「勇者、旅立つ。」 (Yuusha, Tabidatsu.)
“The Hero Journeys Forth.”

Perhaps the most important thing for a comedy short to possess is good humour. Does Senyu. fit the bill? Hell yeah! Perhaps this will actually be Yamakan’s chance to redeem himself after what happened with Fractale!

Senyu. does not boast a complex plot, but it does still have some charm in that department. One thousand years ago, the hero Creasion sealed away Demon King Rchimedes. Now demons have begun to appear in the world once more and the King (Ogino Seiro), along with his Cabinet Minister (Sasaki Hiroo) sends out seventy-five people who look sort of like they might be the hero’s descendants to deal with the threat. We follow Alba (Shimono Hiro), the forty-fifth of these heroes, and his partner Ross (Nakamura Yuuichi) as they set out on their adventure.

This first episode was funny. Genuinely funny. Between the multiple instances of meta humour, ranging from screwing with the character titles onscreen to the conversations with the narrator (delivered by the wonderful Nakata Jouji no less), and the many RPG gags, there was plenty of amusement to be had for me as a video game fan. The dynamic between the two leads helps a lot in this respect, with Alba being a completely useless hero and Ross not being remotely interested in helping out.

Visually, it’s actually surprisingly interesting what with the clash of styles coming from the traditional animation, the stick figures, and the wonderfully stylistic paintings. The animation itself is not spectacular, but that’s no surprise given these are shorts that run for only four minutes and thirty seconds! All in all, it’s a decent watch with very little time investment. If you’re into fantasy – RPGs in particular – there’s absolutely no reason not to check out the first episode at the least!

tl;dr: @MoombaDS – Short but funny. I like this anime already! #Senyu

  1. This season we see not only a plethora of “all female cast” animes (admittedly, not my cup of tea), but many shorts as well.

In my experience, shorts are almost always small doses of highly concentrated fun (Thermae Roman) and I’m glad that this too follows suit 😉

  2. The show truly delivered. It was so much fun to watch. Very enjoyable characters, awesome sense of humor and excellent direction/storyboarding. As someone mentioned already, the clash of different styles makes Senyuu very unique and interesting. The 5 minute length does not do justice to the show. More, plzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

btw, I really wonder what the OP is about, surely is not another dance, right?

  3. I watched most of the shorts coming out, and true to form, I found them lacking. This on the other hand…yeah, it really was genuinely amusing. It’s basically a big parody of videogames, and I loved the voice actors too.

Guess I’ll watch these everytime one pops up on Crunchyroll.

  4. Thanks for giving an intro to this; I would’ve skipped it otherwise and I think this might be the only show other than Maou I’ll be watching this season.

I’m sad that it’s so short, but hopefully that will keep it entertaining every time. Loved the mix of animation styles (also the little dialogue screen reminiscent of Lucas Arts games had me rolling. Clearly those were the choices for Ross and not for Alba. ‘who gives a crap?/ dou demo ii’ indeed.)

  5. I enjoyed it. The jokes were delivered right and loved the play on RPG elements.
It’s rare for Nakamura Yuuichi to play the boke but Shimono Hiro is in his element as the tsukkomi. Great combo. And you can never go wrong with Nakata Jouji as a narrator. Oh wait, Amagami ._.
It’s no Poyopoyo but it will do.

Lol Wooser. I dropped that though even if it had Mamoru Miyano.
