「指向法《ブルー・ローズ》」 (Shikou-hou “Buruu Rouzu”)
“Blue Rose”

Mostly funny, mostly silly, this episode was roundly hilarious while still elaborating on character back stories and delivering us to the stage of Kuuhaku’s biggest victory yet. Hopefully.

Feel is an S! Jibril is an M!

No two ways about it, Feel is surprisingly brutal. From wishing Elven Guarde would burn down to casually revealing Clammy’s insecurities, she just does not fuck around! It’s an interesting contrast given the obvious love she has for Clammy, but it also makes her for more entertaining than the doting parent / Clammy-sexual I thought she was going to be.

But best of all was still her forcing Jibril to get down on her hands and knees and lick her feet. S! Feel is an S because she made Jibril lick her shoes! She truly is surprisingly brutal…though the real surprise was when Jibril decided she liked it. M! Jibril is an M because she gets excited being ordered around by her masters! Yukarin must be having sooooo much fun voicing Jibril.

Speaking of, random aside: Feel’s is perhaps my least favorite Noto Mamiko role. Not the character, the voice she’s using for her. Not sure why, it just feels a little too…chirpy, perhaps. It fits Feel’s character, it’s just not a home run Noto Mamiko voice in my book. Not a big downside though.

Less Oppai, Mo Problems

Clammy, you can’t act all recalcitrant with personal information around a guy who has your memories! A-Cup Angst (trope!) is one of those tropes that so pervades anime despite the fact that I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in real life. Maybe it’s just because I have little patience for emotionally needy and/or hysterically insecure people, but breast size truly is a silly thing to worry about. I usually find it funny in anime though, not because it makes sense, but because the deeply personal and slightly ecchi (but not too perverted!) nature of it is fertile ground for adorably embarrassed reactions. And Clammy delivers in spades! Don’t worry Clammy, you’re fine the way you are. It’s a status symbol! A rarity! (trope!)

Master & Slave

Briefly: the exploration of Elven Guarde’s society and the revelation that Clammy is actually Feel’s slave pretty much stands on its own. What I like about this series is that the different races are pulling from Earth cultures in you don’t always expect. The Warbeasts are based on Japanese culture, which I wouldn’t have necessarily guessed (though it doesn’t not make sense either), while the Elves, while still being forest creatures, feel more like they’re based on the Ancient Greeks than Tolkien’s Wood-elves (though there’s some of that too). It gives the world a fresh flavor, which I appreciate.

“You’ve found your wings, haven’t you?”

From the sound of Sora and Clammy’s discussion in the secret chamber, it’s Shiro that’s once again going to take center stage against the Warbeasts. That’s why Clammy didn’t think they could win – she only has the memories from half of Kuuhaku, and that’s not enough. But what I really appreciated was how they bantered back and forth, using the memories they got from each other to justify touching moments and deliver hilarious jabs. Sora invoking how, if he makes a mistake, Shiro is there (just as Feel said the same thing to a younger Clammy) would have been aggravatingly convenient if it weren’t so thoroughly justified, which I found quiet masterful.

Then Clammy jabs back with “You’ve found your wings, haven’t you?” and calls Sora o-ni-ii-cha-n!? HNG~! Finally, someone got a rise out of Sora, and it was awesome! C-Can I ship everyone with everyone? Sora x Steph, Feel x Clammy, Feel x Jibril, Sora x Clammy, Jibril x Masters, Steph x shampoo bottle, Shiro x Stilt–I mean, erh. Moving on…

Observers

My my, it’s easy to clear the road when you have a Flugel on your roof. I find psychology to be extremely interesting, so the way Sora used it to set the stage for their game with the Eastern Federation was fascinating. Not only did he bet the Race Piece to draw Clammy and Feel to his side, but he used it to make all of Imanity suspect that Kuuhaku was working with the Eastern Federation. And he’s right – the confident ally will be complacent, but the suspicious ally (whether they want to be your ally or not) will watch you like a hawk. Between Imanity’s suspicious population and Clammy / Feel, it will be hard for the Eastern Federation to cheat blatantly, which is to Kuuhaku’s favor. Bonus points: if they win when all of Imanity is watching, everyone in Elkia might finally unite behind Kuuhaku, and come to believe in the potential of humanity as well. That would be sweet.

Looking Ahead – Imanity is Doomed!

The path to victory seems simple – either win the game (unlikely), or far more likely, catch the Eastern Federation cheating. No one outside of the Eastern Federation is anywhere near as familiar with video games as Kuuhaku is, so they have a chance of finding the ripples in the game, especially with Shiro on their side. That is, if Kuuhaku can get their shit together. My question right now is how did the Eastern Federation know what Tokyo look like? It could be coincidence (unlikely) or they could have some connection to Earth, but more likely I think they pulled it from Sora and Shiro’s mind, selecting the battlefield which Kuuhaku would be the weakest on. That won’t stand though, no way. I look forward to watching Kuuhaku and their team surprise us once again…and for us to find out what that “special spell” Sora placed on Steph was.

tl;dr: @StiltsOutLoud – Funny, silly, sexy, & hilarious–but still there was plot as the game with the Eastern Federation begins. Kuuhaku! #nogenora 10

Random thoughts:

  • Shiro wanted to be patted on the head too :3
  • Clammy, you can’t fool somebody who knows your three sizes, not even with magic! (Damn censor steam!!) You don’t have to worry though, Shiro. You’re, what, 11? You’ve got some time.
  • Ignore the cameras, nothing going on here, move along…
  • A Steph-like Clammy if fine too!
  • Wait, so they’re zapping them into the game, but they haven’t figured out airplanes yet? I guess technology really does flow different rates when magic is involved.
  • By the way, since I never explicitly stated this, overall I felt like this was one of the weaker episodes. Not weaker because it wasn’t as well done, just weaker because the material wasn’t as strong. It’s necessary to set up the coming events though, and I had some good laughs, so it’s no problem. You need breaks to make the peaks even greater, and even home runs every swing can get boring.

  1. Non-spoiler about the game’s setting: Show Spoiler ▼

Stilts edit: knowingly directing people’s attention in the right direction is a spoiler of sorts. Please let people figure these things out on their own, or guess with other non-LN readers.

    1. Simple meta logic would dictate that no, Kuuhaku won’t lose. They’re doing a pretty good job of obscuring the “How”, and making us just slightly doubt whether they’ll manage it at all.

      Stilts
  3. Last episode someone called Jibril embodiment of political incorrectness. I wish to make a case about that being a heavy understatement. Sora’s plan was almost ruined because she got a bump who knows how many thousand years ago! It’s the elves’ own fault though, one does not simply create a minor inconvinience to her and live to tell the tale.

Feel is definitely an awesome… Best childhood mother figure friend?
I agree with Stilts, Noto Mamiko has done better voice acting before.

    Anonymosity
    1. I was curious why Fil was so (relatively) easy to forgive Jibril. Her backstory and attitude toward her own race explained it though. She said she preferred if that elven race disappeared.

The hate toward Jibril was pretty token all around.

      Drasca
      1. i think “jibril event” happen 1000 years ago and now that the situation have changed, there is no point getting mad at her, Jibril is a “cute” weapon of mass destruction after all.

The awkwardness at that moment aside, that stick figure of Jibril had me LOL-ing..

    Well I think Jibril’s not just a masochist, she’s also S.
Key: Her delight at destroying some Elf territory upon being dealt minor pain.

Jibril could probably be a pervert as well.
    Key: Show Spoiler ▼

(That spoiler is LN script not covered yet by the anime, and I think it probably won’t, but its minimal spoilers; just the usual joking with little overall plot revealed).
Jibril’s personality aside, chances of her accidentally finding some ero-stash in Sora’s tablet and going all “Master, watashi, kininarimasu” for applied theory isn’t impossible. :p

As for adaptation pacing, Madhouse is doing rather decently. Faithful, and unlikely to have any rushing for the remaining two episodes..

      1. Well honestly saying, I’ve been watching anime for a while now, and Jibril flew all the way to the top of my favourite female characters list. :p

Seems like the screenshots preview for Ep11 is out on the official website.
        Link: (http://ngnl.jp/story/story11.html)

Having already read the LNs, I find the one with Jibril in it ridiculously funny. :3

    1. While Jibril does seem to have been overreacting, you have to give props to the elves.

Jibril took a hydrogen bomb to her face unscathed. ANYthing that can damage a Flugel must be ridiculously powerful.

  5. …but more likely I think they pulled it from Sora and Shiro’s mind, selecting the battlefield which Kuuhaku would be the weakest on…

Hmm, I was wondering why they were put into a virtual Tokyo- and I think your speculation is right on the money, Stilts- well we’ll see.

And one more thing, does anyone know if “Clammy” is actually what “Kurami” is supposed to be romanized as, or is it just something that subbers and bloggers came up with for the lulz? Because seriously, Clammy? As in the word for “unpleasantly damp and sticky or slimy to touch”? What an unfortunate name…

    Zen
    1. I don’t think it is supposed to be Clammy. People say they hear that when characters speak her name, but this is just because of the way it sounds in japanese. I hear Kurami, but it is basically a short ‘ku’ sound, a normal ‘ra’ and a long ‘mi’. The LNs use Kurami, so there doesn’t seem to be any sort of kanji or whatever to indicate that it should be romanticized as Clammy.

      Kinni
    2. I’d go for “Kurami”……..and by extension, “Fii”.
Though if you tried pronouncing it fast, or without stressing on the 3 syllables Koo-rah-mi,
I ended up with “Krahmi”….”Clammy” sounds like the closest thing…
      same situation for “Feel”.

If I recall correctly, Stilts said he chose “Clammy” after listening (trying) to the actual mention of her name in the episodes.

      Techim
      1. I’ve learned to disregard “official” romanizations by the Japanese. They’re never right.

A better transliteration based on the katakana on that page would be “kuramii” with a long i on the end.

        CarVac
    3. I use Clammy because enough characters pronounced it in such a way that it sounded like that. That, combined with some sources and the fact that she comes from Elven Garde, which is not based on a Japanese motif, means her name probably is not the Japanese pronunciation, i.e. Kurami.

The Warbeasts have the Japanese motif, so for them + Kuuhaku I use Japanese name pronunciations and naming order. The others appear to be based on civilizations with Western-style naming order, so I render their names appropriate. Which is to say, it’s Stephanie Dola (not Dola Stephanie), Clammy Zell (not Zell Clammy), Feel Nivalen (not Nivalen Feel), etc.

I don’t use Chlammy though because I already changed what I was calling her once, and also it looks fuckin’ ridiculous.

      Stilts
  6. So disappointed I had a cold while watching this, I nearly died from the laughing immediately followed by the induced coughing. Thankfully hard liquor eliminated most of the issues afterwards 😀

Hands down the bath scene was the best, in between Clammy’s shock at realizing Sora saw through her breast enlargement spell and Jibril nonchalantly peeping with Sora’s phone on the wave of nubile nudity gracing the room. Cannot forget Feel’s BDSM “breaking” of Jibril through a little foot fetish subservience. So many typical tropes, yet so tastefully done, haven’t been that winded from laughing so hard in a while.

Interesting info about the Elves too. Their appearance and setting is Tolkien-esque, yet their political structure is very much different. Best real world examples to relate to it would either be the Roman Republic or pre-Civil War United States. Fiction-wise the Draka springs to mind just because of the splitting along race lines. We have the Elves (Citizens) who rule, and everyone else (Serfs) who do the tasks unfit for their masters. Not to mention the Elven affinity for magic is quite similar to the Drakian ability to outproduce, outpace, and outfight all their opponents. Overall it’s not really show-related, but definitely an intriguing tidbit nonetheless.

  7. C-Can I ship everyone with everyone? Sora x Steph, Feel x Clammy, Feel x Jibril, Sora x Clammy, Jibril x Masters, Steph x shampoo bottle, Shiro x Stilt–I mean, erh. Moving on…

    My Interpretions:
Sora x Steph = Comedy duo, eg the baka + Tsukkomi (think Seitokai Yakuindomo)
Feel x Clammy = True friends to end.
Feel x Jibril = Stilts nailed that one I guess. S&M
Sora x Clammy = Close memories shared, I see this as a possible one true pairing 😛
Steph x Shampoo = I’d ship Steph x Cookies instead.
Jibril x Masters = …I’d go for Sora x Jibril since I already have a fanfiction with some feels imagined.

Shiro x Stilt = Ped……Lolicon detected. You already claimed Akatsuki and Minori!!

No mention of Sora x Shiro btw?? I’m guessing the uncomfortable aspects from Oreimo & Mahouka buried it :p.

    Techim
    1. Lol, no, Sora & Shiro just seem to act like actual siblings. Very close ones, but platonically so. I’m not marking them as a possibility unless that sharply changes.

      Stilts
      1. You should be careful, there are quite a number of SoraxShiro shippers out there.

But that aside, I think it’s a good thing to have someone who can provide counter arguments or express some skepticism about boarding certain ship until proven otherwise. It adds a different perspective to the overall interpretation of character relationship, in contrast to hardcore shippers who ships whichever pair they like. Not that hardcore shippers are bad, but it’s good to hear some contradicting opinion at times as long as you respect others’ opinion.

        viss
      2. @SinsI I think it can be argued that Shiro’s infatuation with Sora is pretty insidious at this point :p It’s not unusual for younger siblings to be selfish/clingy with elder siblings they are close too esp when said siblings attention starts to get split to other people or things (something that Shiro didn’t have to deal with until they arrived in Disbord)

As it stands now even if we were to get a timeslip with an older Shiro I think the siscon/brocon angle would still only be played for laughs xD I agree with Stilts their r/ship screams close but platonic

  8. LOL nice. I love how the Virtual Reality program and what the Werebeasts think as the future is the Tokyo Metropolis. Cultural differences indeed.

I like how this series takes into account such differences in priorities and how it can affect which technologies get advanced Heh.

    Netto
    1. My guess as to why the game is set in Tokyo has something to do with the machine they are using in that
it actually reads their minds and using the things that kuhaaku feared the most as the game setting

      lol
  9. My my, it’s easy to clear the road when you have a Flugel on your roof.

I know it was just a minor scene, but the way everyone just politely moved aside when Jibril smiled at them was truly hilarious to me. “Oh no angel of death ma’am, we weren’t trying to get in your masters’ way, we swear!”

  10. a very funny and relaxing episode. I feel No Game No Life does things so naturally, even though there was not too much going on this episode expect introducing us to Clammy and Feel, it still felt natural and pacing felt nice and overall still provide such a strong episode. Either way, Clammy x Feel ship ALL ABOARD!!!! Those two are too sweet together I just can’t-!

It was really interesting to see the relationship of our two new cast joining Immanity and I really am looking forward to next week episode. Let’s see how Sora and Shiro will win this one! And that last part where he asked if Izuna was having fun playing the games was really nice, I have no idea why that part in particular but it just made it that much better.

PS: S Feel and M Jibril, hmmmmm I can get used to that 🙂 I swear every character is so funny in this series and have such good interactions with one another that made this episode really entertaining to watch. Right now I’m really liking Feel and don’t worry, Clammy, we all still love you even if you use padded bra because of your DFC, we all still love you!

And NO Stilt I want Shiro, she’s mine! >:(

    Trap Master
  11. Just when I thought Jibril couldn´t get any scarier we discover she nuked Elven Garde because she bump her head but Feel is not so far behind, more than willing kill off anyone who tries to harm Clammy, even that means erasing her own country. You got to love the characters in this story. XD

  12. if the Werebeasts chose the stage specifically to weaken Sora/Shiro, that means they can read their minds. which mean they wouldn’t have trouble figuring out anything about them. meaning the last King of Imanity’s plan shouldn’t have been able to succeed.

    GoXDS
    1. Some NGNL precedents disprove your thought, Sora already proved they cannot read minds. Secondly, they’ve been playing the same game repeatedly in the past. It wouldn’t be specific to Sora x Shiro. Third, they are arrogant to the point of blindness about beating inamity (not addressing the individuals at all)(, not as careful about it. They don’t fear Sora x Shira team, and they would have no reason to adapt for them.

Which is all very bad on the Werebeast side. Failure to adapt to changing situations means defeat. That is one of the primary lessons of the art of war.

      Drasca
      1. In that case, you may wish to consider your writing form. If english is not your first language, you’d be used to some miscommunication and the necessity of improving it. If it is, then you may want to consider reviewing what you type. Make sure you’re saying what you want, before you hit submit comment.

        Drasca
      2. my final conclusion was probably left too implicit. however, the intermediary statements are obviously false as they were already disproven. thus if you do not automatically assume someone to be completely stupid or bashing the show when there’s no concrete proof, then you can figure out what I meant. but I guess even on RandomC, default is to just assume readers/writers aren’t that clever.

        GoXDS
    2. If it is mind reading, then it’s digital mind reading, done through the VR computer interface that Sora and Shiro’s brains are hooked into for the game and therefore likely to be only good for reading minds within the narrow scope that the design of the system’s hardware and programming allows (i.e. only good for discerning a contestant’s greatest fears)- and not done by means of some broad-spectrum, magical mind reading ability which the show has already established that the Warbeasts don’t really have…

      Zen
      1. while I grant that limited scope is still possible, there’s little reason why they’re unable to take it a step further and scan for w/e. imo, just wouldn’t be likely.

        GoXDS
      2. Or it could simply be some kind of audience bait and switch cliffhanger. I.e. something which makes the audience think that the Warbeasts are reading Kuuhaku’s minds when really it’s just some sort of bizarre coincidence where the game world just happens to look like Tokyo, for whatever reason- would fit right in with the type of crack-pot, acid trip logic that this show is inclined to…

        Zen
  13. i did not read the light novels but i will put my GUESS under spoilers anyway on case i’m right.

    Show Spoiler ▼

at least that is my theory, as for tokyo being their weakness, that would mean that someone(most likely the pristess) can actually read minds and i don’t like that possibility for some reason, could be a coincidence but that is also unlikely as that would mean that they summoned someone from Kuuhaku’s world, or tokyo is such a strong presece in the universe that every other multiverse has it(at this point i would direct you to the “tokyo is the center of the universe” trope but this is my first post here so i don’t know how to do it, unless i just posted the url here… nah!)

tough i worry about them i’m sure they will pull through, what worries me the most is this not getting a second season D:(and Sakurasou…and kokoro connect… and a third for kyoukaisen… and a first for the lucifer and the biscuit hammer…and… well that list sure is getting big, in direct relation to my dismay)

i hope the game will be as grand as the last ones, to close the season with the weakest one would be really disapointing

    Ragazo
  14. Damn that is bad ass! I did not see that they would created a game about OUR world. BUt it make sense, we make games about animal people and fantasy magic. NAtURALLY the other world would make it about us.

Damn, and DAT shower scene! I wonder why if she can change Sora to a girl she can’t just change his ass back. An since Jibril is stronger in magic then Fi, then shouldn’t she able to do it also?

    Duzz
  15. Stilts, there’s competition for Shiro. Just you, me, and everyone else on this site and most of the viewers male and female too. Watch out! Just have to beat kuuhaku in a game first…

Of course some of them may just cosplay shiro… or maybe even jibril… Ok, nosebleed time.

  16. I love how they tried so hard to keep Jibril past animation as light as possible!
According to the Novel after Jibril bump into the barrier and fell on the ground , she is so angry that she charged up some cataclysmic level magic , all elvengrade soldiers and citizens went into defensive barrier stance i think it’s about 1million elf( not sure) holding up barrier to protect the capital , but to no avail , jibril gave 0 f*ck and annihilated the entire capital massacred everyone in it. But as a prize she can’t use any magic for 3 years(not sure). I just want to say that Jibril is awesome , feel is also awesome she forgave quite easily there! “Let it go” song is playing in the background

    PeTdo
  17. I too felt this episode was weaker of the pack too, but like you easily forgiven since the rest were so good, and the show itself was still good. So there’s only 9 home runs out of 10 so far … it is hard to complain. So we only got to 2nd base this time… well maybe third in the case of Steph and the shampoo– next episode is setup to be epic.

Clammy is so cute. A fine addition to Sora’s harem, though not if Feel has something to say about it.

Once a NEET, always a NEET, as long as it’s outdoors, not even geek haven Akihabara could keep Kuuhaku sane. lol

  19. Interesting to note is how Sora realized that Izuna-tan has not enjoyed the games for a long time. A natural reaction given that she must always play for the sake of her country and can’t afford to lose. That’s an opening for a Pokémon/Yu-Gi-Oh like match in which the MCs show the opponent how games must be fun, before giving it a beating.

  20. random thoughts: jibril seems to destroy things based on the injuries she sustain… she wipes a city for getting a bump in a head… so i wonder, what kind of injury would take her to wipe out an entire race? 😀

    The Last Idiot
  21. Some minor things/details that needs mention:

    1. Jibril lost so much magic after that strike that she was unable to use magic for 5 years. Using her full power wasn’t worth it against the elves as their heads were just rarity 2. To top off her past actions, Jibril said that she managed to loot some of the elves’ books after that attack which she said was compensation for her being unable to use magic.
Fil mentioned that it took the elves 800 years to recover from that crisis.

    2. Fil is 52 years old. Hence Sora’s comment that she looks more like a mother than a best friend.

      1. Well if you think of crossovers with other anime;
a pissed off Jibril against a pissed off Accelerator sounds like a deadly match.
In the sense that its hard to damage one, and hard to kill the other..

        Techim
  22. I would guess that next episode Sora and Shiro snap out of it when they realize the people in the Tokyo area are just NPCs, with it being just a game and not real people they perhaps would lose some of that fear of crowds etc.

I think they maybe were freaking out because they thought they had somehow been transported back to the real world, I dunno.

    Lyfe
    1. True, they let the cat out of the bag in the previous episodes saying it is a video game. If those five truly are the only players, then the others in Tokyo cannot be.

That’s exactly why they are freaking out– but evidence so far about summoning magic suggests only Tet has the magic to sustain that sort of thing. Episode with Jibril’s initial meeting / battle / capture verified they’re not from this world, and summoning from other worlds would take too much magic to sustain. We should reasonably assume summoning into other worlds would be just as impossible for normal magic users.

    1. Clammy: Flatchested Crying Purple hair slave human girl that played Sora in chess and almost won the tournament for inmanity’s king

      1. Two different pronunciations (and spellings) of the same name. Kurami is the Japanese phonetic pronunciation of her name, Clammy, and Fil is the same for Feel. Remember, they come from Elven Garde, which is based on some kind of pseudo-ancient Greek/forest Elven civilization, not Japan (that’s the Warbeasts). They don’t have Japanese names, so I don’t treat them as such.

        Stilts
  24. Oh well it was nice to get some backstory on both Kurami and Fi.
I was surprised it took only one major humiliation to subdue hostility towards the Jibril. Come on, she did murder God knows how many thousands Elves! (But that was nice reminder of her true nature as Weapon of M.D. – that was rather needed after her quirks have overshadowed her history)
And, off we go to a game against Werebeasts – it started all standard fare, VR chambers, “digitalization” visual effects…
Until the nature of the game itself was revealed, a VR of downtown Tokyo. The one and only place the twins could not withstand!
I was speechless at their immediate surrender (Imanity is done for, sorry!), but I guess there is something up their sleeves yet. In particular, I’m interested about what secret instructions were given to Steph, who still is working under the orders from the series of hopelss games she lost against BLANK few eps ago!
