Summary:

It’s time to head back to school for Touma, which means that Index will be at home all alone. He promises to do something fun with her once he returns, but Index realizes after he leaves that she doesn’t have anything for lunch. Unaware of Index’s dismay, Touma walks to school and runs into Mikoto along the way. He manages to get her all flustered by saying that he’s tired and that she’s the only one who would ask him to do such an embarrassing thing as pretending to be lovers. At the entrance of the school, he sees Komoe parking her car and learns that she’s collecting some materials on something called the AIM dispersion field. She explains that this is also known as An Involuntary Movement, and it’s the field of power that espers emit which theoretically could be detected.

Meanwhile, Tsuchimikado gets himself transported to Aleister Crowley’s place because he’s concerned about a mage who has entered the city. That person in question is Sherry Cromwell, a member of Necessarius, and Tsuchimikado worries that relations will worsen between the church and the city if she’s defeated carelessly. Tsuchimikado volunteers to do it since he’s a mage himself, but Crowley indicates that he’s planning on having Touma do it. Back at the school, Komoe tries to introduce a new transfer student, but Index shows up instead. Komoe kicks Index out and gives her some money to go home, and it turns out that the real transfer student is actually Himegami.

Rather than going home though, Index wanders around the school hungry until she comes across a vending machine. Unable to figure out how to use it, she finally gets some help from a girl with glasses who introduces herself as Kazakiri Hyouka, another transfer student. The two start chatting, and Hyouka points out that Index’s clothes stand out too much for her to stay at the school, so the two go and change. It just so happens that Touma is walking past the classroom they’re changing in and barges in on them, not realizing that what they’re doing. After suffering Index’s wrath, Touma explains that today was just the school’s opening ceremony, so he would have returned home by noon. He gets introduced to Hyouka, but the group is then found by Komoe who’s angry that Touma is skipping the opening ceremony. What’s strange is that Hyouka suddenly disappears soon after Komoe shows up.

Index ends up waiting for Touma outside of school, but she worries that he is angry and hates her. Hyouka reappears and suggests that the friends who can fight are the ones who are close, and Index’s mood improves after Touma emerges from the school building and proposes going out for lunch. Hyouka agrees to join them, but Touma needs to first withdraw some money. While he’s doing this, he’s approached by Himegami who reveals that she used to know a Kazakiri Hyouka from her old school. This Hyouka was a top student, but no one ever saw her, so Himegami did some investigating and learned that Hyouka was called Counter Stop. What’s more, Hyouka is the key to understanding something called the Imaginary Number District – Five Elements Institution, so Himegami questions why someone like her is here and warns Touma to be careful. For the time being though, Touma still takes Index and Hyouka to an underground shopping area for lunch.

Back at Touma’s school, Komoe is chatting with her colleague Yomikawa Aiho who is a member of the Anti-Skills security forces. After Yomikawa gets called away because of Anti-Skill work, Himegami brings Komoe the book she wanted and takes the chance to ask Komoe if there’s a student named Kazakiri Hyouka at their school. Meanwhile, elsewhere in the city, Sherry Cromwell is found and cornered by Kuroko because she’s an intruder, but Kuroko underestimates her opponent and almost gets crushed by a golem. She’s fortunately saved by Mikoto, however Sherry Cromwell is long gone. Cromwell has appeared in a different part of the city and writes the words “Golem Ellis” all over the place. With one clap of the hand, each instance of writing turns into an eyeball, and she sends them out in all directions.

As someone who hasn’t been paying close attention to all the terminology, I spent a lot of time looking stuff up because there’s so much introduced this episode that would have been terribly confusing otherwise. I think this is the exposition problem rearing its ugly head again. I understand that they’re trying to set things up for the rest of this (probably) final arc, but throwing out all this technobabble is far from the ideal way of doing that. Still, at least the episode managed have some cute moments for Index, Mikoto, and the other female characters (which incidentally we got four more of this week, not including Himegami). It also ended in a fairly exciting way with the fight between Kuroko and Sherry Cromwell, though even that was rather brief and probably inconsequential. Whether or not Touma gets to face Sherry Cromwell next week, I’m hoping that at least the general battle shown in the preview will be interesting.

  1. I loled when I saw Komoe-sensei in her car.

I sure hope Mikoto learns about magic and fights side by side with Touma. Her Railgun is pwnesome! If we’re lucky, maybe we’ll see her chainsword too.

  2. Hmm, “friends who fight are close”?

Touma’s quarreled most with Index and Mikoto more than anyone.

Damn, it’s hard to predict which of the two will win. Mikoto’s the “first girl” while Index is the “live in girl”. Both are ideal starting points to pursue the main character.

Index more like a sister but gets more screentime, while Mikoto is more mature and has more action time.

    TOUMA X MIKOTO!!!!!

    magnumslinger
  3. Index gets more screen time than mikoto? well maybe in the op/ed
though I suggest Touma to go for biri biri; His much more safer being with her (you can’t Disable Index’s bite attacks XD)

  4. It looks like there gonna try and wrap this season up with the end of this arch. (Hope it doesn’t end of a cliff hanger.) Theirs been some rumors floating and the net about another season, which makes seance since they still have a lot of story to cover and i highly doubt there gonna try and squeeze it in the last few episodes.

  5. @mimic lol! Actually mimic, i think touma is much safer being with index than mikoto. Touma won’t be able to stop mikoto railgun attack with his imagine breaker unless he grab her before she shot it because railgun is a projectile based weapon, not an energy based weapon. The electric is use to accelerate the projectile, in mikoto case, the coin (Unless touma’s imagine breaker can also stop bullet from gun shot, railgun is not a problem for touma). If you watch closely at the first episode, mikoto was not attacking touma with railgun directly but attacking him with electrical attack after she demonstrate the railgun to touma.

For more info on railgun search it on wikipedia.

  6. @K: Yes Touma can actually stop Mikoto’s railgun according to the mangas, where Toma can dissipate the electricity from the railgun, basically rendering it useless, as if she was just throwing a coin to him. (Though I understand that this somehow defies physics since the coin is already traveling at such high velocity, but oh well in the anime universe, physics is flexible :p ) In fact Mikoto doesn’t have any attacks that worked against Touma so far as I know.

  7. Can someone explain to me why exactly Misaka likes Touma? Any particular reason outside of being “Beat” back in episode 1? I’ve seen the manga up to Chapter 19 but I know that the Novel itself is huge.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Episode 10-14 the Misaka sisters arc, and episode 19 might shed light on this question.

But hey, the only real reason Misaka needs to like Touma is because …dun dun dun!…he’s the lead character in a borderline harem anime! 😀

All harem anime leads need to do is exist – regardless of their indecisive wussiness – and women will want them lol. And Touma is a much better as a character than many of them.

Thanks for the heads up m8. Was just wondering if there was anything beyond what was already shown in the anime.

From reading the manga I haven’t really gained a greater understanding of the two. So far it’s mimicing the anime quite well. Up to chapter 19 of the scanlations anyways.

  10. a bit of everything in this episode: humour, action, and those incomprehensible speeches. Thanks Komoe-sensei for that lecture on AOL Instant Messenger… I mean “An Involuntary Movement” (what a terrible name).

  11. They should add more Biribiri and Misaka-lolis, but oh well. I enjoyed the new characters and the new arc has kept me thinking, so I don’t have much complaints thus far. Index can just the leftovers from the fridge if she’s hungry since she can even eat Touma’s expired grossed out meal in the first episode.

    soyahoney
  12. Wow… Index’s freeloading is ridiculous. She was more worried about food than anything else, she even tresspassed school grounds. And what does she do? Bite Touma. Why can’t Kuroko arrest her for tresspassing too? LOL.

    Biri Biri owns.

  13. If she met Last Order, she won’t be attracted, since she’s younger… unless she’s a lolicon too. But that’s unlikely, since she’s into Yuri as it is.

But if she found out Last Order was the “radio tower” of the MISAKA network, I predict she will grab Last Order by the collar and yell at her to summon every single clone to her Misaka harem.

    magnumslinger
  14. @X and magnumslinger: No, Imagine Breaker cannot stop the railgun. That’s a mistake in the railgun manga. Actually it’s several mistakes, as that is the opening scene to the Index novel, and of course canonically she fired the railgun near him, but not at him in order to show it off. And furthermore, she would never fire it at him anyway.

Ultimately, despite being very powerful, Mikoto is a goody goody who always holds back her strongest attacks against human opponents. You’ll see this later on in the railgun manga as well. Touma is actually the only human who has taken some of her stronger attacks, and that’s only because she slowly built up to using them over the course of a month of fighting him, slowly increasing her attack strength as Touma continued to negate her attacks.

The reason he can stop her chain sword/whip, is because it’s held together and guided by an active magnetic field. If she were to just toss or drop things magnetically, which she’s quite capable of, then all Touma can do is dodge or get smashed, as Imagine Breaker will be useless.

  15. @Samurai Pumpkin : Mikoto has had some interest in Touma since they met roughly a month before the start of Index, though it’s only at the recent point in the story that she’s started to develop romantic feelings in particular. And it’s not until later that Show Spoiler ▼

But to get to the root of it, it’s likely related to the fact that ultimately, the two of them are quite similar people. Mikoto, like Touma, is the kind of person who for all her complaints, can’t help but stop to help another person in need. It comes up a lot in Railgun, and you’ll even see Show Spoiler ▼

This in turn parallels when Mikoto and Touma first met in June, and as she stood there being accosted by thugs (who ultimately were no threat to her of course) and she noted that even though most people walking by didn’t know that, none of them made any move to help a girl who clearly appeared to be in danger. Until suddenly Touma showed up and did just that. It starts to come together if you remember the speech Kuroko gave Touma (sadly left out of the anime) about how Mikoto has always stood alone, but how this whole time, she’s been searching out for someone to stand beside her as her equal.

    lost in place
  16. magnumslinger, there is a different between railgun and chainswordwhip. Mikoto need to constantly put her energy on the to vibrates the iron sands and make it a sword like shape. So when Touma touch it, he nullified that energy and the the chainsword turn back to its normal states, sands. But railgun is different, she use her energy to accelerates the coin to three times speed of sound (1000 m/s,I think) and the speed of bullet is 180–1500 m/s (1500 m/s is for large guns). I think the author realized about this so that is why the author never show mikoto use railgun on touma directly. If touma really can stop railgun, he would have no problem fighting with accelerator when accelerator use his power to throw the steel at touma. (Touma touch the steel. accelerator power nullify from the steel. The steel stop in midair. lol! like that gonna happen!!) So it is imposible to stop 1000 m/s coin’s shot without any damage,

    K
  17. oh yeah, I’d still go with touma being safer with Mikoto.Mikoto would never railgun someone unless that guy is a badie and Index got that books on her brain and magicians constantly hunting her :P.

    MiMiC
  18. True but i still vote for index being with touma because index reminds me of yanagi from flame of recca, a defenceless/harmless character that need a full protection the main character and discover the true abilities of his power. Besides mikoto only realized that she is in love with touma in volume 16 of the novel.

    K
  19. I agree to that, lost in place. Those parts when Touma saved Mikoto (both at their first meeting, which doesn’t really count, and when he saved her from the esper bomb) were my most favorite parts of Railgun. On both occasions, he certainly earned a lot of brownie points from Mikoto.

As for Mikoto being safer, that’s true too. And even if people were also hunting Mikoto, at least she could fight by Touma’s side. Index is just a mobile magic wiki.

And K, that makes sense. Touche…

    magnumslinger
  20. BTW K, I was talking about what you said about the chainswordwhip.

As for Index being with Touma, no. Just look at how she acts around him, she’s more like a little sister. And she never seems to have any romantic interest either.

    magnumslinger
  21. Between cute girl who is freeloading in your house and cute girl who live far away from you, which one will the love sprout faster? Just like Kannagi.

Btw, I choose index because there are so many people choose mikotoxtouma. Its challenging this way, just like 300 movie. 300 against hundred thousands of armies lol.
    THIS IS SPARTA!!!

    K
  22. Actually K, I set up a forum some time ago, and Index and Mikoto are almost on par with each other. Mikoto’s at 50% while Index is at around 45%, everyone else chose “other” (like Touma x Kaori and Touma x Komoe). So Index isn’t really an underdog.

As for the former statement, Mikoto met and Touma met earlier than Index, and Touma and Mikoto meet almost every day, despite living in different places.

    magnumslinger
  23. okaayy, lets put teh shipping wars aside

Could someone tell me who is Tschimikado really is. He said that he was a spy from necessarius. Now, this episode is telling us that Crowley knows that he is a magician yet he still became his ally. He’s even willing to fight Sherry his comrade in necessarius. So, he’s a double agent or somthing?

    MiMiC
  24. WHAT!!!? MIKOTO IS 50% AND INDEX IS 45%!!!! THAT IS A HUGE 5% DIFFERENT!!
If that results are from 2 million voters it mean I need to eliminate a hundred thousand of mikotoxtouma FC just to balanced the situation.
Dont worry Agent K is here HAHAHA!!!

    K
  25. Hmm, it just dawned to me, but Touma and Accelerator aren’t so different. I mean, they both aren’t affected by other powers, they both got headshot, treated by the same doctor, live with a loli, are deeply involved with the MISAKAs, are unlucky from birth because of their powers (just look at Accelerator’s childhood and how he has to control his powers constantly to prevent more trouble), and Show Spoiler ▼

So does this mean that Accelerator has just as much harem potential as Touma.

These are the love teams I’m rooting for actually:
    MISAKA Imouto 10032 x Touma x Mikoto
Last Order x Accelerator x Index x Stiyl

    magnumslinger
  26. I saw a picture in a light novel scan that Accelerator and Index will eventually meet. I thought it cute for some reason.

So, do you think Accelerator could be as much of a chic/babe/loli magnet as Touma?

    magnumslinger
  27. Tsuchimikado is a mystery (im nver gonna believe what that guy says again 0_o)

and wth, there gonna meet? Last order’s attitude is bearable to acc but Index!?? with the constant eating and biting……hmmm, biting….Index biting accelerator huh…..That’ll be a jaw breaking awesome scene hehehe

    MiMiC
  28. @magnumslinger
    I see, you mean:
    Last Order x Accelerator
    Accelerator x Index
    Index x Stiyl

because you combine it together, i got confused because it can also mean
    Accelerator x Stiyl OMG!

btw, Accelerator already a harem from now on because he got ten thousands of imouto plus last order

Many thanks for the insight. If only real life would allow me more time to study Japanese I could get beyond basic understanding of daily dialog and learn to actually read material outside of a very basic untranslated dialog.

Hopefully a group will translate the novel. Baka-Tsuki has been considering it. There is over 10 pages of interest on their forums.

Thanks so much for the insight. It’s stuff like what happened when Mikoto was being accosted at the diner that I really want to know and understand.

  32. Yeah, vol 13 is a whole mess of stuff happening. Honestly, if they do a second season, I bet they’ll take it to 13 instead of 12 because 12 is mostly a love comedy volume involving Mikoto and Touma’s shenanigans, even though that means the season would be more rushed than this one.

  35. totally horrible anime…. good animation…. terrible storyline. The misaka arc and the way they talked just killed the anime by a whole lot. Lots of unnecessary, pointless frames throughout the whole series

  36. The current season is almost over, and there is a very real chance that you will never get to read or see the spoiled information unless if someone completely translates the manga ( and this assumes that they cover everything )… or if you learn Japanese and read the novels yourself.
