It’s… TIME! Time to look back at 2010 that is, so I’d like to present the Fifth Annual Reader’s Choice Poll.

Similar to last year, there are two polls for you to vote on — one for regularly broadcast series and another for OVA/movies. The subtle change is the number of votes has increased from three to five for series and one to three for OVA/movies to further diversify results so they aren’t heavily skewed. With 98 series and 71 OVA/movies to choose from, we’re now asking for your top five and top three of 2010 respectively.

The criteria for a regular broadcast anime to be included is that it had to have been a TV series that finished airing in 2010. The general idea here is that you can’t really judge a series until it’s over, so shows such as STAR DRIVER and To Aru Majutsu no Index II will appear in next year’s poll. For OVA/movies, it has to have been released on DVD/BD in 2010 to qualify, ensuring that viewers outside of Japan have had a chance to watch it. This mostly pertains to theatrical offerings. I’ve loosened the requirement on being complete though, which is why you see Gundam Unicorn episodes one/two and Break Blade movies one/two included in the list as single entries.

As far as I’m aware, the anime series list is complete. The OVA/movie is purposely less so since there are a lot of really niche OVAs that aren’t really worth considering. However, if you feel there’s something the deserves consideration, please send me an e-mail and I’ll add it. Otherwise, you are welcome to vote for it in the Others option. Let the voting begin!

Note: The polls will close on Sunday, January 2nd at 8:00 AM GMT. Results will be posted in the upcoming Best of Anime 2010 post.

Polls are now closed. Thank you for taking the time to vote.

  1. although i wanted more votes i guess i can only choose 5 for Best Anime & 3 Ova.

Well it was a good year and all the good and bad anime came out like a drama. It was also good making comments and reading others reaction as well. それは楽しい

  2. I think there was some great stuff in the movies and OVA category this year, but honestly I couldn’t even find 5 series from 2010 that I would even recommend. Compared to the last few years, I think anime TV was pretty weak this year.

Reader’s Choice? Best of 2010? I think FMA will walk away with it.

  3. This was slightly easier than previous years, I voted for the series that didn’t leave a bad afterthought when they aired the finale for me. A lot of great shows that started with potential but ended mediocre made me rethink if they deserve being called the best. Now, if there was a best ep of the year; that’ll be crazy hard for me to say. 🙂

  4. Yay! I’ve been waiting on this. Its always interesting to see what the anime public in general thinks…..esp. since my own picks are seldom on the top. However, entertainment is in the eye of the beholder. Thanks for getting this rolling!

  5. My own opinion
    i) K-ON!! <- best in its class
ii)Angel Beats <- complex and well done. Needs thinking though
iii) Ika Musume <- relaxing, better integrated than similar shows like Lucky Star
iv) Working <- Enjoyable but not as funny as Ika Musume
    v) Occult Academy <- Nice twisting (White Witch vs Black Witch!) but got bogged down in the middle

Looking at that i look like a FF4's "moe man". Ok bad jokes aside, a lot of the anime had problems. Arakawa was funny but let down by the ending. Densetsu failed to condense well. Gintama lost a lot of steam. Highschool failed to do fanservice well. Kiddy failed to live up to its predecessor (who had its own problems). And those were not even as ugh as stuff like Dance. There were others that were ok but just not as good

  6. Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu is going to win the OVA/movie poll by a landslide. I’m guessing FMA:B will probably top the regular series.

It’s pretty hard to only choose 5 from the list of series, there are a lot of shows that are somewhat underappreciated like RAINBOW, Cross Game and Kuragehime which deserve votes really.

    duh
  7. As for the anime series, I’ve voted for (not in any particular order):
    – Angel Beats
    – Durarara!!
    – Shiki
    – Kaichou wa Maid-sama
    – To Aru Kagaku no Railguin

    For the OVA/movies:
    – Darker Than Black Gaiden
    – Summer Wars
    – Haruhi Suzumiya no Shoushitsu

    Ghostalker
  8. TV: Angel Beats, Cross Game, Major 6th season, Ika Musume, Working! OVA/movie: Break Blade, Evaneglion 2.22, Suzumiya Haruhi. I still have to watch some movies and OVAs. I don’t know why but I just don’t get motivated to watch OVA and Movies. LOL.

  9. 1. Shiki – By far the best show this year. Seriously blows everything else to smithereens
    2. GIANT KILLING – Almost perfection of its Genre
    3. K-0N!! – Again a Show that knows its limitations and doesn’t try to be something it’s not
    4. Shinryaku! Ika Musume – Had some seriously funny shorts
    5. Kobato. – I really loved this show for no reason

    Worst Shows (that I watched)
    1. Angel Beats – Overhyped piece of turd
    2. Highschool of the dead – Bullet tits
    3. OreImo – Wins the award for most painfully cringe-worthy show ever.

  10. It’s been a very, very disappointing year for anime, imho.

    Anyways,

House of 5 Leaves, Tatami Galaxy, Working, Ika Musume, SoreMachi. Special mention goes to Higepiyo (watch it!!)
Was Spice & Wolf II this year or last? If it was this year, it would replace Tatami Galaxy for me.

Not sure about OVA’s…. Break Blade, Kure-nai and Black Lagoon

Seriously crap year!! There was no equivalent to a Mushishi, Baccano (no, Durarara pales in comparison), Kaiba, Kemonozume, Gankutsu Ou or Mouryou no Hako.

    Litho
  11. Noticed Aki Sora wasn’t on the list, maybe because it is borderline hentai (it probably would be hentai).

When voting, readers choice – favorite means what I like but some of the series I like are definitely not the best anime I’ve seen (plot, character, realism, story telling etc) e.g HOTD I always love the end of the world premise always interesting but ye in terms of looking at it as a piece of literature it wouldn’t eve compare to something like Samurai X OVA’s

–> demanding another poll for best made series

    crazystudyguy
  12. No!!!! 5!! darn it there are a lot of good animes!

wanted to vote for Hyakka Ryouran, Ika Musume, PSG, Yosuga no Sora and B Gata H Kei …….
well they will be in my runner up list.

    voted for
    1. Angel Beats
    2. Amagami SS
    3. Seitokai Yakuindomo
    4. Sora no otoshimono forte
    5. Baka to Test to Shokanju

from my list you can tell i mostly like comedy and a litte romance/drama

    karnos
  13. that was so difficult…

    TV:
    FMA Brotherhood
    Cross Game
    Denyuuden
    Rainbow
    Sora no Woto

    Movie/OVA:
    Macross Frontier
    Evangelion
    SuzuHaru

    honorable mentions:
    Ookiku Furukabutte 2nd Season
    Nodame Cantabile Finale
    Kobato
    Angel Beats
    Kuragehime
    Shiki
    Otome Youkai Zakuro
    K-ON!!

    Mi-Mi-Mikuru
  14. Movie/OVA category was easy enough for me, as I’ve only watched 3 this year. lol Though Evangelion was technically last year as I saw that in a cinema, the other 2 being The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi and Bungaku Shoujo.

For TV series, I find it very difficult to choose. Eventually my Type B Otaku preference for “moe-shit” and slice-of-life prevails over my Type A Otaku ones of great story-telling and awesome action, but only just.

(I actually resent this clear division of otakus into Types A and B, I personally am one of the rare hybrids that have preference for the moe-shit and good story telling at the same time. )

    (In no particular order)
    K-ON!!
    Angel Beats
    OreImo
    Railgun
    Working!

Coming close (again in no order):
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (Nothing against Type A anime, I’m so sorry that I can choose only 5, or this will definitely be in)
    Seitokai no Yakuin-domo
    Kaichou wa Maid-sama!
    Nodame Cantabile Finale
    Strike Witches 2

    Kinny Riddle
  15. My 5 Series Picks: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Katanagatari, Kuragehime, Saraiya Goyou, Shiki

My 3 Movie/OVA Picks: Break Blade, Darker than BLACK Gaiden, Summer Wars

A lot of good stuff this year. It was hard to pick.

    kazukifafner
  16. I cant believe some people are voting for generic anime like Heroman and skipping over pretty awesome original works like RAINBOW: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin or Katanagatari but that’s just my opinion…..

    omnikloud
  17. Hmmm. This was actually a bit harder than I thought.

    TV
    HoTD
    Panty Stocking
    Amagami
    Katanagatari
    Shiki

OVA/Movie (much easier than I thought), I might have put down the Haruhi movie but I haven’t seen it yet.
    Macross F
    Evangelion
    xxxHolic Rou

  18. this is gonna be so hard!

    but for tv

    1. Durarara for its vast cast and how everything connects+always leaves you wanting more at the end of each ep
    2. Seitokai Yakuindomo for its hilarity and quirky characters+interactions
    3. Working!! exactly the same reason as seitokai, i just couldnt choose
    4. Katanagatari because i loved the production company and also director no matter some of the things that he overuses. and it was different in both how it was only broadcasted once a month but longer, and the art styles
    5. Hakuouki season 1 and 2 i just couldnt step away from my bishounens and even though it wasnt the same artstyle as the original game, its still kazuki yones character designs<3

some honorable mentions for me that had me rethinking for sure
Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wakke Janai just cause it was funny with its quirks along with bakatest, ikamusume.
i really loved kuragehime (hope it gets a second season) same with ookamai+7friends.

    *chu
  19. Honestly, I’m more interested in what the bloggers will choose. I know great animes like Rainbow and Kimi ni Todoke will get pushed down even though they are clearly two of the best couple that aired.

I just hope the good ones aren’t overshadowed/left in the dark because they aired early and not late.

    Dawn
  20. Shows:
    – Yosuga no Sora
    – Durarara!!
    – Sora no Otoshimono: Forte
    – Working!!
    – Angel Beats!

    OVA/Films:
    – Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu
    – Darker than BLACK: Gaiden
    – Black Rock Shooter

  21. I based most of my choices on enjoyment.I never watched most of the anime on the list though, most were shit anyway even based off the trailers. There was probably only 10 ,or less, decent anime this year.As for the OVAs and movies,I’ve only watched the Kurenai OVA and Summer Wars, so no competition there.

    GodKnows
  22. Oh dear, if Summer Wars doesn’t get a decent spot among OVAs/Movies I might loose all faith in humanity.

I also couldn’t resist voting for Ookiku Furikabutte S2 despite how unpopular it is over here, ahaha…
Other than that, Kuragehime, Baka Test, Working!!, and OreImo. Durarara!! and Tatami Galaxy almost made it on.

    Bee
  23. TV: Angel Beats, Heroman, Seitokai Yakuindomo, Seikimatsu Occult Gakuen, Kuragehime
Movie: Gundam Unicorn, Haruhi Movie, Bungaku Shoujo

    So many good OVAs and movies this year. ;A;
And many good TV series too.

    Irational Promise
  24. Voted for
    Angel Beats!
    Yosuga no Sora
    Katangatari
The Legendary Legend of the Legendary Heroes of the Legend
and Ichiban Ushiro Dai maou because I forgot that FMA is an option.

    OVA/Movies
    Unlimited Blade Works
    Awakening the Trailblazers
    Lagann-Hen

    Suppa Tenko
  25. ohhh 5 choiches thats 10 to many 🙂

I have watch many anime this year for the first time and i like it gheghe.
I like more the romantic anime because its good to watch before i go to sleep.
But also the comedy anime is very good i have laught many times zo hard that i thought i was going to dieed hihi.
But i keep watching anime and i looking forward to the nieuwe year with lots of new anime.

    NL_Den'86
  26. egads it was hard to choose for the ova. Finally went with Eve no Jikan, Haruhi, and Summer Wars! *yeesh almost forgot Summer Wars.

Anime: Angel Beats, Tegami Bachi, FMA:Brotherhood, Kaichou ha Maid-sama and Kimi ni todoke. ^_^ all series I adored. Very much looking forward to the results.

    Kumakaori
  27. There’s a new Taiho Shichauzo movie? I searched all over for it, but only found info regarding the 1999 movie. No new episodes or OVA since 2008. Is the entry a mistake or is there really a new movie that I don’t know about?

    ApertureScientist
  28. Angel Beats!
    Durarara!!
    Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
    K-ON!!
Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai

Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance
    Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu
    Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Lagann-hen

    Wow this is really hard…

    Kopi
  29. FMA
    K-On!!
    OreImo
    Sora no Woto
    amagami

    summer wars
    Eva
    Haruhi

tough choices on the shows. I wanted to vote for shiki and bakatest, but I tried to picture what order I would watch these shows in if I had an episode of all of them

    aubrey
  30. Durarara!!
    Ika Musume
    Rainbow
Uragiri wa Boku no Namae wo Shitteiru
    Katanagatari.

I followed many others shows this year, some which I think are almost as good as these ones, like Angel Beats!, Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu, Arakawa and Shiki and etc… but these are the ones I enjoyed the most. It was a very hard choice. Makes me remember about how people bitched everywhere saying winter/spring/fall 2010 would suck, you never know until it’s over.

Voted for Break Blade, Yozakura Quartet and Unlimited Blade Works in the ova section.

There’s many things I still haven’t watched yet like Evangelion and Bungaku Shoujo but I don’t think it would affect my choice anyway. Yozakura Quartet is like one of the best things I saw this year all media confounded. I may be a huge Kara no Kyoukai fan, but I don’t know anything about Fate/Stay Night and yet the movie really entertained me. For Break Blade well, I’m a huge fan of it since I discovered the manga.

    Rockmanshii
  31. Argh, you philistines. You’re all forgetting Gintama.

    For animu:
    – Gintama
    – Kaichou wa Maid-Sama!
    – Katanagatari
    – FMA: Brotherhood
    – Sengoku BASARA Two

    OVA/ Movies
    – Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu
    – One Piece: Strong World

    kfrooster
  32. The TV choices were easy for me, but the Movie/OVA were a lot harder considering how many good movies/OVAs there were this past year. I think top 10/top 6 would have been nice to have though (and it would have made it alot easier for me). 😛

    Gummi
  33. My top 5 favorite series for 2010:

1 – Legend of Legendary Heroes
    2 – Durarara!!
    3 – Kimi ni Todoke
4 – Baka to Test to Shokanju
    5 – Shiki

I really wanted to include Kobato, Angel Beats, Kaicho wa Maid sama, and that recent Squid Girl show but eventually decided on the other series.

    ryopi
  34. Anime in no order:
    >– Fullmetal Alchemist:Brotherhood
    >– Durarara!!
    >– High school of the Dead
    >–
    >–

    Movies:
    >– Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu
    >– Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Lagann-hen
    >– Fate Stay Night: Unlimited Bladeworks

Also wanted to add first movie of Eden of the East, and Summer Wars.

    Placinta
  35. I only picked the ones I had watched with subs. The other ones I wanted to watch aren’t out yet and it would have been tough to choose from all of them put together. This year was the best for best animes. Go 2010! (I only have less than 5 anime to look forward to next year.) There should also be a best anime music poll as well IMO.

    random viewer
  36. TV
1-FMA: Brotherhood -> with justice the anime of the year. 10/10

2-Kimi ni todoke -> a pleasure to watch and nice soundtrack 8/10
3-Kobato -> after so many years i recognized clamp 7,5/10
    4-Shugo Chara season 1 (2 is shit) 7/10
    5-Yumeiro Patissiere 7/10

Also liked Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt and Kaichou wa Maid-Sama.
    Movies
    Evangelion
    Fate

    Hikaru
  37. That was an hard choice… Of course, I had no doubts on Durarara: the very best anime of the year in my opinion, and I would be of that opinion even if we considered the series that only ENDED in 2010 (like FMA). I also voted for FMA Brotherhood, which was pretty epic, but not much of a surprise, considering how good the whole franchise is. Arakawa Under the Bridge and its sequel gave me some damn loud laughs, it took nonsense comedy in anime to a whole new level. Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai was very refreshing in many ways, and that’s why it’s on my list. Finally, Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru was a hilarious, fun-to-view slice of life I couldn’t not vote for. I purpotedly didn’t vote for other series like Gintama, because I feel they’ll have their fair bit of glory, and I think shorter and less popular series (i.e. SoreMachi) should have a chance too.

    lorenzo
  38. SO hard to choose. I wanted to put Angel Beats up there so bad. But it was the OVA that won me over again, this time.

    TV
    1.) Kimi ni Todoke
    2.) Seitokai Yakuindomo
    3.) Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru
    4.) WORKING!
    5.) Shinryaku! Ika Musume!

    OVA
    1.) Angel Beats! OVA
    2.) Kiss x Sis OVA (3-4)
    3.) Koi de Oshigoto

  39. TV
    1) FMA
    2) Katanagatari
    3) Panty & Stocking
    4) Kimi ni Todoke
    5) Mitsudomoe

    MOVIES
    1) Disappearance
    2) Eva 2.22
    3) Lagann-Hen

Some other good ones include: Amagami, Baka Test, DRR, and Sora no Otoshimono. The UBW movie is also worth mentioning.

    Human
  40. I just picked for the romance/action titles:
(TV) – Angel Beats!, Kaichou wa Maid-sama!, Kimi ni Todoke, Inuyasha Kanketsu-hen, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
(OVA) – Angel Beats! OVA, xxxHOLiC Rou, Macross Frontier: Itsuwari no Utahime
I look forward to seeing the results.

    Rika
  41. Sorta unfair to put the movie for Gundam 00 on there, since, unless we had to good fortune of going to Japan, going to see it in a theatre, and know Japanese, we couldn’t possibly have seen it outside of crappy camrips.

Kind of a crappy year, but the Macross Frontier and Gurren Lagann movie nearly makes up for everything.

I hope next year provides new SERIES rather than movies though…

    yanipheonu
  42. There were shows that ought to be admitted into the Anime Hall of Fame, should there be one, like Tatamy Galaxy and Katanagatari.
There were shows that rank highly above average in their respective categories in terms of quality. FMA, Kimi ni Todoke, RAINBOW, House of 5 Leaves, Shiki, GIANT KILLING and K-On!! are good examples of this.
There were also other shows that, despite not being brilliant, provided very solid moments of entertainment, like Angel Beats!, Working!!, Kuragehime, Shinryaku! Ika Musume and Durarara!!.
I am obliged to conclude that this was a very decent year for anime.

    Lord4Tune
  43. 1st : FMA Brotherhood, it doesn’t have any equal opponent
2nd : Durararararararara! for so many main characters, how it was generally made, just loved it
3rd : Amagami SS, so many kawaii girls in one anime and all of them have their own arc, Sae’s outfit in cinema was incredible 🙂
4th : Kuroshitsuji II, liked how it ended, quite short, but it’s still very good
5th : Angel Beats, I have all music from this anime, it’s awesome, it also had well thought story

Sooo, there are other anime which I liked, but well, Kimi ni Todoke will have a 2nd season, Nodame Cantabile Finale was generally good, but sth was lacking (atmosphere?), Yosuga no Sora would be my 8-9th choice, pretty uncommon one.

    As for Ovas/Movies :
1st : F/SN:UBW, loved the game, loved the anime, loved the movie, waiting for Heavens Feel animation 🙂
    2nd : Haruhi, doesn’t need to explain 🙂
3rd : DtB Gaiden, only 4 episodes, but everything was explained

    That’s all from me 🙂

    struuud
  44. 5 and 3 are not even close to enough for me to pick, so many good one this yr.

    1. Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu (The Legend of the Legendary Heroes) – has to be my number one choice, this anime is so underrated because not many ppl know about it but trust me once you pass like the 3-4 episode you be glue to your sit and watch the plot and drama unfold.

    2. Working – just too much fun.

    3. Sora no Otoshimono Forte – still alot of fun to watch and with the addition of the new dumb new angeloid it got even better.

    4. K-ON!! – if I need to explain why my decision for this, that would be consider an insult.

    5. To Aru Kagaku no Railgun – There are many item that I would pick as 5th choice but I think railgun kind of win out in the end by a bit.

Others I would have pick would have been ( Asobi ni Iku yo!, B Gata H Kei, Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu, Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou, kiss x sis, Ladies versus Butlers!, MM!, Mitsudomoe, Omamori Himari, Seitokai Yakuindomo, Shinryaku! Ika Musume (Squid Girl), Shin Koihime Musou ~Otome Tairan~, Shukufuku no Campanella, Sora no Woto, SRIKE WITCHES 2, Yosuga no Sora)

    OVA:
    1. Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike (movie) – Surprisely good it take out.
    2. ToHeart2 adnext – it was between this or kiss and sis or Sora no Otoshimono OVA and many others but I gotta say I always enjoy the To-heart series, in reality is like a tie of all 3.
    3. Summer Wars – it was enjoyable.

There aren’t that many good ova this yr, I would have pick break blade and gundam unicorn but since they are not finish yet so I can’t really give them the votes.

    arixx
  45. Well, in no particular order:
    Angel Beats!
    K-ON!!
    Kimi ni Todoke
    Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin
    Shinryaku! Ika Musume

    Still in no particular order:
    Bungaku Shoujo
    Summer Wars
    Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu

    innerchihiro
  46. picked major, being its final season and all. besides it being so awesome, it had practically no fillers in 6 seasons. good stuff!
giant killing better get a sequel and give me my needed sports fix. cross game wasn’t too bad either though. ookiku was too short for me to like.

    beh
  47. ONCE AGAIN, it sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo interesting to see what people like. MAN!! if only , IF OOONLY!! some one would do a nice statistical graph with demographics, geographical influences , advertising effects etc etc… THAT WOULD BE THE BEST!!!!

    BROOKLYN otaku
  48. Eep!! That was hard…

In the end, these were my votes:

    TV:
    1. FMA
    2. Amagami SS
    3. Kobato
    4. K-on
    5. Kaichou wa Maid-sama

I really wanted to put Angel Beats and even Inuyasha on there… But oh well…

    For movies/ovas:
    1. Gundam unicorn
    2. Fate/stay night
    3. Tales of Symphonia – does no one other than me like this series / game? T.T

    Amiena
  49. 3. Angel Beats!
    4. Railgun
    5. Working!!
    6. Soranowoto
    7. Giant Killing

    Runner up: Panty & Stocking

    OVA/Movie
Only thing I saw on that list was the Railgun OVA. Very good btw.

ALTHOUGH… These are no where near my TOP two anime of the year. That goes to Naruto Ship. (eps 166 & 167 baby!) at number 2 and finally Fairy Tail at number one at just being a ‘pure fun’ anime that’s a hoot to watch. Monday’s have become, “don’t even ask me about doing any overtime at work” day. 🙂 That and I’ve constantly watched an rewatched so many of those episodes there’s nothing else that can compare to that much interest in an anime show.

    Acadia
  50. OVA/Movies were easy – Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu, Bungaku Shoujo and Angel Beats (lol)
As for anime series, it was harder since nothing really stood out much, probably needed ten.
Voted for: Katanagatari, Durarara, Angel Beats (spectacular trainwreck), Legend of Legendary Heroes, and Letter Bee.

    NanoNano
  51. how come so many people like angel beats and even as number 1? i only watched the first episode and did not like it one bit. maybe there should be polls for different categories.
I just cannot stand the thought that angel beats be the best anime of 2010

    torauma
    1. While I don’t think that Angel Beats! was the best anime of this year, it was very good and very well could have been the best if it only had a few more episodes to work with. In my opinion, Brotherhood was the best show of the year and its ending was just awesome.

      pcwolff
      1. VERY TRUE! It’s stupid to judge a series by the first episode alone, especially since it is merely an introduction. Some series that have an amazing first episode ends up having a lame story or plot in the long run while there are some series who have a crappy first episode but ended up being an awesome series in the long run.

If you want to judge a series at least watch 3-5 episodes before making a decision whether it suits your taste or not, believe me cuz if you do this to every series you evaluate then you are guaranteed to miss so many series that are very good like Angel Beats. Well of course to each his own, I know someone who just judge a series based on pictures, summary, and PVs alone, which I’m not saying is bad since of course everyone has different preferences, what I’m merely doing is suggesting that it is such a waste to evaluate a series based on a first episode basis and give up on it based on that, especially if the series has such a good art and character design like Angel Beats.

        X
    2. Possibly because of the opening sequence? I don’t get it’s popularity from a casual viewer standpoint either, by my standards it’s a messy messy story (with not a whole like to make up for it in the way of production values) that’s like a mishmash of Key tropes and desperately unfunny comedy that doesn’t even match up to the level of other Key shows like Clannad and Kanon. Clannad and Kanon being shows I merely thought were okay chick flick type stories with a good production values. On the other hand the Key brand is so intensely popular with today’s anime crowd that posts on the internet that a lot of people of the type who are so forgiving when a show comes from a favourite writer or studio that it’s kind of no small wonder it’s still so popular.

If I had to predict the result of this poll based on votes it’ll be FMA, K-On!! and Angel Beats somewhere near the top of the TV series poll and Haruhi and Evangelion competing for the top spots in the movie category, with possibly a slight edge to Haruhi since again, so damn popular with today’s anime crowd posting on the internet as opposed to Eva which had it’s heyday in the 90’s.

As for what I found to be the standout TV shows this year in no particular order:

      – Rainbow with it’s melodramatic storytelling was a gripping ride from start to finish.
      – Durarara was also an interesting story with some interesting characters even if I got lost in the narrative sometimes
      – Gintama continued to be as funny as ever and with a new movie and a news series starting up soon it looks like it’ll be continuing that trend some time into the near future.
      – Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt was one of the more experimental shows I’ve seen come along in a while and was also pretty amusing from time to time.

I couldn’t actually think of five shows that stood out enough for me to voice support for them so I just left my vote at four.

      As for Movies/OVAs:

      – Gundam Unicorn was an obvious pick as the standout show for me, featuring great action, interesting dialogues and many story-relevant homages to early U.C Gundam works.
      – Soukou Kihei Votoms Genei-hen was the latest entry in the Votoms universe and sort of the farewell for it’s main character Chirico Cuvie. Getting to see some of the characters from the original TV series for what might very well be the last time kind of reminded me of the feeling I got watching Macross Flashback 2012.
      – Gundam 00 Awakening of the Trailblazer…..would have been on my vote list most likely only I haven’t managed to see it properly subtitled or dubbed yet and thus can’t really justify giving a vote until I’m absolutely sure it’s worth it. Instead I went with Break Blade’s 1 & 2 which were interesting Sci-Fi Fantasy OVA’s that are currently starting to heat up and become something of a sleeper hit in the community.

    3. I stuck with Angel Beats because of it’s humor. Other than that I wouldn’t try and look at the other aspects such as Show Spoiler ▼

  52. There were some really strong titles this year, but I had to pick the ones that I would race home from work to see. Don’t laugh, but they were:
Kaichou ha Maid-sama, Inuyasha, Heroman, Otome Yokai Zakuro, and Hanasakeru Seishounen.
OVA’s/Movies: Gundams, Eva (Shojo and Mecha….what could be better) :p

      1. Well thats what makes anime, anime. I mean what stops shows like TTGL from making universe sized robots travelling faster than the speed of light and still being able to see light great? I thought the mental calcultion of the last equation to be one of the most powerful moments in the entire movie.

        Flappy
  53. Wow, can’t believe how active I am this past year, guess I had a lot more free time than I thought.

Anyways, it’s pretty hard to pick for both categories since I enjoyed a lot of great titles OVA and TV-wise.

    Durarara!
    Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

I’d have probably voted for Kuragehime but I haven’t finished watching it yet. Angel Beats, Durarara!!, B Gata H Kei, Hanamaru Youchien, Kaichou wa Maid-sama!, Ookami-san, PSG, Soredemo, Sora no woto and The book of Bantorra were also mostly brilliant.

  59. I completely forgot Gintama ended this season. My wish for Gintama to win almost made me not vote for any other show. Almost. Only thing wrong with Gintama is that it can’t be both a traditional shounen anime (and actually have a plot) as well as a completely ridiculous comedy at the same time.

FMA deserves the victory, though. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better shounen anime (from both a plot and action perspective).

  60. Okay it was hard but even though Harhui’s movie was amazing Fate/Stay Night + Eden of the East movies stood out to me the most only the fact of how damn well both companies worked super hard to make it the best of the year. For the show side I thought Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu was very underrated, I found it so funny I ended up on the floor for most of the episodes, it deserves praise (I don’t know if you haven’t watched it Divine but if you have I would like to know what you thought of it?). The others were Angel Beats (of course), Durarara!! (again of course), Amagami SS, and finally Sora No Otoshimono (which still impresses me to this day). Either way this was the hardest choice for me in a long time, shows that 2010 left a very strong impression and it’ll be the king until huger blockbusters come. For now they got Haruhi backing 2010 up LOL, gonna be hard 😉

      1. Sad it didn’t see much light I only know a few people out of my 100 others who love anime watched it and they love comedy too. Anyways, thanks for your opinion my friend :). Hope this will be a great fight with all these good shows, I want to see close ones.

        Jason Isenberg
      1. well, everybody it’s listing their favorites shows so…

        Normal broadcast:

        Shiki
        Angel beats
        ookami-san…
        The World God Only Knows
        Oreimo

        ova/movie:

        Fate unlimited blade works
        The disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
        Eve no jikan

        dave
  61. It was easy to pick the first four for me: FMA:B, Saraiya Goyou, Giant Killing and Shiki. Had a struggle for the last one but ultimately decided on RAINBOW for its drama and bromance.

I reckon FMA: B would win the readers poll.

    Heinrich Lelouch
  62. 1. Shinryaku! Ika Musume
    2. Seitokai Yakuindomo
    3. Ore no Imouto
    4. K-ON!!
    5. Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai

K-ON!! would’ve been my top choice if it had surpassed the first season in terms of comedy. Unfortunately, in my opinion, that didn’t happen. And just in the nick of time (I finished it last night), Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai got in my top 5 list.

  63. I wish the TV was split into half (13ep) and full (26ep) seasons. So hard to choose top 5 combined. And maybe put shows with “!” or “!!” in them separately too.

    TV
    Ika!
    K-ON!!
    Railgun
    Sora no woto
    Working!!

Movie (sucks I’ve only seen at best 1/3 of those listed)
    Macross
    Haruhi
    Eva 2.22

Really enjoyed this year. Lots of good shows.

  64. I actually liked more than 3 animes in the OVA/Movie category

Unfortunately, I can’t say the same on the series category. Only got 3 that I liked while the rest are just filler that I can place above the rest.

    HOTD
    Seitokai Yakuindomo
    B Gata H Kei
    Soredemo (filler)
Durarara (filler. I didn’t really like the latter parts and I forgot to vote for Ika.)

    OVA/Movies
    Eva 2.22
    Black Lagoon Roberta’s Blood Trail
    Unlimited Blade Works
Eve no Jikan movie (didn’t vote for this because of the limitation as well as for being a re-edit)

Judging from the posts here, there seems to be quite a bit of varying opinions around. It would be interesting to see the results come January 2.

  65. hard to choose…
    anyways;
    series:

    ova/movies:

  66. I see 25 series in that list of 2010. My top 5:

    1.- Oreimo.
2.- Katanagatari, the least episode was epic.
3.- Mitsudomoe, I don’t remember the last time I laugh too much.
    4.- Working!!
    5.- Yosuga no Sora .

“Twincest” is the word of the Year.

  67. Kobato
    Otome Youkai Zakuro
    Railgun
    Kaichou wa maid-sama!
    Shiki

Kimi ni todoke and AngelBeats miss out because they ended weak
Arakawa under the bridge was great – but the 2nd season ruined it

IMO overall 2009 was a better year.

  68. FMA:B
    Cross Game
    To Aru Kagaku no Railgun
    Kimi ni Todoke
    Arakawa Under the Bridge

FMA totally deserves this because of how epc and awesome it got. Cross Game in the other hand was very much underrated and I wish it gets a good spot here. Railgun was just totally fun, and totally salvaged the To aru series for me, Kimi ni Todoke and Arakawa are fine choices too. I wouldve included Kobato, Durarara, Angel Beats, Baka to Test and Ika Musume in here but I could only choose 5.

Admittedly the Spring Season was the best out of all 4.

    ahelo
  69. ANIME:
    – FMA: Brotherhood. HANDS DOWN.
    – Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt
    – Durarara
    – Kuragehime
    – Shiki

But honorable mentions for me are:
    – Baka to Test – epic fun, i tell you.
    – Working!! – one of the best slice of life i’ve seen
    – Arakawa Under the Bridge (Damn you, second season.)
    – Kimi ni Todoke

    OVA/Movie:
    – Eve no Jikan
    – Macross
    – One Piece: Strong World! (because i love one piece <3)

    TV:
    1. Amagami SS
    2. Angel Beats!
    3. Baka to Test to Shokanjuu (it really deserves more love)
    4. Kaichou wa Maid-sama!
    5. Working!

    OVA/movies:
    1. Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu
    2. Tales of Symphonia
    (haven’t seen others)

  71. it is kinda hard just to make 5 choices…
in all the anime series of a whole Year…

    if i could choose… i would choose like 8 or 10…
but if i see it from the ppl who doesnt watch to much anime…

    i hv to say…

    -Shinryaku! Ika-Musume!
    -Working!!!

these 2 are really entertaining… not to hard to understand…
u dont need to know to much anime to keep up with them…
really good series that u can recomend to ur “non Anime Watcher” Friends
    and they may enjoy…

about the other choices… i’ll keep it for myself… =P

    3. Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu

It was hard leaving off Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Baka to Test, Tales of Vesperia and Fate/stay night UBW. There are many other great ones to choose from, too.

Still, I really do enjoy and love the series that I voted for. They rank real high for me as I was watching them and I definitely will re-watch them.

I’m looking forward to the final results. This should be interesting and fun!

Thanks to all the writers and readers at Random Curiosity, and Happy New Year!

  80. I must say BLACK ROCK SHOOTER is the best animated movie of the year. It’s clean, it’s well done. Fine music, great character design, and most importantly, the plot well developed without much words needed! That’s how an “animated video” is supposed to be, instead of becoming another talk-show or radio program.

The second Eden of the East: Lost Paradise got my other vote for having a real ending and a fun one, too. The way Takizawa finally fulfilled his promise, “to punch the old man,” but not really, was a complete surprise. Love it.

Katanagatari is the best animated TV series, no doubt. Its style says it all.

I couldn’t make up my mind for my other honorary vote: The sequel of K-on!!? or Gintama? I gave it to Gintama, for wrapping up nicely its two hundred and one episodes of original comedy. The Monty Python ending of Panty&Stocking with Garterbelt was good, but Gintama is it, the Prince of all comedic anime.

    dorasaga
    1. I still can’t believe there’s no preview for BLACK ROCK SHOOTER that can do justice. It’s a drama about two worlds, about pure friendship beyond boundaries, and about the transcendentals, depending on your take, in a gothic or a fantastic way.

  85. Deciding between Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance and Eve no Jikan was hard. I went with the former in the end, since Eve no Jikan is basically a recap of the series.

I hope many people vote for Shiki. It is truly amazing.

  86. Can’t do much with the OVA/movies, coz I haven’t seen much of those lately.

    Anyway,my TV list:
    1. K-ON!!
    2. Ika Musume
    3. BakaTest
    4. Working!!
    5. Seitokai Yakuindomo

Choosing just 5, out of the many shows I liked this year was tough, but being a huge comedy fan, these 5 were pretty much masterpieces when I watched them.

    Firelord
  87. I thought it would be hard at first, but then I look at my list and realized the true 5 winners.

    1. FMA : Brotherhood – Deserves show of the year for sure.
    2. Sora no Woto – Extremely underrated show.
    3. Angel Beats! – Despite the flaws, it’s still a major show.
    4. K-On!! – I don’t support the moe invasion, but this slice-of-life was one of the highlights of the year.
    5. Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu – Looking back, I can’t remember why I rated this show so high, but then reading comments here reminded me how funny the show was.

Haruhi – Haven’t watched yet, but I can tell its epic from the general community.
UBW – Pacing was absurd, but I gotta support F/SN.
Summer Wars – Movie wasn’t the most amazing, but I liked it.

  88. It is hard to pick a Top 5 but these are the best ones of the season IMO.

  91. it’s sad, wish i had the time to watch many other great series so i could see if my top 5 really belonged in the top 5. but to see k-on, soronowoto, railgun, working, ookami, HOTD, (series i all enjoyed) and leave out RAINBOW and Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei feels like an absolute slap to the face to some of the lesser known, truly moving series out there and not giving credit to great series when all you see these days are harems, tsunderes, and cute, shallow romance (not that they’re all bad). if only a poll could be conducted when everyone has watched all the series could fair judging take place. oh well, whatever…anyways for series
    1. Rainbow
    2. Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei
    3. FMA: B
    4. Angel Beats

  92. Oh my gosh this poll killed me. I’m just going to list all my favorites.
Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu (The tech system was interesting. I can’t believe randomc didn’t blog this to the end. I’d say it’s about as good as Ika Musume.)
    K-ON! (1st season. 2nd season wasn’t that good, imo.)
Kaichou wa Maid Sama! (Need I say more?)
Ladies versus Butlers (not to be taken seriously, haha.)
MM! (Not as good as the other lmao comedies, but still pretty good.)
Mitsudomoe (I cracked up so hard…)
Ookami-san (I love all the characters. Romance was pathetic on Ryoushi’s part, but I like how he stands up for her.)
OreImo (I <3 Kuroneko. 'Nuff said.)
Seitokai Yakuindomo (This + Mitsudomoe = ROFL)
Shinrei Tantei Yakuindomo (I haven't finished it yet, but it's interesting)
Shinryaku! Ika Musume (Almost as good as Mitsudomoe + Seitokai. I <3 Ika!)
Working!! (Almost as good as Ika Musume)
Yumeiro Patissiere (Okay, my cousin introduced me to this. I got hooked over the sweets competitions.)
You don't have Bleach up there, but I dropped it anyways. Haha.

  93. TV series :
    1. Working!!
    2. To Aru Kagaku no Railgun
    3. Angel Beats!
    4. Sora no Otoshimono Forte (The 2nd season was awesome!)
    5. So-Ra-No-Wo-To (Epic Ending)

my 5th choice is a hard one between SRNWT, Ika Musume and OreImo. K-On!! 2nd season was a meh for me.

    OVA/Movies :
    1. Break Blade
    2. Bungaku Shoujo
    3. Black Rock Shooter

  94. My bet for this year is FMA: Brotherhood. The show delivers what exactly a shounen anime should have. Amazing action scenes, terrific characters, good sense of humor and an outstanding storyline. Definitely deserving for the BEST ANIME OF 2010.

    Top 5:
    1. FMA: Brotherhood

    2. Durarara!! – the unique thing about durarara!! is that it delivers different pointsof-view on what is happening around ikebukuro which makes the storyline a good one. add a crazy bunch of characters and a fantastic OP and ED, surely a contender for the best anime of 2010.

    3. Kaichou wa Maid-Sama – i was excited to watch this one since my friend recommended it to me. i like the whole romantic-comedy theme of the show and the cat and dog relationship between usui and misaki. definitely maid-sama delivers what a good shoujo anime should be.

    4. Angel Beats – i was kinda thrown off when i first watch this show. episode one seems a little confusing on my part. as i continue watching, i saw raw emotions on the characters and there are times which i almost cried. i kinda think it was a bit too short but perhaps a season two should do the trick.

    5. Yosuga no Sora – i will definitely nominate this as the controversial anime of 2010. it makes you question the morality of the show particularly the incest part between sora and haru.

  95. Well if ever RC included FMA:Brotherhood last year, it might make Shinryaku Ika Musume win this one which hands down everyone will agree on. There are lots of favorite anime this year but Ika Musume really take over the whole nation by storm, unlike K-ON!! it takes a large budget and a huge amount of time to rise on fame.

    pedobear
  96. 1. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
    2. Shiki
    3. Arakawa Under the Bridge (x Bridge)
    4. Kuroshitsuji II

wasn’t able to complete my list because I didn’t watch that much anime this year. maybe drrr but I haven’t finished it yet. Also, Shiki deserves more love.

  97. Angel Beats, number one, all the way! I’ve watched a lot of anime this year, and the competition is REALLY close, but in the end, I enjoyed Angel Beats the most out of everything this year. If it had been longer, it would have been a series that would have gone down in history.

  98. My votes (starting from the most favorite)
    Angel Beats! — Best Drama
Ookiku Furikabutte ~Natsu no Taikai-hen~ — Best Sports
Kimi ni Todoke — Best Romance
Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai (The World God Only Knows) — Best Sci-fi/Fantasy
Shinryaku! Ika Musume (Squid Girl) — Best Comedy

    Honorable Mention:
Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru — It is as funny as Squid Girl, and has deeper messages at times. But Squid Girl doesn’t rely on “fan service”, and, hence, won my vote in the comedy category.

Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei (Tatami Galaxy) — It is one of the “cult” animes of the year. But we have only five votes…

Durarara — It creates a very creepy (and, hence, fitting) atmosphere for this type of thriller story.

Sora no Woto — The ending is (sadly, but expectedly) “too convenient”. I wouldn’t put this series on the top of the list. Nonetheless, it is a good production in its own right.

    OVA:
    Eve no Jikan
    Eva 2.2
    Kureha

And, to create my own favorite category…

Best Anime Song of the Year:
Only My Railgun (To Aru Kagaku no Railgun OP1)
Runner-up: Hikari no Senritsu (Sora no Woto OP)

    Matroid
  99. My choice:

    1) Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei (The Tatami Galaxy): Surpasses everything I watched this year, plus their grandmas. Also, watching this awakened the anime hipster in me.
    2) Amagami SS: Because as far as good anime with strong male leads go this year, few others are as bro as Junichi. And watching it makes me feel good.
    3) Katanagatari: Because the monthly wait was worth it.
    4) Soredemo Machi Wa Mawatteiru:I liked it. It entertained me, which says a lot about an anime these days.
    5) So Ra No Wo To: It was the most memorable thing last Winter, and I had many fond memories with it.

    Honourable mentions:
Du Ra Ra Ra: Second half wasn’t as strong as I liked it to be.
K-On!!: better than last round! They actually DO THINGS now!
Working!!: For weathering the bad times known as “Spring 2010”
Mitsudomoe + Seitokai Yakuindomo: No better place than these for dirty jokes.

    Yamibakeru
    1. Forgot to include my special mentions:
Shiki – Didn’t vote for it because Muroi and Sunako (somehow) survive
      Soredemo Machi Wa Mawatteiru
      K-On!!
Angel-Beats – the number of episodes brought it down a bit
      The World God Only Knows
      —-
      Eden of the East 1&2
      Summer Wars
      Black Rock Shooter

      entropy
  100. My votes:
Cross Game – definitely the winner for me this year
Tantei Opera Milky Holmes – I laughed way too much watching this to not vote for it
Shinryaku! Ika Musume – Loved Ika and, like above, I had lots of laughs
Working!! – just really enjoyed this

    Gundam Unicorn
    Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Lagann-hen

    drsypher
  101. 1.Amagami SS: For making me look forward to the next week
    2.Durarara!!: Because ‘Dollars’ is awesome
3.Seitokai Yakunindomo: The kind of student council I want to have in my school
4.Ore no Imouto ga konna ni kawaii wake ga nai: Having Kana Hanazawa as Kuroneko is foulplay (Nii-san~~)
5.Katanagatari: For making me look forward to the next month

    Movie/OVA
1.Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade: Because UBW is too awesome to describe
2.Macross Frontier Itsuwari no Hime: Because there’s Sheryl,Ranka and some of my favorite music
3.Shakugan no Shana S: Because Shana is just so cute

    Honorable Mentions:
Angel Beats: The ending was a bit to sad for me
So Ra No Wo To: Kalafina(Hikari no Senritsu) made listening to the opening so worth it
Hanamaru Youchien: Wouldn’t it be nice if all kids were like them
Kurenai OVA: Was really to my liking, but the competition is too strong
Bakemonogatari: Episode 12 had to be in 2009
Kiss x Sis: For non-blood related Twin sisters are every men’s dream
Yosuga no Sora: Made me spend hours looking for a full english patch for the game
Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu: Because there’s a sequel called Dai Densetsu no Yuusha no no Densetsu
This list will go on forever so I’ll stop here

And we need a poll for Best Anime Song of the year =D

    Kaiser
  102. My favourites in no particular order:
    Kuragehime
    Katanagatari
    Tatami Galaxy
    Cross game

and because it was hard to choose a fifth one i decided on Angel beats. But honourable mentions go to FMA:B, Kimi ni Todoke and Sunred season 2. I guess I could give a shout out to Durarara as well for having likeable characters and interesting first half, the weak second half however qualifies it as this years disappointment.

    Kovski
  103. Am I mistaken, I can’t seem to locate Bakuman anywhere?

    Anyhow, fun year with:

Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai
    To Aru Kagaku no Railgun
    Amagami SS
    Katanagatari
    K-ON!!

    Squaredonut
  104. TV series
    1. Durarara (Im a sucker for Narita Ryhogo’s novels. I really love the unique characters)
    2. Shiki (Although theres a Vampire hype everywhere, Shiki is nothing like the rest Excellent anime)
    3. FMA Brotherhood (The 2nd try on this manga gave it justice, great cast and action anime)
    4. Densetsu no Yuusha Densetsu (Slow at first, but it turn out quite well with the character development. Its Magic, Romance, action, politics?)

    OVA/Movies
    1. Break Blade
    2. King of thorn

    Honorable mentions:

    Macross Itsuwari no Uta hime
    Fate/UBW

    Gundam 00 movie

  106. I watched a heck load of series in 2010 compared to previous years, and for the first time I’m stumped on what to place in my top 5. Still, it’s been a good year and I have enjoyed all the series that I’ve picked up. 😛

    lightning
  107. 1.Rainbow -To summarize my “Rainbow Rant”;A perfect rare gem,one of the best anime of ALL TIME.Period.
2.Sengoku Basara 2 -was awesome but 1st season is better
3.FMA Brotherhood -good story, but Ed can be annoying at times
4.Psychic Dectective Yakumo -ok and iffy, interesting, slow beginning, boring characters that need more personality,it gets better later on though
5.Togainu no Chi -haven’t seen much, but I know the whole story from the game,it’s sad

And almost everything else this year I wasn’t interested in.
It wasn’t a good new anime year for me. It was mostly ecchi, comedies, and shoujo anime this year, the same old stuff, seriously. The best anime have uniqueness,a good story, and realistic characters to relate to.

    Anna Wolf
  108. TV series:

    1) FMA: Brotherhood (Good action, good plot and good characters)
    2) Durarara (unique anime)
    3) Amagami SS (typical romance but entertaining to watch)

Other animes I picked because I didn’t know what to pick:

    4) Angel Beats (nice music and decent characters but plot/ideas was a bit weird i.e. why is the after death world a high school?)
    5) MM! ( Was quite interesting at the 1st few eps then became typical high school comedy which bore me)

    OVA/Movies

    1. Gundam unicorn
    2. Darker than Black Gaiden
