Is Reality Someone Else’s Fiction?

I think it fits this story the best that the “Tokyo” the game takes place in is actually a sci-fi level they made up. Fun Fact: Did you know we’re all characters in a cheap genre fiction novel? The idea that our reality is somebody else’s fantasy is wildly fascinating to me, even if, yes, the way they got all the details so close is a tad suspect. It gave us freaking out Sora and burnt out, ultra-shiro Shiro though, so NO ARGUMENTS IT IS GRAND!!

Living or Dead Series Side Story. Love or Loved 2: Hit Her With Your Bullet of Love!

The references abound once again! The chief one being Gal*Gun, the FPS which this episode’s game is flagrantly based on. Let’s put aside the silly game OP. Let’s ignore the hilariously badass flashbacks of ojii-san. Let’s talk about how Sora and Shiro methodically tested out how the game worked in order to exploit it–by shooting each other in the face!

The revelation that shooting an ally would temporarily make them your love slave was hilarious! Excellent execution abounds in how, as soon as this was revealed, Shiro instantly shot Sora and made him her love slave before we could even think of this happening, and then Jibril did the same. Love triangle! NTR! Jibril is not only an M but an S too! (She’s also incapable of love, which is an interesting thing to keep in mind. She simply does not possess that emotion.)

Steph also came in handy by letting them test out how shots bounce. Steph loves herself! Selfcest! No, wait–Stephcest! THREE CHEERS FOR STEPHCEST! Oh, and for getting her clothing shot off, though Sora tested that with before that. An All Ages game, damn!

Games Are Fun, No Matter The Stakes

Do you remember how Kuuhaku said they always win games before they even start? I think that’s what they were doing when Sora asked Izuna-tan when was the last time she had enjoyed a game was. Because while Izuna-tan was in super serious mode, Sora and crew were goofing around, and the cracks started to show early. Whether this was a plan to destabilize Izuna-tan or a way to bring her to their side after they’ve won, I do not know, but I think it’s more the latter. The game against Izuna-tan is important, but the game for Izuna-tan is equally so, because they need the Warbeasts if they’re ever going to challenge Tet. That’s the meta reason why Sora was having so much fun shooting panties off nekomimi girls, to get this message across to Izuna-tan. The rest was for him.

But more to the point, are Sora and Shiro right? Can we, and should we, enjoy the game no matter the stakes? Yes! All of life is a game, and it’s not one we’re going to make it out of alive. Why take it seriously all the way through? Sure, take it seriously to a point, but have fun too. This comes as much from Sora and Shiro’s neigh-overwhelming skill – they can “afford” to goof around, even in a game with these stakes – as from anything else, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true. Have some fun, Izuna-tan. Life is too short to be angry all the time.

Shiro Star

Shiro takes center stage again! Sora has been overshadowing her a fair amount of the series, but that’s because of the nature of the games as much as anything else. Sora is the liar and the strategist, the trickster and the fool, and in the messy “real world” he most often gets to employ his advantages. Shiro, though, has the minutiae down to a science. She’s the computational master, able to digest every detail and arrive at the best tactics so quickly it borders on precognition. How she fought reminded me of Discworld’s Cohen the Barbarian – it’s not that she’s especially strong or fast, she just stands in the exact spot where the blows won’t strike her and uses the most efficient way possible to take down her enemies. If this were a fair game, it would have been over as soon as she found Izuna.

And that’s why Shiro frequently gets overshadowed by Sora. It’s not because she’s not as good, but because the way she’s good isn’t dramatic. When Shiro wins, she wins with overwhelming skill, making exactly the right moves and never making a misstep. Where’s the drama in that? Sora, though, is a master of the come-from-behind victory. His victories are just as overwhelming in the end – and his base abilities are damn good too, as we saw when he was sniping (with a pistol, no less) – but they’re far more dramatic, more “How the hell are they going to come back from this?” That makes for better storytelling, so I suspect Sora will continue to play a larger role. I like that the story is giving Shiro a larger part though, because Sora vs Shiro is a false choice – it’s all about Kuuhaku together.

Unbeatable Cheaters

As I said, if this were a fair game it would have already been over, but Izuna has three advantages: 1) She can block attacks with her clothing, 2) there’s some cheat code enabled that gives her precognition, and 3) her grandpa is talking to her. Oh, and her ridiculous reflexes. Oh, and her amazing senses, and how she can use them to make the bouncing shots do crazy things. I don’t know how #3 is working, and I can’t think of a technological reason that wouldn’t have been sniffed out, so I’m suspecting it was him moving his lips and Izuna picking up the vibrations or something like that.

More interesting to me is #2, because like the fiction that the Warbeasts can “read minds”, it’s a giant con on a race-wide scale. They’ve made people think they can read minds, have a sixth sense, and all of this other stuff in order to cover for their cheating. Without being able to rule out this fictional “sixth sense”, they can claim it as an explanation for their cheats. Their national discipline is amazing, and I can’t help but have respect for a con on this large of a scale. The liar marketer within me is impressed.

All According To Plan

Foreshadowing is king, and they brought back everything we learned early on. The bouncing shots. Blocking shots with clothing. Being able to shoot clothing off. The love-love mode “love slaves” go into for a time. Shiro not running. Kuuhaku knowing each other’s minds better than anyone else, so they can arrive at the same plan separately without speaking a word (which would risk their plan being overheard and leaked.) Everything came back in time to corner Izuna-tan on the fall off the building.

I’m proud to say that I called how Shiro wasn’t turned when she was walking after Sora, and more importantly, missing. It’s possible that a mind controlled Shiro wouldn’t have access to her full computational abilities, but I doubt it. No, Shiro isn’t the type to take a shot (and potentially doom her team in the process) unless she had a plan up her sleeves.

If your enemy is cheating like Izuna-tan was, the way to victory is all about tricking them into a situation where they can’t dodge, and in coming up with this plan Shiro is plotting like Sora. Misdirection, subterfuge, shooting off pantsu…she’s growing up! Even Jibril being turned so that Shiro can shoot and spin the shot around was all according to plan. Once again, they nearly won–but there’s one problem.

Looking Ahead – Blood Destruction

One ability of the Warbeasts wasn’t a lie, and that was Blood Destruction. Izuna definitely has it, and she’s having fun now, which means she’s dangerous. But perhaps predictable? Now that she’s having fun she might throw caution to the wind and play for the love of the game, which could give Kuuhaku some serious trouble. But I still think they have something up their sleeve, and Steph might just be the key to their victory. You never know…until next week. One more episode, nooooo!

tl;dr: @StiltsOutLoud – A love-love FPS turns intense when Kuuhaku & co goes toe-to-toe w/ an unstoppable cheater & force her to pull out all the stops #nogenora 11

Random thoughts:

  • I still sort of want to see Shiro actually become Izuna-tan’s love slave. Not that she hasn’t shown that she’s perfectly willing to take on the role voluntarily.
  • Motorboating loli fantasy!
  • I liked how ojii-san realized that Sora and Shiro know this game even better than they do. He’s a perceptive old bastard, and he better hope they lose. Too bad they won’t.
  • This is Jibril in full Angel of Death mode. Well, minus the severed heads. So pretty close.

  1. This serious right here is so beastly and Jibril NTR-ing Sora. Epic Win. Poor Seph, girl is getting played like nothing else but still lover her.

    People, your Student Council president.

Ahem, that FPS battle was epic and FINALLy humanity itself is like “WHOA, our kings are badasses!”

I will say though why Clammy wrote off the entire Human Race when Sora was trying to get a peak of the girl panties. It seem to me the audience was confused not excited about it.

Also I don’t know if anyone caught it but when Seph fell in love with herself she was screaming “yes! Yes! YES! YES!!!!” towards the end of her own fantasy world…

    Dat Girl so cray cray!

    DAMN awesome series.

  2. Legend of the Galactic Heroes reference FTMFW! All of my love!!!!!!!

I gotta admit the last couple of episodes felt relatively flat to me, but this is NGNL at its finest once again. Using the VR FPS dependent on athletic ability essentially depowers blank against Izuna, which really contributed to the tension. And Shiro’s way of tricking her into thinking she was shot was darn hilarious! Plus Jibril continues to shine with them yandere vibes, but I get a feeling Steph’s going to play some part in dealing with the super-beastloli… All in all a great episode!

      1. Just remember, (almost) everything Kuuhaku does is for a reason. When you suspect your enemies can listen in on what you say, why reveal what your trump card is? Better to let Steph operate on her own, if she’s truly going to be the X factor that brings them victory.

        Stilts
      2. Personally, I have no idea, but I can read the writing on the wall, and if I could figure out how to make use of Steph, that’s what I would do as well. Nobody expects the Steph.

        Stilts
      3. Misdirection ahoy, right up Sora’s alley.

No one in game world expects Steph, Ok, not even Kuuhaku sometimes! Steph… competent in politics, well connected and smart? How… she failed everywhere else in games. However, She was used in a pivotal fashion against Jibril. Again misdirection, as those extra monsters / summonings would’ve been a distraction Sora x Shiro would’ve had difficulty managing alone.

Oh I love how they manage to keep all the characters useful and relevant while in line with their character traits.

Where is Steph? This show isn’t the type to leave unnecessary characters or wasted space. Her marked absence is definitely a flag for surprise victory.

        Drasca
      4. Remember back in episode 10, Sora made a final demand to Steph and he made sure Jibril used magic to prevent the werebeasts from overhearing. So, Steph will probably become useful under influence of the command.

  3. We only get to see Steph in her pantsu for like five seconds? We got more fanservice from a random NPC! She better not magically gain clothes next episode. I just hate it when that happens.

  4. Oho. They made up for the lack of references in Ep10 by putting quite a number in Ep11.

The death flag statement by Sora makes sense after you watch that FSN scene.

I think its the DejaVu movie since I don’t recall Kurisu ever making that pose in the series.

  5. I liked how the Warbeast embassy was in the Art Deco style of the Empire state building. 1930’s eh? So the year 2010’s Tokyo would be way into the future for them hence the Gal*ge VR parody’s setting. Cultural differences (aka lack of Military necessities) leading to different technological progress.

Anyways, fine episode. So many parodies that its a wonder they’re not breaking copyright. Gal*gun x Left 4 Dead lol.

Also loved the Catherine Game over BGM use. Took a while to realize it. xD

  6. Shiro, in this episode, is doing a few differential calculus equations, in order to calculate the road to victory. As a person who took Calculus as a class I have to ask: Just how does writing partial derivatives lead to Shiro coming up with a strategy of Shiro pretending to join the enemy side? XD I’d appreciate it, if anyone would answer my question. That’s my only gripe I have with this episode. Also, I feel that this game would be a little more interesting if the fox girls were replaced with Pigeons.

    1. Kinematics by the looks of things considering the focus on angle and velocity of rebounds. When dealing with a 3D frame of reference (especially if the acceleration of the object is not constant or if there is more than one object) often the only way to solve for target value is via calculus. I’d hazard a guess that it doesn’t have to do with Shiro joining the enemy, but the situation at the end of the episode where they are falling with the multiple shots flying around.

Otherwise chalk it up to background material there only to make Shiro look smart, it’s the common way to indicate high level intelligence in most shows 😛

  7. The #2 and #3 of the “Unbeatable Cheaters” part is the same. What gives Izuna this “sixth sense” deal in the first encounter is Ino talking to her. Ino actually pointed out Sora’s location from afar and that a shot was coming at her. You can see that the visual cue when Izuna noticed Sora’s shot and Ino at this part is the same.
As for how Ino does it, it’s suppose to be a high frequency sound that only Warbeasts can hear. That and knowing the whole state of the battlefield through the monitors.

    belatkuro
      1. IIRC, he didn’t bother covering up his mouth moving. Since the players in-game cannot see him, and normally there is no audience (not that anyone is watching him carefully as opposed to the game), they can’t prove he’s cheating visually.

Sora x Shiro are probably aware, but are not giving away tells that they know (until the game is over), but working around the fact that Grandpa is communicating.

Meta spy vs spy games going on! Never let the enemy know you are aware.

This really reminds me of that Matrix movie scene in a way (http://youtu.be/3TVN1xrHcUU?t=28s)
Since the NGNL LNs debuted much much later than the Matrix movie, plausible reference?

Oh and as for the outcome of the Izuna vs Jibril shooting match,
    https://randomc.net/image/No%20Game%20No%20Life/No%20Game%20No%20Life%20-%2011%20-%20Large%2037.jpg
It was a subtle hint, but Jibril lost.
Clue: During the freefall when Shiro shot away Izuna’s gun, Izuna wasn’t worried since she had Jibril deliver a backup gunshot towards Shiro and Sora..until their bullet richocheted back at her

    Techim
    1. You’re not the only one, the free fall scene reminded me a lot of the scene from the Matrix: Reloaded where Trinity backed out of the window and engaged in the free fall firefight with one of the Agent Smiths until nailed by a bullet. Except here of course instead of a chest shot we have a panty shot 😛

  9. 2nd best episode for me after the chess match! And again, another cliffhanger!

That subtle F/SN Shout Out (trope!) though, complete with ‘death flag’…I almost missed it.

And boy, that Zone-like transition to Blood Destruction of Izuna was awesome to see.

The big question now is, will there ever be a second season?

    R_Jaeger
    1. I didn’t catch the reference because i watched fsn in english (and not in several years)but i still busted a gut at the “death flag”
i think we will. i mean this anime is just too good /not/ to get another season. its the kind of thing otakus eat up! wacky comedy, references, over the top, dramatic, and well animated

Technically so far, claiming to be incapable of love. Perhaps she never had a first love yet?

  12. I must say… NGNL alongside with Chaika are turning out way better than I initially thought to be. I won’t be surprised if this is in the running for Anime of the Season.

NGNL’s episode 11 is sure full of parodies and troupes. Got to love Jibril’s NTR scene. Building on Techim’s reply, seems like Archer’s reincarnated as Jibril in this holy grail war.

And just like how Madoka somewhat redefines what being magic girl is, seems like Sora has redefined the term “panty shot”

the most over-the-top, ridiculous parody of j-gaming ever!
loved when instantly after introducing friendly fire concept they started shooting each other!
and Sora going for fun/achievment panty/bra destroying shots…

    -Shiro Star
I think everyone experienced in his gaming life a moment facing someone like Shiro – you just can’t seem to hit them, and their bullets seem guided to your body by magic.
It all boils down to 2 factors, really, understanding the game mechanics, and predicting target behavior – that’s also was why the one thing Shiro did not expect from Sora was full-on straight charge without ANY dodge (YOLO!)

    ewok40k
    1. You’re wrong about one thing – Shiro did expect Sora to do that. (Probably.) After all, she deliberately missed him because he didn’t dodge and that put them in a position to get the better of Izuna-tan. They had to say all of that though because they knew ojii-san was listening in and passing information along to Izuna-tan.

      Stilts

  14. OK, [ ] had a gun trained on Izuna and fired, she dodged and Jibril fired at [ ]. However, the shot deflected back from Jibril’s round and was going to hit Izuna when she transformed. So, did the shot transform her, or did she do it before she got hit?

    SmithCB
      1. You sure she dodged the bullet? In the ep, it seemed more she used some cheat-a-like called “Blood Destruction” and erased the bullet, o the bullet hit her eye, but instead of going down, she has something like life (x4) since it’s 4 vs 1 and the Werebeast purpousely didn’t tell that?

  15. was a little disappointed when they revealed what the game was about, but it turned out be be pretty great. I should know better than to doubt NGNL!

moral of the story: If you can’t beat them, fool them!

    a box like hippo
  16. 2) there’s some cheat code enabled that gives her precognition, and 3) her grandpa is talking to her

With the old man watching the game from the outside 3) would be the source of 2).

    Longhaul
  17. I might also add the movie Equilibrium as part of the parody, as that’s some amazing Gun Kata by Shiro, calculating all the possible trajectories to predict where to best avoid them.

    echykr
    1. I disagree on this point, because IIRC, in Equilibrium, the Gun-Kata was really just a fancy way of saying “hand-to-hand combat with a heavy metal object” in your hands. There was no real prediction of trajectory or fancy ricochet shots.

      Blue
      1. I did not say Shiro would be a carbon copy of Christian Bale’s character in that movie, just the part where she calculates the trajectories and makes the appropriate shots that intercepts incoming shots.

        echykr
      2. See, that’s the thing. I don’t recall Christen Bale’s character doing any “calculation of trajectories.” IIRC, there weren’t any intercepted shots or the like. The shooting people part of Equilibrium was fairly vanilla, it was the hand-to-hand combat part, the “gun-kata” which claimed to defend against the most probable trajectories, which was different. And even then, it wasn’t about calculation. Just rote movements that blocked or avoided the most likely areas.

        Blue
      3. Also, if it’s not a carbon copy, I think it becomes very difficult to argue that it’s parodying Equilibrium. Being able to intercept other people’s shots with your own is almost a staple fantasy of fictional gun fights.

It’s like when people point to similar looking characters from different anime, and act as if that has any significance.

        Blue
  18. 2) They can’t read minds, that’s for sure, but remember they have heightened senses compared to other races. Just like how Sora figured it wasn’t mind reading but they can sense the breathing and heart rate of the other person thus turning them into “living lie detectors” and can see things kilometers away too.
    3) can be easily explained since they’re “beast”, so infrasounds and ultrasounds.

    Kamui04
  19. What an episode, the action was great! Also, Shiro too strong, please (don’t) nerf!
But really, if someone had told me at the start of the season that NGNL would have epic gunfights, I would have laughed them off, but this episode just pulled out one of the best action episodes of the season.

That “Hii~” by Jibril when Izuna jumped out was really scary, I honestly though the game would end there. And then Jibril couldn’t fly.

    Anonymosity
  20. I realized something. While Imanity cannot use magic, the Ten Pledges is stronger than magic! If whatever Sora did to Steph worked, then goddamn, that’s some powerful shit right there!

    inanis
  22. Over the last few episodes or so didn’t they show a silhouette of an adult female Warbeast talking to Izuna from behind some sort of translucent curtain several times; someone who Izuna seemed to be afraid of? Does anyone know if that’s her mom or something?

    Zen
    1. She was mentioned before, although Sora appeared to brush the information off with blathering about his obsession over animal girls. That’s Miko (the Crunchyroll subs actually translate it as Shrine Priestess, since it’s a title rather than a name), the Warbeast’s leader. She’s the one who united the Warbeasts into a single country rather than divided factions.

      Wanderer
      1. Thanks! 🙂

So I’m assuming that all we have thus far is information about her role in the Warbeast society, and no information on whether she’s somehow also a blood relative of Izuna?

        Zen
  23. Magic doesn’t work in this game, huh? So their physical abilities are fantastic and are physical but they are physical so that is fine. But this blood destruction with the shining symbols? That’s gotta be inherent magic, but still magic, right? Rulebreaking I would think. Guess we’ll see next week.

    igniteous
    1. Not magic. An inherent physical ability. The Warbeasts don’t have magic, and magic is not possible within the game world.

That’s a thing people seem to not be getting. There’s no rule against magic being used in the game, it simply isn’t possible.

      Wanderer
    2. Think of it like this: the game is only mapping their physical inputs. If they try to make an input that isn’t physical (i.e. it’s magical), the game simply doesn’t recognize it, so it doesn’t happen. It only maps the physical ones.

      So basically, what Wanderer said.

      Stilts
  24. This episode is SO EPIC! I haven’t had such excitement for long time! Damn, I ROFL so hard during the scenes like where Ino was explaining about shooting allies where Shiro shot Sora (priceless reactions there) and then Jibril shooting Shiro (another priceless reactions) and the aftermath. Then the agony of trying to see some M-18 footage by shooting panties – w/ the Imanity’s cooperation too! Then the epic fail of Jibril forgetting that she can’t fly during the game after an epic entrance! UGH….seven more days until the next episode…feels so long!

    Bakanekokun
  25. I probably just don’t get the reference (or didn’t read the review that explained it) but what does M and S mean when it’s said “Jibril is not only an M but an S too!”?

    Shurai
    1. I will try to be very PC and PG-rated, S= Sadism where an individual get excited by inflicting pain on your partner while M=Masochism is where an individual likes receiving pain of that relationship. Both terms usually implies sexual innuendos.

      Bakanekokun
  26. Didn’t read the comments, but this was the best episode up now in my opinion.

And… who wants to bet about poor STEPH winning the game or whatnot? I get this feeling she’s there for a reason other than being bullied only …

  27. Actually Izuna’s clothing shield is not a cheat but a game mechanic. Examples are Shiro’s panties being shot by Sora as a bluff and Shiro’s change of clothes after Izuna’s attack in the passageway. (I guess Shiro did use her clothes as shield then)

  28. This is the best ‘new show’ this season by a long shot for me. At the beginning it started out strong but now it is heading towards a truly EPIC finish. I couldn’t be more pleased. I am kinda enjoying Black Bullet & Captain Earth but this show just blew them away by leaps and bounds.

  29. I´ve been wandering this since Jibril said she´s incapable of love, the Flugel were created as god slaying living weapons to destroy the Old Deus so the fact that the god Artosh did not include love in their design is not that suprising, it intrigues me if she cannot feel love at all or she could to love later on; considering the flgel change from a savage warrior race to a intelectual but crazy society I belive is possible our little angel insane could lkearn what love is in the future. (don´t you a a flashback of Chaos from Sora no Otoshimono when jibril said she cannot feel love? Because i surely did! XD).

    haseo0408
  30. I think it’s not because she can’t experience love rather she haven’t experienced one yet.
why do I think so? It’s because of this game they are playing, If she can’t love then she could easily
win the game since the gun wouldn’t effect her at all

  31. Having marathoned 1-11 I recognise the series is good, but it is extremely jarring by any scale of relatability. Shiro as a character is more than a borderline Mary Sue, even if the author is male, she is everything and more than would not be realistic in an 11 yo. Humour only partially covers how extreme the proposition is that Shiro speaks 18 languages (2 a year effectively, yeah right when you game that much), knows advanced physics and mathematics, also improbably when learning languages and gaming and is good at stupidly high numbers of game genres. Even stopping to consider an 11yo girl is capable of that makes the Shiro character basically a moe shell for someone to mirror Sora when her character is incredibly reality breaking by her existence.

Sora is only marginally less difficulty to believe due to his age, but anime didn’t adequately explain their situation at start.

The anime of the year cries are really really poor for an anime that has to move quick and keep trying to outdo itself to prevent the audience disbelief at so many things compared to many anime worlds from fracturing under the assumptions of the supposedly relatable MCs.

  32. Man as much as I love this show, I feel that all the fanservice in this show just feels gratuitous. Call me a prude but I feel this show is to good to drag it down itself down with fanservice and tired Otaku jokes that stopped being funny the third time I heard them (and now I’ve heard them HUNDREDS OF TIMES, ugh…).

Did they really have to parody Gal*Gun? Was a simple badass FPS not enough? They’ve got this wishywashy setup where it wants to be taken as this story of a badass duo and their adventures but they have this compulsion to reduce themselves to these annoying tropes.

  33. For me, this had to be the best episode in terms of the adrenaline-rush, enjoyment, and (epic) Jibril screentime. I wanted more SoraxJibril interaction and I’m so glad this episode delivered it.
