Summary:

When Suou finds Shion collapsed, Shion explains that it’s because he paid a suitable remuneration. He then asks her to take him outside because he wants to see the moon, and by the time Misaki and company arrive, the two are gone. Hei meanwhile finds himself locked in battle with Hazuki Mina, and she’s eventually able to tie him up. After kissing him as part of her remuneration, she prepares to kill him, but Kobayashi steps in and reveals that it wasn’t Hei who killed Youko. The real culprit was Shizume Genma who had betrayed them for the CIA, and the Americans have taken over control of most of the organizations inside and outside Japan. Given all this, Mina has Kobayashi and Hei go on ahead while she goes to take care of Genma, and Kobayashi takes Hei to where Yin’s body is. The body, however, is now only an empty shell, and Yin’s awakened spirit has gone to the center of the Gate.

By now, Madame Oreille has brought Misaki and Mao to a building that houses a super-computer created by Dr. Pavlichenko. In it are rows of bodies that look like Shion, and Madame Oreille explains that the super-computer has all records of the world as observed by the Doll Network and all memories of mankind gathered by the ME Network. It was all for Shion’s plan, and Madame Oreille reveals that the moon isn’t really a moon – it’s another Earth created by Shion’s ability. At this moment, unaware of all this, Suou is pushing Shion in his wheelchair somewhere inside the Gate. In talking about Suou’s memories, Shion reveals that he only imagined human-like memories and put them in her and that his dream isn’t a reflection of those memories. He also notes Suou’s sentimentality despite being a Contractor, and Suou attributes it to the influence of the people she traveled with. The two then come across the dead body of a Contractor, and Shion disappears in that instant.

Suou searches inside the Gate for Shion until she comes across one of July’s observer spirits. While she’s following it to him, July is being found by August 7 who tells him that their operation is over. July, however, refuses to go with August 7 and chooses instead to stay with Suou, so August 7 lets him go and disappears. Suou arrives just moments later, and after hugging her, July leads her to Shion and Yin. Suou finds Shion almost dead, and in his final words, he tells her that the deal is done and that he wants her to see the world he created. His spirit then goes to Yin, who is floating above them, and Yin tells Suou that she granted Shion’s wish. At this point, July collapses as well, and, still not really understanding what’s going on, Suou decides to bring out her gun against Yin. This leads to Yin breaking the meteor core on the necklace that Shion is wearing.

As Madame Oreille explains to Misaki and Mao, when they copy a person and implant memories, they can’t establish it for long without the meteor core. They thus used Suou and her journey here as an experiment to make sure that Suou’s memories had set. What this means for Suou now that the meteor core is destroyed is that her memories are leaving her. Realizing what’s happening, Suou tries to resist the loss of memories and aims her gun at Yin again in a last ditch effort, however Hei shows up and stops her from shooting. As he holds her, he tells her that she won’t be needing her gun where she’s going next, and he promises that he’ll always be with her. He lays her down beside July after she loses consciousness, and Yin then tells Hei that it’s not too late to kill her. By the time Misaki arrives on the scene, she sees BK-201’s star lighting up in the sky, and a bright light envelops Yin as she’s touched by Hei.

In the aftermath, Suou lives a normal life with both her parents on the copied Earth. She can sense that something is lacking, and though she’s not lonely, she feels that she knows a certain someone very well and believes that she’ll meet this person someday. Back on the real Earth, Kobayashi thinks that it’s all over, but Misaki feels that things are just beginning, and Madame Oreille picks them both up. They then leave the Gate and start operating independently since America and other countries now control Tokyo, and ironically, they become known as the Syndicate. What they don’t know is what the prophesied newly born thing is and how it will change the world. Unbeknownst to them, a boy resembling Yin wakes up inside the Gate and absorbs the spirits of John Smith and his men. Regardless, Misaki notes that she didn’t heard of Hei again, but she continues to believe that he’s still alive.

Epilogue

So this was quite the ending, and not necessarily in a good way. There were some cool moments, like seeing Mina fight Hei (though it would have been nice to see her fight Genma too), and some amusing moments, like Kobayashi living up to the Golgo 13 nickname at the end. But I was basically going “wtf” the rest of the time – when Madame Oreille started talking about the copied Earth, when August 7 showed up, the list goes on – and parts of it did feel rushed. I guess they managed to resolve most of the key plotlines, but they also left a ton of questions, especially about Yin.

For example, I didn’t understand why there were two of her, white and black, when Hei got there. Was one Yin’s spirit and the other Izanami? And what was Yin’s role in creating the new world? Did Shion copy her in exchange for her help? Is that connected to the boy resembling Yin that sucks up souls at the end? What about Madame Oreille – why was she helping Shion in the first place? Also, if they needed meteor core to maintain everyone’s memories, then doesn’t the copied world need a whole lot of it? And how were they able to retain one day’s worth of memories on the copy of Dr. Pavlichenko that got killed?

I think part of the general problem is that they left a lot up to the audience to infer, and it’s not nearly as concrete an ending as I would have liked. The other way to look at it is that they wrapped things up for Suou but are leaving things very open for a sequel for Hei and Misaki (and whoever else), and this second series is only part of their story. Of course there’s also the upcoming DVD episodes which will hopefully explain more about Yin and how she became Izanami in the first place. The fact though that those episodes are needed to make more sense of this makes me think that they had originally planned this series to be longer and had to compress it into what we saw here.

Final Thoughts:
On its own, this series leaves something to be desired. A lot of the major plot events came way too late, to the point where it felt like they were there for shock value, while some of the earlier episodes didn’t advance the main plot fast enough. Suou’s own story and journey also ends up getting overshadowed by what Shion was doing, and Madame Oreille calling it an experiment made it feel even less significant. The one thing I give them credit for however is the fact that it actually had an overarching story the entire time because, as I’ve said previously, I wasn’t a big fan of the mini-arc format of the first series. The production quality, of course, was also quite high. As I said above though, if you think of this series as part of Hei and Misaki’s story, then it’s not too bad. It just has a lot of loose ends that could very well be tied up in another series. Whether or not there actually will be one remains to be seen. The first DVD episode out of four total will be out with the second DVD on January 27, 2010.

  1. Man, all these screenshots are wtf territory. Hope the subs come out soon. Hei gets all the ladies, even the ones professed to be lesbians! XD And Misaki cleans up nicely when she lets her hair down. This whole business with Yin (or two Yins)… wonder what’s that all about. Damn you Bones!

  2. I was so nervous about the outcome of the ending i had a DREAM about it. Yes. Unbelievable. I was VERY disappointed with the second season. They better not make a THIRD season. It’ll be enough with the OVA which will most probably answer all our questions. This ending wasn’t too bad but ehh… it’s not like i expected much though.

    Steph.
  3. That was fast as hell, I mean REALLY fast as hell. I thought they would do something like this, parallel earths with the whole mystery of the contractor fake sky mess. Its confusing as hell & leaves a hell of alot of crap untold, but I could care less. The 1st season ended this way so I expected nothing less out of the second. All I want to know is WTF happened with Yin, the rest can go to that big contractor cloud in the fake sky. Hopefully the OVA will answer that so I can live in peace.

  4. wow, that;s it? that was..way too fast. and empty. they didn’t fill in half the holes, and wtf happened to Hei?

I guess this confirms a third season, you can’t just leave the main character absent and not know what happened to him..

    Snowolf
  5. This ended almost the same way the first season did.

They didn’t explain shit about Hei and Yin like what the hell happened to them in the end? This whole season seemed kinda pointless since it raised more questions about the series than answer it. I can expect the OVAs to explain how Yin got into this whole mess but it won’t explain what happened to her in the end.

    I expect a third season.

  6. I’m with Sugoi. Loved the episode, and the whole series. I like having my mind blown, don’t you? Omni doesn’t show or mention the scene where Suou is looking up from the new Earth at the real sky (at Orion) and talks about feeling there is someone she is definitely going to meet in the future. I think that means Hei.

  7. There are DVD eps as well, so there’s more coming, plus the OVA is next to fill in more gaps. Probably even a 2nd season, so all the rushing and or leaving these unasnswered is by design. Season 2 has been great. To the people who say this is crap, go stick to your naruto and bleach or the other 234243 pointless ecchi shows with nothing but pantsu shots and lolis.

  8. I can’t see why people are complaining, really, as almost the exact thing happened at the end of the first season. We had an almost EVA-esque ‘congratulations!’ scene then, we have an ‘AU world’ now. The latter being a LITERAL clone world.

  9. People are complaining because they felt it was rushed and many questions are still unanswered. I can’t see why people complain about complainers. It’s much better to counter someone complaining by bringing up the good points.

@GP It’s not like this is the only good anime this season. Aoi Bungaku?

    Nellie
  10. Bah, complainers. I don’t get it. Yall love pointless slapstick shit like Nyan Koi & Kampfer but go to town on a somewhat deep anime just because they were trying to fit 10 lbs of shit in a 5-pound bag. Hell, this is still easily the best show this season. They did answer all the main questions except for Yin & Hei ended up lighting up the sky again. The openess of the ending leaves room for a 3rd season but the sense of a final weird episode was still there as well. In other words, a 3rd season would drag this one into the ground. I just hope they make the OVAs short & sweet.

@ Litho: do you read, it was Genma.

  11. Wtf?! The ending sucked. Wtf was that shit? Darker Than Black has always been about Hei. So, why did they tell us shit about everyone but Hei? Fuckin retarded. Left nothing resolved. Mao was better as a cat. The little girl is a fuckin hermaphrodite. Who gives a fuck about, Misaki. The hell happened to Hei and Yin? I feel like slapping someone. The entire reason for this series was suppose to be for resolving shit. Gah! I’m irritated.

    Daiske
  12. Well, at least Hei apparently got his powers back~ That’s something, at least. And it’s apparently ambiguous whether he killed Yin or lived happily ever after with her, so~ A happy ending, I guess? 0_0

  13. by the way they end the Season 2 i confirm this is the perfect ending no more.

sadly i thought is 26 episode i didn’t expect to be so short 12 episode T_T

  14. Waiting for subs. But I think people (mostly westerners)are overreacting TOO MUCH and are butthurt “because dey didnt explain anything, urg, urg”. This is easily the best show of the season, and Darker than Black is a cool franchise, it doesnt matter if you didnt like the ending (YOU ALL SAID THE SAME THING WITH SEASON 1 ENDING!!) which seems kinda appropiate for a 12 episode series.

Go return to watch NarutoBleachEcchi if your mind can´t handle being forced to think a little you little kids.

  15. This show was about as “deep” as an action movie. Outside of episodes 4, 5, and 12 it was reasonably-entertaining, but other than the usual quality of a Bones show that’s about the highest praise I can offer it. Bones does the wtf ending pretty frequently, too, like with Xam’d, DtB, Eureka Seven, Soul Eater, and FMA.

  16. and they got high level fanboys that defend them like the haruitard. And yes, anyone who complain about the ending also addict to naruto and bleach. Obviously, we got a few know-it-all being here.

  17. iloveanime: Say what? Love picking a fight eh? 😀

(ticks off one series done for the season)

Interestingly enough, it’s just as Omni says: this opens a WIDE door for the sequel. While Ryuusei no Gemini closes some plot threads from S1, there’s a lot still left undefined about the Gates, the Contractors, and now the second Earth.

  18. Cliffhanger endings are the worst.

It wouldn’t be so bad if you knew when and if they were going to resolve major plot threads but leaving things open-ended like this is just a big middle-finger to the fans basically saying “HAHAH buy our DVDs if you want us to finish the story”.

It’s not the first time Bones has produced a series with a nearly incomprehensible ending either.

    Halcyon
  19. Having watched the raw, I felt the ending did feel a bit rushed. From what I can tell, Shion sacrificed himself to create this new world for Suou so that she could live a normal life as a regular kid (along with July) with loving parents. The other stuff such as August 7th’s WTH appearance and the introduction of short hair (shouta?) Yin has piqued my interest and made me scratch my head.

The flying car at the end was just too weird; I mean sure in a world where people have magical abilities to make lightsabers out of anything and pull anti-tank rifles out of their chests it may seem like no big deal but very strange seeing Jetsons type technology in an otherwise present day world, haha.

Hopefully the OVA will explain just what we saw and what happened(ens) with Yin and Hei, though I certainly wouldn’t mind a third season provided they bring the focus back to the two main characters (no more MGS2-like rope-a-dope tricks plz, as much as I liked Suou’s character her story is now done and over with so let’s get back to basics!).

    Raika
  20. @Myssa Rei: not really, I am just sick of all those that bash anyone who dare to complain about their anime and cast the ones that complained as mindless ecchi addicts.

but yeah, hope they make another sequel or ova to answers all the questions in the sequel.

    iloveanime
  21. So what…Yin’s Dead? Judging by the last panel with Hei carrying a lifeless Yin, and the summary Omni proivded; is she? And what’s up with her boy version look-alike? *sigh* This really was a “WTF” ending, and it’s much WORSE than the first season’s.

    Shuffleness
  22. I’d say Yin is alive.

The boy-thing, is the fusion of dark Yin and the other power, I forgot the two names Izanami and Izanagi? Dark Yin is the fake yin, white yin is the real yin. Dark Yin is part of that kid at the end. White Yin is in Yin, I would imagine.

    anon
  23. blehh, i’m ok with the ending.
however season was too ‘everywhere’ i personally think that it should have focused more on hei and yin but that’s what the ova is for, right? it was rushed, but this sci-fi kinda ending did it for me
i want a season 3, or a really good ova

    anna
  24. To me the way they had that “Yin-boy” wake up at the end and the “I know he’s alive somewhere” moment with Misaki, and Hei walking somewhere with Yin’s body makes me think that there will be a Season 3 or something..
Also, my theory on “Black and White Yin” is that they were used as connection points from the Old Earth to the New Earth.

    Aterin
  25. why is creating a copy earth so bad? what was so much of a threat about the prophesy and shion and all that stuff?

too bad this is the last time we’ll see Suou if they do indeed make a 3rd season. A sad ending since she’ll live in the dream world forever.

    drzero7
  26. hmm..
    well.
i saw the ending and it was wtf..of curse…
but after reading all this I think it`s not over- I think there should be a third season- because misaki still belives that hei is alive..jap..so much things left without answer..
so there is going to be some kind of ovas?

  27. O__O Can’t wait to see with subs…

I don’t know, I have expected this kind of mysterious ending from the very end. The first season ended like that XD But second is even more like “that” =D

What I saw and read in this blog , I love the end ^^

I would like season 3… but I would leave it like this =] Good ending with loads of cliffhangers XD

    Ite
  28. Um, unfortunately, I think from interviews or official guide materials, the production team had said there will be no sequels =[

except for the episodes in the coming DVD and BD explaining the events between Yin and Hei

    Cancer
  29. I think season 3 is still open, especially the “unknown” person which sucks spirits. It’s closed for Suou, but still quite opened for all others.

But I think I have to prepare myself that Hei could not be the main character anymore, although it sounds rather ridiculous. =) happy holidays and merry christmas

    Kinky
  30. So everyone just assumes that Hei got his old contractor power back(or maybe something new), just because his star returned in the sky?? I take it Hei was in the middle of the gate, so it’d make sense for him to gain an ability once again??

    Someone please clarify. =)

And I seriously hope a new season comes alot sooner, instead of waiting a few years for it.

    zerophyte
  31. Why does everyone say it’s done for Suou? There was a part at the end where she says that she feels she will meet the person she’s been thinking about one day. If there is a season 3, they can easily bring her back in.

    Tre
  32. Or she could easily become the next misaki lol, and you now what happened to her, chasing cars any one!!! i too think her story is pretty much done at this point she has her happy end clannad style , and i wouldn’t take those words seriously hei is notorious for not keeping promises, now for everyone else in the real world everything is open though, they are the ones who have to deal with the evil spawn lol, but for real wtf bones you need to work harder on your endings, you are being a serial offender –_–.

    luckyhuh
  33. Lolwtf?

Damn Bones, why couldn’t you extend this to 13 eps. At least this episode wouldn’t have felt so rushed, and this series so crummy.

There better be a season 3 and it better go back the core reasons of why DtB1 was so good: action and characters. Plot, not so much, it’s never been too great at that haha.

And Misaki is lookin fiiiiine <3

    invAZN
  34. Actually it makes sense.

Shion and ‘Yin’ made a deal. What was that deal? Second, we know that Suou’s copies are not perfect. Yin could have asked for a copy of herself. The copy could have been male just as Shion’s Suou was female.

    1) Shion made planet ‘Copy’
2?) Shion made a ‘Yin Copy’
    3) Yin transports Suou to ‘Copy’
4?) Yin could have transported essentials to ‘Yin Copy’

Was the deal to made ‘Yin’ a copy in exchange transport Suou to planet ‘Copy’? Then what is ‘Copy”s missing fault? Perhaps it is the lack of contractors from the real earth and that real earth may be destroyed or mangled beyond recognition. Would this explain why a ‘Copy’ would be needed to provide evidence of the existence of man?

    Lodestone
  35. This season might have been salvaged if we could have seen the OVAs connecting the seasons. And for the title being the twin Gemini, we saw Shion like 3 times, plus what was the point of his weird meteor eye?

    Sunburn
  36. the ending leaves us more unanswered questions! There are still some questions not answered yet from season 1. And then there’s season 2…
Oh well, love the series. Fantastic. Though DTB is full of mystery, so that’s what it is.
I guess the OVA will answer everything , I guess.
Hope there would be a season 3.
    Maybe on 2011, I guess…

    hell yeah
  37. Everyone who says it was a shitty ending and that the first season was better, I really just have to say if only it was a 26-episode season – leaves more room for development. This season had potential. I’m sort of crushed Hei and Suou may never see each other again; just when I started warming up to them. 🙁

    Haruka
  38. I don’t know…I guess I have a weakness for endings that are not completely resolved, but I do appreciate the way DTB has never explicitly stated its main themes. It’s sort of flattering to one’s intelligence, and it leaves us with a lot to think about. Generally, I found this sequel to be as clever and vague and cleverly vague as the first series (of which I am a pretty big fan), but more consistently engaging.

And let’s not forget to give the writers credit for creating a totally new show with a totally new concept and structure that nonetheless retained the strong character of the original work. That was one ballsy move.

  39. O_O
I have alot of question, like why did August 7 appear? I mean he was killed long ago, and at the coppied earth does July got emotions? a new start? evenso he is so cute when he smiles! x3

    July!
  40. What was the show that they promo’d right after the DTB:RNG credits? It was on the raw but not the subs. Looked interested and I assume it will get DTB:RNG’s timeslot.

    Anyone?

  41. To be honest, I’m not surprised by the ending. I just wish that there were more answers and more episodes for character and plot development. It really felt too rushed.

And lol @ people bashing others for criticizing the show. It’s one thing to bash a work of fiction, and it’s another to bash real people and call them ecchi-loving Narutards. :/ Tsk.

    OIC
  42. I immediately thought “OMG Yin and Yang!” when I saw the two Yins. It kinda makes sense, with Yang being Izanami…?
Doing this with the endings is kinda like this series’ trademark, so I’m not too pissed about it as long as they either have a third season or answer our Q’s in the OVA. If that doesn’t happen, I’m sending angry fanmail to the producers.

    Kit Kat
  43. Too many questions left unanswered. Actually, it seemed to have brought up even more questions than it answered. I dont think its that bad, as we can/should expect more from the dvd episodes and a third season (Im guessing there is going to be one). This also leaves me nothing to watch for now, except railgun.

    trickz
  44. I didn’t really understand this, but I can clear up somethings for you:
In Chinese, Yin means Dark… she was dressed in black. Her counterpart is Yang…Light… the white Yin that appeared? I’m sure you’ve seen the Yin/Yang Chinese symbol.
On an interesting note, Hei means black in Chinese… Hei-black; Yin-dark… interesting 😛
^although I don’t see the point of creating Yang

As for Yin’s role in this: Shion can only create physical copies… while Yin could take souls/memories.
Saw all the floaty things around Yin? That’s all the people she “killed”. In reality, she just planted their souls into the bodies and world that Shion created.
Something that supports this is that in the epilogue, all the people we see in Shion’s created world were “dead” in the original world: her father, her mother, and Suou herself.
Perhaps, because contractors live such miserable lives in the real world, Shion created a world in which contractors would live happily… that’s why Yin had to go around taking the souls of contractors.
As for everybody needing meteor cores… maybe that’s where Hei comes in? Perhaps when Hei’s abilities were squeezed out of him, Yin somehow got a hold of it. When Hei touched her, he got his abilities back, so his star shines once again. And when it shone so brightly, it meant that he’s using the ability A LOT. What kind of task would be so great that his star shone so much? Maybe… changing stuff at the molecular level so people’s memories would stay 😉

    Helen
  45. Well, supposedly the OVA’s will only answer our questions that are concerned with the time gap between the end of season 1 and beginning of season 2. Right???

So all our questions post Season 2 will not be answered for a long time yet, unless one of the ova eps is after season 2?? That’d be awesome.

Otherwise, I hope there will be a season 3 and hopefully we will not end up waiting 2 to 2 1/2 years for the sequel.. >.<

    zerophyte
  46. Yin for her name means silver, but the yin-yang relationship could still hold true. I don’t know why anyone is expecting an announcement for a 3rd season now, it’s not like they announced the second season at the end of the first. They’ll certainly make a third season if they have the money, so buying the DVD/Blu-Ray discs can’t hurt.

    curious one
  47. The ending was rushed plain and simple, way to many unanswered questions and the last episode just created more of them. While I still am a fan of this series it just didn’t feel like an ending at all, but at least it for some reason made me feel more satisfied then season 1. Lets all just hope we can get some more answers when we see the ova’s and a possible season 3.

    sigh
  48. @Helen:

The character for Yin’s name is silver, not for shadow. It’s 銀(Yin4), not 阴 (Yin1)…although I guess the series wouldn’t have differentiated between the two inflections.

    Just a reminder~

    Reflectia
  49. What didn’t make sense was the whole power struggle. Yin clearly couldn’t be controlled by anyone, so it was in the interest of all the national and pan-national organizations to seal her away. It makes no sense that the CIA would try to stop Section from sealing her away. I can only imagine it was meant as some referendum on American imperialism.

The Yin and Hei story was not resolved in the slightest. Leaving more questions than answers. What we do know is that BK201’s star is still visible from both real and copy earth.

I hope fake earth is involved in season 3, assuming there is a season 3, or this side-story would have been almost completely pointless [at least we got a kick ass soundtrack, even surpassing the kick-ass soundtrack of season 1].

Hopefully oneday we can see MisakaxHei before she turns into a crazy old cat lady.

    So Very Odd
  50. I can def see a season 3… the ending did seem rushed. Still I like how DTB doesn’t feel the need to explain every little detail and resolve all any little question we have. Makes me feel like one of the characters who never really gets to see the big picture.

They did have to throw in the fact of an emergence of a new gate at the end too.. and to me it really looks like the Hells Gate in Tokyo is no more, it looks like just a ruined city. Maybe a season 3 taking place at the new gate with the tokyo & south american gates being no more?

    imerik
  51. My interpretation of the ending:
Basically, inside the gate it grants wishes to those there, but at a cost (they say in the episode that inside the gate wishes are granted). The problem arises from the ambiguity of what Shion’s wish may have been. Consider his grasp over how the clones worked his wish may have been for the clone of the Earth to live without losing it’s memories as the other clones had. My reasoning for this assumption is that the clone is created before he goes to the inside of the gate. He knew that the memories of the clones did not last so he needed to do something in order to make it more then a superficial world that would last only a short time (this is assuming there was no meteor to be the clone worlds core to hold it’s memories intact seeing as with the destruction of the core lead to the destruction of Suou’s memories).
The other problem arises as to who Izanami and Izanagi were. One guess could be that one was Yin (obviously), and the other was Shion. I say Shion was the other as noted from the first episode when we see the astral form (seen in the first episode when the meteor hits and there is a astral entity there in the midst of it). The problem was it is also ambiguous as to whether this was Suou’s memory of the incident in which case it could be a made up memory that Shion placed in her (in that event it could be that Shion placed her in that memory, the events of which may or may not have actually occurred). The idea that Shion could place fake memories in Suou is where the problems of the storyline collapse (we don’t know if the first episode actually happens). Under the assumption that it did actually happen the story makes much more sense. The experiment then becomes not whether or not Suou could retain memories, but if she could perform the role of Shion as Yin’s other in the event of Shion’s passing. In Shion’s passing the other Yin does not yet appear. It doesn’t appear until after Suou’s death. This shows that the experiment was a success as she was able to fulfill his role. The reason for Shion’s death to create the other Earth was because they weren’t sure if Suou would be able to fulfill that role or not. This meant that the Earth would have been able to go past the cataclysmic event regardless of what happened with Suou as she had become something that was out of their control (she was acting on her own heading towards the Gate). It was a sort of fail safe. When Suou does die the other Yin appears meaning that she could in fact perform the role as the other Shion that they weren’t certain of. When the two joined as one they created another being (this is shown when Misaki is the air watching Hei with his hand on the chest of a naked girl as Suou and July lay dead next to him). This means that Hei was able to destroy the being that was created as a result of the two coming together so the world was saved and Shion’s effort was not needed. Hei was essentially a wild card because they did not take into account what he would actually be able to accomplish. He has been as such since the beginning in that his powers were lost.
It’s apparent that Hei does kill Yin (or the being that is created by the two merging for that matter) as seen from Misaki watching over head as Hei has his hand on it’s body and from Heir carrying it away in the very last moments of the episode. The problem was that in the two meeting a third gate was opened, hence the scene with the other child that resemble Yin at the end (also the scene of the dolls that belong to Madam Oreille going to see it). This leaves an opening for a third season revolving around the third gate.
The unknowns are why Yin is the one of the two (Izanami and Izanagi), if Shion really was the other (and if Suou could also play that role), and what happens to numerous characters in the aftermath. Not as a straight forward an anime as others and does require a second run through to pick up the many clues as to what happens in the ending so it’s not as much of a mindfuck, but that’s what makes it rather amazing.

    (TL;DR:
-Shion is the other (of the Izanami/Izanagi pair); the experiment was whether or not Suou (as a copy of Shion) could perform the same role as Shion as part of the two not if she could retain her memories.)

  52. @ So Very Odd

I had that same feeling too. It’s pretty popular in anime these days to paint Americans as Imperialist bad guys. XD Blood+ did it, Ghost in the Shell too (the US is called the American Empire for crap’s sake), etc., etc.

I’m also looking forward to the soundtrack’s release. Season 1’s was brilliant, and though season 2 did without Yoko Kanno they did a great job in spite of her absence.

    Raika
  53. Hmmm. Slightly let down with this season.
It answered a few questions and I enjoyed the relationship between Hei and Suou along with Misaski chasing Hei, but overall, not as good as the first season.
I rather enjoyed the first season and how it had various arcs that lasted 2 or 3 eps, which eventually linked to one big conclusion. Season 2 tried to just maintain one big plot and didn’t really keep interest at all times. July also wasn’t a strong enough character to replace Yin.
Overall I’d give it an 8/10 and I pray to god they do a season 3 and revert back to season one’s style of storytelling as well as length.

  54. I was so suprised. I hadn’t even looked at the number of episodes there would be and was completely caught of guard when it ended at 12. It was kinda a bs ending to me as it still didnt explain hell and heavens gate. Plus a third gate appeared so it seems like maybe this won’t be the end. Sorta like with Full Metal Panic

  55. I don’t belive that yin is dead. When they show hei holding her body at the end there is no damage to the body, which does happen, i.e. Wei. Also we don’t see what hei is doing exactly, he could have been shocking her, but it didn’t look like it. Also this is hei, unlike everyone else who gets two options, he gets three. So maybe he found some way to save yin without worry about her killing everything.

    magixiii
  56. so is suou now living in a fake world with fellow copies? is the july in that world a copy or the real july? The whole series was really confusing but i atleast expected them to answer some questions at the end…

    sean
  57. I missed the first season’s mini stories that introduced the characters and the world itself to the viewer. The story had a great many gaps missing and unlike the first season, the holes in the story made it very, very confusing and difficult to follow. What I’m wondering is whether the dolls are collecting people’s memories/souls etc when they killed them and then transporting them to Shion’s new world he made. Whenever one of them died, they joined that giant swirling mass of things swirling around them. It’s unclear at the end, but it seems like out of the two pairs, Izanami and Izanagi, one of them (I’ll say not Yin) made his way to that other planet. Yin seems to have ended up with Hei. The real question is what Hei did or gave up 1) in order to get his power back and 2) what he did with his ability to reform matter.
A Third season could deal with that, and hopefully the OVA’s will deal with the backstory to this season.

Overall, I enjoy this season, but not nearly as much as the first. I agree with blinx01 in that I hope if there is season 3 they go back to the original style of story telling and make it 26 episodes. They definitely rushed this series and crammed far too much into the last few episodes and lost a chance to show a few fight scenes or tell the story more completely and in depth. The subtly and pacing of the first season was what made it so great. In this season, they put things on basically fast forward and made what could have easily been a 25 episode season into 12 episodes.

  58. This doesn’t feel like an ending at all. Yes, they wrapped Suou’s story, but everything else is left dangling. This feels like only 1/2 of the story has actually been told. At this point, I’m pretty sure the ‘Black Contractor’ OVA that’s coming out is SUPPOSED to explain WTF is going on here. But the fact that the OVA comes AFTER this and yet is REQUIRED for this series to make sense just smacks of bad writing.

    Kurotetsu
  59. I’ll add that when the 1st season pulled this same trick (all character development, no plot development) it was forgiveable because the plot was meant to take a backseat to character development right from the beginning. In THIS series, the plot overpowers everything else right from the start (you know alot of shit has happened since the end of S1, and figuring out what that is distracts from whatever character development is being presented to you). It was cute in S1, but its dumb in S2.

    Kurotetsu
  60. Oh my god! this episode made me sad since I had enjoyed the series and was anticipating a good ending. I watched it in raw as well with subs, and after both I was left saying ” what the hell just happened!”

I wish it had been better! I wanted to know more about Hei and Yin!

    Bitte
  61. Something no one seems to have noticed is that the huge super-computer network that Madame Oreille has built is usuing the actual meteor that hit Shion at the beginning of the series! Did no one else notice the huge globe in the middle of the room that was identical to Suou’s pendant? And that it had disappeared after the Second Earth was completed?

I’ve rewatched this episode about 5 times now and all the answers (other than relating to Yin since they’re saved for the OVA) ARE there, you just have to notice them in all the tiny details.

This gets a 10/10 from me. Reminds me of The End of Evangelion in terms of how they’ve done this, the clues are there for you to decipher.

    Alb
  62. An interesting thing to note, the breaking of Suou’s piece of the meteor was actually Yin returning Hei’s powers to him. The anti-contractor weapon or whatever really only sealed/transfered his power to Suou or, at least, to her pendant, hence why I believe the gun comes from there. As for what Hei does to Yin once he regains his powers, I don’t think that will be answered till either the OVA’s or even a 3rd season but I do wonder about that giant pillar he created.

However, as Alb mentions, the giant meteor chunk in the super computer is probably used to anchor the memories so they’re not going to fade.

    Sweeper
  63. I think at least some of the confusion would be cleared up if we had a better understanding of the whole Contractors/Sky deal.

For me personally, I’m not really sure how creating a copy of the world is supposed to work exactly. In season 1 I remember it being mentioned briefly that there had been several attempts to send probes up beyond the sky after the gates appeared, but with no success.
There is something weird happening above/around the earth, and considering that I’m not really sure how it’s even possible to create another planet that wouldn’t be suffering the same condition, but this new planet appears fine (normal night sky there at the end, what looked like Orion’s Belt, maybe)

For that matter, where was it fading away to at the end?

Overall I wish that the series had been longer, and I found myself a little disappointed with character development (especially Suou’s).

While I do appreciate the effort of giving us an ending that they felt appropriate, I can’t help but wish we had been left with something that didn’t require the viewer to infer so much.

    Galaxyfalcon
  64. I was so expecting Yin and Hei to die at the end. It seemed really fitting and in the opening credits it shows two starts fall. WTF

I hope there is another series though. For all of it’s problems Darker than BLACK is really exciting 🙂

  65. Alright, so in the end Suou moved or transferred to the copied world with July and sadly enough, Yin died. So I guess in the copied world Suou be with July in the end, since there is no way she can meet Hei anymore due to Shion being dead and all. So Suou is out of the picture and Yin who is the one with the best chances with Hei or perhaps already had a romantic relationship with him, is now unfortunately dead. Man it really sucks for Hei man! I mean he gets a lot of girls to fall for him thus creating his harem, but eventually they all disappear or die one by one! So I agree with you Omni, with the rest of the girls out of the picture, it would be appropriate for a sequel of Hei and Misaki’s story. Also man, is Hei’s charisma or pheromones working again? I never thought he would lose against Hazuki (though understandable since he has no powers), but I would never imagine Hazuki hesitating to kill him like that after her declaration that she will kill him.

I might be reading way too much into this, but dont tell me that she will eventually be part of Hei’s harem lol! Although, jokes aside, it would be really awesome for the two to hook up (romantically or not), as partners working together, man they would be unstoppable! As much as I prefer Hei to be with Misaki, I don’t want to see her die and she would most likely be if she hooks up with Hei. As much as the guy is a chick magnet, he also lives up to his rep of being the Dark Reaper, man so many of the girls who like him ended up dying. Although if it’s with Hazuki, I see a much more stronger partner relationship that will most likely last much longer than the rest of the girls.

    Hei-LivingTheDream
  66. Ok, so much questions for the main stuff that is really left open for interpretation. So I’m not even going to go there, instead I’ll question the minor details, “Why did Hazuki Mina hesitate to kill Hei?” I just didnt get that part the most, after she discovered Youko’s body and declared that she will kill BK201, and that she had the chance to do that, but chose not to. I thought from what was mentioned here in the blog, that she was stopped before she could do it by Kobayashi revealing the truth to her, but when I watched it, Mina hesitated way before that. She didnt choose to kill him even after Hei talked about Youko and said that he didn’t care about their true purposes or objectives at all. She even mentioned that little hint to Hei that Izanami is waiting for him.

What in the world is her logic to this? Seeing as Mina is a contractor who goes by logic like all contractors does, why would she hesitate to kill Hei, knowing that she initially thought that he was the one who killer her and also it would be reasonable to kill him now that he has no powers and it may just be her only chance to do so. I’m starting to think that her actions may just be shed light and as well as Misaki and Madam Orielle in the third season, which I sincerely hope they will do. I mean come on, there are other series out there that gets a third season despite a horrible second season or first season. DtB has to have one as well!

    AnimeCritic
  67. Is it just me or did it feel like season 1 left so many unanswered questions and then season 2 left even more. The plot feels even more disjointed now and especially the understanding of the gate. They didnt really do much inside the gate this time comapared to last time and also it seemed very different to the inside of hells gate we saw last season. Its like they rushed the ending a lot and then jumped the shark i mean the car flew off in the sunset pretty much … flew.

    Omega
  68. Damn. Too many things left unanswered. But…..
-At least they show USA being greedy again.
-Suou’s story is done she got sent to the copied Earth (Done)
-Hei is with Yin (More information guess though DVD/Blu-Ray OVAs) A 3rd season?
-Newly accused Syndicate: Misaki, Orielle, Kobayashi, Mao and perhaps Hazuki (hope she’s alive, she’s cool with Misaki–she stabbed Shizume in the eye with precision)
-Damnit hot Tanya died fuuuuucccccckkkkkk! Oh well we have Misaki still.
-More Amber and Misaki and Hei/Pai Electrocuting!!!!

    Dexter
  69. I’m hoping theres a third season. That was a good ending, but I hope they can explain all that happened in this season in bits and peices in the third one. I mean, whats going to happen if other Earth finds real Earth? Then they fight, make a third season of it, and amist the confusion Hei sees Suou, Yin gets her wtf moment, and everyone stops pretending like its amazing Lost and simply explains whats going on. That would be boss. ^^

    Duelit
  70. Bluntly…. This series was awful.

Hei is the main character, and yet he does very little
Yin is a major plot point and yet they just glossed over what the hell she is about.
They casually mention the after math in a 2 minute dialog.
Basically all the cool stuff in season 1 was removed, and replaced with an irritating girl with a gun.

Also, explaining a HUGE plot gap with, we will release a special DVD months after this series is like telling someone the end of a movie before watching it. This is going on the pile of awesome series that should NEVER have had a second season.

NB: I think the earth was created by the meteor that hit Shion 2 years ago, ie much bigger than the necklace.

    Feik
  71. The ending overall was good, but it felt way too rushed, i think its obivious that there will be a 3 season, and yah, but the wait is the problem, i waited since 2007 for this season and it was only 12 episodes long, wtf!3 season better come next year because this season just left me craving for some more, JUST LIKE THE FIRST ONE!!!!!!!

    Wrath
  72. You know after reading the manga (The second one the first one kinda sucks) this anime really cramps it style. It’s better written and even more relevant than this anime has shown. Why kill April and August and just have August return? He was a character that wasn’t even relevant to the plot or established enough to see return. Heck even Suou seems like a useless character (Though I did know she would die) they should have gone back to doing what they do best and have them do the mini arc thing. I found the random stories a lot more interesting than having a random story which is basically retconned in the end (Hei is basically in the same position as in the start of the series).

  73. i don’t really get this ending but whatever, hopefully maybe they will make another series or ova or movie, something to fix it. do we know what anime is going to replace this one?

    ∞ ARIES
  74. One thing is for sure… DTB2 was rushed! I mean common guys… they didn’t even animate the fight scene between Hazuki and Genma. Not to mention the super confusing ending! I love the characters and the whole idea of contractors and crap but time after time the story lets me down…
Its sad but really, so much potential down the grade.

If they had a few more episodes to wrap things up, everyone would definitely be happier!

    Muginjin
  75. I dont think we should compare the 1st and 2nd season especially in terms of development. The 2nd season has after half the episodes of season 1. Im pretty sure that if it has 24 eps as well, things would be a whole lot different.
The way DTB runs as a franchise, they seem to be really business minded. Tending to leave so many answers in mangas, ovas and DVDs. I can’t really blame them, the reason anime is made is to after all make money. To the extent of forgetting the fans feelings. And by leaving so many unanswered questions, is an indirect way promoting the DVDs, which isnt really a positive way of doing it. People tend to see things in a “FOC” point of view.
I think, just like many other series, having a season 3 will depend a whole lot on the sales of the Dvds.
Therefore i think there shouldn’t be a debate about whether there will be a season 3, if Bones decides that they want a season 3, they would just make it. Because they can. All those unanswered questions are like backups they keep in case they decide on a season 3. But if lets say the Dvds arent selling well and Bones decide not to have a season 3 then, this is it. Therefore there is no answer yet for an existence of a season 3. But i have a feeling with all these empty spaces that they are encouraging us to make it possible for a next season.

    Zwei
  76. Taking it positively. (I always do that)
Hope that this is some kind of filler, or secondary story with some original elements included from the original story (y’ know, something like 30% of the the true storyline, and 70% filler)

I also think that there will be a second season or something. So… maybe this is some kind of… how can i say it. If this season wouldn’t come in the first place, let’s say that “the water would already evaporated from the pot” or something like that. This was like putting more water into it… i mean, this was to make time and to shake a bit the fans, in order to give the creators to show some more decent story later (leaving a story long time dead, without showing something new… sometimes is no good, although, i don’t know under what circumstances)

    Xanathos
  77. Awesome, but totally WTF ending! Kinda like Soul Eater… T_T
    Great review though!!!
I’ve watched the season finale too and I agree that it ended quite soon. Now we’re all left with more questions than answers. I mean, did Hei REALLY kill Yin? (Hopefully NO) Who’s the Yin-look-a-like? and What happened to Hazuki? etc…
=The third question is a personal one since I’m also a fan of Hazuki-kun… seeing as how Genma got what was coming to him, I can only assume that she might make an appearance on the next season…
=As for Suou, her ending is bittersweet ‘coz she got the normal life she deserved but lost the man she loved. But at least July is happy (finally)…:)
=Overall, the DTB 2 ending is begging for a Season 3… since the upcoming OVA would only show how Hei and Yin lived and got separated… HeiXYin forever!!!

    Akura
  78. It’s interesting how we seem to approach the sense of self. Would you really be fine with dying if your memories were copied into another body? I can’t help but think that new person, despite having your memories, is a new and separate individual, and you, the original really did die. In that sense, it makes the Suo ending even more bittersweet in that she does die; her memories being altered and imprinted in an Earth-Ark that Shion created hardly has any relevance in that matter.

Anyways, I loved this season, and loved the ending. Resolution, resolution. What is this intrinsic human need for closure. Can’t we simply enjoy a chapter in the fictional world of DtB?

As for confusions aroused…it still amazes me how this generation has the greatest tool ever available in the history of mankind for gaining knowledge, and yet how few of you seem to have even bothered to look up the Izanami/Izanagi mythology in order to see the parallels with this season.

I’m so sad it’s over. In the glut of school/harem/panty-flash/power-up/fight villain x+1, once a season or two we get anime that attempts to tell an actual story despite the economic incentives that I can only imagine must be in place that allows for all the non-story drivel to dominate the marketplace.

As for whether there will be another season, who knows. Both seasons have been narrated by Misaki as if she was relating a past experience and it’s ominous that she ends this one by saying she never saw Hei again. While I’d love to continue seeing into the world of DtB, I think this is a fine ending if it is in fact the end (outside the OVAs).

    Drew
  79. wholeheartedly agree with drew. The story for this season was nice. Yes the season did leave as with more qiuestions but really, why would u want to solve EVERYTHING to a good series? thats just killing the series, and no COMPANY would do that to a profitable series.

That said if they don’t have a Season 3 i’m gonna RAGGEEEE lol

  80. The first part of Season 2’s soundtrack has been released and it kicks all sortsa ass. “Dive into the 9” (the theme that plays during Hei’s fight with August 9) is especially badass. Looking forward to the rest, particularly the theme that plays during Hei’s final battle with Hazuki.

    Raika
  81. kk i agree with the wtf and how the hell did this turn out points, I’m not even ganna touch it towards all those unanswered questions either… Its noticeable that they rushed the ending, to a point that when I watched this it wasn’t until when I got to the epilogue that I knew that the moon they were all looking at was really a copied earth by Shion. Anyways I only wanna know one thing, does anybody know anything about Yin being pregnant or something? Because somewhere during a scene between Hei and Kobayashi were they were talking Kobayashi said something about Yin and the moon being her last phase of pregnancy or something?? i wanna know what that has to do with the story….

also a side note WTF is with the weird boy in a neat coffin? At first I thought it was July, but the hair colour hints at it being perhaps Yin or something… anyways to sum it up I really hope they get towards answering these last few questions that they threw at the audience perhaps some random idea to try to hook more ppl into wanting a third season for sure… Ahhh oo well i’m ganna be suckered into watching it either way hehehe I can’t help it Hei’s character is awesome and I wanna know wat happens next so I hope they actually get towards making it fast and not make people wait 2 years like they did.

    Tams
  82. This sucks. There was a shiny light and then everything was over. I don’t even mind that Hei and Yin might have went waltzing off into some unknown spirit-universe to never be seen again, but PLEASE don’t let that be the last we see of Suou. She was pretty much the focus of the series and then you suddenly just cast her into some fake happy world to live the rest of her life in ignorance? Why would they do this?! It’s like she had practically NO significance whatsoever! I mean, she had already pretty much been beaten with a stick of lameness to begin with. Sad face, DTB, sad face indeed.

    MaiXiu
  83. About memory of Dr. Pavlichenko: Copy of Dr. Pavlichenko was killed in first episode, so there was no nead for the second meteor core for real one killed on last episode to maintain his memory.

    dziwny
  84. Honestly, compared to the first season, second season was no more than piece of unfinished work. I know that every studio needs to earn cash by why would they waste such a potential. I was very very disappointed with this sequel as a matter of facts I still am. What bones did is a unspeakable cruelty to the fans of the show if you ask me, even more so becouse first 2-3 episodes were quite great. Well Nothing lost nothing gained I hope I will learm from this experience and never again will I watch sequels of my favorites shows.

    Fapir
  85. It all started out interesting until this episode came and shattered everything to bits. I, too, was going “what the!?” throughout the episode. 🙁 Would this “fake world” merge back with the current world that still lacks the real sky? (Reminds me too much of Sailor Moon’s first season ending…) And Hei….. Whaaaaaaaaat!? *starts to picture Hei carrying Yin for all eternity* I appreciate some of the character development out of him but….still…. Can’t he move on? =_= Very disappointing indeed… I mean, the last episode had some stuff that I forgave but this one… Ragh.. What about all those crazy “Shion” clone bodies? *snaps a pencil*

    tg
  86. well, well, there are a lot of comments for it not ending.. in an “ending” manner.. however it only shows that it calls for a 3rd season ^^.. why you guys act as if this second season will be the very last?? i enjoyed the series, i just hope that in the third one(if there is any) it will already come to a conclusion.. and i also hope that the anime making wouldn’t always be going on a 12 episode types.. sighs.. only a few now remained to be 24-episode types..

    tabga
  87. WHAT IS THIS I DON’T EVEN…

    This entire season was …

Well, It started off good, lots of contractor battles btwn Hei and MI6, but then after Hei loses his powers it goes downhill..

Souo can’t fight fo shet, and a lot of episodes are Hei training her, and her adventures with that black guy in love with her, her running, etc. >> Nothing important even happened until the last episode, and then it was all confusing.

The first season was like that too…really random plot line. But at least it had lots of action, and season 2 had about none from episode 3 – 11.

    Phantom
  88. I refuse to believe that Hei kills Yin here.
Every part of my brain tells me that that would be the appropriate ending
with all the “You can still kill me Hei” and “Let’s end this Yin” dialogue.

What happened to “producing electricity is just the tip of the iceberg”?
The BK-201 shone that brightly!! I would like to think that someway or another,
Hei’s powers got a little stronger.
And besides, when Hei made contact with Yin, there was some pink light.
You just don’t kill people with pink light!

This feels a lot like the TTGL ending.. only a lot more open ended, and less GAR..

    JLee
  89. i posted this on another thread but here’s my take on this episode and the fate of hei and yin… (whether there’s a season 3 or not). HUGE SPOILERS AHEAD!!!! (some points are obvious and factual, others are my interpretations)…

    1.) Yin’s alter/supra ego is Izanami

    2.) Shion’s alter/supra ego is Izanagi

3.) Izanami, mythologically speaking, is like the god/being of destruction. As we have seen, all Izanami pretty much does is kill or cause chaos (many bodies in her wake)

4.) Izanagi, mythologically speaking, is like the god/being of creation. As we have seen, Shion is able to create copies of people as well as a new earth (!!!)

5.) The two must meld together and become one again (for some greater purpose/fulfillment of prophesy. Maybe they were whole at one point in time and the appearance of The Gate was a result of the sundering of the two halves (this has been a huge theme in literature and film i.e. The Dark Crystal).

6.) Hei has always said, regardless of the prophesy and other some such, that his goal was to kill Izanami or “her” (in quotes)…he never said he was going to kill Yin. He wants to destroy that which separated him from Yin, whatever entity that changed her.

7.) As Izanami draws Izanagi’s and July’s souls to her, Yin extends herself as a last ditch effort and appears and appeals to Hei to kill her because it’s not too late (she does this in OVA 4 so it’s definitely Yin). Though she was not able to keep the awakening from happening in full like she did initially, she manages to send herself out one last time to Hei

8.) Misaki sees Hei’s star shine exponentially brighter in the night sky than ever before. This signifies Hei’s powers and that of his sister have returned in full force (and then some). Possibly when Izanami broke Suou’s pendant, his power was released and amplified. He takes the meteor core (either still in pieces from when Izanami broke Shuou’s pendant or it formed into a whole piece again after the fact like it did in season one when amber had broken it into pieces but it went back to being whole) to destroy Izunami via Yin’s last ditch attempt to save this crazy world.

9.) Hei changes Izanami on a molecular level via Yin’s projection thus preventing the Iza/Iza binding. He has never been one to do either A or B. The knowing smile he gives before he saves Yin (yes, SAVES YIN, imo) is because he is choosing Option C.

10.) Soon after, we hear that another Gate has appeared (the twins call it out) because the actual completion of Izanami and Izanagi was prevented by Hei and Yin, another gate must appear.

11.) Thus resulting in the boy we see in the fields. He looks like a boy version of Yin. Imo,he is a new yet incomplete Izanami incarnate signified by the arrival of a new Gate. Yin (proper) has split from that entity completely and there is no consciousness to hold the new Izanami back now. So this kid wakes up and just starts consuming as soon as his eyes open. I don’t think feel this is the “unkown being” that was prophesied to wreak havoc.

12.) During the molecular change, as noted above, Yin and Izanami disconnected as beings totally. Yin was never a shell that remained in that box though that’s what everyone thought (Kobayashi’s words). Izanami had just seemingly taken over her wholesale and their entities were tightly intertwined but we see that Yin boldly asserted herself at the last moment to Hei so she was still around. Once the disconnect occurred, the remnants of Yin returned to her body. We see in OVA 4 that she is still in her mind and talking to Shion, even while encased in that box and Izanami is free.

13.) Hei is seen carrying Yin’s naked body off. This is clearly the Yin from the box in the room, not Yin that showed herself to Hei moments before. Hei went back to the bldg after the change, disconnected Yin from the tubes and carried her off with him, at last alone together. His star back to shining in the night sky. They set off somewhere and, IMO, Yin regains consciousness and though it takes a long time recuperating, she slowly but surely returns to herself.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!!!!! They live and are happy together eventually!!!!! Waaaaah!!!
