Episode 9

「ハナムプトラ」 (Hanamuputora)
“The Runny”

There’s a whole mess of confusion within me from watching this half. Is it the urge to be disgusted from an episode devoted to boogers? That said boogers are so abundant, and shooting everywhere, or that they look exactly like Stocking’s sweets? How about that Stocking eats said sweets, but soon eats those boogers too, but the cognitive dissonance of seeing it still as a sweet, but knowing it’s a booger just rips the mind apart?

Finger banging your nose, while might be fun, is the main reason people have begun picking their nose, though of course with the help of some good ol’ Ghoul influence. Tomokazu Sugita guests as Oscar H. Genius, this part’s Ghoul, who figuratively is a booger himself, resulting from someone who died in his boogers (or something like that). Having recently re-watched bits of Kanon, whom Sugita plays the protagonist of, more dissonance occurred, as I wasn’t sure what to feel from seeing him take part in the mutual nose banging with Panty. It’s sort of indescribable. Ayu, my condolences.

As if the question wasn’t already planted into my mind since Panty started moaning at an increased rate due to fingers in her nasal cavity, she asks the audience which hole is best, as if to force you to retrospect over the episode, which is ironically the last thing anyone would do for this particular 11 minute booger porn. But you know what? I thought about it anyways, because that’s my problem, thinking too much. Counting the nostrils, there would be five holes, an additional two to the already standardized three. Personally I’d prefer the lower holes, because (warning, incoming immature insecure penis joke) obviously I can’t fit into nostrils. But if I could, would I? Despite the biological fact that there are no pleasure sensors in there, why not? Oh, but with consent of course. (maybe)

Fun fact: Sneezing causes pretty much the same exertion force and contractions in your body as ejaculating does. They also both happen to shoot things out, although a sneeze travels much faster due to less mass being ejected. So the moon sneezing at the end as if it just came, makes sense. If you ever experience euphoria from sneezing, you may not be alone. But you might be a pervert.

Episode 10

「ヴォミッティング・ポイント」 (Vomittingu Pointo)
“Vomiting Point”

“Holy shit.”

I have a feeling “cognitive dissonance” was a theme this week, with clashing styles of art that somehow feels akin to Yuasa Masaaki’s works. The depressing atmosphere, troubling reality, and your not so great to look at faces, reminds me of something to the likes of Mind Game. I had previously thought it was more similar to Satoshi Kon, but his art style is nowhere near the same. Can’t say anything about directorial wise.

For the people that thought this part was slow, it’s most likely because this kind of storytelling is usually aimed towards adults. But oh look, Panty and Stocking is an adult show. It’s exactly the same reason shows like Mad Men couldn’t possibly appeal to kids. To the inexperienced teenager or younger, trapped in their bubble of safety and infallible fantasies (But I don’t blame them, because that’s the best thing about youth), how could they possibly understand the troubles of an old man stuck in a shitty job, taking shit from people, just so he can hold onto the job and provide for his family? These values completely fly over their heads, and the only thing they’re feeling is “why the hell isn’t this going anywhere?” And perhaps this was not only a statement for Kon (or hell, a revealing take on the stressful cycle of businessmen in Japan), but more of a display of the potential in the fantastic medium that is anime, and when at its prime, can truly be considered an art form. Gainax also just likes to show off.

Seriousness aside, the obvious thing to have been looking forward to in this part was when the angels appear, and I had been anticipating a style change for them as well. Had they been drawn in a similar style, as well as beautified compared to everyone else, some extra impact might have been felt. Instead, we get their usual style, which was quite weird, but it worked just as well. The best part? The autographs left behind. Nine half-sodes of the angels having personalities that would make a viking blush, and now we see a showing of some compassion. It might seem like it’s trivial, and it will be if it doesn’t appear again, but for just this moment, their characters become human.

Warning: These posts are exaggeratedly written for entertainment purposes only (actually, really just the first half). They are written with no afterthought. Do not take these words as a representative of the writer (except the second half). To get the best experience, read right after watching to keep the same air of ridiculousness the show provides. That is all.

  1. Anything dealing with vomit of this magnitude in anime is hilarious. Also I was kind of expecting something like a “In Memory of” message at the end in regards to Satoshi Kon.

  2. Why is everyone saying this style is like Kon’s? The characters in his films were not drawn that way at all! They were much more on-model and consistent, MUCH more detailed to the point where they included all their eyelashes, much less cartoonish, more subtle, more fluid… I DO NOT see the resemblance!

    1. My slip actually, I was thinking Mind Game was one of Satoshi Kon’s works, but the art style of this second part is more similar to Yuasa Masaaki’s stuff, like Kaiba and the given example Mind Game.
Pretty gigantic fail on my part, really. Post will be updated to reflect on this.

  4. I always wondered what anime characters would look like if they appeared in real-life. 😀 Would you freak out if you saw Panty and Stocking on the street in front of you? Or in your bedroom? xD (Or any other anime character?)

  5. Wow, that first half was terrible. I’m not going to bother finishing the rest of the post and I’m going to take that as a representative of the writer character.

Jokes on the side, the first half was something that I’d expect from an Adult Swim show. Not exactly a good thing, but I’m finding my self liking the second half more of each episode.
