Summary:

A Shibusen student named Hiro who is often taken advantage of by other students has discovered Excalibur’s book and envisions himself as a hero, so he goes and retrieves the legendary sword. When Black*Star arrives at school the next day, he finds Hiro beating up on other students, and with Hiro is Excalibur. Excalibur is still his long-winded and annoying self, but Hiro can actually tolerate him and his list of 1000 things. Black*Star, however, cannot, and soon feels the urge to kill Excalibur. Both Kid and another student named Kilik want to participate as well, but none of their attacks hit, and Hiro and Excalibur defeat all three with a single move. As a result of all this, Hiro finally feels respected, and he has no trouble following Excalibur’s list of 1000 things that he has to do, such as participating in a daily 5 hour recitation and always praising Excalibur. Everything is working out great until Excalibur starts sneezing one evening. The following day, Black*Star finds Hiro back to his old self, and Hiro reveals that he took the sword back because he couldn’t stand the fact that Excalibur didn’t stop sneezing.

Preview

It’s hard to call this a filler episode because this story does appear in the manga, and in this very spot (after the Crona stuff) in fact. And for an Excalibur episode, this wasn’t so bad and included even a fun battle with Kilik, Black*Star, and Kid vs. Hiro where we finally get to see Excalibur (and for that matter, Kilik) in action. I’m also impressed that someone was able to tolerate Excalibur, but it ended fairly predictably with Hiro getting rid of the sword, due to Excalibur’s sneezing of all reasons. It’s a nice amusing intermission, but I’m eager to get back to the main story, and it looks like we will be next week.

  1. There is such a thing as filler chapters, omakes and extra’s. That doesn’t make this any less fillery.

Oh well, I’ll end up seeing this anyway, but I will probably skip through most of it. That’s what I did with the previous Excalibur episode. If he isn’t going to be useful, then I won’t watch seriously 😛

  2. Was actually a fun episode, I enjoyed it quite a bit even though before I was wishing for a story-advancing episode ^^

Wonder if the DVD version of this ep. will include the censorship logos? They didn’t seem to be covering up anything too critical

  5. Best Soul Eater episode so far! Simply amazing!!!
Man, I love Excalibur… and now I love Hiro.

SE was needing one of chapter like this. The anime is starting to become pretty annoying since the Arachne arc started… it’s just like any random shonen.

  6. Well this was an …. improvement … over the last Excalibur episode. At least it featured all the main characters. And I applaud BONES for presenting exactly what kind of guy Hiro is in just one episode, and his deafeningly HANDSOME features make me wonder why he is ever treated like he is! I’d love to meet him in person one day. One of the reasons why I love this show is how it’s never slow, always unpredictable, and the sense of comorodery amongst the students.
