「白い亡霊」 (Shiroi Bourei)
“White Ghost”

With so much fighting going on, it was really nice to see the show take a turn and tell us more about the characters. Ryouta to me has been a very selfish and ignorant man. He has been neglecting his duties and been extremely rude to the people who care about him. But now that he is slowly changing, he is more likeable. While his way of being a social burden and a problem for his mother was quite indecent, his reasoning was actually one that probably many people can identify themselves in. Very often, we find ourselves being able to make friends easier online than in real life. On the internet, you can socialise with people who share common interests with you very easily. For Ryouta to prefer staying in that kind of world isn’t something strange to me. It is in fact very realistic. But that doesn’t mean that it’s right to disregard your duties as a person in our society. So while it is easy for me to actually see the logic in Ryouta’s view on life, it’s not acceptable. Now that he has actually met one of these said friends that he likes from the game in real life, perhaps he will find pleasure in reality – that is if he ever finds out about Himiko. But even if he doesn’t find out, he might just fall in love with the real Himiko in front of him. Aside from love interests, now that he has come to see what kind of a person he really was, he will probably be less of a burden if he ever returns home, regardless of his and Himiko’s relationship.

Their bond seemed to be stronger than ever in the beginning of this episode, however, with the story of Murasaki Shiki (Fukami Rica), a survivor from the previous game, the doubt between Himiko and Ryouta grew. Murasaki’s story is sad and heartbreaking, but it was an honest portrayal of naïvety. Love is said to be stronger than anything, and perhaps that is true. Murasaki altered medical records for the person she loved – Masahito Date (Narita Ken), a doctor who ran into some troubles. It’s safe to say that Murasaki was sent to this island for bringing harm to a patient while trying to save Date, which is very reasonable. She shouldn’t have done it, but that doesn’t make Date less of an evil man. He used Murasaki’s love for him to get out of the hospital troubles, as well as during the previous survival game. Watching him take Murasaki’s chip and leave her to die was painful, and seeing him taking care of Taira near the end worries me. To see Date being nominated again wasn’t very surprising. As the cunning man he is, there have probably been more problems created by him since he returned from the island. And he isn’t the only cunning person on this island. There seems to be someone else who likes to use others for her own benefit. Kinoshita Hidemi (Hikasa Youko) certainly knows how to use people, and she appears to be the only active female player aside from Himiko on this island!

Now that Himiko has heard Murasaki’s story, the doubt between her and Ryouta is stronger than ever. But at the same time, after hearing Ryouta’s story about his view on life, perhaps there is some trust there. He did risk his life to save her after all. Hopefully the doubt will pass away. What should be doubted on the other hand is the situation in Tyrannos Japan. There are a lot of things going on in their enterprise. The way they’re handling their conspiracy certainly doesn’t sound good. Hopefully there’ll be an end to their plans soon. With only four episodes left of this show, things seem to become more exciting!

Random thoughts:

  • Murasaki hates men, yet it seemed like she was going to attack Himiko and not Ryouta while they were sleeping.
  • Oda Nobutaka and Kira Kousuke are returning next week. That means trouble…
  • I think the helicopter hijacking picture is really cool!
  • For being such a hardcore gamer, Ryouta doesn’t like wearing merchandise clothing. He must be a hipster (like me)!
  • Why on earth would you want to split up to look for someone in the dark? That’s the dumbest idea ever.
  • It worries me that this show might not have a proper conclusion because the manga is still on-going and there are only four episodes left.
  • Dat punch!
  • Full-length shots: 3, 6

  1. Looking forward to when Himiko will actually tell Sakamoto that she IS his Himiko :D.

Oh great, psycho kid is back next week :P. It also looks like Sakamoto recognises sunglasses dude in the preview. Perhaps there is some shared history there?

I’m also interested to see how the writers will wrap things up by episode 12 without rushing things.

    1. thing became very complicated. The storyline were always changes. One thing for sure, the survival of the fittest. The strong survive the weak shall perish. Definitely just like previous anime series back date on 90’s Battle Royale.

Don’t worry, there is an obvious end point in the manga that just happens to fit in with the current timing of the anime as ending episode.

  4. I though it was kind of cool how most of the episode is about how woman playing the game shouldn’t trust men, yet in the beginning they show a woman totally taking advantage and then killing off a man.

  5. Well, between chips looted of recently from Masashi and those collected by Taira dont they have the dreaded 6? or even 7?
The conspiracy the size Tyrannos is running is bound to crumble, eventually. the more complicated the ops, the more points of failure, trails of money left, accidents waiting to happen, security leaks… this wont end well for Tyrannos, I’m sure. If someone was reading manga for Deadman Wonderland, I mean of what eventually Makina did.
