「あたし…みんなのこと見えてるから」 (Atashi Minna no Koto Mieteru Kara)
“Because I Can See Them All”

Continuing from last week, Misaka finally meets Accelerator and… things don’t turn out too well. But, I guess when you’re dealing with someone who can control vectors—which pretty much everything in existence has—there’s only so much you can do. As it turns out, it ends up being the MISAKA sisters that bail her out of the situation instead—with quite the impressive showing—which brings with it both a notable sense of irony… and the hammering in of the reality that there’s nothing Misaka can do against Accelerator himself…

…which arguably, is what this episode is about: accepting reality—that is, understanding what it is that you can and can’t do. Because in the end, what Shinobu says this episode ends up being absolutely correct. It’s not so much about who’s right and wrong as it is what you’re going to do about it. One can argue all day about the ethics behind what’s going on, the definition of what it means to be human (and what it means to live), and about human morality—but when you’re dealing with people that treat life as equivalent to something worth 180,000 yen and don’t see themselves as murderers, words ain’t really worth a darn. And so, as Misaka realizes herself, there’s no point lamenting the decision she made in the past and no point in sitting there feeling sorry. She sowed the seeds, so she’ll take responsibility—because she’s the Railgun, and you don’t mess with Misaka Mikoto. She might not be able to beat Accelerator, but she can still give those behind the experiment a darn good beating—even if she needs to hunt down each and every one of the 20+ facilities to do so.

Suffice to say though, I gotta say—this was arguably the single best episode of either Railgun S or Railgun in general. Emotions were running high all throughout, especially during the Accelerator vs. Misaka fight—heck, even I was getting pretty emotional near the end even though I watched Index and knew what was coming—and it’s something that combined with the more complex topics of “what makes someone human” and “how does one determine what’s right and wrong” to make this an exceptionally memorable episode. The bit with Shinobu recapping the events that made it so she could no longer consider the MISAKA sisters just guinea pigs was just extravagantly done and served to really hammer in the fact that they’re not just a collection of shared experiences and information—they’re living, breathing beings capable of so much more. Indeed, her comment about how she realized the MISAKA sisters were theoretically even more human than her was exceptionally powerful, and just demonstrated how it’s not the sisters that aren’t human—but the scientists behind the experiment that are inhuman.

There’s just a lot here this week, and it’s something that’ll undoubtedly carry on into the coming weeks as Misaka presumably starts doing what she does best—blowing things up. With great friends at her side as well, I really do pity the fools that think they’d get away with doing this experiment in the first place.

  1. I don’t get why Accelerator has so many fans. The guy sweats serial killer creepy from every pore. At least we should be seeing Touma (and maybe Index) pretty soon I would think.

      1. Oh there was something similar. I should know, because I posted it last week.

Remember folks, those of us who haven’t followed the novels or the mangas (and I didn’t watch the Index anime either) have no reason to think that there is anything even vaguely likeable about the guy.

        Wanderer
      2. The opening image of both seasons is a title card saying “A Certain Magical Index – Side Story.” Even the creators of the show expect the audience to have an understanding of the Index world/plot. So “folks” are simply going along with the creators of Railgun and assuming viewers have watched/read the canon.

    1. simple because he is badass and fans love badass character
anti-hero always favored by many people included me
Touma is far too generic character,my reason like this series only because Accelerator and Mikoto
Touma….meh only because he is MC and i caught interest for him only with his imagine breaker ability that’s all

      1. Touma, a generic character? Those words, is it possible to use them in a sentence like that? Are you watching the same anime as everyone else?Oh, I know what it is, you’re thinking of somebody else.

        Magoiichi
      2. Maybe it’s because he sees Touma winning all the time against powerful others…

But I just remembered: he lost to Tsuchimikado(?) before in the Fallen Angel’s arc.

      3. Didn’t Touma got his ass handed to him by Kanzaki Kaori in Index season 1 too? Plus how can Kamijou “The Preacher” Touma be any generic MC? How many generic MC is capable of beating down both men and women, girls and boys alike without any discrimination?

      4. generic my ass , he get to hospital so frequently , he got extrem bad luck , and we got fyou bitch / don’t care attitude , he is badass than accel who is number 1 , he punch accel in da face lol anti-hero lol he is a bad guy untill touma punch him admit it he is also going o be kill if touma doesn’t come.

      5. It’s not a matter of Touma being a generic character. I mean look, Kirito’s one of the most generic hero protagonists ever, but he’s written in a way that is likable.

My greatest dislike of Touma and the entire Index series is that he never changes and is far to submissive to everything that’s not world destroying. And also Index, I don’t like Index. Sure she’s cute and all, but for the majority of the series all she does is bug Touma and eat Ice Cream. Now if Index had more Misaka and Touma working together and less of Touma tanking magic attacks to deliver the Fist of Preacherynessblah, then it would be a lot better. In my eyes that is.

I was planning on reading all 27 volumes of Index until I found out that there’s no romance, nor doe Touma really develop into anything.

I think a reason why people like to think of Touma as boring is that he is a blank slate. He doesn’t remember anything and thus doesn’t really have a back story. The motivation for him through out the series is to
        1. get the church to stop bugging him.
        2. protect the new girl just because.

To me, most of Touma’s fights are kinda boring because there’s not much involved besides fist fighting.

      6. “taiyo” i understand that kamijou does have his fair share of haters but lets not forget that he also have his fans. if kamijou wasn’t popular he wouldn’t have bested accelerator, 3-4 in LN popularity poll and still manage to stay in the top 5 after index season 2 ended and with all these fans asking for more kamijou screen time in railgun. i fear that some fans might be overreacting with kamijou hate (just like kuroko and index hate). i even asked many Japanese fans who live in japan if kamijou was popular and they always gave me the same reply stating that he was “pretty popular” or “very popular”. while i do admit kamijou has little character development but steady, he does have an interesting back-story but kamachi decided to make it short and quick without a backflash either in the angle fall arc and the fact that he have lame abilities. but kamijou is not ment to develop but rather help develop other characters into becoming a better person while he stays in the light and just because hes abilities are lame doesn’t mean hes fights aren’t very good either as well as having very interesting interactions with other characters. touma a decent typical shounen lead who is quite admirable i mean sure hes preachy but you can easily get used to it if you bother to try and make use of some of your time as well.(i just felt like posting this to help make touma fans know he is quite popular and to piss of quite a few touma haters as well).

      7. i forget to mention also while i do see touma haters i have seen to many touma fans that even the blogospehere couldn’t compete with the haters he have there with the amount i seen and even /a/ manga and anime fourm. i notice my last reply got a thumps down probably to to a guy who have some intense hatred towards kamijou that he decided to deny the truth :). well whatever satisfy you touma haters i guess you can believe what you want but i done my research and found prove that hes popular so i got noting much to say towards any of you since you won’t even try to accept the facts that he does have allot of fans.

      1. Yeah, everyone seem to be forgetting her. I haven’t seen her even in a meme, though there are quite a bit of last order and Accelerator memes. Then again, it can’t be helped those two are so cute/good together.

    2. I’m not a fan of Accel either, even after the character shift he had in Index where he becomes a sort of anti-hero. The dude is over the top crazy and for some reason, I find it entertaining when he fucks the hell out of people. Obviously he got the turn-around after getting the beat-down from Touma.

I doubt Index will appear in Railgun’s show. Even in the Sister Arc in Index S1, she had nothing to do with it. Heck, I’d appreciate it if she does not appear in this show, period.

    3. He gets better… or at least lest batshit crazier which makes him swerve from villainous psychopath towards heroic well psychopath… Last Order really helped him mellow out somehow.

    4. That’s because he is so STRONG and so Anti-heroric that he would be a perfect protagonist. Plus he is also a lolicon says Misaka Misaka as she blushes while thinking how much of a good main character he would make.

      1. Didn’t we learn enough from Liefeld’s older work and other 90s comic books already that simple hurrdurr badass hurrdurr strong hurrdurr antihero DOES NOT make a good protagonist?

    5. Because Accelerator is every chunibyou’s wetdream. Admit it, when you were going through that phase, didn’t you wish you had awesome supernatural powers to deflect anything? LOL

    6. He only became likeable during the 2nd half of Index 1 and throughout the second season of Index for everything he did which was actually heroic…somewhat psychotic, but heroic. IDK, he’s just an ass but also awesome.

    7. The reason Accel has fans is because of the things he did AFTER this arc. So unless you watch and/or read the novel, of course you won’t understand why.

I myself don’t hate or like him particularly. Edgy as fuck when it comes to LO, won’t hesitate to bury anyone who crosses him or his girls.

      The Moondoggie
    8. He basically becomes an anti-hero later, though with somewhat ridiculous circumstances

Accelerator’s road to redemption always struck me as poorly written. Show Spoiler ▼

Mind you his later stories are really good and do his character a service, but I still think his initial character shift was stupid.

It’s really how I would describe this franchise. Hit and Miss. Its either going to be REALLY GOOD (like this current arc we are on) or REALLY BAD (see any arc that involves Index).

    9. I like villains and antiheroes for their badassery, their powers, etc.I only dislike crappy villians and antiheroes that are overtly generic.Unless it’s for comedy relief.

Accelarator is just another one of those badasses.Personally, besides his hax, I like his over the top personality, especially his crazy voice.

I still hate him for killing Misaka 9982, she reminded me of my favorite Misaka Sister 10032.

    10. author make misaka extremely weak in this anime. Electro master rule in all domain against Vector, the problem is , her alias is railgun so basically she think railgun is the strongest attack she has, while I disagree , if author learn to include physic and biology in this manga , Misaka would be able to use electric with lighning speed + can burn accel from inside. Vector isn’t that powerful since in the world we also have scalar quantity and the fact that accel also have fixed vector in his body(blood flow , nerve flow, hormone flow since he is so emo) while all of this is control by electric in body , if Misaka can really control electricity she can draw eletric from accel’s Mind and fry him alive. + she can control Mind , make some magnetic bomb and all. but no we got to stick with railgun.TT
I wonder if Kuroko cn win agianst accel cuz teleport a knife in accel body equal 0 vector(can’t deflect) and if accel come at close range teleport is faster and more unpredictable.

      pokpok
      1. Even if you say that Misaka can try to control the electric signals within Accelerator, she still needs to apply an electric attack to him to be able to do that, which of course will be redirected by his auto-reflect barrier. His barrier covers his entire body so there’s no way her attack can penetrate it.
Actually, I don’t really think she can do that as that requires much more calculation on her part which she isn’t able to do. Accelerator has the fastest calculation ability within the Level 5s and even he had a hard time reprogramming Last Order. It’s even evident here in this episode that Misaka took a long time in manipulating the iron sand to attack Accelerator. Manipulating electric currents within the body is close to impossible for her.
And electricity is still a vector quantity. It still travels with a direction and of course possesses magnitude so it’s still not above his powers.
        So no.

And see my post below for the Kuroko and her teleportation.

      2. Moreover didn’t Accelerator’s power work inside his body too?
That’s why he has no pigmentation or what’ever.

And his auto barrier reflect everything Accelerator willing or not, the guy floats while sleeping…

Now I know why Misaka was rather shaken in Index I and why she felt helpless. Lets not forget the disagreement or arguement she had with Touma before he want to save 10033 (or was it 10032?)

  2. The best part of the episode, I think, is when one of the Misaka sisters describe her love of the outside world. When Shinobu’s eyes widen I felt my eyes widen as well. It’s so simple but from then on I can’t see them as anything but human beings.

  3. I just rewatched the Sisters arc in Index S1, and I have more appreciation now for this arc more than ever. Now it makes more sense why Misaka looked so dejected before. I just wonder whether they’ll have to show Touma kicking Accel’s ass again for this one. #IveNeverReadTheRailgunManga

  4. I can’t help but find it hard to believe that this is the exact same animation team that did season 1. They’ve adapted so well to the change of mood between the two seasons that I can’t help but tip my hat to them.

It wasn’t even that long ago that JC Staff was where adaptations went to die because of all their deviations and filler. Now they’ve put out four straight shows that have downright impressed me.

  6. I think teleporter user like Kuroko has a change to kill Accelerator because vector change only apply to the outer body of accelerator. She can teleport iron rod or lethal poison inside Accelerator body.

This only my personal opinion,no offence to Accelerator fan.

    esper level 5 #6
      1. I kind of agree with you (i thumb up with accel beat tamaki)that doesn’t even count as a fight but move point isn’t powerful than kuroko, she may beat kuroko but that’s because her power is more likely to win against teleporter. she can’t even teleport herself but if kuroko fight accel she can teleport knife truck and stuff inside accel body and that will be 0 vector lol i can’t understand why author can pull cheap explanation like vector cover all inside and outside, vector can accel / deccel/ and reflet don’t work with 0 vector(teleport is even worst than in space) knife in stomach can’t accel out or decel or reflet , but anyway kuroko has to hit and run to win and teleport like crazy out ofaccl aoe damage , i guesse it will be air fight

        pokpok
      2. Move Point is much more powerful that Kuroko’s teleportation. Kuroko needs direct contact to teleport things to serve as her reference point. Awaki’s power can teleport anything within her range and doesn’t need any reference points. She’s actually one of the potential espers to become a level 5. She is just hindered by her trauma so she cannot become one.
And again, teleportation in Index still operates with vector manipulation so no, Kuroko cannot beat Accelerator.

      1. Show Spoiler ▼

    1. Noo, you have spoken the forbidden! Never, ever say that anyone but Touma has any chance of beating Accelerator! It just brings out the LN readers who will gleefully shoot you down.

      Alhazred23
    2. Accelerator’s power of “vector change” can LITERALLY change ANY ESP power into whatever direction/reflection that he wants. His power can literally control/manipulate all other ESP power when his body comes in contact with it, ALONG with the other BS power that he have. (This is of course, when he understands the logic behind the ESP calculations. But he’s really good at this.) Teleport can’t do crap. Even Misaki #5’s brainwashing can’t do crap either. (He’ll just reflect the brainwashing signals)

And don’t say magic either. LN proven that when magic gets hits by his reflection, they just disappear. Probably because it’s not ESP and thus doesn’t fully reverse it but still an unnatural force that he can control to a certain extent.

You need the all-hack everything power of Touma’s right hand to beat Accelerator’s power.

  7. I know that Uriharu and Saten are kept in despite not being in this part of the manga because of their popularity, but was Harue really necessary?

Otherwise, loving this season so far. Hope it leads to a 3rd season of Index.

    Da5id
    1. From the looks of the preview for next week we will be getting some helpings of filler for the other Railgun girls all throughout the Sisters arc so that they can stretch it probably to the end of the first cour. Given that, maybe they can use her to at least help make it interesting filler (hopefully.)

      Alhazred23
      1. If I were to think of a funny filler episode, it’d be if they tried to do the same kind of experiment with Kuroko clones.

Harue needs more development! Or at the very least more personality than “the cute one”. They’re ALL the cute one!

        Da5id
      2. Well, they made a big deal about how they’d all be in the same group for their study abroad experience (Liberal Arts City side story), so that might be cour 2. Haruue might get some development there, since they can do a lot more deviation with that story than the main Railgun plot because it has few direct ties to Index.

        Alhazred23
      1. That actually adds to my issue with Harue because it just seems even more like pandering. I wouldn’t mind if she had actual development and really added something to the main group, but for the most part she’s just there to be there. As Da5id says, she’s an unnecessary character at this point.

  9. Damn….it’s episodes like this that make me wonder, “Holy snap, why cant railgun/index be this good all the time in terms of execution, characters, and plot”. There is no argument hahaha, this was the best ep of railgun/index in my personal opinion as it represents what is actually good about both of those series’ when it tries. I think some of the credit has to go to Nakai tatsuyuki for being the director of railgun in that he knows how to portray subtle emotions from characters without making it too over the top and can direct a story with a proper pace. I personally love the index/railgun lore (i find the science side more interesting as it is a lot darker and less convoluted than the magic side) but the flaws of the execution of the series’ is what keeps it at just an enjoyable show instead of a great show. This weeks ep is starting to change that. If this keeps up we are in for one hell of a season Show Spoiler ▼

  10. One of the best adaptations that JC staff has ever done (so far)! Why the hell couldn’t they have done the same for the 2 Index seasons?
And holy shit Accelerator & Mikoto’s fight is insane, especially with her screams and his “lolwut that’s all u got?” attitude

  11. Great episode!!!
I’ve always wondered since manga’s ch. 24, what would Accelerator’s introduction scene look like. It’s a shame that they changed it a bit (if you look at the pv in the end of ep. 5 you’ll see that Misaka’s eyes(pupil’s) change when Accelerator speaks to her). It’s still awesom(but it could’ve been even better).

  12. So far, the execution, animation and graphics for Railgun S has been over the top as opposed to Index I, II, Railgun and couple of other JC Staff release in recent times.

Really love the artistic direction in Railgun S

    c2710
    1. I know it’s been amazing; everything from the lighting, the art style, the fluid movements, and the backgrounds have been significantly upgraded from the first season. Perhaps JC staff landed into a shit ton of money when advertising the Index movie or something; and since they have been only working on two shows this season, their budget should be more than enough to cover 24 eps of railgun while keeping the quality this good. If the first season of railgun was any indication, it’s most likely that this season will also keep the amazing animation quality and art direction as well.

  16. This is the second time that someone has come out unscathed from Mikoto’s Railgun attacks. At least Touma was cool about it, even feigning defeat, though it ended up pissing her off even more.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRL2THebQlg

But Accelerator wasn’t the sort to show mercy, and maybe for the first time in her life, Mikoto may have experienced what it means to be near death had she not get bailed out by her clones.

    Anonymous
    1. I’m inclined to say he did show mercy. Normally, when Accelerator’s Reflect kicks in, it fires the attack straight back at the target, killing them if it’s of a lethal nature (observe the Sister’s sniping attacks on him).

However, in this case, the Railgun at close range was reflected to (narrowly) miss Misaka. I can only assume this was done on purpose.

Granted, it may not have been out of a sense of mercy, and more because he just wanted to mess around, but still. Even when Accelerator was first introduced, he has some (slight) hangups about killing people unrelated to the dark side of Academy City.

      Rasen
  17. What exactly does Accelerator’s power do? Is it “as long as it’s moving in a direction he can change it’s tragectory?” From the looks of he really is unmatched by all except the guy who can null his powers

    gawrshness
    1. Vector manipulation. Anything with a magnitude and direction, meaning vectors, can be manipulated. Passively it allows things to be reflected, meaning anything thrown at him gets thrown back in the opposite direction. When he actively uses it, he can change the magnitude of forces as well, hence those superhuman attacks like dropping that crate on #9982.
And aside from TouMAN, there are only a handful of people able to bypass that and defeat him. Index II’s Kihara Amata showed a method that i effective but kinda unreliable to hurt him. There are also others later on but those haven’t been animated yet.

    2. There are things that can hurt Accelerator, but most classic weapons due to their nature are obviously useless. He just can repel any kinetic or energy attack back at the source, and the stronger the attack, the stronger the reflected damage…
Still he is human, needs to breathe eat and drink. Someone in the spirit of the Mage Killer would have found a way to dispatch him.
The problem is, the powers that be in the Academy City (for now) want him alive and well for the experiment.
And then there is Show Spoiler ▼

  18. I forgot how overpowered and boring accelerator and touma are (you could argue that you can by pass his right hand but he as a kid still beats up grown trained adults or does his naruto speech which makes the characters whom are the villains more worthless.)
I hope they use this chance to change stuff for the anime, change focus ontop misaaka taking out the facilities etc, or maybe have the other level 5 and misaka’s friends think of something. if not, I hope they steam roll past touma and accelerator and move on to what makes this series good (and that’s more or less no index main characters/magic as unfortunately, the characters became one dimensional and the plot a bit silly (to me atleast)

    Sporadic
  19. Pity there’s no screencap of Kuroko with her hair down, she’s surprisingly cuter (and less crazy) that way.

Saten-san shows her perceptiveness by being the first to change the topic when she noticed Mikoto’s discomfort at being reminded of seeing her clone die as well as her near death experience with Accelerator (even if Accel was merely toying with her, to her it did feel like he was going to finish her off in order to speed up his shift to Lv6). Uiharu, Kuroko and Haruue were also wise to follow quickly, comforting their friend in distress.

    1. that noting but a mere opinion. you state that hes shallow fun but i view him as one of the most likable protagonist. touma rather base on a mere opinion then hated that for sure(even stated in tv trope the only character with a hatedom is shiage) touma is both well loved and somewhat hated with fans. he has a pretty decent fanbase(bigger then kuroko and probably accelerator though i doubt about him being more popular then accelerator but just a hunch right there seeing as how he keeps besting him in popularity polls).

    1. Hence lies the essential problem with Toma. I personally like Toma because he is a stand up guy and pretty much embodies the moral compass that i have what with him sticking his neck out for anyone in need. The problem is that although he is the guy you want to root for, at the end of the day, he is a bland character; there isnt much depth with him which is why he never truly compels me when he is on screen. He is fun to watch…but that’s all it is; shallow fun.

  25. Time to be the anti-fun nazi. 😛

Killing 20,000 clones at the rate of 1 per night (which appears to be the fastest the current rate can possibly be) would take somewhere in the region of 55 years. (For Accelerator to have even gone through 8911 of them by the time Shinobu’s flashback occurs, they must have been throwing MISAKAs en masse at him for a while.) At the current rate, it would take something like 27 years for the experiment to finish, at the very least.

Apparently some scientists can’t count. 😛

    1. thats why I hate level grind… 😛
but, if Accelerator would be killing 10 clones daily, the experiment would have lasted 5,5 years, definitely reasonable timetable (he can easily dispatch single clone within few minutes)

    2. The scientists wanted Accelerator to be experienced in all types of combat, and in episode 4 they showed a room full of dead Misaka clones.

It just happened that he wasn’t fighting more than one clone during this episode. (I think they have some kind of training schedule?)

    3. He definitely wasn’t killing a clone a day, as the people above already mentioned. Actually, seeing as this one experiment (number 9982) happens on the 15th, and the experiment number 10032 happens on the 21th, he kills 50 clones in about 5 days, which averages at 10 clones a day and is consistent with the possible length of 5.5 year to the experiment, proposed by ewok40k. And that’s pretty reasonable indeed.

      1. One issue I have with this whole concept is wouldn’t it be much more efficient to just have him practice over and over with the various actual level 5s? He shouldn’t have to actually KILL them to gain experience like you would in a game.

Essentially all they’re doing is throwing a bunch of girls with a moderate degree of control over the electromagnetic field and guns at him. Wouldn’t he get the same or more experience from, say, fighting armies and guerrilla fighters?

There’s also the issue that they *have* to be gouging their eyes out not to see: if they do actually manage to make him hit level 6, he’s not exactly going to be a benign power.

      2. It’s not about efficiency or gaining experience or practicing. It’s about doing the thing that was predicted and dictated by the Tree Diagram supercomputer, which is to either kill 128 Level 5 Misakas or kill 20,000 Level 3 Misakas in order for Accelerator to become Level 6. That was the only way according to the Tree Diagram. The first one is proven to be impossible so they resorted to the second one.
The whole point of Academy City’s research is obtaining SYSTEM or the mythical Level 6 and no one has done it so far. If it was as easy as practicing with the other Level 5s then they wouldn’t have bothered with this in the first place. And Aleister wouldn’t have bothered at all with his “grand plan” and scheming all sorts of stuff within his tube.
