Summary:
Yammy is pissed off after Ulquiorra is defeated, and takes out his anger on Rukia, Chad and Renji. He releases his resurreccion, Ira, which reveals his true number, zero. Yammy’s huge size and strength easily overpowers all of their attacks and he prepares to fire a cero at them. In the fake Karakura town, the captains are having trouble against the top three Espada. Harribel reveals herself to be the #3 espada and Hitsugaya is forced to stay on the defensive against her even after releasing his bankai. She releases her ressurreccion, Tiburon, and seemingly slices off one of Hitsugaya’s wings; however he later reveals this to be an illusion. Shunsui and Stark continue their fight and seem evenly matched in swordplay, though the latter manages to land a cut in. On the side, Soifon and Omaeda aren’t doing well against Baraggan, and she reveals that their power limiters have already been removed.

Impressions:
I don’t think Yammy is really the “best” Espada; perhaps zero is just a way to signify that his potential power level is the highest of the Espada. It seems he just relies on brute strength and an extremely tough hierro to overwhelm his enemies (or prey). Without much of a brain, he wouldn’t stand a chance against the majority of opponents near his power level. And if looking at other series gives any clue, big powerful but dull characters usually don’t last too long. No wonder Ulquiorra didn’t consider him too important.

As for the protagonists, shikai and bankai have really become cheapened in value. Most of the powers can’t hurt the caliber of enemies in recent battles. Understandably, this is an inevitable trend in the genre, especially as the series progresses for several years, but it’s still annoying seeing the likes of Hitsugaya and Renji forced to release their bankai’s in most fights, but not being able to do significant damage with them. Bankai supposedly increases the wielder’s power by five to ten times, and used to be the pinnacle of shinigami achievement. At this point, power levels seem to vary so widely that often releasing bankai doesn’t do anything significant (of course, the strongest shinigami are a different story). Standards sure rise quickly in such a competitive world.

Looking at the three Espada, Stark seems to most interesting one to me. His powerful but cool demeanor compares nicely with Shunsui’s, and it would be cool to see them release more powerful abilities against each other. Harribel (yes they did do some censorship, though a lot of cleavage is still visible) seems like a straightforward character, though I laughed at her intention to go after Yamamoto; I seriously doubt she could do much against him, but fire vs. water is an interesting prospect at least. As for Hitsugaya, I’m very unimpressed with him (as I mentioned above about bankai), and I know there are a lot of his anti-fans out there. However, he uses his brain to fight, so I’m not counting out his abilities to pull off something effective. Aizen is seriously wasting his time here though, it shouldn’t be a problem to quickly advance his plans with his overpowered abilities instead of messing around with subordinates. It’s like… fighting just for the sake of showing off different characters and abilities.

Note: I’ll be going to Japan so the next few posts may be delayed.

  1. i think the animation quality next week will be as same as ichigo vs ulquiorra’s fight! pierrot studio surely had tough times today because epic fights like from bleach and pain vs naruto must have cool fights and audiences have high expectations!

  2. Poor renji. He annoyes the shit out of me with his weak weak powers. Of all the bankai’s i’ve seen his too often it seems. Yes baboon cannon it shoots a laser. Though this episode had some sort of constricting bone stuff, which was undeniably a nice surprise. Still that bankai has expired it’s lasting date.

    1. he was pulling off that constricting bone stuff back in the day… (i think against the bount but would have to wast a day researching it to know). i’m hopping for a rengi upgrade though something similar to the valley of swords that his captain uses… although there’s room for all of them to level up, chad could get a full suit or rukia could achieve banki. i can’t see them winning at this level as they’ve just combined all there most powerful attacks and yammie brushed it off with his reitsu… but who knows, except all you smug manga readers, i’m just glag bleach is back to form

  3. Well great episode anyway, been anticipating it for some time…

WAIT. Did anyone here expect Higa Zekko when Renji’s Bankai has been “broken” by Yami? I expected that man, and it came up to be ****…

The animation’s just okay, more to happen next week, so I’m just looking forward. The sad thing is why they didn’t exaggerate (in time) for Harribel’s release? Really…

  4. I felt the whole episode was pretty much alot about nothing, all the fights seemed to set up for next week. Aside from Yammy’s being revealed to be 0 nothing else really happened.

  5. Now that my most anticipated duel is done, I wonder what’s next to look forward to…. Though I’ll still read the manga.

Again I’ll be relying on this blog if any interesting fight scenes pop up like Hisagi’s fight. The part of the manga was so so but the choreography of the fight was amazing. Really hoping for a sleeper hit like that one.

In case you’ve forgotten, Aizen is currently trapped behind a wall of fire, so that would explain why he couldn’t do anything.

Also, I would put Yammy’s power in between Harribel and Ulquiorra.

And finally, THEY’RE STILL DOING THAT RANDOM JUMPING BETWEEN SCENES AT THE BEGINNING GOD DAMMIT.

    1. I did not forget; no way that wall of fire could keep Aizen in if he seriously wanted to get out.
I mean I wonder why Yamamoto didn’t just attack him with the wall of fire, if it’s powerful enough to block him, it could probably hurt him

  7. Yammy is such a freak. I just hope Byakuya,Kenpachi and Mayuri were able to take him down. So many powerful captains have already fallen and these three are no exception to defeat.

  8. I also thought that Yammy is probably not the strongest Espada. From what it looks like, he’s not even a Vasto Lorde (or he just looks like an Adjuchas) and besides brute strength, he actually doesn’t have any real special or unique skills. I think that the 0 number Aizen slapped on him is a bluff to make Yammy think that he’s the strongest, and that the 10 he wears when he’s not in his release is to motivate the others (since he flat out sucks without his release).

  9. Damn, I hate that censorship. Harribel was almost topless in her released form in the manga. I’d have loved to see that animated. 😛

ps. I also hate how Dattebayo keeps changing the way they translate attack names and such. I mean sometimes it’s Hihou Zabimaru/Getsuga Tensho but I’ve also seen Baboon King Zabimaru/Heaven Shocking Lunar Fang. Kinda annoying how they can’t keep it consistent.

  10. @jallu: “The major changes involve translating all Japanese techniques into English. Techniques in other languages will be left in their original languages,” is what Dattebayo announced last year. But you don’t have to worry about consistency! Soon you’ll have the consistency of Crunchyroll subs instead of DB subs!

  11. i just love in this episode how everyone is panting while fighting their opponents, and it was like a class system kyorok (i have no clue how to spell his name) unreleased vs #1, soifon shiki vs #2, toshiro bankai vs #3

    Sigh
  12. It has always annoyed me how many characters are running around. Especially in bleach where nothing changes…EVER. The hollows come and go but the shinigami remain the same as they were first introduced, there is no character development at all anymore. Plus these fights really make the shinigami look bad. All the most the espada were created by Aizen over the past few months that he defected in manga time. Yet they are all stronger than the shinigami that have been training and fighting each other for hundreds upon hundreds of years. Once this is all over I really hope Yamamoto rethinks his policies on Hollowification seeing as how Ichigo can pwn most the captains with ease with his mask. Proof,Have fun in ropongi and akihabara those were my old hangout spots back when dinosaurs ruled the earth lol.

Quoted for its truth across all of shonen manga. Just once I’d love a series that doesn’t do this.

Fortunately we got through a lot of bad scenes in this episode, and I’m glad we didn’t get that cliffhanger from the manga where they tricked us into thinking that Hitsugaya might actually die. As a character I don’t mind him, what I dislike is that he’s given such prominence and we’re told how good he is when we usually don’t see much to back it up. As for Yammy, A. that wasn’t a good twist and B. as it turns out he’s still completely ineffectual many chapters later. Seriously, as late as chapter 405 (the latest I’ve read so far) he hasn’t had any actual impact on the plot. You could remove him, Chad and Renji and absolutely nothing would be changed.

  14. Unlike the first FMA series, this one is following the manga almost exactly. If they redid it, they’d actually be removing some of the poorer twists and ideas, not following it more faithfully (which for FMA couldn’t be avoided and was done masterfully). As for filler, it can’t be helped. In the manga they’ve been dragging it out with inconclusive fight scenes for a while now. Despite the best efforts of the animators, those fight scenes go by pretty quickly in the anime. They’re already up to chapter 356, and I imagine that they’ll get 10-15 more episodes before they run out of material.
