「愚兄賢弟」

You pretty much know what to expect here. Azazel-san, to put it mildly, is an extremely crude, raunchy and over-the-top comedy that never fails to give me a few good laughs. While it never quite made a splash with English-speaking audiences (and I don’t expect it to), the first season was a huge commercial success and a surprise hit for Production I.G.  The Blu-ray/DVD releases sold a whopping 9000 copies in 2011 and to put that into context, it’s a sales figure than exceeds those of Hanasaku Iroha, Yuru Yuri and even Guilty Crown.

A mash-up of supernatural and comedic genres, “He’s Calling For You Azazel” centers on detective Akutabe (Namikawa Daisuke) and his assistant Sakuma Rinko (Satou Rina) who specialize in summoning demons to solve mystery cases. Azazel (Onosaka Masaya), the namesake Demon of Lust and his many cohorts from the underworld are frequently called upon to do their lowly bidding and hilarity ensues when the demons give rise to havoc with some of the most ridiculous powers that I’ve ever heard of, whether it’s causing impotence or making any living creature poop at will. Clearly, Azazel-san is not for the faint-hearted, but if you have a high enough threshold for dirty jokes, distasteful humor and butt-ugly characters (the mere sight of them inspire laughter in me), I have no doubt you will find the show a real treat.

Continuing from where the first season left off, the deceased Demon of Wrath, Moloch (Genda Tesshou) has become quite a sensation of the plushier variety among teenage girls. Such a development gave Beelzebub (Kamiya Hiroshi) an idea to bring an end to Akutabe’s reign of terror and as usual, the hapless Azazel tags along for the much-needed support. Simply put, this is not a good idea and no one messes around with Akutabe who is arguably, the most “demonic” of them all. I’m hard-pressed to see how this end well for our demon trio, and you might have to look elsewhere if you’re expecting a happily-ever-after moral tale.

Like most comedies, it’s hard to put a finger on just why Azazel-san clicks with me and this is just one of those shows you need to experience firsthand. Clocking at only 12 minutes an episode, Azazel-san makes the most of its limited running time by providing some of the best deadpan jokes and slapstick humor in anime. The great laugh-out-loud moments, typically of a more adult or obscene (My butt hurts!) nature, are what drive the show and I am certainly expecting a good dose of smart gags along the journey of this latest season.

  1. Soon Sakuma will surpass even Akutabe… hopefully. There is also seem to be lesser of those hideous comic characters with distorted faces. But the ones here is 10x better looking then a certain evil flower.

    Cybersteel
  2. This anime and Shingen no Kyojin was what I was looking forward to seeing this season. I’m so glad it was popular enough to get a 2nd season 🙂

And ouch! That butt stab looks so painful!

    Drift
  3. Hmm from a reply above it seems like Drift is only watching 2 animes from this season, and basically im watching almost every anime thats coming out except for 3 of them. So am I a really big fucking otaku!!! or is there nothing wrong with that?
