「Hurry up つっこめっ!いや,つっこむな?」 (Hurry up. Tsukkome! Iya, Tsukkomu na?)
“Hurry up. Plunge In! Wait, Don’t Plunge In?”

Episode at a Glance:
After getting off the cruise liner, Lina and the others arrive at an unmarked fortress that Weiser steps out of. With him intending to arrest Lina on behalf of Ruvinagald, she tries to sell out Pokota, before the both of them get provoked into entering the fortress. Unconcerned about the obvious trap that even Gourry noticed, Lina and Pokota storm in with the others following along, where they fall for several obvious traps. Elsewhere inside the fortress, Weiser is collaborating with Xellos, Fran, and Zoran so that he can capture Lina, become famous, and impress the neighborhood woman, whereas the others are doing so to obtain the Sword of Light for Gioconda. As part of Xellos’ plan, the other three then try to exploit Lina’s inexperience with relationships and her fear of slugs amongst other things, but fail miserably because they only end up annoying her each time.

In the supposed last room, Weiser, Fran, and Zoran attempt to throw Lina off by reminding her of her hometown, parents, and siblings, the last of which has Lina running around hysterically due to her fear of her sister. In tears, Lina gives herself up, but Zelgadis and the others remind Weiser that they’re here too, after which Pokota blasts them all away. Seeing as they failed, Xellos then arrives to take things into his own hands and tells Lina that it’ll be troublesome if he doesn’t bring them in. Figuring that the reason behind why is a secret, Lina and the others end up having to go up against the ridiculously powerful Xellos and quickly get defeated. However, prior to giving up, Lina manages to tell Pokota about her plan to let themselves be captured and brought to where Gioconda is, before sending him flying out of the fortress. Relying on Pokota to help them later, Lina explains this plan to the others as they’re all being taken away.

Impressions:
For those familiar with the Slayers series, remember what happens to Lina at the mere mention of her older sister Luna being angry? If not, here’s a small refresher for you. Nothing strikes fear into our small busted, destructive heroine quite like her oneechan.

Anyway, despite my hopes of Weiser having different intentions this time around, he proved to be quite the one-dimensional character, trying to arrest Lina yet again. However, the humour was fairly good this time, with Xellos having some fun by getting Weiser, Fran, and Zoran to try and exploit some of Lina’s weaknesses. I’m a bit surprised that the super oiled up version of Weiser and the other two as slugs didn’t have any effect on her though, given how Lina’s supposed to be scared of slippery and slimy things. Also, the recurring gag of the buttons with signs saying to either press or not press was predictable, but still funny to watch since Lina and Pokota are stupid and unable to resist.

Comedy aside, we did get a small reminder of how powerful Xellos is this week, as he single-handedly took out Lina, Gourry, Amelia, and Zelgadis with absolute ease. Going up a high level Mazoku is pretty fruitless, but I still find it entertaining watching how Lina and the others will get beaten down. When I saw Xellos like this, it was a big “oh they’re so screwed” moment. In any case, this was a good setup episode for next time, since Lina allowed everyone to be captured and taken straight to Gioconda as part of her plan, which I’m surprised Xellos and the others didn’t overhear given how loud she was talking. With Pokoto free and able to help them later, it looks like he may be a bit of a trump card next time; however, Ozel seems to the one freeing everyone first for some reason.

Tidbit: Ootsuka Akio, Weiser’s seiyuu, is quite a veteran and is the (Japanese) voice actor of Solid Snake and the motion capture actor of Big Boss in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. He’s quite silly in Slayers, but can portray a much more serious character if needed.

  1. WRONG

Viva La Revolution just put up episode 07, with 08 on the way. The translation is superb, the encoding & font is the same as SS. No karaoke yet, maybe on episode 08. Told you it would only take one week before someone subs it

  2. Xelloss probably knows what they’re up to, but either doesn’t care or thinks it will be funny. He just cracks me up and I love it when his eyes are open. It got licensed already? By who?

  3. I thought linking wasn’t allowed…anyway, I’m slightly going “heh” at Lina’s party using shamanistic spells (that are NOT of the spirit category) since they have no effect on Mazoku, and Lina & co. are well aware of this since they fought Mazoku for how long now.
I’m hoping its the error of the animation studio…(at least they had Amelia using Ra Tilt, which is understandable, but a fireball at Xellos?) o.o

  4. Technically, the series isn’t licensed. FUNimation sent a cease and desist order to SS & Eclipse and told them to stop subbing it, but they haven’t announced yet if they’ve licensed it though (I’m sure they will since they have the first 3 series) Glad to see someone else picked it up though (at least until FUNimation gets to them too V_V)

This episode looks great though (as any episode with Xellos in it is) I had really hoped Wizer had moved on though from going after Lina since that whole pet-napper incident, but I guess not.

  5. Akio Otsuka usually seems to play the silly characters overall. I hear his surly voice way more than his serious stuff.

Also, his biggest serious role was probably in Black Jack. He was a total master of BJ’s voicing in that anime.

  6. I wouldn’t say it’s been licensed, merely FUNi protecting the Japanese rights of a particular company. It’d be pretty early for it to get licensed, but that certainly hasn’t stopped certain series in the past.

If it does get licensed, I’d love to see the original dub crew return <3

And yes, Xelloss once again proves why he can hand anyone their ass.

  7. A real refresher for the new viewers unaware of Xelloss’ insane level of power & pwnage. From Pokota’s reactions to all the info on past events and his ignorance of that crucial info, but that it is later explained, it strengthens my theory that Pokota is more or less an allusion to newcomers to the series and his reactions and need of info are comparable to those that a new viewer would ask or inquire.

@tau-tau: I thought it was weird too, but watching the fight again, there is something rather patronizing about Xelloss “attacks” also. As for the shamanistic spells, not all the spells used are theoretically useless (although against Xelloss, nothing short of a Ragna Blade would do any significant damage, I suppose). Zelgadis and Amelia attack with astral-plane shamanistic spells which damage mazoku (astral plane beings), such as Bram Blazer (attacks both body & spirit), Ra Tilt (ultimate spirit damaging spell and as powerful as Dragon Slave in the Astral Plane) and Goz Vu Rou (shadow that damages the target spirit, then body). Seeing that Xelloss only teases Amelia for dealing such a spell and hits rather weakly at Zelgadis, his plan should be to have Lina & gang taken to Gioconda. Lina might have realized this also.

Sorry for the long post and to all the old fans that know this by heart. Get a bit excited on anything Slayers. I’m starting up a blog, so this is good practice (for an old fart such as myself 😛 )

  8. Oh Xellos… You really know that things are getting serious when characters who normally keep their eyes closed all the time open them. It’s the same type of thing with Gin from Bleach. I’m sure there are others, but that’s the only other character I can think of off the top of my head. If only Wiser would pay attention to that rule… =.=;;

And I’ll keep an eye out for your blog kazekaeru. Your comments were informative. I can’t keep track of half the Slayers attacks…
