【日番谷冬獅郎の休日!】 (Hitsugaya Toshiro no kyuujitsu!)
“Hitsugaya Toshiro’s Holiday”

Summary:
Hitsugaya is on leave in the real world. He has business to attend to but is sidetracked, playing soccer as a replacement members on Karin’s team. Hitsugaya and Karin then meet Grandma Haru, an old friend of his who can also see spirits. They see a plus, Yosuke, who has been keeping Haru company along with other wandering ghosts. Karin is worried about the ghosts turning into hollows, and Hitsugaya says he will watch over Yosuke instead of performing a Soul Burial because of Grandma Haru’s attachment to him.

Hitsugaya stays at the Kurosaki house temporarily, and he and Karin continue to visit Haru and Yosuke. However, she suddenly collapses and Hitsugaya theorizes that she had been using her own reaitsu to prevent Yosuke from transforming. As a result, Yosuke transforms into a hollow and attacks them. Grandma Haru however uses her spiritual power to suppress the hollow, and Hitsugaya finishes him off. It finally begins snowing and Yosuke’s soul is able to rest in peace. Karin promises to visit Haru, and Hitsugaya returns to Soul Society.

Impressions:
Hitsugaya’s excuse is lame, he should have just used his power to make it snow, but that ruins the plot. I’m surprised shinigami have such attachments to the real world though, as usually they don’t seem to care that much aside from sending off spirits to Soul Society. This episode was a good reminder of what hollows really are, because their human aspect was mostly put aside after Inoue’s brother died. Killing a hollow purifies the soul and sends it to Soul Society, so it’s no big deal really to hack away at them.

After watching 5 minutes of this stuff though, I pretty much knew what was going to happen in the rest of the episode. It’s always the same: the main characters (of the particular episode) meet some filler character(s) who has a set of problems and an emotional backstory, then he or she is attacked by hollows. In the end, they gain some closure, possibly dying. Same old, same old. At least there’s a new filler arc next time and just judging from the preview, it actually looks mildly interesting.

  1. I can’t really say if I prefer random filler episodes or a filler arc. Well, it’s Bleach. I always enjoy watching Hitsugaya anyways. I hope this upcoming arc will be as good as the Zanpakuto arc, which I like.

  2. Okay, remember how I said this would be the last one-shot filler episode in a while and they would return to another canon arc? 75% of that statement was right. Judging from the preview, the next story arc WON’T BE CANON! This is actually WORSE than it sounds, because not only will be have to WAIT for at least another episode to return to canon now, but now, we have A WHOLE ARC THAT NO ONE WILL EVER WATCH– A-GAIN!!! *bangs head against wall(

    1. Calm down, bro.
It has been known for quite some time that there will be a filler arc after the single episode fillers. Also, there isn’t even enough source material to continue the canon story right now without going into fillers again after 10 episodes.
