Wow, did Fishman Island deliver on beauties or what? I was half expecting things to turn wrong again for Sanji, but his depiction of Fishman Island’s mermaids was spot on. Naturally, the island became much more interesting as the Strawhats broke in, with Oda doing his usual “introducing a lot of unique things that only pertain to this island.”

It’s pretty cool how in Fishman Island, land and sea are no longer trapped within their gravitational places, with air bubbles in the sea, and “water roads” traveling in the sky. I can’t help but wonder why air is even needed in Fishman Island (assuming that Oda’s mermaids can breathe underwater), except that maybe it’s just to accommodate humans. I suppose air is a necessity for things like cooking, since even the houses, like Keimi’s, are half air half water. Speaking of Keimi, after two years… she looks pretty much the same. In fact, I forgot what she even looked like, so I had to go see what she was like pre-time-skip. The only thing that changed was her hairstyle, which I like a lot more, and it does makes her look older.

Meanwhile, Caribou is found afloat by some mermaids, and while we might not really care if Caribou just disappeared from the story, there are obviously some plans in store for him. An antagonist with higher power also takes appearance, and could quite possibly be the guy to beat at the end of this arc. Since the crew wants to head over to Fishman District to thank Hachi, it looks like those fishmen won’t have too much trouble bringing them to the “boss.”

While I said last week that going to Fishman Island was like suicide, it’s really only the fishmen that hate humans. The mermaids and other talking animals that may or may not appear don’t seem to mind. That also begs the question, are the only other men on this island fishmen? Oda should get some mermen up in there to enjoy the ladies! If not, then that really sucks for the mermaids (if you know what I mean).

But seriously, if the fishmen weren’t so evil, I’d really love to take my next vacation at Fishman Island…

    1. The Strawhats always (temporarily) split up like this. Most of the stories are structured like a tournament arc, with everybody taking on their respective opponents in one-on-one or occasional team fights. Plus, you get the added bonus of seeing how certain Strawhats play off one another, like Robin and Franky or Robin and Chopper in Thriller Bark.

Ahaha, made my day 😀 Ah just kidding, you’re absolutely right. Who knows, maybe there’ll be introduced some hybrid later with a men as the father and mermaid as the mother. I’d definitely like to spend my vacation there too 🙂

But poor Sanji, the whole mermaid district is overkill for him!^^ I’m wondering what happened to the Flying Dutchman – I have the feeling, that those guys aren’t so bad and will turn up again sooner or later (to help?). For the meantime, next OP artbook with mermaids please!^_^

  2. Well, we know that mermen exist(it was on the auction list back on shapondy)but like Keimi said, this is just a spot for mermaids to hang around, so of course there are only girls here.(though i wonder why they let male(humans) in there just like that)

I think Keimi actually changed a lot. She got a little taller, the hair makes her a bit more grown up too and her warderope of course(which i hate now, i want her t-shirt look back T_T)

  3. You choose that mermaid over the one with the Headphones? well… that one was my second pick.

Mermen? you mean Fishmen right? Merfolk =/= Fishmen.

I wonder if Jinbe is doing okay.

  4. Half expected you to try and use Sanji’s river of tears face when he first saw all the mermaids together. His *This is All Blue!!* yell had me on the floor laughing. Mostly because I had forgotten Sanji’s main dream and it was hilarious to be reminded of it here.

    1. Yeah.. I should’ve gotten his face and wrote as the title, “A Man’s Dream is Realized.”
Sometimes the composition just isn’t right. Too much dialogue in OP to crop stuff sometimes. While great, also a curse, at least for imaging. :]
