Summary:

Kuroko’s relationship with her dorm manager hasn’t been getting any better, but that changes after she and Mikoto see the woman buying some pizzas and bringing them to an orphanage. As it turns out, Uiharu and Saten’s teacher Daigo also works there, and it’s clear to Kuroko that her dorm manager has a crush on him. Kuroko thus takes it upon herself to help out and sets it up so that the dorm manager gets to spend time with Daigo, but what really impresses Daigo is when, during another earthquake, the dorm manager uses herself to protect a child. This has the dorm manager thinking marriage, and Daigo only furthers that notion by asking her out to talk about her opinion of younger men marrying older women. The dorm manager thus has Kuroko and company help her get all dressed up for the next time she goes to the orphanage, but when Daigo shows her the ring he’s going to propose with, he reveals that the woman he’s proposing to is actually the older principal of the orphanage. In the aftermath, the dorm manager returns to being her normal disciplinarian self.

For a good majority of the episode, I was actually pretty entertained by Kuroko’s antics since it made for good comedy. That’s why I wasn’t too thrilled by the more serious parts of the episode, especially the predictable way the romance part unfolded and how things returned back to normal by the end. It also irked me a little that they never gave a name to the dorm manager lady despite spending an entire episode on her. Probably the only worthwhile things to take away from this episode are the topics that it shared with last week’s episode, namely the earthquakes and the Child Errors, the latter of which felt sort of out of place when it was explicitly referenced this week. I’m guessing that those will come up again whenever these side character episodes end and the final arc starts, though it looks like next week will be just a maid themed episode.

  1. They should, really, just rename it Failgun because the fillers are awful 🙁
It started out brutal, then it got into the storyline and I couldn’t finish the episode
Someone I tweeted about the episode with lasted only 8 minutes into the episode
It’s a sad day for a promising series:(

  2. I would have preferred if they just waited for more manga material to be out instead of creating episodes like this. The manga is pretty good where it’s at right now. But I guess they didn’t want to wait too long after the airing of the Index series. It’s really too bad. 🙁

  3. I’m loving what they’re doing right now.

    1. It’s making people like you guys angry.
    2. It’s fleshing out something I like a bit more than the characters themselves. And that’s how Academy City works. Sure, it’s not the best glimpses of it all, but it’s what I like to see.

  4. Like Jayars said, surely you must have realized the Sisters Arc will not be animated. And even if it does get animated, it’ll end up as a half-baked effort, due to the arc still not yet finished in the manga.

While I agree they could have just ended the series at episode 13 after the Level Upper arc, this “filler” arc is not as bad as some people make out to be, mainly because this arc is written by none other than Index creator Kamachi Kazuma. (I will be constantly repeating and stressing this point to drill it in to some of your minds. ) And because of that, I find it quite enjoyable to watch, compared to the mundane Bleach fillers, where Kubotite has zero input.

And if fillers bother you guys so much, then just stay away and come back when the manga story resumes itself. That’s what I’m doing for Bleach right now.

Anyway, Pizza Hut not only supports the revolution, it now is responsible for recharging the railgun. XD

Poor Dorm Leader, I had a feeling her love will get unrequited. Nabatame Hitomi does a good job in conveying her expressions, from cold and scary to shy and flustered. Not that I really mind that we never know her real name, after all, we never knew the real names for Kyon and his sister, and it never stopped them from being popular. And if that’s not enough, how about Solid Snake?

Her love interest Daigo-sensei sounded familiar, turns out he’s voiced by Majima Junji – Takasu Ryuji in Toradora – briefly reuniting himself with Toradora’s director Nagai Tatsuyuki.

  5. The Dorm Supervisor needs a name! I like how she has a martial arts prowess that can take on ability users, even putting fear in Mikoto’s eyes. I bet she can kick Touma’s ass easily. Maybe she can use magic?
Seems like the story’s inching back to Kiyama’s kids with the flashbacks Mikoto’s having. Next episode seems like more fan-service, maid style!
Is Pizza Hut a savior of the anime industry? Maybe the pizza over there is better? Kind of like how Coca-Cola is much better in Mexico since they use different ingredients like actual brown sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup here in the States.
The earthquakes…could it have to do with Index and Touma?

  6. failgun?????? They should rename it as ‘J.C staff pandering to otakus once again by feeding them constant underdeveloped pre teens…………………gun’

Its long, but it portrays true feeling! Can ya feel it hulkamaniacs?

  7. @Kinny Riddle: Really? hahaha! If the author is doing these cannon fillers why the hell is not doing the sisters arc in the anime if it is already finished in the novels???
Thats just a crap marketing strategy to sell us a slice of life instead an adaptation.
    To aru kagaku no fillergun.

  8. @ Lero

To Aru Kagaku no Railgun is MANGA original. It’s her point of view with things not shown in the Index novels, like her reaction to finding out about the Sisters plan, the things she does when she finds out, her fight against ITEM, etc. It’s not even up to the point where Touma comes in which is why they can’t animate it yet.

  9. I think some are missing the point. the central idea is how Kuroko fails as a cupid 🙂
That’s why she’ll never win Misaka’s love. I know the main characters are the whole purpose of a series; but the supporting cast is really important. Even thought they are filler it can be consider canon because the material comes from the original creator. A good example is Kimi ni todoke, is great thanks to the secondary characters; the same goes here having just Biri biri blasting the city will be entretaining like for 4 episodes. Is balance issue they need to provide both developments simultaneously, that make more sense.

  10. Heh a pretty amusing filler. Although I prefer plot over fillers obviously, it can’t be helped since the original manga isn’t far enough. Imo this is a better alternative then coming up with a random original sisters arc. Meanwhile I’ll enjoy the manga as it comes out.

@Lero “Thats just a crap marketing strategy to sell us a slice of life instead an adaptation.”
They aren’t trying to sell YOU anything. The ones who they are trying to sell Railgun to probably are going to buy it, thus they will make what the otakus want. If you don’t like it then tough.

  11. @akani: Its the same author, the the events in Mikoto POV are going to end in the same way with the data from the remaining facilities transfered to new ones and Mikoto failing her goal to stop the experiment, even if the characters are changed.

@FlameStrike: I say that cuz sometimes I bought some original DVDs from niponland … now I don’t feel like I want to buy some DVDs.

It’s pretty simple. You don’t want the anime to cover what you haven’t published in manga form, so you whip up some side stories instead. If your primary income comes from books/manga, it’d be bad if those who watch the show lose interest as the manga plays catch up.

If the story is ending soon, authors might provide input on how it ends. Otherwise, it’s in their best interest to ask anime writers to do something different.

  13. I can’t remember the last time I had Pizza hut. Was so sick almost died. Nothing like real hand toss pizza instead of that pre-pre-pre made pizza hut junk. Notwithstanding there are thousands of people that eat there so if their money is good to keep anime running I’ll just close me eyes whenere the marketing stuff comes up. This is like super bowl ads crap. They are more expensive and colorful than the actual game. long live to marketing wizard may all burn in pizza 😛

    what!
  14. I love this episode, and I absolutely loved all the episodes before it. Be it anime originals, fillers or whatever you’d want to call it; I’m enjoying this series and nothing will change this sentiment. 🙂

That said, the development for these side-characters are interesting enough and keep things fun to watch. Hurray!

  15. I can see them developing the other character but this is getting kind of ridiculous. Who cares about the dorm manager at this point…. I mean I don’t even remember seeing her during the other episode. Next weeks episode should be the current episode since that is actually an important character.

  16. I haven’t had Pizza Hut in a long while, there is absolutely no sit-in places in the Bronx. Only the express variants and they don’t seem to make it the same way. They rarely have the good stuff Pizza Hut introduces every so often.
