Legend: 0 Divine 5 Kiiragi 3 Prooof 4 Takaii Not covering/watching

Despite the horrific earthquake earlier this month, Japan’s anime industry trudges along and doesn’t miss its originally scheduled start date for the spring season. With the exception of Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, the rest of the winter shows will conclude by next week, ending with Yumekui Merry on Thursday. So with that in mind, it’s time to give a quick overview of what will be covered on the site in the upcoming weeks.

First off, you’ll notice that I’m planning to take the season off despite how hectic it is (the poll has been fairly supportive of the idea), so this is what the blogging schedule will look like in my absence. Naturally less shows are going to be covered, but with the other writers covering a handful of shows each, there will still be a fair amount of regular content to read. With an absolutely daunting 43 show lineup, there’s simply no way to cover all the shows and quite honestly, no need to either, as the amount of new content would be ridiculous (i.e. a post won’t stay on the front page for more than 24 hours).

I realize there are a lot of shows not being covered, but I have no intention of bringing in more writers for the sake of covering as many shows as possible. Quantity isn’t everything and this isn’t an anime blogging service. Random Curiosity has four regular writers, which is much more than the one or two-man show it’s typically been. I’m quite happy with the group that I have and how reliable they’ve been, so this is simply a place for the current writers to voice their thoughts on a handful of shows that interest them. Before I get any more e-mails offering to contribute, please read the note at the top of the Spring 2011 Preview for an exception I would make.

Please note: This schedule is tentative and writers may opt to cover different shows after the first week. Included this time around is a bar beneath each entry indicating what each of the writer’s intentions are (at least initially) in terms of watching it on a weekly basis, so if anyone does decide to cover a different show, it would be another one they’re watching. It’s also meant to show what series will be covered in the monthly Retrospective Look, which I may or may not still chime in for. (Writing about 30 shows is a bit much.) Updates to this schedule will be made as needed.

Updates:
03/31: For a comparison to last spring, see the retroactively added blogging schedule.
04/18: Kiiragi has picked up coverage of Steins;Gate, Anohana, and Ao no Exorcist. Prooof has picked up C.

  1. The only thing I don’t understand is why the other writers are not willing to cover the shows that are more than likly going to be insanely popular. I completly understand you wanting to take a break, but it looks like to me that STEINS;GAT, Ao no Exorcist and C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control should be covered by someone.

    1. Yeah, those are some shows I would’ve liked to see covered (in fact, all the shows I categorized under HIGH expectations in the preview), but ultimately it’s up to them with the limited amount of time they can commit.

Ao no Exorcist, Anohana, C, STEINS;GATE, and even Hidan no Aria would be shoo-ins for me.

However, so are A-Channel, Deadman Wonderland, Denpa Onna, Hanasaku Iroha, and Kami nomi II, which are being covered.

In a season with so many options, I probably would’ve made it a point to prioritize based on some degree of popularity. The Sunday 5pm timeslot being one of them, plus the original noitaminA shows, even though the latter two aren’t always that well-received.

      1. All the high recommendations that you listed in the preview of the season I plan on watching or giving a try(except maybe a-channel, don’t know if I could get myself to watch that). Anyway the three shows I listed I guess I am just super excited for because I see a lot of potential in them. I guess I just might not being coming here as often this spring, main reason I come here in the first place is because you guys do give excellent run down of the shows but not only that most the time you catch stuff in the episodes I didn’t catch myself so it’s just really enjoyable watching my favorite shows and then coming on here to see what I might have not understood. Anyway like I said I am completely OK with you taking a break, just to get away for a little while is completely understandable.

  2. Maybe a weird question, but where does it show who is gonna blog what?
That the first letters underneath are for the writers who are gonna watch that show is something i know, but not where it shows who is gonna blog what.

    damrod
  3. Do you guys happen to be willing to hire people? With so many shows not being covered, I would be kind of interested in giving it a try. My problem is that I have quite limited Japanese ability, so it would have to be Crunchyroll simulcasts or shows with little and/or easy to understand dialogue.

    1. I have high hopes for the 2 SHAFT series airing this season, but seriously, why 2? They have a very hard time finishing Madoka on sched hence its on-hold status and they are doing 2 series now? The same thing can be said with Bakemonogatari which have an episode of almost still pictures, random scene shots, and wall of text on screen (at least the episode was aired on TV) and many other SHAFT shows. I expected the 2 series to be SHAFTed at any point but hopefully ‘NOT TOO SHAFTed.’

    2. What’s with all the “since it’s Shaft..” business?

Did that company make a bad name for themselves due to excessive delays in the past? (Mind you I watched Bakemonogatari after it was completed so I don’t know how it was aired.) 😐

      1. SHAFT has made a reputation for itself with inconsistent quality and very rushed productions to the point that an episode of Bakemonogatari wasn’t completed on time and aired as a bunch of still frames. When they’re good, they’re really good. When they’re bad, they can be pretty bad.

Also, director Akiyuki Shinbou’s unique style has the tendency to completely change an adaptation in ways that some people don’t like (myself included).

    3. Supposedly the episodes are finished, but MBS hasn’t given it a timeslot. MBS has the first broadcasting rights, so it can’t be streamed on Nico Nico or shown on other stations (i.e. TBS) until MBS shows it.

      goldconker
      1. There is always a Webcast for that. I don’t know anything about licensing rights or its scope, but Bakemonogatari ep13-15 was not shown on TV but on web before it was release on BD.

I don’t really care about the quality of webcast, there is always a BD release to compensate for that. I can’t just say good bye and thank you for the winter season without seeing its best series ended. Just saying ~

  4. Have any of the RC bloggers considered “mini impressions” with literally 3-6 screen caps and 2-3 sentences of text (similar to the amount of text in the monthly recaps, except done on a weekly basis for a select few shows).

I’m thinking if each blogger does that for maybe 2 shows (hopefully only taking like 15mins per episode) that’ll already allow 6 additional shows to be covered.

I think that will be in line with the spirit of “quality over quantity” – just a very short entry of the key impressions of the episode.

    Zeuradin
  5. Takaii looks as such as hard worker to others, of course it’s compliment 🙂 Too bad about you Divine, but after all it’s probably pretty tiring to blog for so long 😉
Sad to see AnE, C:The Money and Steins Gate not covered. Especially the last one, because imo it will be difficult to understand, so the review would be helpful ;p

    Darkmaya
  6. meh, I expect Divine to get bored while he takes the season off and something strange to happen.

Anyway, This season looks interesting. Have some great series on lineup that I look forward to. I am just glad that at least some people in Japan realize that the best way to recover from a disaster is to spend your way out of it and not by showing restraint.

    noobiesnack
  7. I’m also concerned about some key shows being uncovered, particularly the Noitamina shows, Steins;Gate, and Ao no Exorcist. What happened to Suzuku? He got posts out slow but at least we’d have the shows covered.

    Bluelarry
    1. Suzuku couldn’t keep up with his shows and always had something else “coming up”. He was also a drain on my time to work with, so I had to let him go. He’d be unavailable for extended periods of times and always have some excuse why his posts are late. In short, he didn’t have what it takes to blog on RC.

  8. Hm. A few very popular shows are being left out here, like Ao no Exorcist and C… that’s problematic. You might want to consider maybe getting another writer to help blog those? Dunno.

I’m really interested in probably 10+ shows this season, but I, personally, have no interest in 90% of the shows you guys are covering here. Kind of disappointing… but I understand that you guys don’t have allll the time in the world.

    A person
  9. Divine, couldn’t you do an RL each month for a few shows instead of none at all? I mean,no point doing the shows that don’t make any form of strong impression on you.

    Smuglord
    1. If you could Divine at least keep the monthly reviews, it is a good way even if its only for first month of this spring season just to see how well or bad some series start, you know as a termometer of which series worth watching. Opinions of the whole group of RC bloggers is my way to find some hidden gems.

      bga
  10. The schedule looks pretty grim.. 🙁

Like everyone is saying, a lot of the shows we expected the writers to follow weren’t chosen. [Even though Takaii is doing a 9-5 this season] I’m a bit saddened that I won’t get to laugh and read the bloggers’ thoughts on the shows I’m gonna be most thrilled about. I don’t have many friends that are into/watch current anime. Looks like IRC is the next best thing for me.. :\

Enjoy your time off Divine. Can’t wait for you to get back.

  11. From the outset, you’ll be covering 3 of the shows I plan to watch, which is the same as the winter season, so…not really all that different to me. 🙂 I applaud all of you for the blogging you do; I wouldn’t even have the patience to properly blog a 12 episode series.

    boznia
  12. Yeah, too bad about Ao no Exorcist, C, Anohana, and Steins;Gate. Would of liked to have seen the opinions on a few of those, but everyone needs a well deserved break. A thought though, how bout just a empty post without screenshots and coverage, so we can put our comments down.

    Namzor
    1. Don’t get your pubes in a knot. Remember that these guys aren’t doing this for you. (It’s for me.) Also, there are other great Anime Blogs that are affiliated with Random Curiosity. They are listed on the sidebar to the right.

      1. Whoa whoa, Captain Serious, I suggest you reread what I posted and you’ll see it was a joke.No need to get your panties in a bunch.

And I checked those so called “other great anime blogs”.Needless to say, I’ll be Captain Obvious here and say thanks for that laugh.

        anishuma
  13. Wow Takaii thanks for picking up Hanasaku Iroha.

Are you guys considering doing some first impressions on the shows you’ve categorized under High Expectations? Its gonna be heaps helpful. Hopefully we’ll see more shows covered in this schedule after first week of spring. 🙂

    Nhelraios
    1. Hopefully some of the writers will have time to cover the first episodes of the other shows they’re watching, but this transition period between seasons is always a bit rough, especially with the newly-added monthly post that needs to go out.

Also, none of the writers watch raws except me, so the timeliness of first episode posts will slip a bit when fansubs are picking up new shows (and probably spending more time than they should trying to piece together song lyrics). This is one of the reasons why I’d only consider bringing on another writer who can help cover raws. I value speed as much as I do quality.

  14. Ah. Really wish Ao no Exorcist would be blogged, but I guess it can’t be helped. Its really up to the writers to decide what to spend their time on. At least Deadman Wonderland is being blogged 🙂

    Soapie
  15. Ahh, I wouldn’t have minded helping. I have the time, and I don’t think I’m a bad writer. But I see that you do have a pretty good line up for writers, especially since blogs typically have, as you stated, one or two people only. I hope Spring goes good for you Divine. You always crank out those posts one after another, and they’ve all been really helpful, so I think you more than deserve a break.

    lucjan
  16. You definitely deserve a break Divine. Take time off and relax- things will be fine here 🙂 It would be way worse for you to overwork yourself and everyone would be worried.

Most of the shows being covered are ones I’ll be watching anyhow (6/8 that are being covered), so I’m not that concerned. The picks were a little strange; I’d figured that [C] would definitely be snatched up with all the expectations. Same with Steins;Gate and Exorcist.
And while I’m disappointed that AnoHana won’t be blogged, I’m grateful that all the writers are working so hard to pull together to complete the season.
Very happy that Deadman Wonderland is going to get picked up! There are other blogs for other shows that aren’t being covered here this season too.

I’ll be cheering everyone on! 🙂

    Aisu
  17. Take that break, Divine, you deserve it and you most definitely need it. Don’t want you to get too burnt out from too much blogging.

I’m quite surprised no-one will be blogging AnoHana though, this ought to be up there with Hanasaku Iroha in terms of drama calibre. Same for Hidan no Aria, which has that Shana/Index feel to it.

This is gonna be one busy season, and it is just as well that my 500GB HDD chooses now to break down (though not before I’ve backed up most of the important stuff, so little harm done). This means I’m in a race against time to get a new one ready before the new season begins this weekend, lol.

    Kinny Riddle
  18. it just really occurred to me how much Divine blogs each season with this schedule. or maybe its just because of how many shows there are this season. or probably both.

anyway, I was hoping someone would blog seikon no qwaser to show how good it is and its not just fanservice. it seems only 4 shows im watching will be blogged at least. maybe you can just get 1 more blogger at least to blog the others.

oh and will Divine still gonna blog naruto manga?

    amado
    1. Sorry, I didn’t mean to ignore this comment. I’m not sure what’s going to happen with the Naruto manga just yet. Kiiragi might cover it on my behalf, I may continue covering it (and only it), or just let it go unblogged for a few months.

  19. Please note: This schedule is tentative and writers may opt to cover different shows after the first week.

Sounds like Divine’s fans are swarming 😉
Who knows what will happen when the new season finally falls upon us. Who knows..

  20. Divine, I have a question for you: looking at the preview, I only now realize how many shows you watch – and other writers aren’t much behind you. I’m interested in watching eight of those shows, but I’m considering dropping one (Azazel-san, perhaps) because I like to have no more than one show per day to watch. So, it might sound stupid but, how do you guys keep up with it? I realize it’s easier when you can watch raw episodes, but… What about the others? Do you sit two hours in front of the PC and watch one episode after the other?

    lorenzo
    1. If you were to count, I actually watch close to twice as many shows as the next writer. I enjoy watching a wide range of shows because I find each of them have something different to offer. As for how I keep up with them, it’s really easy. An episode only takes about 20 minutes to watch if you were to skip the OP/ED sequences, so it’s possible to get through 3 shows in an hour. At that pace, it’s already 21 shows a week.

I don’t find it hard to allocate one hour a day to anime, as it’s often spent doing nothing better (like surfing the web or chatting online). People just seem to have a hard time getting into an anime-watching mood, only to wind up wasting their time on doing nothing else in particular. I found myself in that exact situation a few years back and decided to plug up that wasted time with anime.

I know a lot of people say they don’t have time to watch so many shows, but I find it very hard to believe people seriously have no free in their daily lives to watch something for an hour, as I can make much more time than that even with a full-time job and a full-time blogging site on top of real-life priorities. You just have to make a little bit of an effort to remember to watch shows as they come out so that you don’t find yourself with a huge backlog of episodes.

      1. Well, for me, it’s just that I like taking my time. Perhaps it’s just me, but I don’t like watching many different series in one day, also because my eyes get easily tired. I usually watch one or two a day – also considering series that have already aired.

        lorenzo
      2. well its not all that actually. you also have to load the video first or download unless your internet is really fast.
I face a similar problem too. when I load a video, I sometimes forget about it for a while or just put it off for later, which makes it almost a waste. of course people also have other things to do than just watching anime.
and sometimes people(like me) just dont watch as much as we actually can because of fear of being overwhelmed by the amount of shows(I sometimes even forget names of characters because I watch the others).

        amado
    1. I originally commit myself to watching at least 8 series this new season (it could be at least 20 if you include series/OVAs from previous seasons) and the rest watched after it’s done airing but with 40+ series, I don’t know myself, if it turns out that their is a lot of series worthy to follow on a weekly basis then I guess it might be greater than 8 ;D

      1. Counting shows that you’ve been putting off is kind of meaningless, because I have hundreds of those. All too often people will say, “oh I’ll spree it when it’s done” and never get around to it.

I’m going to have to quote Ieyasu from Mayoi Neko Overrun by saying, “It’s meaningless if it’s not watched in real-time!”

      2. I don’t know my commitment this next few weeks, but I just recently bought the Perfect Grade Strike Freedom Gundam and I just knew I will need plenty of time to build that kit, hence will affect my ability to watch as many anime as I can. My experience with PG 00-Raiser told me that I will need at least 100-120 hours in a span of 4 weeks for PG Strike Freedom. Hell, it took me 150+ Hours in 6 weeks last year to built PG 00 Raiser after all.

      3. marathoning after a series is done is not really a good idea most of the time. cause if you didnt find time to watch it last season, how will you find time to do it this season? unless your watching less shows this season, your likely not gonna pick it up due to the new season animes.

        amado
  21. Well, seeing this schedule make me shocked a bit. I’m just glad at least Hanasaku Iroha is being covered. Hope someone will be impressed by Anohana & Ao no Exorcist 1st episode so it will be covered 😛

    briex
  22. Kind of shmae as you all cover very different stuff and you(Divine) cover most of fun action stuf which wont be in this season covers. Still wtih huge load in this season I dont have any shows that have caught my attention after previews so will see how it turns out. (with many romance comedies good ones are so rare 🙁 and that realy s*cks)

    laaa
  23. That spring 2010 schedule seriously scares me. IIRC, divine once said it takes around 2 hours to get a single post out, which translates to 10 hours spent every Sunday on anime blogging and watching alone-______-

    Smuglord
      1. Learning about how much effort and time you put into this blog in the past makes me feel really bad for voting ‘Don’t like the idea’ in the sidebar poll, cause you sure as hell deserve a break. Just hope you don’t lose interest in this blog and fail to turn up in summer:p

        Smuglord
      2. I wouldn’t feel bad about it, because that just tells me my presence is appreciated and/or people are worried the site won’t be the same without me.

In any case, this gives the other writers a chance to “step up” and take the initiative on posting about unexpected stuff that comes up (e.g. OVAs), which normally falls on me to cover or delegate to someone else.

  24. It’ll be interesting to see if you have withdrawals Divine. “Must- Blog- NOW!!”
Well, I suppose in that case you’ll have the retrospective looks.

I’m a bit sad that some of these shows aren’t covered, mainly C, Ano Hi Mita…, and Ao no Exorcist because they’re three of the five shows that every blogger is watching. I feel like those shows should be given priority because they’re so popular, but I suppose the less popular shows should also get some limelight.

    innerchihiro
    1. The start of a new season is always an exciting time, so the thought of getting to introduce brand new shows already has me itching a bit. The one time that I may be tempted to jump in is if the other writers are having difficulty keeping up with their shows, but I think it’s better if they handle it themselves and learn how much they can take on at once.

I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up, but the guys are opening up to the idea of covering more shows in a minimalistic fashion. I’m proposing a dozen screenshots with very short and to-the-point impressions of 250-300 words for more lighthearted shows and the full format for the plot-heavy/popular titles. More on that in the upcoming days.

  25. I have to know:

What is RC’s fascination with Bleach? You would rather continue blogging Bleach, currently in filler hell for the long foreseeable future, than cover a new anime?

Stagnancy isn’t cool. Just let it go.

    Lambda Driver
    1. I think it has more to do with Prooof staying dedicated to the series he initially started with here on the site. Just my opinion but taking into consideration the nosedive the series has been taking as of late, I think it says more about him as a writer for maintaining that kind of commitment and though it may not appeal to everyone, some people are grateful enough to appreciate this contribution to the site at all along with everything else he has brought since then.

      Senakuuri
    2. It’s also due to Bleach being an RC staple, seeing as how Omni blogged it probably since the site started. The posts also garner a lot of views, and now that we have the view plugin, you can see quite a lot of people still read the posts. In the end, that’s what really matters (at least in terms of Bleach).

    3. Ironically enough, Bleach seems to consistently pull in the most views out of the “big three” shounen series.
If going by the view plugin means anything, anyways. Imagine that. 🙂

      Senakuuri
    1. All times are given in a 24-hour, relative-day format where times are extended to show which day they belong to. For instance, Friday morning at 1:30AM would become Thursday at 25:30 to show that the episode aired late Thursday night.

CX is the station in Japan it’s airing in,

(4/14) is the start date, or April 14th.

  26. Hi Divine! Sorry to post here, but even though you’re not blogging Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi, and even though it’s a yaoi series, will you still be including the OP/ED in the sidebar? 😀 I was just wondering. Thanks!

    happycat
  27. Props for being so up-to-date all the time, I usually just check my RSS feed to see if a new episode of an anime I’m watching is already up.

Are we going to be seeing First Impressions/continuing coverage for any of the following or should I not get my hopes up?

Sket Dance – while I understand the general blogging antipathy towards shonen anime on RandomC, I’d think that an anime adaptation of a manga that won the Shogakukan Award would at least be worth looking over.

Hidan no Aria – the show looks quite good, maybe there’s some sort of magic to Infinite Stratos’ time slot because while expectations weren’t really high for either IS or Aria, IS enjoyed stellar success and Aria is looking to have much of the same. It would be a shame to not continue blogging it, in my opinion.

Toriko – even just a first impression for this show would be enough for the readers, I think. I heard that the manga is of some acclaim, and despite the said shonen antipathy it should be worth a look, if only for comedy’s sake.

The above isn’t a list of demands, they’re just my arguments as to why said anime deserve a look/continuous coverage.

    DCLXVI
    1. The problem isn’t entirely because of the show, but due to limited time, each writer has to choose what they would rather do. I’m personally taking on way more than I really ought to, and I don’t think people really realize how much time goes into each post. Like Divine explained above, each post takes at the very least 2 hours, regarding capping, writing, and editing. Shounen series tend to be extremely long, and aren’t blogged because no writer wants to take that level of commitment (and general lack of interest).
Of course, Divine is taking a break, so Toriko and Aria would have likely been covered if he weren’t. Hell, we probably would have covered 90% of the 40+ shows that are airing if he were on board, but I really wanted him to have an actual break, hence why I even took over Naruto. That said, if a show isn’t covered, it’s definitely not because no one checked it out.

      1. Yes, of course, I didn’t like to make it seem like I was nagging or anything, but I would have liked even just a First Impressions post for them (Toriko and Sket Dance), even if they wouldn’t be continuously covered. I’ve never read Toriko, but I’ve read and am still reading the ever-obscure Sket Dance, and I was overjoyed that it would be getting an anime, and of course I was thinking about what kind of impressions it would make on RandomC.

I guess I’m just ragging about a pet show that didn’t get any attention, and that people like me are a dime a dozen, but then I wouldn’t really care if the impression about Sket Dance was good or bad because in this case all press is good press, and a First Impressions post would have helped promote it, obscure and unloved as it is.

But it’s all good, I do realize your workload and that you guys are all doing your best to give quality content for the readers here, so no resentment or anything. I’m not harboring any writing ambitions either, you guys do it all quite well. I just personally think that it’s a shame that the anime adaptation of a manga series that got the same award as Bleach didn’t get so much as a First Impressions post, hence my comments.

        Cheers though, no hard feelings.
