「ガールズ・イン・ザ・ウォーター」 (Gaaruzu in za Uootaa)
“Girls in the Water”

For an episode titled “Girls in the Water”, surprisingly only half of it was devoted to swimsuits and such. As some people have already pointed out, the anime is taking its own spin on things and skipping around the manga a fair bit. This week we start with chapter 14 for the first half and jump all the way back to chapter 8 for the second, but they did a pretty good job from a continuity point of view.

While there were some subtle differences, like the inclusion of Kotone and Akari at the pool and Chizuru’s transition scenes, the rest of the material was right out of the manga. Going back six chapters may seem weird at first, but the fairly self-contained chapters don’t actually make it that difficult. Here, things revolved primarily around Kanako, who was taking care of Junpei after he caught a cold at the pool. The anime adaptation took some liberties and changed how Junpei caught the cold, but I didn’t mind since it allowed the episode to progress logistically while focusing on Kanako. They’ve played up the brash side of her character a lot more than the lovestruck one (the tsuntsun over the deredere), so I was happy to see her finally get some time alone with Junpei.

In fact, she even managed to get his hormone juices flowing while helping him with a lost stray cat, and almost kissed him after he passed out too. However, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for Kanako when she stopped herself after recalling how Junpei coldly asked why it had to be her visiting him (and not Kaede). I mean she came all this way to take care of him and cooked him congee. When a girl goes out of her way to do that, he can at least show some appreciation before Nyamsus tells him to and gets him to text message her. I may not have clearly stated so before, but I like Kanako because I have a soft spot for tsunderes in general. Other than that, I felt the anime’s way of smoothly bringing up the friendship doll mentioned back in episode two was a nice touch, as Kanako was looking around Junpei’s room for it. She didn’t end up finding it, but I appreciate how they’re trying to tie everything together in some way. I find it’s not something you see a lot of in heavily comedic-focused series.

As I mentioned above, the Kirishima twins weren’t supposed to be at Haruhiko’s pool “study session”, but I love them so I’m glad they were there. They added a bit of comedic flair without upsetting the story one bit, so there was really no downside to this change. Junpei still managed to help a stray cat get out of the facility and Kanako/Nagi still had some good fighting over breast sizes. The fat cat in the latter half Chatora, who complained about having salt & pepper Matsusaka beef taken away from him and being forced to diet, was also pretty amusing. Junpei ended up snapping about how selfish Chatora was being and not realizing that his owner was doing this out of love for him, which Nyamsus will be quick to remind you is much like Junpei himself. Junpei seemed to understand this a bit at the end, but Kanako is still a far second to Kaede in his eyes. Poor Kanako. =(

The preview has some crazy magical girl thing going on with Kotone and Akari as well as some Pocky-kissing action. Surprisingly though, that’s Akari and not Kotone! *gasp*

The pool story/fanservice came right out of the manga. I can’t comment on what some of the other manga adaptions are doing, but Nyan Koi! the anime has remained mostly faithful to Nyan Koi! the manga.

  2. I feel really sorry for Kanako. Unless Kaede does something unforgivable, I’m still supporting Kaede x Junpei.
Swimsuits are included in also every anime – it’s part of Japanese culture 🙂

  3. I haven’t read the manga so I dont know how it will all play out but if he has even 1/2 a brain he will end up with the better choice… Kanako. She is hotter then Kaede and loves him. What more could an anime guy ask for?

  4. From what I remember of the manga, the twins weren’t supposed to be in this part. I guess there was a overwhelming request of them or the animators just decided to throw all the female characters in for the heck of fan service.

  5. I don’t recall Nyan Koi! being confirmed for a 12 episode series. Or any number at the moment, actually.

God damn, it better not be only 12 episodes. What the hell are you supposed to do in 12 episodes with this kind of story?

  6. Finally some Kanako Development…. But i still feel sad for kanako since her feeling toward junpei is one sided. and if i not wrong they mixed chapter 14 and chapter 8 for this episode (at first I thought they will skip chapter 8 oh well but i was wrong :))

  7. Seriously, I’ve had bad colds before and I’d never collapsed or saw double. Is there simply just something about the mysterious Japanese cold that seems to make it’s victim faint unexpectedly? The worse it’s gotten for me was a few hours of temporary confusion where I couldn’t tell if I was dreaming or awake. And I was eleven at the time.

I am officially bored with this series. It doesn’t seem like it’s going any where fast. Hell, the ‘help the cats to break your curse’ factor doesn’t even seem like much of an importance now. Lets just run Junpei through the usual harem male easy to misunderstand situations with the girls, wrap it up with a little overused love comedy, and push out the same crap per episode until the last two episodes.

I was hoping to see more progression in the curse (ie Junpei starts getting night visions and claws. Or, better yet, he starts seeing anthropomorphic cat people in place of cats) as he struggles to get rid of it.

Wow, so if someone does not like someone you like, he has half a brain? That’s rather sad and beside, someone who’s hot can be rather subjective. To him, Kaede might be hotter to him than Kanako while to you it’s the other way around. So to make it more fair, anyone with half a brain will choose Kaede because she’s smarter, more athletic, cute, and seems to have feelings for Junpei as well. Now how does that sound?

Anyway, whoever it is it won’t matter because they all are freaking awesome and that includes Nagi as well.

  9. having a hard time picking a character to root for ~”~ if i can root for the twins are one character, i’d think they would win in my book -.- if however, i m only rooting for one person… mizuno 🙂 …. after all … all the girls love junpei anyway, no point giving out sympathy points to any of them… and mizuno dont even know junpei likes her… so she situation is the same as others 😀

  10. If I could be granted 1 wish…. it would be to have a series where Hosoka-sempai and Nagi-sempai are in the same class. Maybe throw in a Tsuruya for good measure.

    Go go wacky sempai series!

  11. Since Ookami Kakushi will be replacing this show next season, I think it is more or less confirmed that Nyan Koi! is only 1 cour long (so 12 episodes is likely)

    More Haruka Tomatsu next week!

  12. When I first watched this episode, I noticed when Akari slapped him, a picture of her blushing and bending over in her swimsuit instantly flashed. Anyone else noticed this? I thought it was wonderful lol…
