand, the blurring of who’s right and wrong is what makes this series so unique compared to others that are just so plain obvious.
That’s one of Nabari no Ou’s lovely traits.
Poor Yoite,I can’t comprehend how much he has had to endure.
This episode also shows just how cute Raimei x Kouichi would be.
Nonetheless,I can’t wait to watch this episode.

  6. kagebutsu:
The anime is well into the 8th volume now, which is the latest one out. Volume 9 is slated to be released soon though.

    Asa, Kaitune:
Actually, not all of this was anime original material, as some of the scenes were right out of the 8th volume.

  7. indeed after this one i couldn’t take it anymore and i went and spoiled myself with all the manga right up to chapter 49, and boy did i go orz and facepalm several times at the development………
well at least now in the manga they officially revealed Kouichi’s true form……
anime looks like an original route from now on, though i wish they keep some part of the next upcoming part from the manga.

  8. I love the episode summary. <3 I could understand some of what was going on while watching the RAWs, but not enough to make everything out.

Looks like the anime is beginning to weave its own story now, with only little fragments from the manga, but I’m enjoying it hugely. The anime hasn’t disappointed me yet, (except for just teensy bits with the exclusion/alteration of some scenes, which were more than made up for with the general awesomeness of the anime) so I’m definitely looking forward to the upcoming episodes and how the anime will deal with having to give the series an end at 26 episodes.
