「コレマデ×ト×コレカラ」 (Koremade x and x Korekara)
“Till Now x and x From Now”

In many ways, I think this is probably the toughest post I’ve ever had to write.

The other day, at Sanbunzaka Studio, the place of all the beginnings, we conducted the recording for episode 148 of Hunter x Hunter, which will serve as the turning point for the anime for now. I will not say “final episode” myself. I will be stubborn and only call it “episode 148.” I say this, because in terms of episode numbers, in a certain meaning, this will be the final episode, but I feel that it also feels like the start of a new beginning. If you ask me, episode 147 is the final episode, and 148 is sort of an epilogue. The original manga is still continuing, and the adventures haven’t ended yet. An unknown world still awaits. Actually, it’s like what has happened up until now in the story was nothing more than a prologue, and it gets me even more expectant for what’s to come. Though I say that, when I think that “I’ve been going to the same place every week at the same time for three years, but next week, this won’t happen…,” I get very sad…

I know I shouldn’t talk too much, but I will condense my feelings right here. To everything up until now, and to everyone, I say, “Thank you.”

– Han Megumi

How in the world does one go about starting a post like this? I’ve written so much about Hunter X Hunter over the last three years – without question more than I’ve written about any subject in my life. And without question those posts have been read by more people, both cumulatively and in an average week, than any other posts I’ve written. There can’t be much that’s left unsaid. There can’t be a shred of doubt about my feelings. If I were smart I would just say a heartfelt “thank you” and stop right there. But this series means too much to me to let it go so easily.

The “Memories x and Milestones” posts I’ve written over the last ten days already serve as a series review of sorts, so there isn’t a whole lot of point in covering that ground here. And frankly, this final episode serves as a series review in its own right – eloquently encapsulating everything that was so wonderful about H x H far better than I would have thought possible in 22 minutes. I was a little bit empty after last week’s episode, to be honest – Gon and Killua’s parting was not the emotional catharsis I’d hoped it might be. But this finale gave the series the kind of closure it needed, even subtly casting Gon and Killua’s status in a different light.

This precious experience will motivate me for my future career. HUNTER×HUNTER is my treasure for now and ever.

– Abiru Takihiko

It’s quite interesting that Togashi-sensei wrote this chapter when he did, because it does indeed feel like both an end and a beginning. With a story like Hunter X Hunter that’s how it should be, because there should always be a world of endless possibility waiting for us at edge of the the horizon. And Togashi has left us a truly astonishing number of dangling plot threads, enough to make Han-san’s quote about the first 339 chapters and 148 episodes being a prologue seem very realistic. How much if any of that possibility Togashi will explore is anyone’s guess, as his health is obviously a huge concern. And how much of what he does explore will find its way to anime one day is just as difficult to say, given everything that would have to fall into place for there to be further production on H x H. But there can be no doubt that the mythology of Hunter X Hunter is limited only by Togashi’s imagination, and as we’ve seen, his imagination is virtually limitless.

That said, there’s absolutely no doubt that Togashi intended the events of this episode (Madhouse added a bit here and there, especially for Gon’s journey to the World Tree, but most was manga canon) as a kind of epilogue for the story that ran for the first 147. There is indeed closure here – Gon catches up to Ging and has the talk he’s been dreaming of at last. We touch base with many old faces, tie up some loose ends while leaving many more dangling. And the philosophy behind the story is laid out quite poetically by Ging (he still stinks as a father, but he’s undeniably got a way with words), in a holistic way that it never was before. The feeling at the end of the episode was perfect – the only thing better would have been a message telling us the series was going to continue next week after all.

Thank you for so much happiness! My feelings are more than gratitude. It is the treasure of my life.

– Ise Mariya

Let me just free-associate about the episode itself, because my emotions have my thoughts so scattered that it would be days before I’d be able to do anything else. The background music during Gon’s journey to the tree was a new orchestral mix of “Hyori Ittai”, which I absolutely loved – this series just keeps delivering the mail when it comes to the soundtrack. There was a cameo by Togashi-sensei (at the registration booth to climb the World Tree), and I generally loved this whole sequence because it recalled the heady, buoyant nature of the first couple of episodes – Gon’s enthusiasm and energy spurring him forward like the force of nature it is, the smile never leaving his face. That’s how I want to remember Gon.

I have a lot of resistance to Ging, generally speaking, because on a very basic level the notion that anything could be important enough to walk away from a beautiful son who loves you and leave his upbringing entirely up to someone else is foreign to me. But this is a manga, not real life, and one has to get past that I guess. Ging has a very important role here in addition to being Gon’s goal – he represents the pure Hunter ideal better than anyone else in the cast. To be free (maybe don’t knock a girl up if you want freedom, but never mind). To always be searching for something – to always hunt. To be driven not by greed but by the simple desire to know, to experience, to be – and even to do some service to society along the way. And as Mito said, Gon certainly inherited Ging’s essential nature in this respect.

More than that, though, it was in the quest for Ging that Gon learned the first big lesson that Ging taught him on top of the World Tree (I love those “Piyo!” chicks, especially when they shut up on-command) – what’s important is not the destination, but the journey. While the boy Ging had a worthwhile goal – to set up a nonprofit for stewardship if priceless archaeological relics he’s never otherwise get to see – the best thing about the experience was the friends he made on the way. And for Gon, frankly, the best thing about his quest for Ging was meeting Killua, Kurpaika and Leorio – and all the others whose lives he touched, and who touched his. And I think Ging, for all his faults, would have no problem accepting that.

The entire father-son talk was more emotionally satisfying than I expected, if I’m honest. And it acted as a tantalizing glimpse of the wonders Togashi still has in mind for Hunter X Hunter, should we all be so fortunate as to see them brought to life. This is the reason for Ging’s continued journey – there’s a new world outside the one we’ve seen, one which dwarfs it in every way – and it was this world from whence the Chimera Ants came. There are “at least” four requirements to visit this world – Authorization, Means, Qualification and Contract. And Ging, who’s been called “the best Hunter in the world”, hasn’t achieved a single one of them yet.

In the end, though, that doesn’t matter – because he’s enjoying the journey so much. I could have lived without the “if our paths should cross again” he offered Gon, but the advice which followed it was Ging’s finest moment as a father – “Enjoy the little detours. To the fullest.” So many boys’ lives would be richer and happier if their fathers had communicated this utterly simple bit of wisdom – it’s the essence of the adventurous soul, the heart of what separates a traveler from a tourist. Togashi clearly understands this deep in his soul, and the beauty of this notion permeates Hunter X Hunter through and through. It was present at the beginning of the series, and many travails along the way notwithstanding, it was present at the end. And that’s exactly as it should be.

As the episode concludes, we take a trip ourselves as the full version of “Departure” plays – not into the past, but into the present. Morel and Knov (somewhat recovered, happily) settle their bets as to who would go to fight the Chimera Ants, and drink a toast of vintage champagne to Netero’s memory. Knuckle, Palm, Meleoron and Ikalgo are together happily at the recuperating Shoot’s bedside. The picture which closes the OP sits on Leorio’s bookshelf – that sweet, sentimental guy that he is. He’s still trying to reach Kurapika, who still isn’t answering – but he’s clearly made progress in his goal to recover the eyes of his fellow Kurta. Canary and Amane visit Gotoh’s grave, and he shockingly appears – except it’s really a Kiriko, presumably there to hide the painful truth from Killua. Beneath the palace in East Gorteau, Marshal and Spy rest for eternity, hands clasped. Killua and Alluka greet the new morning, side by side. And Gon takes the wonder of Spinner Clow’s Small-billed Swans at Kaito’s side, eyes bright and smiling, the possibilities as endless as his limitless imagination. Indeed, the only thing missing is Hisoka, who’s such an important part of Gon’s journey that it feels as if we should have seen him one last time.

This sequence was the hardest part of the episode for me to get through, to be honest – indeed I’m finding myself back in that place now, just writing about it. But that’s also as it should be – after everything we’ve been through with Gon and the people he’s met, the ending should be both happy and sad, because neither would do justice to the journey without the presence of the other. This is both an end and a beginning, because the journey always continues as long as we have life and the will to make the most of it.

And there it ends – 148 episodes, three years, countless emotions. I’ve said all there is to say about why I feel Hunter X Hunter will go down as the greatest shounen adaptation of all-time, and one of anime’s greatest series. It’s a perfect storm, a marriage of a truly brilliant writer with an anime staff and cast that was committed from day one to making something truly great. And they’ve succeeded, gloriously so. The words of those who worked on the series are full of the love they feel for it, and the impact it’s had on their lives – and it’s certainly the same in its small way for we who loved it as viewers. When people are truly passionate about their work it shows through in a way that can’t be faked, and that passion made Hunter X Hunter into something that’s special in every way.

I feel so many emotions now when thinking of Hunter X Hunter – sadness, affection, curiosity about the future – but most of all I feel gratitude to those people for pouring so much of themselves into making something truly lasting and important. That work is its own reward, the journey that truly matters – but their legacy is the series that will stand as one of anime’s most remarkable achievements and the joy that it brought to so many viewers all over the world. Surely, there can be no truer definition of art than that.

You should enjoy the little detours. To the fullest. Because that’s where you’ll find the things more important than what you want.

– Ging Freecs

  1. It’s been one hell of a ride.

I watched the original 1999 anime & OVA’s when they came out & followed the remake since 2011. Don’t care if it takes 20 more years to finish, would follow this forever.

  2. ‘The wonder of the world’ at the end is a flock of Small-Billed Swans that Spinner Clow bought a mining area to save.

The magazine cover in the screenshot is a reference to Madhouse’s upcoming ‘Parasyte’. Menthuthuyoupi’s design was inspired by the villain of Parasyte, btw.

Thank you Enzo for blogging this wonderful adaptation. I hope HxH will be Random Curiosity’s Anime of the Year 2014, despite the fact that you are the only writer who watches the show.

See you again in the 2020s for Dark Continent arc and the 2030s for Gyro arc!

  3. One of my childhood anime is ending. It’s hurt so much to see the anime i watch back in my childhood reach this point. The feeling of nostalgia is still lingering in my heart until now.

  4. I can’t believe it ended…I feel an emptiness inside me…

While the side of me struggling to come to terms with Hunter×Hunter (2011)‘s last episode figures itself out, the other side gives Madhouse the utmost gratitude. They made one of the best reboots, if not the best, to a series where fans were restless at the ongoing hiatuses of its creator (with good intentions of course). Initially held in skepticism when compared to its 1998 counterpart in the beginning, the 2011 adaptation broke new ground after bringing the series’ most mind-blowing arc thus far to the screen. As a viewer, I may still be sad but the joy of having received 148 episodes with consistent animation, storytelling, pacing, and etc. lets me slowly accept it. Thank you for blogging this, Guardian Enzo and Random Curiosity.

  5. To be frank, that was a little mean for Ging to actually give his son some deathly challenge, such as climbing a ridiculously tall tree, just after Gon got out of the hospital; I mean, the dude didn’t even know how seriously close to death Gon was. I was kind of hoping for that mama bird to grab Ging and feed him to her babies, at least allow karma to give Ging the measage of how “he should act more of a proper father.”

  6. I don’t really have anything to say, I’m so sad about this,I’ve watched it for 3 years :'(

And I think that the manga’s on a hatius as well, so (for now) there’s no chance to continue the adventure there :'(

    1. If you want to grasp at positives, at least Jump is communicating about the reason this time. I think there’s at least hope that the hiatuses will be less extensive and extended this time, but it really depends on Togashi’s health. I wish he’d just write the scripts and have Abiru do the art…

      1. If you have some sort of degenerative disc issue (like I do) treatment is generally about pain management. When the pain gets so bad you can’t deal with it anymore, surgery is a last resort. All surgery has risks, but the biggest problem here is that if the surgery doesn’t fix the problem, you’re pretty much screwed.

  7. I can’t believe it’s over…
I almost couldn’t bring myself to press play because I didn’t want it to end. Don’t think I’ll ever forget the masterpiece that is Hunter x Hunter.

I immediately think of our real world’s current state of space exploration. Perhaps our earth is miniscule compared to the vast unknown – maybe those endless dark spaces are actually more crowded, just like in that shot above. Anyone else got similar thought? 🙂

  9. A sapling? That tree is a SAPLING??? Well, you know, there are a lot of things to be incredulous about but that one’s sticking pretty hard.

Sticking harder is that no more HxH (not for a long while). Damn. This is made even more torturous by Ging’s teaser. There’s a whole other world just waiting to be explored, and I’m amazed by how HxH makes me wanna dive right in (except of course, I’d probably die before even taking a single step, but whatever).

  10. Ugghhh don’t get me wrong I loved this adaptation as much as everyone here but I am extremely upset that they played “Departure” with what corresponds with chapter 339. It just ruins the final shot of Meruem and Komugi. They definitely shouldn’t have used such an upbeat track for the end, maybe something slower and less happy-sounding.

    Archiepiscopus
      1. Yeah yeah, I know. Nothing is perfect but the chapter is called “Silence” for a reason. No words, not a single sound was necessary to convey all that emotion and for the anime to play such a “happy” song in what is such a cathartic series of events is just… kind of jarring.

        Archiepiscopus
  11. Hmmm, so after the feeling of emptiness from last week, IMO this week is even worse! Not in a bad but in a sad way. Its always terrible when a story you really liked and looked forward to comes to an end. Especially the morning after…;) But I mean it, sometimes its just really really hard to know that its over.
Im glad that HxH had such a good adaptation! I dont even know if Ive ever seen a better one. I dont wanne say that there arent stories that are as good as HxH, but concerning the adaptation itself…it was so faithful to the manga and it really showed that they went to great efforts to do Togashis story justice. I appreciate that and I have to say that for the first time I found a story where manga and anime are equally good. (Just the music…, but oh well, can ignore that)

And this is why I think theres still something to look forward to. The anime will surely continue, the hints at the new arc are already there, and -without spoiling too much- as far as I can tell, the new arc in the manga is gonna be really interesting!!! So actually, we can be at least happy that it is not entirely over yet:) Though we might have to wait an eternity (come on Togashi!!!)

  12. I really loved this anime the ending and all of it was magical . im gonna read the manga . And even though the ending brought a few manly tears it was so good that i would have been happy even if that was the end of the story The story and the quotes have always been an inspiration . I litterally can not discribe how good this anime was . And i think that it changed the world 🙂 Imagine if everyone watched and understanded it how this world would change 🙂

  13. Watched the episode yesterday. It was emotional. A great ending. Full circle. Gon’s journey of finding his father has come to an end.

I decided to read the manga (avoid online translations and go for Viz) and am completely surprised. It feels like I’m reading a completely different manga!

  14. If this was a normal show, I’d go ‘man, I’ll miss this show’ and move on, occasionally thinking back on it.

Not so much with this one. Hunter X Hunter is special. In a sense, this show never really ‘ends’ as far as I’m concerned. It’s one of those rare pieces of fiction that’ll stay with me for the rest of my life, and I’ll continue rewatching it from time to time as long as I’m able (hell, I’ve already watched it four times in the last nine years if you count the older anime). The writing, the sense of adventure, the imagination that went into it, they’re all peerless. I doubt there’ll ever be another shonen series (or any series, this show’s in my top five of all time) as good as this one, and you know what? I’m kind of fine with that. To have a series like this stand at the apex of it all. I’ll just enjoy it again as much as I want, because I never really get bored of it.

So, in the end, this is just a temporary stop, with the hope there’ll be new bits added some time far into the future. See you around, Hunter X Hunter.

  15. HxH was a beautiful journey, but is yet at the beginning. Just as the intro never did change,i suppose this ending indicates the start of the departure. And never would i have think to follow Ging’s advice, but i shall make his advice mine, and enjoy the little detours i make during this journey of life.

    1. “HxH was a beautiful journey, but is yet at the beginning. Just as the intro never did change,i suppose this ending indicates the start of the departure.”
I’m not sure if you intended it, but I just had to add that the opening is also called ‘Departure’.

    1. Lol, thats kinda funny dude. But seriously “because i love hearing peoples opinions” what would YOU consider an above “mediocre” anime series…in your opinion.

      I wonder if you‘ll respond…

      BROOKLYN otaku
    2. I might have issues with HxH, but to call it mediocre just lacks an understanding of the quality that went into such a ambitious production. and even with the recent arcs I wasn’t a fan of, I still rank this in my top 3 tv anime.

      Impel Down Hippo
  16. I remember when I first heard of Hunter x Hunter, and I was dubious about the series since I had not watched the first adaptation nor heard about how the concept of “Nen”. I saw bits and pieces of the Yorknew arc and fortunately it spurred me towards trying the Hunter x Hunter; and after looking back at the journey this adaptation took, I hope that others come to stumble onto the anime the way I kind of did and try it out for themselves since Hunter x Hunter was not only exciting to watch, but heart-wrenching at times and takes more than words to describe the emotions and scenes that happen in each arc.

Additionally, what Ging said to Gon, actually reminded me a lot about one of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s quotes: “Life is a journey, not a destination”. Although Gon’s main goal was to find Ging and find out why he wanted to be hunter, Gon experienced many moments where he couldn’t have experienced if he stayed on the island, such as friends like Killua, Kurapika and Leorio, or learned how dangerous, yet close some are like the Phantom Troupe and even Genthru. What Gon found from those “detours” to find his father truly became what symbolized the spirit of being a hunter.

I hope that if Togashi recovers from his back problems (or whatever comes his way) and continues this fantastic and vivid story that we can hopefully witness in the future.

  20. HxH is one of those great series that focuses on the “world of HxH” while Gon may be the main character, the story of HxH doesn’t necessarily focus on him either. Truth be told, Gon was largely relegated to a side character during the Chimera Ant Arc and was largely absent from the aftermath.

I think it’s great that the series can survive the “loss” of it’s main characters for certain points in time. Even in the manga Show Spoiler ▼

HxH has always been a series about growth and growing. Not just in power, as most other series go, but also in maturity. Yet it still manages to capture that youthful spirit of adventure that is often loss with age. I look forward to seeing where this series will eventually lead to and can only hope and pray that the author manages to finish it. The frequent hiatuses are a bit worrisome especially to the fans but we should put our own desires second to the authors health and safety.

It’s been a great ride so far and I’m pretty sure it will still be a great ride to come.

  21. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, the Dark Continent stuff is absolutely ridiculous, and I love it. Take the world tree for example (and those giant birds!), simply nonsensical that it could grow into the atmosphere for the type of show this is. Even though the DC stuff has a One Piece quality, I love stuff like that, but I just don’t think it blends with the current world all that well. That would’ve made for one hell of a separate anime, Ging and Gon starting an expedition to the DC.

Togashi seems have been inspired by King Kong or Land of the Lost when he wrote the Dark Continent, and those types of worlds don’t generally mix well with modern technological civilizations, as it seems weird to have a world with the internet but not be fully discovered with mysterious things waiting in the darkness of the unknown. Also if there are giant creatures around, it seems likely there’d be more reported incidents of them.

But what’s great about those fantastical worlds, to me, is the idea of adventure into the unknown, and that’s what’s makes them so great. Ging’s line to “enjoy the little detours”, also just embody’s what it is to travel, and what’s so great about it. to go to a foreign place, and have an experience you weren’t expecting is what makes travel so transcendent. just getting lost and wandering around can be so much more rewarding than just sticking to a prearranged itinerary. it’s an adventure, but don’t get so caught up in the destination, just enjoy the journey. and what’s great about that personal ethos is that can be applied to anything you do in life, including your journey through it.

I’ve had issues with some of the recent arcs of HxH, but I still feel this ranks in my top 3 tv anime, not sure whether it’s 2 or 3, as Cowboy Bebop takes number 1, and Berserk is 2 or 3 as well. Outside of that, the top 10 is in constant flux.

Let’s hope we get something like an OVA in the next fews years, or even better, if they can continue the series, cause I wanna see the DC!

  24. The end of another era.

I was in high school when I first started reading the manga. I entered university when the first anime by Studio Pierrot aired. And now I’ve outlasted two HxH animes and still the story is not truly completed.

By the time Togashi gets his butt moving to actually finish the story, probably my own kids will be entering high school. lol

    But still I shall wait.

  25. A whole other unexplored world!!!??? That just makes this hiatus even harder to swallow. This was As best we can expect for a final episode considering 147 was the “real” ending. Anyhow 22min to recap 3 years (or 15 yrs if you start counting from 1999) was always going to be bittersweet and somewhat heartbreaking.

It was wonderful to see Gon finalize his mission to meet Ging. Sure Gings a douche by our standards, but Gon is certainly Gings son and I find it difficult to believe Gon has any hard feelings. In fact hxh shows us, and Ging drops that lovely quote, how the adventure of finding Ging was part of Gons DNA from the very beginning.

Thanks for the memories HxH and RC

  27. Hi, new anime fan from the future.
Let me guess. You heard of some old anime called “Hunter x Hunter (2011)”, you’ve been told it’s a classic and a masterpiece, but you’re not sure it will entertain you because it’s too old. So you took your smartwatch/implanted computer/flying car/whatever, did a search for info or personal accounts of people who actually watched the thing in real time, and came up with this archived page in the vast cyberspace.
My (our) words for you are: YES. WATCH IT. You won’t be disappointed. Now in 2014, classic shounens like Fist of the North Star and Dragon Ball still are fun and epic for any new watcher. Hunter x Hunter (2011) is the same, although ~30 years younger than the former examples. Believe us, you’ll be blown away.

  30. Thank you Guardian Enzo for writing all these posts, I always relate entirely to what you write about Hunter, and I still can’t believe its over. I put it off for so long and i’ve finally watched it. I feel as if it’s just as the hxh anime team has said. Hunter X Hunter is definitely my treasure for now and forever. It’s a truly amazing story.

    1. Same goes for me. As someone who had put off Hunter due to its length for so long I finally gave it a go about a couple of weeks ago, and I just finished it. It was simply an outstanding combination of great source material (Togashi is without a doubt one of the best) and an amazing adaption on the part of Madhouse. While an OVA in the future might be a possibility, the 148 episodes of sheer brilliance was more than enough. Thanks Enzo for getting me interested in the series or else I would have never given it a try.
