「マゼランの奇策!はばまれた脱獄計画」 (Mazeran no Kisaku! Habamareta Datsugoku Sakusen)
“Magellan’s Scheme! The Jailbreak is Obstructed”

After this episode aired, I had heard there were some fillers coming up, so I thought this episode might have suggested such. However, no suggestion was made, and it seems that next week will continue the story. That’s always a good thing, right? Let’s hope fillers don’t pop up anytime soon, even though it seems unlikely.

Ah, the candlewax robot suit. Similar to the Pirate Docking 5, Luffy gets his own extra arms and legs to fight against Magellan’s poison. I think it’s supposed to be incredibly funny, but it only comes off to me as somewhat amusing and random. To be honest, his reactions are far more hilarious. On another note, with the way Magellan’s poison always makes a sizzling sound when hitting the ground, you’d think his poison would be acidic enough to eat through most things; however, Mr. 3’s wax is apparently good enough to stop it. But according to the preview, Magellan takes it up a notch and finally manages to eat through the wax.

On the other side, the others have made it out of Impel Down, but found all the warships to have sailed away. However, Jinbei comes to the rescue and rips out a door for a makeship boat. Buggy made a hilarious face here that I somehow did not capture, but he had some nice reaction faces in this episode overall, so I capped some of those. While some people may call Buggy’s ability to gain followers and surviving inevitable odds a sheer stroke of dumb luck, I feel that he may be just as good as Strawhat. Maybe there’s a will of Buggy surging within him, and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he made it to Raftel in the end. In a world where “Destiny” is popularly considered fact, maybe Buggy’s destiny is to stumble and screw around till the end. As Oda said before, Buggy was his favorite villain (might just be a will of Oda then, eh?).

Jinbei was the highlight of the episode, what with his rasengan style powers. As he was pulling it off, I thought to myself if Oda will ever explain random powers that seem to make no sense like Jinbei’s. Oda usually does, and it’s quite possible it’ll be explained when everyone gets to Fishman Island. It’s just interesting to know that everything can be reasonably explained by a logical explanation, with nothing just “pulled out of a hat”. Shounen usually strays into those territories, as it’s an easy card to play, but giving reason behind powers makes it all the more interesting. It’s always more epic when you know how something works when it’s pulled off than going “oh wow, a huge crazy spirit.. wait, where did it come from?” And then you spend the rest of the time wondering where that thing came from instead of enjoying it’s effects.

So it seems next week will have better animation again, as Luffy fights Magellan more seriously, but previews always choose the best parts to trick you with. As of right now, I have no recollection of what happens next, so it looks like I’ll be in suspense as well.

Couldn’t agree with you more Kiiragi 😛 That’s what usually happens in Bleach lol >_>.

In any case, any chance of one of you blogging Fairy Tail?

    1. I think it is explained pretty early in the series. I believe it was in the Arlong Park arc. Fishman generally have much more stronger bodies than humans and they get even more stronger in the sea. Maybe the anime didn’t show it properly, but I think he just used his crazy physical strength to make his own water currents or whatever.

Funny, I compared it to a kamehameha but Kiiragi’s comparison of a rasengan is better.

Now Bleach is a different story. I’m sure Kubo writes it while he’s high or drunk. Because the story is becoming a total trollfest.

I dunno, the last thing you want is it to become is like bleach, where characters go into indepth detail about how their abilities work to their enemies…

  3. Can’t wait for them to get to Marineford. BTW, is Marineford basically Marine HQ? Or is it an island where Marine HQ resides? And is Mariejoa a different island where the World Government base is?

    1. Yes, Marineford is Marine HQ. Marine HQ along with the Enies Lobby and Impel Down all spiral through a current and can only be accessed through the Gates of Justice. Mariejois is right beside the Marine HQ but it’s right above the Red Line [Remember, Fisher Tiger climbed the Red Line by himself and helped all the slave escape.]

  4. I think Jinbei’s powers could be easily explained by the use of haki, i mean… I don’t have the best memory around here, but if I’m not mistaken, until know all they’ve shown is that haki is some kind of inner power similar to dragon ball’s ki (but waay cooler XD)and that there seems to be at least one unique ramification of it that we know luffy possesses, so… maybe jinbei just concentrated a bit of haki on his hands and along with his enhanced abilities for being underwater he was capable of pulling that out!

I guess it makes sense in a way… and this can also be applied to Ivankov and his “winks” that are honestly more annoying and random than jinbei’s powers are! maybe he/she just shoots some haki energy or something while doing that…as lame as it sounds while i’m writing it xp hehehehe what do u think ?

    1. Buggy is a pretty funny guy. His snorts and epic poses make me crack up. His seiyuu is a pro!
I’m pretty sure we’ll be seeing Buggy at Raftel. And maybe at the pirate summit (if there ever will be one. Ace hinted it back in the Arabasta Arc)

  6. As someone who recently picked up One Piece again after so long of the 4kids ruining my first impression. I’m now on episode 70 currently and loving it.

I’m wondering about how many chapters is the Manga ahead of the Anime?

    1. Ok man, stop this stupidity, if you remember correctly, Crocodile was DEFEATED, NOT killed by Luffy in the Arabasta Arc, he was then arrested by the marines and taken to Impel Down and put in Lvl 6. -_- How can you not understand that? You’ve been saying the same thing for the past 3 eps. Go check out the One Piece wiki or google it. >_>

    2. Lmfao, I hesitated to put a crocodile snapshot this post because I knew you were going to post this again. Maybe I won’t put one next episode~

But it’s making me laugh for some reason.

  7. About the “pulled out of a hat” thing, I thinkt hat’s where it hurts to be an older reader/ewatcher of shounen.. Shounen is intended for young boys after all . meaning kids, which means that most of them’ll probably go “Oh, WOW!” Luffy-style after seeing stuff like this, whereas an older reader will go all “Oh, WO – wait, what!? How the hell did he do THAT!?”. In short, younger readers/watchers are more likely to enjoy the cool effects first and ask later (if at all), whereas it’s the opposite with older readers. Oda may well put in some explaination on how fishmen’s powers like this works later though indeed.

      1. Probably based on the fact that it’s horrible, childish, overly cartoony. Plus, it’s hard to maintain street cred when an anime airs on Fox’s Saturday morning cartoons…

  8. I can’t believe you stopped covering Hakuouki, but you picked up this trash. What are we, 12? Why, out of all the terrible anime released, would you go below the shitty standard set by them and pick One Piece? Ugh! What’s happened to RC?

  9. Oh man, I just wanted to thank you for blogging this! It totally made my day when I visited this site again and saw that. I been a fan of One Piece for heck of a long time but I never really found sites blogging each episode. So, it’s really exciting seeing that both the episode and the manga chapter will be summarized by you! Thanks so much again!
